I was online downloading game trials and demos, when I stumbled across a free 10 day trial of SWG, which I thought I would try since I played The Matrix online and found that game to be almost completely boring. After using the cool interface to create and customize my character, I was thrust into space with Han Solo, landing on a space station and beginning my adventure as a level 1 character. The game, at this stage, seemed to have a definite purpose. I chose the Jedi profession, and I met NPC's who gave me tasks to complete. I followed the waypoint indicator and fulfilled various tasks in the space station and in outerspace as well. I reached level 6, where I decided I needed to get off the space station and see the universe and hone my skills to become a jedi. That's where the fun ended. Let me start off by saying that I have seen every Star Wars film. I saw the very first SW in the theatre in 1977. I have bought countless Hasbro toys, played just about every SW video game ever made (even the Empire Strikes Back for the Atari 2600!). I have also played my share of table top role playing games, including Star Wars. I wouldn't say I'm an expert or a hardcore fan, but I have a more than basic knowledge of the SW universe. That being said, I downloaded the full game, payed Sony Online $15 for the month subscription and before I knew it I was on Tatooine looking for adventure. It started off easy enough. Han Solo guided me through a few more quests, which included getting parts for a Land Speeder, then he told me to see some character for more work. The first order of business! Kill Sandpeople. Kill Sandpeople? Now why on earth would a Jedi just go out an kill sand people (because the mayor of Tatooine says their a nusance)? That doesn't seem very jedi-like. So I reluctantly follow these pointless quests and get credits and XP. Then the information well seems to dry up. Before you know it, you are lost in a world with absolutely no guidance at all. The game is utterly pointless and filled with glitches. I complete a quest, and return to the person who gave me the quest (as instructed to do so) and they tell me to return when I have completed the quest - which I have already completed. The only way to really gain XP it seems it to go around and kill the numerous creatures and sand people around the area. You can take transports or use your spaceship to fly to different cities in the planet, or go to other planets, but one there you are still lost in a sea of PC's and NPC's. Trying to get someone to actually speak to you and give you some direction is quite fruitless. You can more or less "join" either the rebellion or the empire. I was trying to become a jedi, but managed to fly a quest for the empire and shoot down some X wings. Aside from the scenery, the Star Wars universe as I know it is non-existant. You can't name your characters any of the popular names in the Star Wars saga (like Kenobi, Maul, Skywalker etc.). You cannot become a Sith. You don't get to use a lightsaber until you are something like 30th level. Believe me, there is much pain and suffering for the true Star Wars fan if you'd like to jump right in, become a padawan, find a Master, train on Degobah or swing a lightsaber. Plus the entire Empire vs. Rebellion theme is almost totally missing. In my opinion, I should be able to join the Rebel's as they launch an attack on the Death Star, or become a Bounty Hunter for Jaba the Hut, or pilot an AT-AT on Hoth. There is no organization. People can from their own clans and things get very confusing. You can "duel" with other players, but there is no really organized battles or structure. It is Star Wars in anarchy. One thing that I find funny is that the other players must be incredibly bored too. If you go near any space port, you will find groups of high level players just standing around chatting, their characters are dancing (which looks really stupid to see a dark jedi dancing like MC Hammer), there's just nothing to do. I'll give Lucas Arts and SOE thumbs up for their attempt at a massive multiplayer online game. The scenery is pretty cool and very accurate, of course where is Hoth and Degobah and Yoda and Darth Vader? But the rest of the game is very poorly planned and even worse to play. Here is how I would create a SW multiplayer game. First, keep the player creation system you have, but allow for more races and professions (I'm not entirely sure why Entertainer is a profession). Once a person selects their character, allow us to control the leveling up process like in any other role playing type game. If I want to put all of my points in to Stregnth, I should be able to. The current system, levels you up automatically. Also, make the quests relevant to the type of character being played. If I choose to be a rebel soldier, send me to rebel boot camp. Make me raise in the ranks of the infantry. Send me on missions to take over Imperial strong holds. If I want to pilot a Tie fighter, send me to flight school. Send me on missions over Endor to stop a Rebel invasion. Make the world persistent. If a group of Rebels takes over an Imperial base, they would have to fight to keep. On night you could log on and the Rebels own Hoth and two days later, the Imperial Navy took it over. There needs to be a purpose. I want to fly X-Wings, Pilot AT-AT's, see Darth Vader land a shuttle in the hangar bay of the Death Star. If Battlefield 2 can do it, so can SWG.

They made a trial and a tutorial that seems nice but the real game is 100% broken. Game is just about unplayable. The makers of the game, SOE and LA, say it will be months before it is playable. But they still charge you $15 a month to play an unplayable game.
Check all the game review sites. They all say this is the worste MMORPG in the history of online games.
Ok, I really wanted to like this game, but...

I bought this game having great expectations, as now you (well, your character) can visit various planets in the Star Wars universe. The graphics, while no longer cutting-edge, are excellent, and can really immerse you into a Star Wars environment (Tatooine, Naboo, and more).
But...
This game is really more like work. To really explore, you have to spend a rediculous amount of time "grinding", which is repeating some task (killing frogs, butterflies, collecting resources, etc) so you can incrementally move up to a slightly more powerful character.
Repeat again and again and again.
As much as I wanted to like this game, I found instead that I really wasn't enjoying it. Be advised: TO SUCCESSFULLY PLAY THIS GAME YOU MUST HAVE TONS OF FREE TIME!! You can hunt with other players, but it takes forever to get everyone together for the hunt, then you have to travel to the creatures, kill them (hope you don't die!), then travel to the next lair of critters. Repeat again and again and again.
You really can't play solo in the game anymore. To advance up the skill trees with any kind of real progress you must join others. Many may say that's one of the nice features of this game. I would reply, that's fine, but indicate that on the box because a newbie player who purchases this game and expects to be able to play it (likely solo) a few hours a week (due to family, work, school, etc) is not likely to have an enjoyable gaming experience.
I would recommend one of the Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic games instead.

Initially Star Wars Galaxies had real potential for establishing a unique identity in the MMO world. However, this opportunity has been squandered. The game is being converted to just another First Person Shooter.
as a result of alpha class rest of proffesions marginalized by continual bad decisons and complete loss of faith

I am another long time player of SWG. Yes, it's true SOE was deleting threads on the forums, I was banned from the forums for quite a while for what, I still have no idea. I was very against the CU that is discussed below. That said, I stuck with the game, as have many others. Lots have threatened to leave the game, but most of those that threatened have stayed and found a the "new" SWG to be just as fun as ever. My guild is closer than it has ever been. People are a lot more friendly about grouping up for the tougher missions. There is still some soloing that can be fun, but for the most part forming groups is the way to go. Updates since the CU hit have made the game more fun and involving. ROTW, the wookie expansion adds Kashyyk, which is the most involved adventure planet to date.
I wanted to put a positive spin on this, since like ine the SOE forums the only people that care enough to write reviews are the ones that like to complain. The people that are happy with the game are too busy playing to spend the time it takes to write a review or add their 2 cents to the SOE message boards.
As a life long Star Wars fan who saw the originals in the theater I highly recomend this immersive experience in the Star Wars universe.
SWG was the best and now is the worst.

Guys, I know you must like Star Wars if you are here but please don't buy this game. This game had some of the most unique ideas and best game play I have ever seen even to this day. After 6 months of the game being out SOE decided to start making it worse. Now with the NGE it is a completely different game from what it started as and is not even a tenth of what it was. DON'T BUY THIS GAME!!!! RUN AWAY!!!!
An awful game

SOE and Lucas Arts turned what was a great game into something not worth buying. There are many better games out there to spend your money on.
SWG never made the numbers expected, and in an attempt to increase the subscriber base they completely changed the game. The end result has been a collapse of the community as all the rewards that veterans worked for have been devalued.
When it was first released great game, now is not good at all.

I have played this game since it was released. I truly hope this review helps. The world looks great the art work and the original concepts were amazing. Numerous professions were deleted from the game. Nerf on characters and creatures happened constantly. Pretty much every aspect that made this game Star Wars at one time, has completely been taken away. There is creatures but you cannot have pets since creature handlers were deleted. Faction pet system was changed completely. Crafting system that once was amazing, it is now useless since the professions were deleted. Bugs, bugs and more bugs, that have never been fixed. Instances and bunkers full of bugs and unbalanced npc's. Jedi system was completely changed as well, so that now it is pointless to be a jedi. Now you can only choose from 7 professions. The game no longer offers the freedom to be creative as it onces did. You cannot solo as it was once possible. Now the game forces you to group, or join a guild. Servers are completely empty even at peak hours, so good luck trying to get a group going. This game is pretty much finished. I must mention that the new animations are completely anoying to watch since they look unrealistic. The new expansions are mostly for veteran players. Customer service is by far the worse I have experienced. Do not be fooled by what the package of this game advertises is a complete lie since this game is no longer Star Wars. Stay away. SOE pretty much finished this game, and truly if you are looking for something better in the market. Then you have to look somewhere else, since only frustration and pointless hours of leveling can come from this game. Pick a profession then have it deleted, that is pretty much what you can expect from this game. I hope this helps, if you truly value your time and money do not support games like this.
