PS2 players be warned

This game is pretty good. It's certainly not the best RPG I've ever played, and it has its fair share of weak spots (awful translation for one). However, overall I would recommend it to fans of the RPG genre. There is just one huge problem - it CONSTANTLY FREEZES. PS1 and PS3 owners, please feel free to disregard my review as I do not nor have I ever owned either of those systems. So I cannot speak to Legend of Dragoon playing experiences on those particular machines. But for all you PS2 owners out there, please listen to me when I tell you that this game will test your patience to no end. Perhaps it works fine on older PS2's, but if you have a slimline like me, then this is not the game for you. There are certain parts of the game where it will freeze 100% of the time guaranteed, and you will have to get through those particular spots by bringing your game and memory card over to a pal who has an older PS2 or a PS1. It will also freeze randomly during random enemy battles every now and then. I've heard that freezing can be avoided by not transforming into dragoons. Well, I can attest to that being true from my personal experience in getting past one constant freeze spot, but really - what are you going to do, avoid turning into a dragoon all game long in the hopes that you won't freeze the game? That kinda sucks, considering it's Legend of DRAGOON!!!! What really kills me about this situation is that Sony is the company that makes the game. It's not like Square or Capcom made a PS1 game that won't work on a PS2. Sony made one of their own games incompatible with their own system. Nice work.

So, again, PS1 & PS3 owners, just ignore my rantings here. But PS2 people, I felt compelled to offer this public service announcement about the frustrations that come with an otherwise enjoyable game.

The definition of a standard rpg

The storyline seemed borrowed, the first game that came to mind was legend of legaia. A big problem for me was the battle system ussualy i can stay up late and play videogames, but with this the attacks were insanely hard to do. I ended up missing more than i was hitting. The best part was the videos were crazy cool and probaly why it was so many cd's. It's a long game and if you like it you will love it and if you hate it you won't be able to get through one cd.

meh

I thought the graphics were great and the story was interesting, but it is very boring after not very long. The combat is like a barebones final fantasy system, only attacks can be extended to create combos by pushing a button at the right time. It takes a ridiculus amount of time to level up and you have to level up because it is a hard game. I would have finished it if leveling up wasn't so slow, but I had to quit in the second disk because I spent most of the game leveling up. If it wasn't for that problem I would have liked the game.

Final Fantasy Killer? I Think Not!

Legend of Dragoon was Sony's weapon against Square's insanely popular Final Fantasy VII, released three years earlier. This game took three years to make, and it may not have been worth the wait.

It has a good storyline, yet a bit unoriginal and repetitive. An amazingly long four discs long, it will last at least 80+ hours of gameplay, yet it may not be short enough to hold your attention all the way through.

On the good side, for those who have never played RPG's, this is a great game. (...)

Over all, this game gets a C+. Good, but not revolutionary.

I loved the game

The first time i heard of it i was drawned to it. I love dragons yet i thought that it would be something like Kingdom Hearts in real-time. I dont usually like the kind of game were you have to wait for your move and it takes forever like in FF10-2. But this one is the best i have played for PSone, i have to say that if u like FF then you will love this game. I have beaten the game twice in about a 40 to 60 hours span b/c i tried going every where and getting the best iteams and weapons before i was going to defeat the last boss. The main thing to remember that dont take ur enemies lightly or else they will come back twice as hard and three times as pissed. So try the game rent it but i say try it at least u will be hooked if u like FF

A pretty Good Game

I really like the concept of this game. Some things i like about RPGs is unieqness(i dont know if thats a word)and length. And boy does this RPG have both. This game is on the Playstation and it has 4 discs but with length comes a problem not letting the game get old. The game is addictive to a certain point but then it seems like the storys reppetitive. There is however a very cool unieqness about this game.Additions.When you attack you must hit the X button at rite time to continue the attack. As you complete the attack you get spirit points which give you the power to become a dragoon a powerful "thing" with good magic and strong attack.Well as u totally complete the attacks they level up with so many completions. As your charecter levels up you get different attacks to level up. This was not my best writing but the addition system is hard to explain. Well i give the game 8.8/10 overall. If you like RPGS and u have the money(and time)get it.

Sony's attempt to make a great RPG was a success.Although it lacks the engrossing story and character's of the Final Fantasy series,it makes up for that with graphics. It's a great start for Sony!

Lots of fun and excitement

SONY really wanted to be like SquareSoft when they created this game. This game certainly isn't the "Final Fantasy killer" like many thought it would be but it definately comes close to that of a final fantasy game. This game features an Amazing storyline and plot that takes about 40 to 60 hours to complete, its certainly good enough to be as popular as FF7 in my eyes. There is 7 playable characters and each of them has a unique and great story that introduces them and keeps the player interested in them. The battle system gets no better for a Playstation one RPG game. In includes combo attacks which they call "Additions" which lets you do consecutive amounts of damage to your enemies by pressing the right buttons at the right time. You also get special Dragoon powers, which of course lets you transform into a "Dragoon." However, you can only use certain magic spells and special attacks while in the dragoon form and you do alot of extra damage. The graphics are really good for its time and it features over 40 mins of voiced cinematic seaquences. It's close to the graphics of Final Fantasy 8. Overall its a really fun game and easy to jump right into. and its replay value is relatively high. Iv'e had this game since 2000 and I still play it today in 2006!

the only downside to this game is the fact that even though its a 4 disc game...it could've been longer and also SONY says they spent 3 years making this game with over 100 members. the game should've and could've been a little better considering they had 100 members and 3 years to make it. also, I think they should have put some more cinematic cutscenes. Even though they have over 40 mins, its not enough to make you hunger for more cutscenes. Other than that, this game is one of the best solid RPG's Iv'e played on the PS1 and even PS2...Now if only SONY would make a sequel...

Excellent game, excellent condition

It's great to be able to relive the classics like this. The only complaint I could possibly make, was that the image was of an original printing version of the game, and the version mailed to me was a "Greatest Hits" second edition (which would drop the value of the game tremendously, but I got it "new" for $14 so who am I to complain?).

Best RPG ever

this is the best RPG ever IMO. the unique and interactive turn based battle system was before its time. many people say there needed to be a sequel to this game for the PS2 and now the PS3. i'd settle for a remake or a prequel.

[[SPOILERS]]

the story itself has interesting twists. at first its "save the girl stop the god of distructions, kill the dark monster that killed your family" but thens its like "wait the god of distruction will come along if you save the girl and btw...your friend you've been traveling with is the dark monster....oh but your pop is sorta not dead"

then you have the dragoon transformations which change the way you play when you attivate them. each character having their own element and attacks. it can compete with any of the final fantasy games. some will say FF7 is better but thats usually because it was their first RPG and it fits in with the whole being emo is cool thing.

but this a great tale of revenge, justice, and homicial retribution
