I've been waiting for this game for what seems like forever. After being patient for over a year it was finally released. I must say i'm a little dissappointed. The game is good, especially visually, but it doesn't pack the punch the first one did. First of all i won't give anything away, but the new character (is bad). It seems that you end up watching more than playing, which is great, the cutscenes are awesome, but the codec gets old fast. I don't remember feeling bored or agitated at it in the first one. The main point of both games is the story. I didn't like the plot behind this one at all. There are some cool aspects like the characters and bosses, but you don't get to fight as many bosses in this one and that's something i truly enjoyed in the first one. Remember how cool it was to take on a tank or the Hind in Metal Gear Solid. There's nothing as fun as that(although there's something close). Remember how cool it was to beat Psycho Mantis, raven, Ninja, Sniper Wolf, ect? Well there's nothing like that here either. I guess i just built the game up to be something that its not, and that's my fault, but i still can't get over how empty the game made me feel after beating it in half the time it took me to beat the first one. Still it packs enough innovation and familiarity to attract new fans and keep old ones and the graphics are bar none. I just wish it was something...better.
A different flavor of MGS, but with the same soul

This game is intense. I bought it on it's release day, and played it that night for eight straight hours. It's that engrossing. I have since beaten it twice, and that's not because it's easy or anything: it's that I love it enought to keep playing it that much. They're saying it takes 12-15 hours to beat. I clocked in at 12:55.
Some people are critizising the philosophical views expressed in the game, but well..for me the first game in the series (on the PSONE) blew me away not only in it's immersion, but also it's somewhat trancendant-ness over just bieng a game. It was a movie, a book, and a game in one. This game gets you thinking as well, and that's not bad. If this game didn't preach, it wouldn't be different from any other action game on the market. Kojima, the creator of the series, is using this platform to get his mindsets across, like any good movie director does.
(You CAN make it a Die Hard-ish thing, too..we all need that sometimes.)
The emphasis is stealth and espioniage, not terrorism or violence. In this chapter of the MG series, Kojima talks about freedoms, the digital age, and censorship among other topics.
(For those that aren't familiar with a game that talks about issues like this..BUY IT AND SEE)
You will be thinking about this game when you're not playing it, and when you are, there's nothing else to think about.
oh..and there is scads of replay value in this. It's no one-shot. You buy it today, and find yourself playing it five years from now, having beaten it tens of times over.
Really a game?

I was estatic to purchase this game, being the sequel to one of the best games ever. However, upon playing said game, I was confused as to whether it was a game or a movie. I watched about thirty minutes of movie for every five minutes of game play, including some soap-opera type material which was extremely boring. Not exactly what I would call a sweet game. The graphics are good though.
Better than the original.....but......

MGS2 is an awesome game and well worth the wait. The graphics are phenomenal, the playability is great and the story is good.
There are only 3 things that I didn't like about the game, but are easy to live with:
1. Too many video sequences and too much talk-time on the Codec. This is a "tactical espionage action" game, not a movie. I was a little irritated when control of my character was taken away and we moved into yet another video sequence. But I can live with it.
2. *SPOILER* The switch from Snake to Raiden in the Tanker Phase of MGS2 is a little annoying. I was initially irritated that I now had to play this little VR soldier-wannabe instead of a tried and true merc like Snake. But he redeemed himself quickly; again, I can live with it.
3. The ONE thing I would change in the game is the WHINING GIRLFRIEND! She has no place in the game, and if they want to show a relationship, do it quickly and quietly. Snake and Naomi never started talking about their first date (not that they had one, but...) or anything like that. And she's supposed to be an analyst, the LEAST she could do is use Raiden's codename. Talk about DUMB.
Other than those 3 things, which are easily forgiveable, it's an awesome game. Can't wait to see how it turns out!!
Outstanding, yet flawed game

When you're actually playing this game, it's unbelievable - no doubt the best PS2 action game to date. Unfortunately the game gets bogged down in unnecessary side plots and video sequences - especially toward the end of the game when it should be building toward an action packed crescendo. Instead, you wind up watching ridiculously contrived conversation between poorly developed characters, in a head spinning series of plot twists and double crosses that leaves you asking "who cares? I just want to kill something!!" That said, when the game is on, it's awesome. Especially during sniper mode, when you can really take it out on some unsuspecting terrorists...
Buy This Game!!! You don't know what you're missing!

Wow, I just finsihed beating this game, on very easy! It still took me forever to find people and things. This game has everything you could possibly want in a video game. The whole snapping peoples necks and kicking the ... out of them is totally trick. The game is stocked full of surprises and sick twists that you don't see coming. Sometimes, I probably get more nervous playing than Snake or Raiden. This is definetly the illest game for the PS2. I can't wait to get Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3. Just play this game and you'll know what I'm talking about.

metal gear solid 2:sons of liberty is a really great game. i like the 2 story line part were u are snake then raiden. in my opinion the graphics are pretty good but the angles and posture of your character isnt all that great. this is extremly fun game and takes awhile to to beat unless u play for 4 hours a day. its not that its that hard its just so long. the one thing i hate about this game is the short movies. right after you kill someone it goes into a movie. also at the end of the game there is a very long story that u cant skip. also i think it is stupid when your raiden and before you fight snake the colonel goes nuts. also in one part raiden(jack) runs around naked covering his thing. then if u go into the chair a juice box covers his thing.
overall this is an awsome game and should buy if u like role playing games and a game that will take a while
Great gameplay, but cut scenes were too much.

Don't get me wrong, I like this game... that is when I'm playing the game and not getting bogged down with cut scenes and worthless conversations.
Cut scenes are a valuable part of any game, conveying needed plot elements, but they went a little overboard on the scenes in this game. Do we really need 25 minutes of cut scenes at a stretch? In the whole game, there must be 3 or so hours of cut scenes, and in my estimation that's too much.
Some of the communications between characters were a bit rediculous, and the whole girlfriend issue was just plain annoying.
If it weren't for the excessive cut scenes, I would easily give this game 4 stars, maybe even 4.5.
And if any of the development team who created this game reads this, I congratulate you on a great game.
Not as good as the first, but still a worthy sequel.

Metal Gear Solid remains one of my favorites games ever to this day. The game may have a few nay-sayers, but nobody can deny the epic feel of the series and exellent characters, story, gameplay; it's all there. Now onto Metal Gear Solid 2; it was one of the most anticipated games of all time, for me and for a lot of people; in my opinion it lived up to the hype. The main things in this game that make it not as good as the first are the characters are a little less interesting, you don't get to play as Solid Snake(except for the first couple of hours) and overall the level design, and the way the story unfolds aren't up to par. Still though, Metal Gear Solid was such an awesome game, that it's hard to duplicate; Metal Gear Solid 2 may not be as good, but it's still a great game.
Gameplay: 9.9/10
One thing that is done so well in the series is the gameplay; the control is perfectly done, from the running around the corners, to the stealthy slow walk when your sneaking up behind a guard, it's all so perfect. Then when you move onto the more advanced moves like: Breaking necks, fighting moves, or when you go into first-person mode to aim your gun in precise spots. It all goes so smoothly! MGS2 does improve on a lot of things in this area, like the A.I. of the enemy characters is so much better this time around, and all of the stealth moves that are in this game are just much easier, and better to use. The level designs are pretty good too. I thought the areas in MGS were a lot more fun, and definitly more of a variety too. In MGS2 your stuck in one area through-out pretty much; this to me was a big disappointment, but not big enough of one to actually make the game boring. It's not like they could have done anything else with it though; you're stuck in one place out in the middle of the ocean, so it's all they could do. Another complaint are the characters; while they are cool in their own way, they don't even begin to compare to the greatness of the ones in MGS. Plus playing as Raiden, while teaming up with Snake at some points is a disappointment as well; Raiden is a good character, but would have been better in a secondary character role; like maybe teaming up with Snake and helping you out in a few situations. Kojima wanted to do this so you could see how Snake is from a different perspective; while this is definitly neat, it's not what we want. Afterall Snake is one of the best game characters of all time. One thing that has been done perfectly in both games is the difficulty; there's: very easy, easy, normal, hard, very hard, and extreme. There is a perfect setting for every type of gamer out there; a lot of companys could learn a thing or two from MGS, and add this much of a variety(or just add a difficulty setting to begin with! I'm pointing at you Nintendo) in difficulty settings in their games. The final thing to touch on in this category is the story; quite possibly the best part in this game. It's massive and really good. The story alone has kept me coming back for more; I've now beaten the game four times in the two years I've had it. Basically it took me two play throughs just to understand most of the story, and after three times I understood completly. That's how complex it is. Many people complain about it being too confusing, and I can see why; many people don't have the time to play through the game as many times as I have, so they will never be able to understand how truely great it is. I do believe that if Konami had more time, it would have been played out perfectly, and you would understand it 100% in just one play through. I have a friend who has said he took notes of the important stuff throughout the game, and a lot of the little things, and he looked over that at the end of the game and it helped big time. Not something I did, but it might be something you want to do to help. -note- prepare for the ending, while it's one of the coolest ones I've ever seen, they throw a lot of stuff at you at once.
Graphics: 9.9/10
For the time the game came out, it was definitly up there at #1. The graphics engine is perfect, and the artistry is so amazing. If you like awesome graphics with your game, then you will not be disappointed; all around great stuff here.
Sound: 9.6/10
Great sound effects, voice acting, and music all rolled into one package. The music is intense, sad, and happy when it needs to be, and without a track this masterful, the game wouldn't have been nearly as good. My hats off to Konami!
Overall(not an average): 9.7
I gave Metal Gear Solid a 9.9 when that came out, and MGS2, while not as clever, comepletly deserves a score of 9.7; it improves big time in the control department and story, but it lacks the greatness of the first one everywhere else. Lets just hope Kojima comes back for a third one.
No. 1 Game for the PS2?

Metal Gear Solid 2 (MGS2) is the best game I have ever played. Period. The details and effects are as real as you and me. MGS2 is an action packed game that has a huge excitement factor. This game will make you think, and it also has numerous secrets that will keep you playing for hours. Not only that, but the story line is precise and to the point. The only thing that is only satisfactory is the fact that there is too much dialog. What I mean by this is that as a person is playing MGS2, more often than not, the flow of the game is interupted by a short "movie". This tends to get boring, and the excitement starts to ebb. Other than that, I would truly recomend this if you are into games that are action packed, a little difficult, and makes a person think.
