i was also a long time swg player'ette. star wars galaxies has become the worst of the worst game and will go down as joke in the history of the most broken mmorg.
don't let episode III fool you into wanting to experience the 'star warsy' feeling - because you wont get it with this game! you are better off, buying a $20 plastic light sabre at k'mart and be all the jedi you can be.
this game had uber potentials, and WAS the best mmorg out there.
but mr smedly the ceo for SOE wrote a pretty lame message to the remaining swg players, hoping he could 'repair' what has been broken for a long time. which of course failed. the truth is, we held online petitions, to save our OLD swg, we've protested in game and crashed some servers due to the servers instability to hold a mass group of players, begging, asking, screaming, yelling to keep our game the way it was - or to enhance it with long overdue updates we've all be waiting for.
to no availability.
threads on the soe/swg main forums are being deleted on a daily basis, because SOE doesn't want to hear our voices and our right as formerly paying customer's to answer our questions. it is easier to delete these instead.
this game has become a pacman feel console pushbutton nothing.
the CU (combat upgrade) - we vet's call it the 'combat downgrade'
has taken the toll on this game.
if you want to waste $15 a month for nothing - go right ahead. be prepared to play a beta game, to crash every few minutes to your desktop, have a buggy pc - due the games strain on your computer!
A SERIOUS WARNING about SWG and SOE from a WEEK ONE VETERAN!

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided
*Sigh* Where to begin...
This game could be better named:
"Star Wars Galaxies: A Development Team Vs. A Player base".
Never in all my life, have I seen a company alienate so many people in pursuit of the almighty dollar. It's truly sickening. I WAS a 20-month veteran of the game, I had been playing since week one (I've canceled my account and will NEVER do business with SOE again!).
PLEASE, READ ON...
In the beginning...
This game was alright; it was fun, it was unique, and it was totally bug-ridden and unbalanced. Over the course of the last 20 months, the SOE Dev team have made us promise after promise to do certain things to fix and enhance this game. They in fact did very little, if anything at all. They milked us. They exploited the "Star Wars" name to make a buck. They made promise after promise after promise... and never delivered squat. Don't believe me? Just ask any "Smuggler" in the game for their opinion.
They strung us along and led us to believe that the "fixes" to the game were right around the corner! Instead, they were hard at work on an "Expansion Pack" to sell us! And then once again "promised us" that the fixes we've all been waiting for were the next big thing waiting for us, "just hang on, this game is going to be great!" They promised us that they were going to do this "Combat Upgrade" and do it right, and it "wouldn't be released until it's ready!"
We all had a lot of hope, we thought that they had finally figure out that they had totally screwed up and were trying to make amends with a player base on the brink of total collapse. God, how wrong we all were...
Well, much to everyone's surprise, they made the announcement that the long awaited "CU" would be coming out along with the "Rage of the Wookiees" expansion pack! Uhhhmmm... did I miss something somewhere? The alpha test for the "CU" was supposed to begin in January, it never happened. Beta testing began in April, 4 whole weeks before it was supposed to go to live! We all rolled up our sleeves and dove in. I think after the first week or so, the sad realization of what was happening to our game begun to sink in...
They went and copy/pasted EQ2 code into the SWG game so they could "streamline" their operation by having ONE DEV TEAM WORK ON BOTH SWG AND EQ2!!!
The CU was supposed to go live on May 5th. SOE decided to push it to live a whole 2 weeks sooner than that. Honestly, with all the bugs that were still in beta, and now in live, beta could have gone on another 4-6 months! I guess they figured they could milk us all a little more and dump this beta on the live servers and let us pay to test it. Why am I not surprised?
The CU itself is unplayable. It has become Everquest in space, or "EverStar Galaxies QuestWars" as we call it. There are just too many things to list. There are a lot of other more technical reviews which go into much more detail over on the page for the stand-alone game.
As you all can imagine, the player community was totally enraged! We went to the SWG Forum boards to voice our concerns. The only response we ever got back from SOE was THOUSANDS of deleted threads and players banned from the forums. Facing futility, a large portion of the player base has left the game, permanently this time.
This is just not how you do business. I personally will NEVER deal with Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) EVER again. I DO NOT pay MY HARD EARNED MONEY to be lied to, deceived, ignored, strung along, censored, and banned for voicing my concerns. I do not pay money to folks who treat me, a PAYING CUSTOMER, in this fashion.
Star Wars Galaxies is dead. Servers are emptying. People are moving on to other games where folks know how to appreciate their patrons. If you are a fan of Star Wars, and this is the only reason I ever started playing this game to begin with, you will be sadly disappointed!
SWG is nothing more than an exploit of a title, a milk machine. I for one, am tired of being milked.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Buyer Beware!

My son pestered me for this game purchase. It arrived very quickly and my son opened it before reading the very fine print requiring additional purchase to play this game online. Needless to say, he has learned a valuable lesson because it is unreturnable and has absolutely no trade-in value at the local game store. Unable to review the game itself because I won't allow him to spend that outrageous monthly/yearly fee. The purchase information is not listed on Amazon's site and only available if you take the link to GameStop's site. It's like $180/year to play - what a rip-off! Don't be fooled as we were - do your homework first!

Run away from SOE products. Run fast and far. They have begun to take SWG down a path that is guaranteed to alienate their playerbase.
I see a few people here making the ridiculous claim that everyone who is upset about the Combat Upgrade are exploiters or leet dewds. This is untrue. The majority of people upset are non-combatants of all kinds. Crafters, entertainers, doctors... In SWG if you're not a dual mastery combatant the devs are essentially saying that you don't matter.
There have been plenty of reviews here that tell the truth about how deeply messed up the game has become because of SOE horrendous design policies. Do not be swayed by the occasional glowing review. The majority of SWG veterans detest the CU because the game used to be much better. It used to encourage different styles of gameplay and now it does not.
If you enjoy mindless, endless grinding to no real end, then this game might be for you. If not, run fast and far. Put your money into anything but this game.

Presently I have two accounts with SOE to play Star Wars Galaxies. My first account has all the expansions and I've been enjoying the "Total Experience" with that toon for awhile. I tried traveling the Star Wars universe with my other toon(character)which was a Total Pain so I began to think that maybe I should upgrade that toon as well. I'm trying to make an intelligent decision here so I want to use all the information at hand to help me out. Let's start at the beginning.
I started playing about a year ago and became addicted to the Star Wars Universe. I started playing with a friend that had relatives that played the game and were established players. From day one most established players complained about SOE/developers and the way that they screwed up the game. I was surprised by this and blamed it on sour pusses that would complain about anything. Afterall, if the disliked the game so much, why were they still playing? Nearly a year later, I can answer that question. The game IS addictive and I feel that I have time and money invested in a character that I don't want to go poof! I enjoy the vistas in the game and getting caught in rainstorms/sandstorms. It's very realistic. Perhaps the older players have grown tired of the beauty of the game. This game is worth saving though. SOE can't save it though. The only person that can save the game is the original creator of the Star Wars Universe.
Some examples of why SOE can't create an environment that will succeed. They have shown that they are destroyers of professions. My first character was a TKM/Master Commando after many months of building/grinding. He was destroyed after the great(sarcasm) Combat Upgrade. My other character is a Master Armorsmith/Master Smuggler and I haven't spent much time with her due to my time spent trying to fix my combat character. Rumor has it that crafters have been nerfed(destroyed)too. That remains to be seen but my guess is that the players are right about this as well. I KNOW the developers destroyed my original profession. In response to this destruction, I had to create a new character and I wisely choose the Bounty Hunter profession. Guess what?! They destroyed that profession with Publish 20! For whatever reason, the developers want to protect the people that want to quickly become Jedi characters at the expense of another profession. So they destroyed the Bounty Hunter profession.
I suppose that if you want to be a Jedi character with no one to challenge you, this game is for you. The whole idea behind the great(sarcasm) Combat Upgrade was supposedly to create balance. Well, the scales have dipped severly towards one character/profession and anything that a new player does in game has a great chance of having his character destroyed/nerfed in the future. We are all at the whim of the Developers and this has proven to be a fruitless situation.
I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and cancel one of my accounts. I can't justify buying the Total Experience for my second character because the Developers may listen to the bean counters and assume that I approve of what they've done to the game. I DON'T!
My HOPE is that SOE will lose their control of this great franchise and that George Lucas himself will regain control of it. Of course, there's talk that the Producers, not the Developers, are responsible for what's happening in game. We'll see.
Until something changes with the game, I can't suggest to anyone to buy Star Wars Galaxies: The Total Experience.
Avoid unless you are a games tester

This game is getting worse by the week. I have been playing the game now for 10 months and as such have had the chance to play both before and after the Combat Upgrade. Before was much much better. Okay, it needed work but on the whole it was a system that was interesting and challenging and let you play the game your way. After all you will be paying a monthly fee so it should really be your decision what you do. When the CU hit I was mortified to begin with but slowly came to grips with it and did start enjoying once again. Forced grouping is a big thing now although if you know what you're doing you can solo quite effectively too. This week saw the 2nd big publish (number 19) since the update went live. This is riddled with bugs that were reported on the TestCentre 3 weeks ago but have still gone live. This damages game play during a time that you are paying to play. Creature Handler has been decimated. All pets are now useless and although a fix is on it's way, past experience says that the fix could be anywhere up to a month or more until it is fixed. My character is now 50% as effective in this time yet I am still being charged full price. That sums up this game. You are buying an unfinished game that people are leaving in droves that is riddled with bugs with no end in sight. I would definately think seriously about buying this game. I for one have had enough.

You can read all the other terrible reviews on the page for the vanilla version of Star Wars Galaxies to get a good idea what is going on in the community. I wrote one myself. All I have to say here is that if your going to buy this package for this amount of money, then have to sacrifice fifteen dollars a month to play, you might as well know that your not getting what's advertised. The box implies that you can be pretty much anything in the Star Wars universe profession wise, and this is definately no longer true as of April 28, 2005.
Unless your into paying for a buggy game with now generic combat and huge expanses of no population in-game, I wouldn't waste my money on this sham. SOE is perhaps the worst gaming company ever put into being, and their exploitation of a vulnerable Star Wars community is sickening, especially when they don't even deliver a percentage of what they advertise.
This isn't Star Wars we grew up with, Try COH or WOW

I played this game from launch and have participated in all the betas for the various expansions. I was looking forward to the Combat Upgrade and Rage of Wookiees, unfortunately SOE did the same thing to this game they did to Everquest, Everquest2 and Planetside.
They promised us for more than a year and a half that this game would have a Star Wars feel to it and it would follow movie timelines. I am not to sure I may have missed a novel or movie here or there, I was under the impression that between Episodes 4 and 5 that there aren't many Jedi around. The game has way to many on each server. We voiced this concern and SOE said "we don't care". We asked for smuggler to get fixed, SOE promised and then said "nope it will stay broke, we don't care".
SOE and the Devs don't care about customer service and never will, all the new players they get now, I hope when they turn their backs on you all, you will remember these words. "YOU SHOULD PLAY CITY OF HEROES OR WORLD OF WARCRAFT" they are much more superior than anything SOE will put out.
My only hope is that Lucasarts will get smart and pull SOEs contract for Galaxies. I know in my heart Lucasarts can make a far better and more Star Wars feeling game than SOE did or promised us for the last 2 years.
If your looking for a good MMORPG go to City of Heroes, Guild Wars or World of Warcraft, I promise you will have a better time and the Customer Service of those games is outstanding, they actually care about their current and future players and don't fool you into pay to test fiascos like the CU and Rage of Wookiees.
BTW Beta for City of Villains is starting soon, one would think SOE would have tried a real beta for the CU instead of the one week thing they did and then charged everyone to test it out further. Great Job SOE keep up the good work, COH and WOW are loving the floods of new players your giving them and welcoming each and everyone one of them with open arms.
SWG.... SOE done it again! *sigh*

Sheeze. When SOE gonna learn not to bother some things..especially when it wasn't even broken. I only got this game for 2 months. Long enough to see the before/after change. I like the first change and they should it left it alone! Geeze. Now you have to choose only one profession. You cannot do combo profession. Like for example: Entertainer/pistel/polearm. Only one. Creature Handler was pretty awesome profession and SOE threw that away!
NOW...bunch of noobs running around saying "I'm a Jedi!! Oh, where's my lightsaber?" I can understand why the REAL Jedi's are really mad about this. They worked too hard to get where they are and I salute them. Sorry Noobs..no saber for joo!
SOE already done enough damage on EQ (everquest) and now on SWG..I am gonna run out of games to play! One thing I do like is the space fight and it is awesome. That is only good thing I got there for SWG. *sigh*

At the time of its release, and up until the rash of Galaxy altering changes, this was the best game ever made. I became so obsessed with playing an empire divided, that i bought multiple copies, and paid for up to 4 seperate accounts at a time. The game was that fun. The characters were interdependednt on each other in every aspect of the game...So dependent on each other in fact that you had to join a guild, have a few really good friends, or multiple accounts. But with all that dependency, if you were a seasoned player, you still could wander the most dangerous places solo. Unique.
As it stands now you dont need anyone else in game, accept in combat. Just the opposite of what attracted me and many other quazi-anti-social Gaming addicts. You now have the situation where strangers meet to grind out exp in small groups. these groups are temporary, and rarely do the members even chat. Guilds, which used to be a collective of people working together for the betterment of the community, have now sadly become PVP mobs and loot ninja clubs.
The combat upgrade ruined this game. The most unique and enjoyable game ever made, was turned into a very buggy version of every other MMO. If this were a review of the original I would say sell every other game you ever bought to buy it! You can just look at the legth of the reviews in this post, and the passionate please in them to see the great tragedy here.
If SOE decides to fire everyone who supported the CU, and says they did not get enough feedback from thier very vocal, very loyal fanbase, it would be a worthwhile purchase. as it stands now, I strongly urge you to spend your money elsewhere.
