STAR WARS GALAXIES IS DEAD

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 8 / 10
Date: November 24, 2005
Author: Amazon User

First off let me say that I used to love this game. I played it for 2+ years.

NOT ANYMORE - THAT GAME IS DEAD AND BURIED

Before NGE (New Gaming Experiance), what they called it when they gutted the entire game and pushed a pre-Alpha to live, I liked being able to run around on the ground doing stuff, questing, hunting with friends, jumping into a ship to go into space to shoot down starships... I liked just hanging out with people in it and chatting, the player based economy... The wonderful multibranched tree profesion system that let you do a little of this and that and have fun, and drop the classes/profesions when you got tired of them and try new things...

All of that has been removed.

Most of the vitrolic reaction that you will see here is due to a monsterously botched "upgrade" that was done over strong objections, and pushed out to the live servers WAY before it was ready. The called this the "New Gaming Experiance" or "NGE".

Selling points on SWG these days include:

- A player economy taht has been ruined.
- Crafting that is now pointless.
- An unplayable level of bugs.
- Went from 30 professions down to 9.
- Years worth of in game work wiped away.
- Bad/non-existant quests and experiance to advance.
- Their custmer service is bad or non-existant.
- The interface is the worst I have ever seen.
- Even chatting with other people is now painfully hard.
(So much so people have left for this reason alone!)
- Consistantly good content is broken or removed.
- Your complaints will be at best ignored.
- The player comunity has been destoyed.
- They never have been good about fixing bugs.

Seriously, it is horrifingly bad now.

* There is more that I could say about the way this game has been run, and is being run that would be true and *REALLY* negitive. Amazon says I am not supposed to be spitefull so I will merely point you in the right direction:

Do not buy this game until you have checked out the forums on the official site, be advised that views that they don't agree with there are often deleted. Check out their posting guidelines and read between the lines. At least on person who worked for them in customer relations and actually told customers the truth and did not lie on command to us was FIRED for it.

Don't just take my word for it. Do a google search too on NGE and SWG. This game is ruined and SOE cannot be trusted to ever run a good MMORPG ever again.

I am *VERY* sad to make this review. I used to like this game, and it is not just because they made changes I am annoyed, but because they could not even get them working before forcing them on us. That all the unique and good things in the game were destroyed.

Not all MMORPG's are like this, so don't play this one. :(

Amazon sells many good MMORPG's might I sugest looking at one of the following instead:

World of Warcraft
City of Heros
City of Villians

When they come out:
Dungens and Dragons Online
Star Trek Online

Word around the industry is that Sony will be ending Star Wars Galaxies soon so think very carefully before you buy it.

What I do know for certain is that the servers are empty and no one is playing this game. Take a look at all the negative posts, the only people 5 starring this game work for Sony!

Things look bad for the future of Star Wars Galaxies.

SAVE YOURSELF - - DON'T PLAY THIS GAME!!

I played Star Wars Galaxies for a very short time, I was too bored to continue on with my character. I do however, have an outside view of what happens to people who play this game and love it: They become CONSUMED. When I say consumed, I mean utterly sucked in to this game. My brother has been playing SWG for about a year and on weekends spends about 7 hours a day playing. He literally spends 75% of his free time on the computer, living in a fantasy world that does not exist. He has gotten all of his friends hooked also. His freinds will come over, they go downstairs, and play galaxies for hours on end. I also know another kid who was so obsessed he had to plan his schedule around events happening in SWG. I also have a friend who used to play galaxies and he was so sucked into Galaxies that whenever you tried to talk to him while he was playing, he would just kind of grunt to awknowledge you (event if you asked a question).

Another huge problem with galaxies is that it's a subscription based game. Basically every single month you have to keep paying for galaxies. Ever month, more money wasted on a fantasy world. On top of this robbery, they come out with expansions. The expansions are basically the same as the old game with a little twist. My brother has bought all of the expansion games, and admits that he doesn't even utilize the extra features they allow (flying in space, etc.). There is only one conclusion I can draw from this: Sony Entertainment wants your money no matter how many times they make you repay for the game, no mater how many crappy "expansions" they put out, they just want your money.

I love video games - and there is nothing wrong with playing them. The problem here is that while money is literlly being sucked out of your wallet, you are wasting away your whole day staring at a computer. A word of caution to the wise: If you want to keep your life and money, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

Star Wars Galaxies: The Total Experience

Do not purchase this game. Sony Online Entertainment is the Nazis of the gaming industry and they have destroyed the good Star Wars name. I have played SWG(Star Wars Galaxies) since day one. I mastered 6 professions and unlocked Jedi post CU(combat ungrade). If you have read any other posts you probably already know about the total revamp that SWG has just undergone. This is not a MMORPG anymore, its a MMORPS(massively multiplayer online first person shooter). They (SOE) have lied about their intentions and kept the veterans players around just long enough to get an expansion (Trials of Obiwan) purchase then they announced the NGE(New Game Enhancements). This was a complete dupe and they know it. Some vets signed up for a years subscription right before they announced the changes and now SOE won't refund their money. Think about that for a second. You sign up to play a RPG game then, without warning the game is changed to a RPS over-night. This is unbelieveable and totally irresponsible on the part of SOE and Lucas Arts. Lawsuits have been suggested and may actually have a leg to stand on this time.
This is not the first time SOE has done this. The CU was unwelcomed and unloved, but the basic game was the same and the vets learned to play in groups and have fun. The "turn based" combat system that was the original method of fighting was basically intact. The crafters and other noncombat professions where left alone. This time they changed everything from combat to crafting to creature handling. Most of the professions have been completely deleted. Now think about this, you work on a toon(in game personality) for a year or so. Grinding the low levels, buying the items you need and spending lots of real world time developing your toon. Now, you have spent all this time and money(subscription fees)and are a master creature handler able to tame the mighty rancor like a little dog! Pretty cool right. The next day you logon and find out your toons profession is going to be removed in two weeks! How would that make you feel. Two weeks of notice for a years worth of work. Good times, I think not!
In conclusion, stay away from all SOE products, EQ, Planetside, Matrix online and any others you see. SOE is the worst company that has ever produced a MMO and will continue to listen to small focus groups and the all mighty dollar seeking board of directors that care only for what might be the next big thing, no matter who gets smashed in the processed.

Paying to Beta Test?

What was once a great game has been dummed down in a completely pathetic attempt at 'enhancing' the game.

I've been playing this game on and off for the past year. Generally, I have been satisfied with my gaming experience. There have always been problems with the Sony Online Entertainment Development team introducing game patches which have altered the game to a serious extent. However, nothing in the past compares with the New Game Enhancement introduced on Nov. 15, 2005.

Before NGE players were able to pick up to a mix of three professions out of over twenty possible professions. Many professions would complement each other and others would be completely different. The whole idea about hybrid professions was to perfect your character to your liking. You could be an architect and a marksman if you wanted. My character was a mix of a Master Bounty Hunter, Master Caribener, and part Combat Medic. The twenty odd professions allowed for every character to become unique. Every person who played was different and it added an insane amount of diversity to the game.

Now there are only nine professions. In the old system you were able to pick the skills you wanted to learn by picking them from a 'skill tree'. Now, with the NGE, you can not pick what skills you want to learn, you must follow a predetermined path similar to that of a console game. There is no longer diversity everyone will be one of 9 professions, that's it. Of course, with the addition of the Jedi to a starting profession, it can almost be gaurenteed that the new players will almost always start off as a Jedi.

Producers of the game have gone to extereme measures to let the public know that the players have been asking for such changes and are greatly excited about their new experience. Julio Torres, one producer who has published a "letter" on the Star Wars Galaxies website stating the player base asked for this. If any of the producers took a moment to see what their customers wanted (I.E. the forums) they would realize the public outcry is AGAINST their new gaming experience.

The User Interface is also one of the worst ever made. Usually people will type messages to tell their buddies what to do during an attack while their attacks are in queue with the old toolbar. Now you had to continuously point and click the target to attack them. This makes the game more "action packed". This way of attacking prevents users from easy chatting during an attack and also gives you a headache withing minutes of running around or in circles. If you get motion sickness, i recommend you take dremimine.

If you were a previous player looking to continue, most of your items will be useless as the stats have changed. One weapon i paid one million credits for is now work just about two thousand credits. The states have been...well... it is no longer an adequete weapon to fight a Level 5 NPC.

Player run economy no longer exists as the Item Decay has been removed from the game. So now, if you have a weapon it will never be damaged and you will never have to seek out a weaponsmith to repair it or to buy a new weapon. Many of the items worth millions pre-NGE are now worthless and entirely useless.

This game was pushed live with little preperation and the game experience greatly displays this. The game was buggy to begin with, now the entire game has been rendered almost unplayable due to little prep times. If i were ever to recommend this game to someone, i would recommend it only if they had extra money they didn't care about and if they had nothing left to do with their lives. Other then that, i would not recommend this game to anyone.

Sony Online Entertainment has a lot of work to do to bring this game out of "Beta" tesing. The people who are paying to play the game deserve a real game, not a "Beta" test.

A Great Game Destroyed

This was a great game. I stopped playing for a while (lack of time) and while I was gone they completely redesigned it. The end result is aweful. So bad that they actually included "Are there any servers running the old system? - no." as a question on their FAQ.

Whoever led the redesign needs to be blackballed before they screw up any other games.

SWG turns into a cut-down and drastically limited version of itself on 15th Nov 05

I got on SWG in July 05 coming from WoW because I disliked the loot-oriented high-level-instances-raiding game style, providing no more content there at the moment for lvl60 characters. SWG:TTE was easy to understand and I immediately liked the freedom to explore skill-development and the freedom of choice you have here; I liked the community and online players (most seem to be somewhere between 16 and 40); the Star Wars Universe and such. The game only crashed once or twice for me (like WoW too) the lag is sometimes bad, the game runs nice on my P4/Gforce FC and I didnt experience real show-stopper bugs that prevented me from progressing in my online gameing experience. Oh wait, one quest was broken though. So I was really happy until last weekend when Sony made a big announcement.

As of 15th Nov 2005 this game will be drastically changed and by these changes make many current player upset.

Everyone who started the way of the force during the last 3 months wont be able to finish it to become a Jedi because the New Game Experience will not take these efforts into account; no one was told about these massive changes at the time then so now everybody who ran for it and wont finish is dead disappointed at the very least; and so you cant unlock a second character on the same server; all characters with double professions will be reduced to just one (thus no artisan or crafter can go out on a hunt mission anymore, my combo of master rifleman and master doc isnt possible anymore as many others); the player driven economics of SWG will be destroyed because items dont decay anymore (versus WoW for example, however there professions compared to SWG are limited and not as much as important as they were in SWG); according to Sony one profession was even cut out because just few people play it but I saw several such players on my server - and so on.

Despite the good intent of improving the game the limitations and cut-backs on skill development and professions are massive! Therefore, this what you see here and might be told by friends or saw advertised around is not what you will be playing in a few days!

I think such an overhaul of the whole system would definitely qualify as SWG 2/II or so.

Since Jedi was and is something always special in the Star Wars universe the older and current system in SWG somewhat makes this still something special (and time consumeing), in the NGE Jedi will be an out-of-the-box starting profession. It is common sense to think that soon all servers will be flooded with people trying out Jedi firsthand, so the online gaming experience for the upcoming months will be quite monotone with little diversity, also due to many current players leaving because of the cut-down of their professions, abilities, skills, experience and items.

SWG:TTE as it is right now is great, but on 15th Nov 05 an onward it will be a pale shadow of itself :-( If you like the Star Wars universe go with the other Lucasarts Star Wars games or re-discover your imagination and read the many books in the Star Wars Univers, you will find much more diversity and excitement in there than in the NGE.

I was a BETA vet, there from the first days...things have changed as they do in online games. First, I am a HUUUUGE star wars fan, borderline nerd is my title. I remember before this game came out there was sooo much anticipation for this game, I even 'dreamed' literally of playing it. I 'pretended' to play SWG in Jedi Outcast. And finally I got into BETA.

I fell in love with the fact there the devs did their homework when it came to filling the worlds with places, history, and characters of the star wars universe. There was even stuff from the Expanded Universe (EU) in SWG that even *I* didn't know, which says alot.

This game has reeeaaallly come down hill, I can't say it enough, and coming from me, that's a sad thing to admit. I had so much faith in the devs, hung in there with them for 2+ years but things just got worse and worse. When the game came out it had it's flaws, but man was it exciting. There was sooo much to do in terms of professions, and everyone seemed to teem with excitement about how to obtain the Jedi profession. I remember the unbelievable excitement that would sweep over me if I had the priviledge to hear a lightsaber in the open city. Fast foward to today, most of all the professions are gone and now the entire population is made up of Jedi characters since they are now a starter profession.

I had never played World of Warcraft (WoW) before and heard everyone was going over to that game, but I held my guns and remained faithful. Over time the interface changed, the professions changed, the game layout, the quest system, the skill system...all changed. It wasn't until I finally gave up and went over to WoW that I realized that the SWG interface (which was previously superiour and just fine) ahd completely changed to fit the EXACT look and format of the WoW interface...in fact, everything in SWG I realized had 'upgraded' to mimic the bestselling game. How sad that this once leading game for one of the biggest franchises in the world has degraded to a online wannabe.

New players might enjoy it for awhile, but it gets repititous real quick and if you ever play something like WoW you will realize what a waste of time SWG is since it's nothing buy an attempted (and not successful) attempt to be a clone of the famous game.

I can't tell you how much this saddens me, I had so much hope and expectations for this game, but it's hollow and has long lost that unique flare and excitement, I've moved on and just look for the next LucasArts game, hoping it will help me forget this disapointment.

SOE socks it to their customers once again

SOE took a great game and twice totally changed the game for the worse with no input from veteran players who had invested much in time and money.

The game went from 32 to 9 professions with the professions totally changed. Last April they did the same thing and surprised uw with a totally different game. Neither was an improvement. THEY ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to listen to their customers and as a result have lost tons of players. The servers are now ghost towns.

Total Lack of Loyalty to Playerbase

Not only have they chosen to totally revamp the game 2 times much to the protest of their player base, they have continually lied regarding changes and directions of the game. Claiming to have MAJOR bug fixes on the way only to just release a "NEW & IMPROVED (yeh rigt)" version of the game CHOCK full of its own bugs.
What little play testing is done is very very rushed. Now the game has gone to one of the worst first person shooters in the industry.
Most of its original fan base has left. servers are empty. People buying this game now are sure to be destined to no continuity, lack of prompt bug fixes (yes there are STILL bugs in this game that have exsisted since its release over 2 years ago), and overall a sad gaming experience.
Hopefully, some one will fire all the current devs who have no concept what so ever of what an online rpg is supposed to be and they will hire some who understand listening to their playerbase and informing them IN ADVANCE of MAJOR changes to game play.
Til then, i'll be playing something else.
