The servers are dying. SOE has launched a game revamp that the players did not ask for, it was not based on players ideas, input, or feedback, and generally appears to have been crafted in SOE's ivory tower to accomplish three things; to dumb it down for a console platform, to make it interchangeable with Everquest, and to drive off most of their remaining playerbase. I cannot recommend that anyone pay SOE to continue beta testing their 3 year live journey to alienate every paying customer they have had, and have remaining.

Awesome graphics, terrible gameplay

As a life long Star Wars fan and a long time gamer I was excited about the possibility of "living" in the SW universe through a MMO. Unfortunately the bugs, poor game design and mismanagement by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) make SWG incredibly frustrating.

If you want to gaze into some amazing graphics, visit the Lars homestead, see the palace of Theed, the abandoned Rebel base on Dantooine, then I say buy this game (and pay $15 per month for the experience). However if you're looking for good game play then stay as far away from SWG as you can.

"This is NOT the game you are looking for... move along..."

LOL!!! I about wet myself when I saw someone recommended buying KY Jelly in addition to this farce of a game. Nothing could come closer to the truth IMHO.

Something to think about...

What does an expansion for a MMORPG usually run stand alone, by itself? $30-50?

SOE has the core game, the last expansion "Jump To Lightspeed" (which was totally lack luster; after you've done "all there is to do in space" most folks head back to the ground game!) and their newest addition "Rage of the Wookiees", all bundled together in one package for a whopping $30!!!

This alone should tell you how totally desperate SOE is for business. When this game first went "live" it cost $50 for the Standard Version, and $85 for the Collectors Edition. My ohh my how things change...

Fact is folks, if they had simply LISTENED to what their playerbase was telling them, and actually DID something about it, instead of doing the absolute bare minimum to keep this game minimally functional; this game would have been the greatest MMORPG of all time! Instead, SOE chose to exploit the STAR WARS name to make a buck. In fact, if this game didn't have the STAR WARS name on it, it would already be dead.

Don't waste your time or your money with this one; it's simply not worth it! It's not STAR WARS as you know it to be. It's not the Force it's a farce.

If you do decide to pick up this joke of a game and give it a shot, well, I'm with the guy who suggested the KY Jelly. Go ahead and grab yourself a tube, you're surely gonna need it! The only thing SOE knows about their playerbase is how to screw `em!

Good luck!

It's Star Wars and Everquest 2 all in one.

I have been playing this game since Feb 2004, and basically the game has always been nothing more than a Everquest copy with a Star Wars skin, since the "Combat Upgrade" they pretty much did as one reviewer pointed out, coded EQ2 into the game to make it easier and more cost effective for SOE, so if you are coming from a fantasy game, Star Wars Galaxies won't seem all the different, if you pick Star Wars Galaxies because you hate fantasy games, well you might want to wait till something truly comes out that is more Sci-fi.

Another problem if you come to this game wanting PVP action, you might want to look into something else as well, Jedi rule PVP in Star Wars Galaxies, now you might say "Oh Cool, I want to be a Jedi!!!" you don't just select the profession, it takes lots and lots of grinding and patience, it is the Alpha class for powergamers, it isn't as bad on less populated servers, but on populated ones expect to find tons of Jedi running around, SOE broke the number 1 rule of multiplayer online games, never put in a alpha class profession, it un-balances the game, but SOE thought the lure of Jedi would bring in more $$$, it ruined the online ecomomy for the game, and un-balanced the PVP(originally Jedi were to be very rare), the CU hasn't changed that, besides it ruins your love of the movies when you hear a Jedi a type of hero from the movies run up and kill you and say "I PWNZ JOO NOOB111111111" and named something like "UBERLEETGOD" or some other ridiculous name.

Also note you only get 1 character per server, per account, unlike newer games that allow you 2 or more characters per server, it limits you to 2 master professions, so trying other professions you will have to go to other servers, or change your professions every so often to explore other things.

The main thing is don't watch Episode 3 or any other Star Wars movie and buy Star Wars Galaxies and think your going to live the movie experience, truthfully you won't, a hardcore Star Wars fan will be very disappointed,Star Wars contunity doesn't exist in this game, don't kid yourself as I said before this is a FANTASY game, you will see some Star Wars characters (they are static in one place and only come out played by a SOE employee very very very rarely),and there are ships, but the game play is straight out of any fantasy RPG, too bad people can't try it for free before buying it, then decide if they will like it or not.

A sad disappointment

Like other reviewers, I actually went out and bought a whole new PC just in anticipation for this game. The features list read like my greatest Star Wars dream. When I first logged in, the scenery and atmosphere blew me away. It just took a couple of days of playing, however, to realize that this game was destined to be a flop. I could go on and on about all the problems with SOE's poor planning and development, but in game terms, this thing is simply not fun. Playing is a chore. The whole "Star Wars-ness" of it all is quickly lost in the drudgery of a neverending grind for advancement, and a sea of bugs and glitches that seems to grow faster than it shrinks. I never paid for my second month. Turn this game over to Blizzard Entertainment... they'll do it right!

I WISH I COULD PUT ZERO STAR

This was once the best MMORPG I've ever played, fun, interesting, innovative in its skills system (you could switch professions, just like in real life, so you could never get bored), with a lot of Role-Playing to do if you wanted, a LOT of people playing it and being happy with it, and for whatever reason that is completely beyond me Sony Online decided to kill this game.
They released what they called "New Game Enhancement" in November 2005, and now Star Wars Galaxies has just turned into another shoot 'em up for 10 year-old kids, where everybody can now be a Jedi at first level (no more quests to fulfill), which is also completely stupid because Jedi are now the weakest of their new "class" system. Yes, you are now once and for all stuck in a specific class, and you can choose between the overwhelming number of... 9 classes ! So now you see Jedi everywhere, but Jedi carrying rifles because their lightsabers and Force powers are useless against even low-level NPC !!!! If George Lucas ever plays this game, he's gonna have a heart attack.
This is totally ridiculous, as is everything else in this new childish game that has absolutely nothing to do with the Star Wars Galaxies that we all played and loved.
If I wanted to play a Doom-like game, I would have bought one, if I wanted to play World Of Warcraft I would have bought it, I bought Star Wars Galaxies because it was a MMORPG like no other, and that's why we tolerated its numerous bugs, but now that it's like all others, but not as good as the others, I'm gonna play a better one.
And so is everyone I know by the way, you can now actually walk in Mos Eisley and be alone in the whole town cos noone is playing this game anymore !!!
Do not waste your time and money on this piece of crap.

Veteran Player, Player since shortly after launch

I have played this game since shortly after launch. When I started the fastest way to get around was to run, armor was a nice to have thing, and buffs were crappy in compairason to pre-cu but also nice to have. Jedi were non-existant and if they did, you never saw them. RIS armor was a myth that noone was sure existed, as was BH armor. This game was new, it was exciting and challenaging, you had limitless space to explore and once you saw all there was to see, you could always go to another planet. Nothing was more enjoyable then just zipping around and finding that one excluded place to build your home. Then vehicles and players cities came out and the players saw that it was good. Then SOE rested....while resting they all had crainial retucle inversions (got their heads up their butts) and decided that it was high time to start changing the game. First it was the Creature Handler nerf...which sucked, before this everyone had some CH skills..after...noone did. Next, it was Driod Engineer Rebuilt, was changed the way DE was done, some for better, most for worse. Image Designer changes came next...agian not a good thing. Path to jedi was the next change which I still disagree with but...it works...kinda. Finally came the Combat Downgrade..err Upgrade. What a load of crap. Imagine if someone took your Dodge Ram Hemi Pickup, removed the body and placed it that of a Subaru. Nice body, crappy fame, crappy structure, crappy engine, crappy drive. Same thing happened here. A level 44 mob was a level 44 mob and it didn't matter what they looked like. A Janga hunter (humanoid) at level 44 was exactly the same as a hurton (dog looking animal) at level 44..they just look differant. Experiance used to be given at a pretty steady rate so that you couldn't matter everything in a week and jedi exp was even harder to get ( a master jedi took about 2 years to complete...after unlocking). Now, after the CU there are more master jedi running around than you can shake a stick at and this is supposted to be between eposide 4 and 5....aren't there only supposted to be a few and aren't those few supposted to be in hiding?
SoE has made players many many many promises and has kept very few and of those that they have kept they are usally altered veriants of those originally made. SWG used to be a living breathing thing until SOE put a pillow over it's face because it was "What the players wanted". I have yet to meet a player who actually wanted this. When you post something negitave on the SWG boards, SOE deletes them so that only the positive posts will be avialable for public viewing which...gives the preception that we are in support of anything that SoE throws at us when in reality only a small number of people are and most of them are lemmings who will do whatever they are told. I would not recomend this game to anyone untill a pre-CU server can be established.

What a per-cu server?

This game used to be amazing before November 15, 2005 rolled around. Not only did Sony Online Entertainment screw it up royally, they took all the fun out of this game.

Now Jedi make up 95% of the population, professions are weak and not worthwhile, and it has turned into a first person shooter for people who are trigger happy.

I do not recommend this game, unless you are looking for hours of lifeless fun.

Sony's Imperial Onslaught of Star Wars Galaxies

SWG was a good game.
Sony are greedy people!
They want more kids to play the game!
It was very hard to learn.
That was the appeal - not a shoot 'em up!

Sony have change this game into a shoot 'em up!
Sony have ruined the game!
Sony have ruined thousands of peoples player characters!
Sony now have thousands of SWG refuges going elsewhere!
Sony have made a BOO BOO!
A BIG BOO BOO!

What they failed to remember is:

Children get bored of games, particular games based around films.

E.g. Alien, Terminator etc. etc.

On the whole, kids born after 1983 do not appreciate the full ideology of what Star Wars is!
They do not have the same respect for the films as they only contemporary offering they have are the prequels which lack the magic of the orginial motion feats.

Those old kids, (pre 1983) have more respect; they have an urge to be in the star wars universe - note how I say 'star wars universe' and not 'star wars films' - we don't want to be Luke Skywalker - big wimp! Or Han Solo - old smug git!

We want to be our own creations; use our own ideas - be the identical stormtrooper who just follows orders; be the bloke in the background, a simple chef in Mos Eisley; be the weird guy in the bar who nobody knows - get the idea?

We want to add our own imagination to the star wars universe; add the width and depth to the whole experience. We do not play-act in someone else's ideas; walk in someone else's shadow!

This game in its new format will not last, as kids will get bored and walk away. Sony should not have listened to the moaners on their feedback websites; the hardened fans of SWG where never leaving messages on there! Those hardened fans were too busy playing to moan about it!

Bad move Sony!

Do not buy this game...It is a path to the dark side!!!!

SOE has gone to the brown side of the Force

This game has turned into a complete disappointment. Once it was an amazing, rich, compelling way to immerse yourself in the Star Wars universe and to become a part of that universe. Now, you are forced to be ONLY a clone of one of 9 major characters from the films.

I stopped trying to be Han Solo around age 10...

In Galaxies before the game changes, I was able to be whatever I wanted with my own unique combination of skills and abilities. Now I can only be what Sony and Lucas Arts says I can be...one of 9 stereotypes.

I urge you to reconsider if you are about to buy this game and pay ongoing fees to a company that does not respect its customers or its own integrity.

Hopefully, the game developers will open their eyes and restore this game to its former greatness.
