Great Game Idea, but too much Exposition/Dialogue

I bought SPM after a friend described the product to me. The 2D/3D concept sold me. It is pretty well integrated into the game, and its cool to play around with.

But: This is not a party game. This is a 1-player quest game. And if you every plan to play it with friends, at the very least, copy some saved games after the unskippable-25 minute introduction.

Overall: SPM is a fun game to play. But that fun game is hidden inside of a less fun game of button-pressing-through-dialogue and redundant boss battling (Nintendo needs to do something to liven up the AI in the next Paper Mario - the boss battles are so mechanical in this game.)

Fun at times-tedious at others

Let me say that I havent played a Mario game since NES and SNES. Liked Mario 1 & 3. 2 was so-so. Super Paper Mario reminds me more of 2. The game itself is fun (slower and not very hard), but the long dialogs, exploring Flipside and stupid tricks like having to run in a wheel for 6+ minutes, bring the actual game to a halt. Also dont think the music is up to the old Mario. But I'm still playing, so I must like something about it.

Wonderful game

I bought a Wii for my son who is 6 a couple of months ago and have been enjoying it almost as much as he does. The only problem I've had at my house is the fact that my wife doesn't play anything but bowling. She's a mario fan and since there has been no Mario title out yet she's felt left out. I downloaded Mario 64 on the virtual console but she preferes side-scrollers. So, when this title came out we bought it the first day.

She's played it more than anyone and that is a testament to how fun this game is. I'll be the first to say it's been the best game I've played on the Wii so far.

I think Nintendo realized that with the great sales of Super Mario Bros. for the DS that it's hard to beat Mario on a platform sidescroller. Everything on the game looks beautiful and the gameplay doesn't require the need to get carpel tunnel by bending over backwards to make a "special" move. I would recomend this game to anyone.

Great Game.

Fun and Challenging

This game can be enjoyed by everyone. The mixing of platformer and RPG styles work very well in this game. Highly Recommended.

This game is really amazing. Combining elements of all the previous Mario games. Great for adults and kids alike. There is a lot of dialouge, but that is part of the RPG aspect.

I am a Super Mario fan ever since Super Mario Bros came out and I'm always looking for something to come close to play. I have a Wii and an N64 system (used to have Gamecube but don't need it with the Wii). I bought Super Paper Mario because I needed something to play but nothing new was available (Galaxy wasn't out yet). I thought it looked dumb and was thinking twice before I opened it. I hated the ongoing dialogue and the neverending name calling between players but once I got to playing I was addicted. I like to play games that make me want to play for hours and then leave me wanting more once I quit playing and this one does that. This game has lots of secrets and endless hours of play. I gave it a 5 because I don't think the dialogue and the sarcastic remarks take a star away from it. Now I just wish Nintendo would come out with a Banjo Kazooie 3.

A rip off

Compared to Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, this game stinks! The battles are worse, the plot is worse, your party is worse, and the bosses stink! If you have any sense at all buy Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door, It's one hundred times better!

Super Paper Mario is a fun, but slow game

I recently bought this game for the Wii, and I can tell everyone that this is a very good game with some flaws. First of all, I consider myself a "near-hardcore" gamer and I currently own a Xbox 360 and a Wii. Now, obviously the number one thing you will notice in the game is the weird graphic style used, like paper, with very colorful colors. This is usual in Nintendo games. The graphics do their job, and anyone expecting Gears of War-level HD graphics might be in a disappointment, but to me the graphics do their job, simple enough. Won't blow you off in the graphics department of course.

Sound is usual Mario fare, with some minor remixes of old music and the usual sound effects of a Mario game, nothing much to see here. Controlling with the Wii Control (no nunchuk required) is very straight forward an easy, yet there are two problems. Holding the Wiimote sideways will be troublesome for people with big hands (like me) since the controller is so small, and pressing the buttons (especially on the D-pad) is troublesome, even your hands could hurt later on, but this is not a so big deal. Next we have pointing at the screen (which I think is a gimmick). It is a tad bit troublesome to aim at the screen and wait for the 'circle' to appear then move it around. Really, I personally didn't like this.

Next we have the meat of the game...Gameplay. It looks like a standard old school Mario game, but oh boy is it far from it. While yes, you run in a 2D-like landscape, the game has many Role Playing (RPG) elements in it. Your character levels up , you gain items, you have a party, enemies will die after you strip them away from all their hitpoints, etc. This can make the game go slow a bit. Then there's the "bane" of the game: Flipping. With Mario you can press A and "flip the world around" from 2D and 3D. This is supposed to be the main aspect of the game, but I find it cumbersome. First of all things are either too well hidden in the 3D plane or are either plain too easy. The 3D plane graphics also look way too plain and lifeless. Pressing the A and backtracking to see if you missed something (especially when you have a stupid timer that takes 1HP each time it passes a certain limit) slows the gameplay to crawl, especially in the first two 'worlds'. On the other side there are the Pixls, which I consider the best addition of this game. They all have different fun functions which are easily activated pressing the '1' button. I won't go too deep into this, nor in the other characters because I might spoil the game for you, but there are plenty cool thins later on. The length of the game is spot on, hovering around the 20 hours if you are an 'average' player, with over 7 worlds (each divided in 4 chapters) to beat. At last we have the story, which nearly makes no sense and sounds cliche, but you never enter a Mario game and expect it to have an awesome story. It does the job, which is to provide the gameplay itself and have a final goal to achieve. I find the story is very slow moving and the excessive talking slows the game to crawl sometimes, though it can be found. I haven't yet mentioned that after you beat a 'World" and get a Pure Heart you return to the town, Flipside, where you need to beat some dumb puzzles and get to the next world. It's pointless and just serves as filler.

I recommend this game, but don't expect the most awesome Mario experience of your life, it can be fun at moments, but boring at others (Chapters 2-3 to 2-4 are BORING). Puzzles can be either annoying or too easy, and flipping is a very bad gimmick. The game is good, and will entertain you, but don't expect greatness.

First off, I'll say what's good about the game. The presentation and graphics are very nice, looking a lot like a flash cartoon of sorts with a nice budget. The controls are pretty easy too, so someone first playing the game shouldn't take too long to understand the controls and really start getting into it. Has a nice sense of humor too.

Now with the cons. First, the game is too easy. Not once did I die, and I rarely had to use anything to bring up my health. Because of this, most of the items you get are worthless. Another con is the story. It's not bad, but it doesn't take long before you can see how the plot will play out. & lastly, is the sound. Once again, it's not bad but you know they could've done better.

If you're a person just getting into games, give this game a rental. You'll probably have fun with this. But if you're expecting a game with a challenge (which is the whole point of a game) look elsewhere.
