NINTENDO, PLEASE REMOVE 90% OF THE WORD BUBBLES!!!!

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 1

This was the first game I purchased for Wii. It was fun, but at times it was so frustrating!!!! I spent 80% of the game clicking through word bubbles, which cant be avoided. At times I was so annoyed that I wouldnt touch the game for days. Aside from the lame story and word bubbles, it was neat. This game requires using your mind, it's not your basic "get-to-the-end-of-the-level" game. Sometimes you have to go back and forth through a level to ask people questions etc. I repeat...this game requires intelligence and critical thinking skills, if you dont have those things, DONT buy this game!!!

Out of Ideas halfway through

I was a huge fan of the first two Paper Mario games, and even before that Super Mario RPG. So, loving the Wii like I do, I expected Super Paper Mario to really top the rest. It absolutely does not.

The concept is actually very cool. You can "flip" which means you go into 3-d mode to discover secrets, avoid enemies, etc. This is a very cool concept, but it is gratuitously overused. Less than halfway through the game, every time me and my friends would come across a puzzle, we would say "Gee, do you think I should flip?" because 90% of the time this was the answer to solving the puzzle.

On top of this, the came becomes, EXTREMELY repetitive and boring about halfway through. There are many (one would be too many) sections in which you have to go through an entire level only to find out that you have to go all the way back to get something, then climb back to the end again. This is not fun, but very frustrating. There are weird and annoying non sequiter puzzles, one in particular that drove us insane: to solve it, you have to press two obscure buttons (like - and left on the d-pad) at the same time, something that you never have to do before or after this point. There are entire worlds that feature no walking or normal mario gameplay. For example, the 4th world (I believe) takes place almost entirely in space, with you riding on a space-squid. This level is unbelievably boring and difficult, and has almost no gameplay connection to the rest of the game.

Plus, there is an insane amount of dialogue. The story is not that bad, but they mess it up by having so much talking that it becomes impossible not to skip it. I mean like for every hour you play the game there's probably 15 minutes of talking between characters. That's ridiculous.

So overall, it is a pretty fun game that gets way less fun after about the 3rd chapter (out of 7). It just becomes such a droll that you don't care about the story or even beating the game anymore after a while.

**(edit)**Having now played Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on the Gamecube now, I would highly recommend that you pick up it instead of Super Paper Mario. It is incredibly fun and you'll be using the wii features about as much playing a gamecube game anyways.

I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

excellent

No matter how many times I play Mario, it never ceases to amaze me. Played this with some friends and we couldn't stop laughing at it's silliness yet awesome fun factor. Recommended for all ages.

Although I only played the first couple of minutes of this game, it is pretty fun. I've played Paper Mario on the 64, but this game looks awsome.

One of my favourite games ever of all time

I loved this game. The only (and I mean ONLY) complaint I had with it is the loooooooooooooooooooooong dialog between the bad guys and the good guys...and between the bad and bad and good and good guys, too. It's LONG-winded in places, but if you can manage to overlook that huge detail, this is one of the best Mario games ever made. Ever. I played it right to the bitter end (incl. the Flopside Pit of 100 Trails...twice).

A good time!

Fun at times, but not without fault

Let me preface this review by saying that I'm amazed at how strongly some people feel the need to stick up for this game when a bad review criticizes it. You may love this game, but it isn't without some problems, and it's good to identify these so that the developers can avoid them in the next Paper Mario title.

First, the good:
* I enjoyed the graphics in this game. Many people thought that they were simplistic and not indicative of the power of the Wii, but I thought that they were cute and fit the story very well. I also enjoyed the music and found that it was usually well paired to the scenes.

* Additionally, there were many parts of this game that were a lot of fun, from some of the more challenging puzzles in the harder levels (after you've gotten all the characters and many Pixls) to fighting the various bosses.

* I also didn't mind that the majority of the game is spent holding the Wii remote sideways. Not every game for the Nintendo Wii can be Rayman or WarioWare. One of the great things about the Wii is that the controller was designed in such a way that it's possible to have a variety of different types of games designed for it. It isn't necessary to fully exploit the Wiimote for every game: this is what originally happened with the touch screen in the Nintendo DS and led to an early period of very bad titles for that system, until developers learned how to use it to enhance games (or even ignore it completely in some cases) instead of trying to force it into their games as a gimmick.

Now, for the weak:
* Some of the tasks that you have to do are downright BORING. As an example, consider the level where you need to earn a million rubees. To do this, if I did it right, you have to jump up and hit a block at least 300 times, and then run in a wheel (essentially just holding right on the d-pad) for three or more minutes. How is that fun? Also, wandering around Flipside / Flopside trying to find things, which involved no action and usually just searching out MacGuffins without really furthering the story, got dull and took longer and longer after each chapter.

* Way too much dialogue. Some of it is funny, but a lot of it is just tee-hee funny as opposed to ROFL funny, and some of it is just slow and silly and doesn't even really advance the plot very much (especially the interactions between Count Bleck and his henchmen).

* This game feels like neither an RPG (there isn't much depth of character or plot) nor an action game (too many parts of it are too slow for that). It almost feels like someone tried to take a bit of both, duct tape them together, and pass it off, which, IMO, doesn't really work. This is, of course, just personal opinion: I've never particularly liked the Mario RPGs, though, so it may just be me. I've always found them to have way too many MacGuffins (i.e. go here, get this, bring it back to me) and way too little depth.

Overall, worth a try, but rent it first for a weekend to decide if it's your cup of tea.

Kinda Boring... and annoying

I was a huge fan of the last couple Paper Mario games. This one annoys me because it's not as deep or challenging as an RPG (like past games) and not as fast and fun as a regular Super Mario. It's the worst of the best worlds combined. It comes off as more of a bad action game or a simple RPG... it's too easy and too slow. Way too slow to be an action game and way too thin to be an RPG. Didn't like it. Spent about 10 hours playing it. I'd rather play something else. The graphics are kind of crappy. The music will put you to sleep. Wish they would have just made another regular Paper Mario game. Hopefully they'll put Mario's old RPG's on the Wii download service. Looking more forward to those.

Not a fun game

Don't buy this game. Too much BS reading. I bought this for my 11 years old son and he didn't like it. He got stuck after crossing the first bridge. The game is now sitting there collecting dust!

Very fun game

This is a very fun game. If you're a Mario fan, it's the best game for the wii until Super Mario Galaxy comes out. It's very dialogue heavy, but it is not very complicated, and should be understandable for little kids.

A lot of fun!!

This game is really a lot of fun for the casual gamer. This game won't drive you crazy making you run around looking for clues to get by in the game. It is really not a true RPG like the past paper mario series, however it is still a lot of fun.

This game is a little short if you just play through the main story. However there are side quests that can keep you busy for many more hours such as collecting cards, recipies, and treasure hunting.

To the more experienced gamer this game may be too easy for them. To the casual gamer this game is probably just right.

PROS:
1. Nice colorful graphics
2. Nice music
3. Controls are easy to learn
4. Funfactor

Cons:
1. Way too much text to read. Some are important so you can't just keep pressing on the button to get rid of the text cuz you may miss something.
2. Game is a little too short if you just play story mode
3. Game may be too easy for the more experienced gamer.
