I was talking to the Owner of Electronics Boutiques the other day about this game. He said severel buyers did not like the game, it was too difficult to master the Additions. Trust me, work at mastering all these Additions, it only requires being fast or slow at the X button. I started out putting a strength enhancer item on my character then began learning the right speed to the sequences. It takes extreme eye/hand coordination. I learned all the additions for all the players and then finished off the game. I love RPG's in the since I will spend weeks just building up my characters to max levels. I do not like using cheat codes so it requires patience on my part. I feel that by taking the time to build a RPG character is a hugh part of playing these types of games. A good combination once you get into the game for the best fighting would be Dart, Edward, Kongo...using Rose for times in between big bosses to extract healing for you. Please take the time, build your charac. master all the additions and the Dragoon strength and experience the full intensity of this game. Hope you enjoy it as much as I. Good Gaming to you.

Man! I got this from my local Babbages. I got sick on a Wendsday, and at that time I only had 1:15 logged on, and thought it was neat. I sat down to play a little to pass my sick hours away, and it did! Before I realized it, I had logged over 10 more hours on! The timed hit system where once you attack, you must press the X button again to make a more powerful hit may remind player of the wonderful Super Mario RPG, but this is much more complicated, as you may be required to do the timed hit several tiems in succession (The highest I have seen is to hit it 6 times correctly in a row! The graphics were well worth the effort.) The storyline is interesting, but so far doesn't stand out in my mind. The CG animation is Eye-dropping, and the in-game grapics are about FF 8's level, just below Vagrant Story's. On ething: if you use a PSX wallet to hold your games, first: keep the manual with you! It's very important. Second, it's 4 discs, so make room! BUY THIS!

Two Thumbs Way, Way Up!

The Legend Of Dragoon is one of the best RPG's that I have played. Sony's first attempt at a RPG on the Playstation is awesome. The storyline keeps you into the game. Why Shana was taken? What is the Black Monster and Moon Child? Who is the mysterious man in black? Who is he working for? And the game goes on and on. The greatest thing I love about Rpg's is keeping me into a game, and LOD has successed. The movies are jaw dropping with actual voice overs. There are three things that slightly ruin the game in my opinion. One, the world map. The road is already choosen, no way off. Two, The Dragons's don't look like Dragon's we are used to looking at. And three. Once you get to disk 4 and decided to go an old town to do a side quest forgotten, the other 3 disks have to be put back in again. The getting up, putting disk 1 in, then 4 and so on bugs me. I just got to disk 4, and can't wait to see the movie and the end. The game is great, not like the polygonal figures on FF7. The combat area reminds me of FF8. I love the voiceovers on the attacks. If only Squall could shout Lionheart. But oh well, I love the FF series and I can't wait for the release of LOD 2 on the Playstation 2. This is definitely a must have!

Very addicting, after a while

I have to admit that I was like many people who compared this game to Final Fantasy. I thought the beginning of the game was kind of boring, but since I paid my money for it I did not stop playing it. After a while I started to get really addicted to it. I learned to love it. No it isn't Final Fantasy, that was established with the name of the game, there aren't very many games that are Final Fantasy. If you like rpg's I think you will like this game, and stick with it if you don't like it at first, it gets much better.

Five Stars From a Veteran Gamer.

I've nearly finished this game and I must say I have really enjoyed playing it. The storyline is engaging, the characters interact well and the graphics and sound are pretty. Once you get the hang of how to make the characters do their special attacks, you can really do some damage. Be prepared to hang in there for 70+ hours, though - this game has four CDs. Each CD is a different Chapter in the story. I can't give Prima's Strategy Guide for this game five stars, though. It helped me once when I was stuck, but it is surprisingly vague in most of its walk-throughs (as a lot of these guides tend to be). I consider Legend of Dragoon a fine addition to my RPG collection.

BORING!!!!!!

I thought that this would be an excellent RPG like FF series, but I was horribly wrong. It had an extremely linear storyline, with uninteresting characters and the controls were awful. The graphics were not bad but very few CG scenes. Seriously, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless if you are a true RPG Gamer. I like RPGs but I had to stop playing this game on the second disc. It was still too boring and the story wasn't going anywhere. I gave it two stars for the graphics and that's it.

5 stars...great game

this game is amazing, i know some people dont like it. I think many people get frustrated with the unique battle system of additions. Th characters and plot to the game are one of kind, the only flaw is that the game is not as fun to play two or three more times after you beat it (like me) as other RPG games like the final fantasy games are. Primas guide book is horrible and i dont sugest buying it, it doesnt tell you where to get any items and is too vague on the walkthrough.I also think that the game starts off boring (the first 30 minuets or so) and gets much more exciting(that explains any bad reviews). overall this game is unbeleivable

Imagination is what it's about...

Where to begin... I have read many reviews about this game. Some reviews that I have seen build this game up with positive comments but don't do it any justice. The majority of the reviews that I have read about "Legend of Dragoon" were so harsh I wonder what makes these people RPG fans at all. I have owned this game since its release back in June 2000. I was even able to complete the game within a month or so. To be totally honest I have thoroughly enjoyed this game.

You play as a mercenary named "Dart" who is approximately 20 years of age. As the story begins war is quickly breaking out across the nation. Dart being somewhat naive hears about the arising conflict but takes it as no more than a rumor...until his village has been literally burnt to the ground. His long time childhood friend Shana is also taken captive and sent to the Hellena Prison. Dart then takes it upon himself to infiltrate this enemy fortress to get her back. Little does he know that by doing so he will have volunteered to bring an end to this war and the evil super-powers behind it.

I enjoy this game firstly for its creativity. Being an expressed fan of dragons and chivalry, I find myself easily immersed in this great game. The graphics are easily as great as those of Final Fantasy VII. The FMV sequences are breath-taking. The storyline in my opinion is very good. I enjoyed trying to figure out the many twists in the plot. That is one of the things that kept me playing...just to find out what kind of secrets the characters were hiding from one another. The battle system is quite enjoyable. Sony uses what they call an "addition" system. This where the classic turn-based RPG is brought into the real-time combat world. When your character moves in to strike the enemy you need to push the attack button a certain time to initiate another attack and so which can eventually turn into a devastating combo attack. Granted this can become tedious after putting many hours under your belt, but where would the experience of the battle be without it? Having one of your characters turn into a dragoon is much like Final Fantasy's limit breaks, but not only does your character gain immense attacking power but some impressive magical abilities. Not too mention some sweet armor.

Just about all the reviews I have read have compared Legend of Dragoon to many of Square's games. Square is renowned for their ability to produce amazing RPG's. Final Fantasy is where it all began! After nine Final Fantasy games something new (with a twist of lemon) can be a breath of fresh air to rekindle the RPG flames. I highly recommend this great game to any heart and soul RPG player.

Squaresoft finally gets some real competition.

I was very leery of buying a non-Squaresoft RPG, but have to say I was in for a great surprise. This game surpasses all other Sony and independent RPG's and belongs right up there in the same estimation with FFVII and FFVIII. Great storyline with memorable characters (all with their own little deep, dark secret plot twists) and a sense of humor when you least expect it. The combat system is a pain at first, but really rocks once you get the timing down (trust me; it's nowhere near as annoying as the "Chain Attacks" in "Vagrant Story"). Excellent rendered backgrounds and decent character design (somewhere in between the "Popeye" look of FFVII and the realistic approach to FFVIII) combined with a great musical score make this game a keeper. My only complaint is that the gameplay is very linear, with very few real choices in where to go next. Some more minigames and side quests thrown in would really increase replay value. All in all, though, the game gives very good value for your buck.

Generic RPG - still fun. How to avoid the PS2 crashes.

If you've played other Japanese RPGs then you have a good idea of what you'll get from this. I picked this as my introduction to the genre as I wanted to play a regular or average JRPG first to establish a good baseline as a comparison to the games I'd play later on.

I had a blast playing it. Over 120 hours (most people will take less time - I'm a grinder) of playing time is a spectacular bargain considering that you'll pay far less than $10 for it. The melodramatic story was a particular joy.

The most annoying part was the addition combat. Maybe I'm totally inept but I was NEVER able to hit a level 3 combo and usually missed the level 2s. Since the most powerful combos go up to level 7 that can be a problem. But you can still win the game without doing well in addition combat - there are artifacts in the game that will allow you to hit the additions all the time.

I could go on but it would all be repeating things from other reviews. The MAIN reason I'm posting this review is to help out the PS2 players who experience lockups or freezes that keep them from completing the game. I had that problem as well and was able to fix it.

First off, I experienced rare random crashes but was always able to restore from the last save and continue the game without that crash repeating. Save often!

There are 3 boss fights that will crash the game if you use Dragoon mode. At the end of those fights, after the experience points roll up, the game will just freeze. It will happen EVERY TIME if you use Dragoon mode in these boss fights. (btw, the game has a LOT of boss fights. They're very entertaining)

The solution to the first 2 fights is NOT to use Dragoon mode. (At that point in the game your characters are at least as powerful without Dragoon mode anyway. You just use different tactics to win.) Those 2 fights are vs. Lenus & Regole at the end of disc 2 and the boss battle at Aglis on disc 4.

The 3rd boss fight is the final one against the big bad. The solution is ... don't worry about it! Go ahead and use Dragoon mode. It doesn't matter if the game locks up because the game's over after you win anyway! You still get to see the closing credits and what happens to each character and so on. It might be possible to win the last battle without Dragoon mode but that fight is SUCH a struggle (it took me over 45 minutes to win on the first attempt) that I wasn't interested in trying it again without using Dragoon mode.

Summing up. Good game and if crashes on your PS2 you can work around it.
