So much potential....so little gameplay

Star Wars Galaxies would have to be the saddest MMO on the market because the Star Wars genre promises so much yet the game's developer Sony delivers so little. If you're a Star Wars fan like me then this game will seriously make you cry. They took what could have been a rich deeply immersive world full of larger than life characters embarking upon epic quests for the Rebellion or the Empire and instead decided to roll out an old sword and sorcery clone fitted with a science fiction skin.
There is no rich immersive world, just a mash of things taken at random from various parts in the Star Wars timeline and other stuff completely at odds with the films. There are no epic quests, just the usual beetle killing to receive a few credits, some xp and if you're lucky a piece of leather or a hat. And you'll be doing those for weeks maybe months until you get to what Sony calls content - a dungeon with really big beetles that do enough damage to kill ten players in one hit so you can receive a few credits, some xp and if you're lucky a rifle that is too weak for you to use now. Of course, that's assuming the quest you get isn't bugged and trust me, you haven't seen a bugged game until you've played Star Wars Galaxies.

If you are likely to be frustrated by bugs that create quests that don't deliver their rewards, contacts that spawn on top of a hill where your avatar cannot go, enemies that just suddenly jump in level while you're attacking them, ships that suddenly develop impervious shields without warning, map waypoints to objectives that disappear, buttons in your toolbar that decide to stop working, animals that just suddenly disappear or warp around the place while you're trying to fight them (No, they're not Force wielding beetles) or missions that you spend five hours on and suddenly end abruptly because an NPC contact is "broken" then maybe Star Wars Galaxies isn't for you.

To be fair to Sony, in 6 months time SWG may be bug-free enough to enjoy but for the time being it is a bugged, unbalanced fantasy clone that shows no respect to the Star Wars genre, lacks content and is quite boring to play as a result. Indeed, Sony will have to lift their game immensely if this game is even to exist 6 months from now with games like Age of Hyboria coming out, games from serious professional developers with their eye on playability and enjoyment and not just a quick buck from a known franchise.

You can read all the other terrible reviews on the page for the vanilla version of Star Wars Galaxies to get a good idea what is going on in the community. I wrote one myself. All I have to say here is that if your going to buy this package for this amount of money, then have to sacrifice fifteen dollars a month to play, you might as well know that your not getting what's advertised. The box implies that you can be pretty much anything in the Star Wars universe profession wise, and this is definately no longer true as of April 28, 2005.

Unless your into paying for a buggy game with now generic combat and huge expanses of no population in-game, I wouldn't waste my money on this sham. SOE is perhaps the worst gaming company ever put into being, and their exploitation of a vulnerable Star Wars community is sickening, especially when they don't even deliver a percentage of what they advertise.

what a joke! the cu killed this game. trust me, save your money. people who love mmos left a long time ago....the cu finally did in all those who love star wars and kept up hope that one day SOE would get their act together. but unfortunately they just ensured the death of swg. well hopefully some time in the future a competent company can do a good star wars mmo.

CU killed SWG. subscription numbers don't lie. the only people still playing are people who are riding out the remainder of their subscription periods, it's really that bad. i managed to overlook SOE's total bungling for a long long time, but the cu even did me (a hardcore star wars fan) in. very sad to see such a strong franchise like star wars that was once a promising mmo (swg) get absolutely devastated like this one was by those idiots at SOE.

the swg we loved (even with it's quirks and total lack of help/support from the morons at SOE) has been totally demolished. f you soe.

I am another long time player of SWG. Yes, it's true SOE was deleting threads on the forums, I was banned from the forums for quite a while for what, I still have no idea. I was very against the CU that is discussed below. That said, I stuck with the game, as have many others. Lots have threatened to leave the game, but most of those that threatened have stayed and found a the "new" SWG to be just as fun as ever. My guild is closer than it has ever been. People are a lot more friendly about grouping up for the tougher missions. There is still some soloing that can be fun, but for the most part forming groups is the way to go. Updates since the CU hit have made the game more fun and involving. ROTW, the wookie expansion adds Kashyyk, which is the most involved adventure planet to date.

I wanted to put a positive spin on this, since like ine the SOE forums the only people that care enough to write reviews are the ones that like to complain. The people that are happy with the game are too busy playing to spend the time it takes to write a review or add their 2 cents to the SOE message boards.

As a life long Star Wars fan who saw the originals in the theater I highly recomend this immersive experience in the Star Wars universe.

I have played this game from day one. I am just a gamer and sometimes roleplayer who enjoys hunting creatures with friends along with socializing at the end of the day. A month ago I would have said this was the best MMORPG ever published, certainly the most unique. Sure it had a few bugs and a few things were unbalanced, but for the most part it was a totally enjoyable experience and I'm happy I had the chance to play it.

Happy I had the chance to play it before the Combat Upgrade (CU) that is. For those of you thinking about buying this game you'll never know what a great game you missed. Instead, you'll just get Everquest II with a Star Wars skin. I'm not saying that makes the game a bad one, just be prepared for what you're buying. You missed your chance for the great game that was SWG and now you'll just get this watered down fantasy version. The game we all had is gone and now that the bulk of players have left in disgust those of us who remained behind are starting to realise it won't be coming back. Most of us are examining what we have been left with-
- Most of the player crafters have left or changed profession. This has made all the weapons and gear in the game lacklustre or rare and expensive. Crafting is now so hard and incredibly long no one seems to want to fill the void.
- Same goes for Doctors. Most player Doctors have left or changed profession meaning that you'll always be running around wounded unable to find someone to heal you.
- Pets are no longer unique creatures with their own special abilities and stats. Now it's all level based so a level 20 snake is exactly the same as a level 20 bantha, just different appearance skins.
- We cannot attack while riding a mount anymore so safari hunts are a thing of the past.
- We now have the Everquest II toolbar and warm-down timers making combat just a "click and watch the timer" affair. Combat is now slow and predictable as a result. We get into combat, press the first button, wait for the timer, press the second button, wait for the timer, rinse and repeat.
- The places we used to adventure in are now filled with weak creatures that give 1xp per kill (Keep in mind some skill boxes cost 450,000 or even 1 million xp to obtain) or 125th level or even 225th level creatures (Keep in mind players are capped at level 80 so even with a group of eight level 80s you won't be getting through some places now if ever).
- We used to have auto-attack so if your character was shot at by a hidden enemy, it would turn and start returning fire until you could use your special attacks. Now your character will just stand there unmoving taking damage while you search the screen for the enemy, target it, and click your first attack button. This would probably work if enemies didn't spawn in mid air or in places you cannot target due to bugs....
- The game is VERY bugged. To give you an idea, I posted three bug reports before the CU, now I post one every second day. Not that it matters because the response is always the same.."The developers are aware of the problem and are working to fix it. Have a nice day." I'm sure it's just an automated message now.
- Every third or fourth mission you take will be bugged or broken in some capacity, especially on Kashyyyk (the new expansion) which is the bug capital of the universe.

Having read this you're probably asking why am I still playing? Addiction I guess, I miss the game I had so much fun with and part of me is hoping that they will return the things that made SWG. My account is also paid up until August so I guess I'll hang around until then before leaving for good.

LOL!!! I about wet myself when I saw someone recommended buying KY Jelly in addition to this farce of a game. Nothing could come closer to the truth IMHO.

Something to think about...

What does an expansion for a MMORPG usually run stand alone, by itself? $30-50?

SOE has the core game, the last expansion "Jump To Lightspeed" (which was totally lack luster; after you've done "all there is to do in space" most folks head back to the ground game!) and their newest addition "Rage of the Wookiees", all bundled together in one package for a whopping $30!!!

This alone should tell you how totally desperate SOE is for business. When this game first went "live" it cost $50 for the Standard Version, and $85 for the Collectors Edition. My ohh my how things change...

Fact is folks, if they had simply LISTENED to what their playerbase was telling them, and actually DID something about it, instead of doing the absolute bare minimum to keep this game minimally functional; this game would have been the greatest MMORPG of all time! Instead, SOE chose to exploit the STAR WARS name to make a buck. In fact, if this game didn't have the STAR WARS name on it, it would already be dead.

Don't waste your time or your money with this one; it's simply not worth it! It's not STAR WARS as you know it to be. It's not the Force it's a farce.

If you do decide to pick up this joke of a game and give it a shot, well, I'm with the guy who suggested the KY Jelly. Go ahead and grab yourself a tube, you're surely gonna need it! The only thing SOE knows about their playerbase is how to screw `em!

Good luck!

don't buy this game!

i was also a long time swg player'ette. star wars galaxies has become the worst of the worst game and will go down as joke in the history of the most broken mmorg.

don't let episode III fool you into wanting to experience the 'star warsy' feeling - because you wont get it with this game! you are better off, buying a $20 plastic light sabre at k'mart and be all the jedi you can be.

this game had uber potentials, and WAS the best mmorg out there.

but mr smedly the ceo for SOE wrote a pretty lame message to the remaining swg players, hoping he could 'repair' what has been broken for a long time. which of course failed. the truth is, we held online petitions, to save our OLD swg, we've protested in game and crashed some servers due to the servers instability to hold a mass group of players, begging, asking, screaming, yelling to keep our game the way it was - or to enhance it with long overdue updates we've all be waiting for.
to no availability.
threads on the soe/swg main forums are being deleted on a daily basis, because SOE doesn't want to hear our voices and our right as formerly paying customer's to answer our questions. it is easier to delete these instead.

this game has become a pacman feel console pushbutton nothing.
the CU (combat upgrade) - we vet's call it the 'combat downgrade'
has taken the toll on this game.

if you want to waste $15 a month for nothing - go right ahead. be prepared to play a beta game, to crash every few minutes to your desktop, have a buggy pc - due the games strain on your computer!

Don't buy this at any cost

Sony has ruined the game with the "Combat Upgrade". They put it in beta and REFUSED to listen to their clients before bringing this to the game. They have the worst customer service on the planet, and have ruined what was a decent game also.
