An Old Vet from a Different Perspective

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 5

I've been playing this game since launch, watching it since beta. I've been leading a role playing guild(rover) on the Bria server since November of 2003. Its seen its changes and had its drama, but thinking of it from the perspective of someone who is just coming in, this is a good game to buy.

I can say with full honesty that I'm having more fun now the game then ever before, and it all seems to be improving. The PVP(Player vrs Player combat) has gotten better, and the PVE(Player vrs Environment combat) has gotten better but that really doesn't encompass what Star Wars Galaxies is and is controversial anyway. Star Wars Galaxies is about community.

The game has never been about grinding, and its never been about raiding high level places(for the most part). You can still get all of that out, going to level 90, getting Mandalorian armor, doing Restuss(PVP only zone) missions, grinding gcw points, all that fun stuff. But the majority of players either go out with guilds and have fun, PVP, or roleplay.

Trick with Galaxies is finding a good group to do it with. You got griefers to your left and trolls to your right, all a bunch of scum that can put a downer on your day if ya don't got a good guild to call home.

The system is on the upshot, looks like it will continue improving, but it should've had these improvements done three years ago. Us vets have been jerked around left and right by a Dev team without a coherent vision they could get us behind. They still don't have a coherent mission statement for us, and we don't have much trust for them. This has created bad blood between the Dev team and the vets like me, and I got strong feelings on the politics of it all.

As a new player though, thats all dust in the wind to you, and chances are you will find a fun game with good people. If you decide to pick it up, make a character on the Bria server and send a mail to Kazer. I'll straighten you out or point you to a group that might fit your play style.

A very nice game with a huge potential for future expansions

I have been playing this game for more then 2 years already and I still think this is a great game ! I agree that it has seen many changes already since it was first released but that is because the MMO public is changing. When the game was first released the game was all about grinding (doing the same thing over and over again to gain levels). Now with the last 2 expansion packs and the new recent updates they have made the game 100 times more user-friendly : lots of cool quests to do, worlds to explore and easier profession advancements (a clear road forward). It is true that there are still some minor bugs, but that is always the case when such a big update is done. Within a few weeks almost all bugs will be gone because the developers are working hard to get them out. Jedi has indeed become a starter profession, but it is only one of the 9 starter professions (like commando, officer, medic, bounty hunter, smuggler...) It is absolutely not true that 90% are Jedi, I see all kind of professions when I walk around in a city ! Lots of people enjoy being able to play another profession than Jedi because this is one of the few star wars games in which you actually can play another profession than jedi in the star wars world ! I for example like playing a stormtrooper. I sometimes even lead a whole squad of them against a rebel base ! This is the only game out there in which you can do this kind of stuff ! The latest update was intended to change the game in a way so that not only hardcore gamers would feel at home but that also gamers that can only play a couple of hours a day can have fun (like in World of warcraft or everquest 2 (a game made by the same company who made this star wars game)) I suggest you don't listen too much to the opinions of players who have quit this game and are now trying to destroy it just because they don't like the easier gameplay (less grinding) Just try it out (I think there is a free trial on the fileplanet website that you can download) and make your own opinion of the game. I will be playing this game forever because it is the best star wars game around and it gets better with every expansion pack !

A nice change of pace but no directions in my smugglers life?

I can't say I love this game, nor can I say I hate it. I seems there is a lot of angry SWG vet's out there but really I see the same vets online playing the game. I mean, you can't go anywhere without seeing an elder? Are they the same people complaining? Or are they not included in this buch and except the game for what it is now.

I admit, this game has some problems and that is to be expected in an Alpha version. I don't like the fact that creatures or bandits can kill you easily just going outside of a settlement. Most Quests or missions require some travel out-of-town kind of thing but once outside your bombarded with a zoo of creatures and bandits trying to kill you? Is this how SW was? I don't remember the movies being that way? Anyway, direction is another problem. A new player like me has a hard time knowing where to go, who to talk to, what to do to level up? I look at my journal over and over which lists the current Quests you have completed or are in progress or that need to be fullfilled but the one's that need to be fullfilled have no info with them and how do you complete them. Right now I am working on my privater piolet license as a smuggler, working for some guy that I can't remember his mame. My star fighter engine was knocked out with the Quest only half finished so I wander through the help section in the database with no answers and then I return to this guy and he says "don't you have something you should be doing"? I even try to repair my ship but I lack the funds and crafing ability to do so. Finally I decide to just destroy the ship and go back to this guy and he gives me a new one? The I complete the Quest and it's on to the next? Strange game-play? I'm also in the in the middle of working on another Quest with some dude I met at the cantina in Mos Eisley and he/she says to go to Naboo, then to Corsant, then to Endor to find these articles but when I arrive at these planets there is no directional arrow or navigational becon to speek of? I look at my journal again and under Quests/Mos Eisley but there is nothing recorded? Is this a bug or just the norm?

This confusion if not good for the nob's playing this game. My journal also says that I have completed all the Level 0 Quests and now apparently I'm on level one now but there is no indication of this and I have completed other Quests on higher levels such as one on Level seven and a few on Level one and two so they are out-of-order? Does anyone know how this system is suppose to work?

So, now I'm on Endor looking for an article and have no direction whats so ever so I find out you can set waypoints in your data pad for Points of Interest on each planet so I create a waypoint for the Ewolk Tree Village about a 1,000,000,000 miles away from the smuggler outpost and I fly my land speeder out there which takes an hour or so accross the entire Endor planet and finally get there but the Ewolks are not fun at all, they do have an quite impressive village and wait for dark in one of the tree house way up high to look and the sky (this is the only real graphical treat) to see other planets near-by and the big gas gaint of course that it orbits but no direction what so ever on where to go next? Out in the frontier of Endor alone and scared living with an unfirendly, silent buch of Ewolks? Does anyone what to help me a pore smuggler trying to make his way in SW galexies?

Don't Listen to the Power Gamers

I have played SWG for over a year now. Every month the game improves and changes for the better. You will see a lot of negative reviews. These are from POWER GAMES who took one of the 3 combat combos that allowed them to dominate all other players and enemies. They would play for hours on end, by themselves trying to become more powerful than anyone else. Then CU hit. The usualy played for less than an hour, died for the first time in months because they changed the game, and so gave up, angry that anything in the game could possible kill them now.

The new SWG is a team based game. This is very different that it was before. A player that liked team games would have left, leaving mostly people who played an online game by themselves.

Try it out for 2 weeks. You will be hooked. MANY of those that left at first are coming back, and they are all saying the same thing, "I am so stupid, this game is much better than it was before".

I will say that every week we have a new bug. Something gets messed up. Rarely are they game breaking, and often they are fixed byt he next week.

I love this game. It is the best game I've played because it changes all the time. Try it and you will like it.

Old MMORPG player New to SWG

I have played many MMOG's including Anarchy Online since beta and Ultima Online since beta. Yes I agree with some that this has some kinks (IE Bugs) but overall I like how it plays. With that said however I have never played it before the Combat Update so I have no prior experience with that and I have been playing on a friends account for a couple of months and although it can be slow going at times I still find it interesting. There are parts I wish would be changed like the point cap of 250 to something slightly higher so people like me who like being a crafter can still focus on one element and still do some other things as well. Over all I think this is a good game and a work in progress. Since I have done beta tests for years I have no problem playing a current game that might have patches released that are beta releases to see if they fixxed the problems that occure, afterall the programmers can't fix what they don't know is broken. I have run several muds and emulators in my time to know that without player input as to what is found wrong it will never get fixxed, all be it that some things that players find are actually "features" not bugs and are a certain way intentionally. To all the boo-hooers and naysayers you can complain all you want but don't knock a game because programmers are doing their job. Yes fixxing some bugs do inadvertently cause other ones, especially with large games like SWG and any online game for that matter. I enjoy this game enough that I am purchasing it now even when a new update is comming out within the next couple of months, which I am also looking forward to.

All in All I recommend this to anyone who has a love for starwars and for those who love space combat sims since this includes that aspect as well and you can mod/upgrade your ship, and buy/build new ones (from existing templates), for those like me who like to craft there are tones of options and for those who like to do quests, they can be found all over the place just talk to the npcs. If you like the community you can get involved in that too since there is almost always people online from what I've seen and many looking to do group missions. If your just starting watch out for the REDS (if you start playing you will see what I mean). This is one of the higher monthly fees but the more months you pay for at a time the cheaper it gets and there is an option to buy gametime cards at $30 a pop for 60 days of gametime. So come join the starwars galaxy and be part of the community.

Recommed Buy and Play for 60 Days

First off, I'm not affiliated with SOE in any way.

Bottom Line = This game is fun and a recommended BUY. I played for 2+ months before the CU (combat upgrade = major game revamp), and now 2+ months after the CU. So, IMO I'm qualified to give a reasonable review.

The fact is this game is way more playable for new people than it was before the CU. The combat is more balanced. They got rid of the ridiculous "buffing" system (buffing = powering up your characters health stats). Before the CU, you were absolutely forced to pay about 10k credits for a 3 hr buff before being able to complete anything in game. That typically took up to 30 minutes or more just to find a Doc that would buff you. It made casual play almost impossible. Also, if you were a new character, you didn't have a bunch of extra credits for this type of activity. Then, as a new character, you would probably die rather quickly and lose the buff. That means paying 10k again, and repeat process. Now, everyone has higher health stats and there is no need for buffs.

What everyone calls "forced grouping" is not the only way you can play. I solo when I want to. I group when I want to. I even have one of the worst combat professions (Ranger). Now, if you want to gain experience and level up VERY FAST, then you group with 6-8 players. The reason people call it "forced" is because a new player starts at a Combat Level of 1. When you group with a higher combat level character (say CL 80) you essentially become CL 80 as well (well, almost). This allows you to travel in the more difficult regions of the game without being instantly killed and gain incredible amounts of XP fast. Kinda makes sense I would say.

If you are more concerned about the "journey" than the end result, then there is no need to Power Group. Just find a couple of buddies online, and play at your own pace. I recommend placing your primary character on the Valcyn server, only because there are lots of people there.

There are alot of Jedi in this game, thus the timeline is not strictly adhered to. That said, if you don't like seeing all the jedi around, I strongly encourage you to become a Bounty Hunter and terminate as many player character Jedi's as possible. It's fun. It will get your heart pumping. You'll make some great friends and enemies in game if you take up this line of work.

The great thing about this game is that you end up meeting alot of people and you create alot of content yourself (you'll see what I mean if you start hunting Jedi). This game has really become more of a "Knights of the Old Republic" feel than Galactic Civil War. A huge part of the game is either becoming a Jedi or hunting Jedi. This dynamic drives crafting, it drives weapons, armor, guild wars, etc etc.

So buy the game. Give it 60 or 90 days (first 30 are free anyways). In 90 days, you will meet tons of people, probably join several different guilds before you find one you really like, if you choose a combat profession you'll basically become very high level in the first month, and you'll probably unlock your characters Force Sensitive Slot. Then it's your choice whether to pursue the Jedi as a profession, or just keep playing your character as-is.

I like it

Very boring, bugged, quests where no NPC ever moves and its just plain stupid, to much lag and with the NGE combats fun but not professions, a billion jedi wander everywhere and its jsut wrong to have that many jedi. It is still a fun, soacial game with lots of places to explore and venture, but all the planets are almost idenical and all the houses are the same, its just stupid how easy it is to see that sony did a sloppy job.BUT it is still fun at a leval

I really do like this game a lot, the only problem I have with the advertising is that it is somewhat misleading. You can't fly in the Falcon with Han Solo and Chewbacca. Yes you can become a jedi but not right away there are a bunch of prerequisites you must do first and it will take about 6 months to a year to get a jedi.
