Good Sequel

KOTOR II is a good sequel. The gameplay didn't change that much since the first which I thought was ok. Overall I think it's a good game but not as good as Part 1. The Sith were too easy to beat, not just the last one (I don't remember her name) but all of them and it didn't take me long to figure out anything. I was expecting a plot twist like with Revan but that never happened. None of the characters held up like part 1 either, nothing special about them. I haven't played the "Dark Side" yet but I was dissapointed in the light side ending, way way to short, like they left it open for a sequel with your character. Anyways I still had fun with the game mostly because I love the Star Wars series. Hopefully they'll continue to make more of these games in the future.

A GREAT Game! Better than the fist!

I have to say this game was enjoyable. I loved it better than the first. Why? Because you start off as a Jedi. People are complaining that the game isn't hard enough? Please! It's perfect just the way it is! I want to enjoy the game not get upset because it is TOO hard to play. What enjoyent can you get out of that? The graphics are off the charts! You won't be disappointed I promise! The ending is, maybe not the best BUT think of it this way maybe the reason it ended the way it did it's because it goes directly into "Knights of the old Republic: 3" Please tell me there is part 3 coming out!

Quite good, but with a few flaws

The original Knights of the Old Republic was a superb game, one of the best I'd played in quite some time. So naturally I was very excited when I heard that a sequel was on the way. Now that I've played through it a couple of times (once each for the light side and the dark side), here are my thoughts:

The first thing that struck me about the game was how similar it is to its predecessor. The gameplay has been tweaked here and there with a few new variables thrown into the mix, but for the most part it plays just like the first game. The graphics may have been slightly improved in a couple of areas, but for the most part the look of this game is indistinguishable from that of the first. This is fine, though. I was hoping to see some better visuals this time around, but the graphics suffice, and the gameplay was solid to begin with, so why make any drastic changes?

One area in which this game falls short, however, is in the story. I do like the characters, the dialogue is well written, and there are certainly some interesting events to be discovered, but the overarching story was often vague and uninteresting. I sometimes found myself getting impatient in long exposition scenes because I couldn't bring myself to care overly much about what was happening. That never occurred in the first KOTOR. The ending of the game was especially disappointing in this regard. I kept waiting for the point to come where the plot would reach a level commensurate with the level of tension and anticipation that the developers were obviously trying to create, but it never came. The last couple hours of the game were sadly anticlimactic.

My other complaint is in regards to the game's difficulty, or more appropriately, its lack thereof. Even if you turn the difficulty setting to High, a decent player will find that there's not one point in the game that presents any real challenge. Your main character will have no trouble annihilating everything that crosses his path. The first KOTOR was too easy as well, in my opinion, but the problem is more pronounced in the sequel.

Don't get me wrong; it's still fun, and I certainly recommend it. After the brilliant Knights of the Old Republic was released to such wide acclaim, the expectations placed upon this game were very high, and the fact that it fell short doesn't mean it's not worth your time. It's a good game. It just could have been better than it is.

Excellent game, but not as good as first

When I heard about the sequel to one of my favorite RPGs (Role playing games), I was excited by the fact that I might be able to pick up where I left off in KotOR I. Although I wasn't dissapointed, there are still some flaws in the game to keep it from getting 5 stars.

First the good. KotOR II uses almost exactly the same engine as the original which is perfectly fine because it was a solid engine that was easy to use and one that I was already familiar with from KotOR I. The other thing I liked better was the fact that you start off as a Jedi instead of getting halfway through the game and learning the ways of the Force as in KotOR I. Also the increased amount of force powers and the additional force prestige classes allowed the player to custimize the character better.

Now the bad. The story was lacking, plain and simple. Most of the time I am wondering why I am somewhere and why I am fighting this person. I had to play the game through three times to completly understand the end. To play through 3 times took me about a month compared to KotOR I which took much longer.

In conclusion, the game was a good extension to KotOR I, but failed to have that huge climax in the middle or end. The game just kind of ended. So, if you really liked KotOR I i suggest getting KotOR II but get the original first.

Dark and Moody, But Gets Old Too Quickly

I liked this game for the intitial 2 weeks. Then the game sort of grows stale. The characters have no real resolution with their problems, not that the first Kotor had any of that, but I cared more about the characters in the first Kotor than in the first one. I would have liked to have had more background on the old dark jedi Kriea. She was a sith lord and that was about the only thing interesting about her. Though I liked her character more than any other encountered. Overall I would say that this is a decent game though certainly not the best that can be achieved with what's already been done with Rpg's. Somehow I think bioware would've done a better job.

Complex and Compulsive

I recently finished the predecessor to this game, the wildly popular Knights of the Old Republic and was eagerly anticipating embarking on "Sith Lords". I have not been disappointed! While I had few complaints about the original, subtle upgrades and refinements to the menus and overall gameplay in KOTOR II surprised and delighted me.
I had hoped that this game would be at least as interesting as the former and so far it has been. As an avid fan of D&D and various other manual RPG's for many years, I find the streamlined "behind the scenes" dice rolling a nifty switch. I enjoy the array of gear and universe items and I am entertained by the graphic account of what happens during combat. Both of the KOTOR's are veritile in their compromise between realtime and turn-based play allowing players to be as "from the hip" or point-by-point calculating as they would like during combat. With all this going on, it still manages to be "Star Wars-ey" for us goofy fans who like that creative Lucas touch in our simulations ,shooters, RTS's, and now even RPG's. I hope to see many future installments of the KOTOR series. In the meantime, I hope this review helps you to decide either way.

KOTOR falls to the bland side

KOTOR 2 pales in comparison to its predecessor, which is one of the best RPGs I've ever experienced. The original KOTOR delivered an engaging storyline with interesting characters and relationships, as well as some challenging battle scenes complemented by clever brain-teasers.

KOTOR 2, on the other hand, has a rather convoluted storyline, something I could overlook were it not for the games other shortcomings. Among them, it's easy. Too easy. The enemies don't pose much of a challenge: Playing the entire game, my party died in battle a handful of time.

Even more disappointing: This game lacks the mental challenges that made KOTOR so entertaining. The original had brain-teasers scattered throughout the game. This game has merely a few, none of which take more than the slightest amount of contemplation.

Moreover, too much of KOTOR 2 relies on simple "fetch" missions: Getting this or that; delivering messages ... Yawn.

So why the score of 3? Well, the game does retain some of the features of KOTOR that I enjoyed. The space fantasy world is well designed and fun to explore as you interact its array of various denizens. I still love that you get to play a Jedi and choose to follow the path of Light or Dark. I enjoy seeing how your choices affect both your character as well as your allies and the world around you. And using your increasingly powerful Force powers and lightsaber skillz to shred your enemies is quite satisfying.

For all its shortcomings, I've played through the game once, as a Dark Jedi, and I am currently in the process of playing it again following the path of Light. Plus I'll likely revisit it down the road and play as a character of the opposite gender, because that, too, has some effect on how the game progresses.

All in all, if you're a fan of KOTOR, this game is worth checking out. Just don't get your hopes up too high.

If you are into Star Wars and Role Playing, this is the game for you. Detailed characters, inticing missions and high level of replay makes it a definitive game to own, and you don't need to have played the first one to enjoy it! Have fun!

Lost and Alone

KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II takes place about five years after KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC ended. Lord Revan has disappeared. The Jedi were wiped out in the war that followed and the Sith seem firmly in control of much of the galaxy. The game begins with your character, known as The Exile, sitting half-naked in a prison cell aboard an apparent mining station. There are dead people all around and most of the robots have seemed to go insane. The Exile has no lightsaber, but does have Force powers. As the game progresses, you learn more about The Exile from rather frequent cut-scenes. The ultimate choice lies between choosing to return to the Jedi or to fully embrace the path of the Sith. The path isn't exactly as clear as it was in the original KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC. People give advice, but commit actions that are in opposition to what they advised. Some characters appear to be allies, when in reality they are enemies hoping for your characters downfall.

There are also some of the same characters from the first game. Some of these pop up as additions to your party, while others are part of the storyline and appear mainly in cut-scenes. The Ebon Hawk is also back and is the ship that your character uses to get around the galaxy in.

The workbench can be used not just to upgrade items, but to make new armor and weapons as well. An additional lab station has been added, too, that allows for the creation of medical devices and explosives. These stations can be located on just about every location.

Pazaak has gotten more interesting with the addition of a few new cards and a first play rotation. The racing games have also been improved, but I didn't spend too much time on those. I was more interested in the storyline of the game.

The fighting seemed to be much easier than in the original KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC, especially towards the end of the story. This could be because the game seems to autosave more often, allowing progression to happen faster. Overall, enemies seem to die easily and without doing much damage. The one exception I found was in the Jungle Tomb on Dxun. I don't know why, but I found the Sith Masters there to be particular difficult to defeat.
A component to the storyline that I really enjoyed, was having your character be able to teach and train other characters in either the ways of the Force. It was pretty neat to be able to have a small army of Jedi going into some of the final confrontations.

However, despite some of the improvements, KOTOR II is disappointing. After having played through KOTOR, I had a huge sense of accomplishment. It felt as though I had gone on a long journey and saved (or later when I played as a Sith, overtaken) the galaxy. There was even a cool scene celebrating the victory. KOTOR II doesn't have any of that. The ending of the game is terrible and leaves more questions unanswered than I had when I first started playing the game. But, it's not just in the ending. There are several times throughout the game that elements seem to end rather abruptly. That's not to say that playing the game isn't fun, because it is. There are times when the game is exciting, but overall KOTOR II just isn't as engaging as the original. Looking back at the gaming experience, it is as though the developers just rushed through the game to get it completed on time.

If you haven't played the original KOTOR, I recommend playing that first before playing KOTOR II. KOTOR II is fun to play, especially if you're a Star Wars fan, but it'll make more sense having played KOTOR first.

The Greatest Star Wars RPG Out There!

The best way to put it is that this sequel more than lives up to its predecessor. This game had me intrigued and interested for about a week (on account of the fact that I couldn't stop playing and finished it in that time). I played one hundred hours and beat it in that time. Getting that done in a week is a true accomplishment for me, because I never seemed to be able to finish RPGs. I always got bored halfway through. This game had me on the edge of my seat the entire one hundred hours. The score for this game kept the eerie moments going with no problem.

Ok, the bottom line is that this game is a must-buy for all Star Wars and RPG fans. If you're not huge on RPGs, it's still a great game to play. Buy this game. You won't regret it.
