Fabulous game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

First of all, I would like to say that I am a long time RPG gamer, and next to Final Fantasy IX, this is one of the best games I have ever played. Not only are the movies, battle scenes, and equiptment fun and entertaining, but the actual storyline is surprisingly good too. I will admit that the storyline can be a little confusing at times, and after a while the battle sequences do get monotonous, but if you have a large chunk of time you are willing to invest in a great game, especially if you are an RPG fan, than this is the game for you. The dragoon aspects of the battle sequences are very fun to watch and partake in, but the dragoon movies are even cooler to watch. This game is probobly my favorite game for playstation. (FFIX rocks too)

OK, but replete with flaws.

While Legend of Dragoon is entertaining and sometimes fun, the flaws make it a hastle to play, in my opinion.

The storyline is excellent, though I would have preferred they expanded on the history of Dragoons a bit more. I can't complain about the dialogue or the storyline at all. The problem is in the battles and the graphics.

Sometimes the graphics are just horrible, which surprised me considering how late in the PSXs lifetime this game was released. I don't know if the designers just got overzealous or what, but the graphics turned out only so-so.

The battles......For example, before EACH and EVERY random encounter, you get around 10 seconds of camera shots, of the monsters and the characters and the scenery. 10 Seconds may not sound like much, but when EVERY SINGLE ENCOUNTER has this waiting period, you'll start to think about what else you could be doing with your time. It doesn't help that the attack animations, especially of the monsters, get very repetitive. One starts to wish the monsters would just hurry the hell up so you can end the battle.

The way to defeat enemies quickly and without losing is to use Additions. Additions are combination attacks that you set in the menu before battle. But, you can only have one addition set at a time, which means that every time you attack it'll be the same combo. Also, in order to execute the addition, you have to push the controller buttons at EXACTLY the right time after the initial attack in order to pull it off....which isnt hard in and of itself, except it gets VERY old very fast.

ALSO, in order to get better additions (which do more damage and raise your power more) you need to use your older ones over and over - about 80 times each or so. Which may not sound like much, until you take into consideration that additions may fail, or you could be interrupted with a counter attack....or that you simply have to go through HUNDREDS OF BATTLES to get all the best additions......each battle taking forEVER to complete thanks to the camera panning at the start of the battle and the long drawn out attack animations.

After getting about two thirds of the way through the game, I just put it down and didn't pick it up until a year had gone by and I had had sufficient time to forget how horrible the battles are. Even so, I almost didn't finish the darn thing, but I wanted to see how the story ended, though I didn't want to read a spoiler.

The story was THAT compelling, and almost makes up for the horrible battles and sub-par graphics.

Lots of Fun!

This game is very fun. The battles do get repetitive after awhile, considering how many you have to engage in to get your additions and levels up. I liked the additions during the battles because it kept me on my toes, not like FFVIII where you click a couple of buttons and wait a half an hour. The background and town animation is wonderful! Character and battle animation is not nearly as detailed but the animators did alot with it! Espically the spell animation! I would have to say the only part that I had a problem with was the dialouge... it seems to have been written by someone with a pretty poor grasp of the english language. I found myself reading something a couple of times cuz it didn't make sense. No real mistakes but the flow was all wrong and the expessions that they were overly found of using were completely out of place at times. But all in all I think it was a great game with a formulaic but involving story. You'll need the book to get all the stardusts though, or you'll find yourself clicking all over everywhere. You get some great items by collecting them, not to mention a whole awesome side quest you get if you collect them all!

Legend of Dragoon is fantastic

Legend of Dragoon is an awsome rpg and is, in my oppinion, a match for Final Fantasy in all aspects. I think that if there could be a sequal to it the only thing they might try to improve on is the graphics and change the storyline a little to give it a better chance at beeting the Final Fantasy series in an all out ratings contest by professional gameing players.

The best graphics I've seen

One thing that really sets Legend of Dragoon apart is is its graphics. You can see why this game was 3 years in development. Shots with any running water are amazing. I've never seen such realism with water which is probably the most difficult thing to make look realistic. The cut scenes are nice and the backgrounds are very nice and dont' get old since there are over 600 in the game spread over its 4 discs.

Also, the audio really adds a lot to the feel of the game. The battle music does a very good job of not getting annoying quickly and changes depending on where you are in the game.

The Dragoon system is a nice, original system. They aren't insanely powerful, but I think that they could be integrated into the game more. They are really only necessary for bosses and it would have been nice to see their being necessary more. The additions system is a great idea. It makes the battles more interesting because you get to do more than just choose attack or magic and it's very nice how they advance as you use them.

The only reason I gave this game 4 stars was because its story is not original at all. You can almost cut and paste characters straight out of Final Fantasy VII and VIII for these characters. The character development is nowhere as smooth or natural as in VII, but much better than VIII. The storyline, while intriguing, is also standard RPG fare. Nothing new.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable game to play. I just finished it and am eager to go through it again with different characters. Judged on its own, this is an excellent game and is much better than Final Fantasy VIII. It may not be original, but it's definitely fun.

It's The Lost Final Fantasy

This game seems like, at first glances, its made by Squaresoft. It's not. Its Sony's first attempt at an RPG, and it was very successful. First, the graphics are like a mixture of FF8 and FF7's graphics, but the FMVs and cinematics are better than ANY GAME ON THE PLAYSTATION (With the exception of Vagrant Story). The story's characters are very likeable, something important to me ususally. Its not an easy game, spanning four discs, and parents, this could be the best educational Tenn-rated game ever. HAND-EYE COORDINATION is the key word here. If you want to get past the first set of Plains, you better have some kind of Hand-eye coordination, or your toast. There are plenty of secrets in this game to keep you playing for a while. Do you get what I am trying to say? BUY THIS GAME AS SOON AS YOU HAVE THE CHANCE.

When I heard this game was the Final Fantasy Killer, I just had to play it, being an avid FF fan. And I have to say, I was impressed. This game was great. A tad on the long side, but it hasn't stopped me from replaying it over and over. The characters are all fun and interesting, even with the whole Sentai thing going on. Sure, you can guess what'll happen by looking at the characters costumes, but it's actually pretty fun. The music is great, and the graphics are great as well (for a game this old).

This game should definitely be remade on a new system, but while I keep my fingers crossed, you should get it.

I bought this game when it first came out in somewhere around 2000. It was at that point my favorite game ever. Now after advances in games up to this point (I now have a ps2, wii, and a 360) It is still on my top 5 games that I have ever played. I am not sure if it is more nostalgia now or if it is still the game. But still a good buy.

Fun, Addictive, but no Final Fantasy...

I have no trouble understanding why this game has been in the making for three years. The CG animated scenes exceed the graphics of Final Fantasy VIII and other high-res games, and the regular graphics aren't exceptional, but they're good. The reason I gave this game three stars is because of two things: the dialogue, (ex: Dart, the main character, greets his old karate master, Haschel, by saying, 'Hey man! How ya doin'?') which doesn't fit the personalities of the characters, and the story; it is repetitive and sometimes gets somewhat predictable. This is a nice buy for hard-core RPG fans, who might like the innovative battle system which really revolutionizes timed hits. But for newbies, I reccommend Final Fantasy VII. It was my first Playstation game, and in my opinion is it's the best RPG ever and not incredibly complicated like Final Fantasy VIII. Overall, this game isn't that bad, and I've played worse games, but I don't reccommend buying it right away. Do it like I did, rent it more than once. You'll get your fill.
