this game is well designed with an interesting storyline. it's true that you'll need to spend more time to watch the story instead of playing it, but that doesn't mean bad. for one thing, the sound effects, music, and grahpics are excellent. also, it doesn't need to wait long to load the game--average waiting time from scene to scene is only 2-3 seconds.
5 Stars for the graphics and gameplay...not the storyline!

I will not dispute the fact that "Metal Gear Solid 2" is definately an excellent game, with some extra features that its predecessor ("Metal Gear Solid" which is also an excellent game) did not have such as first person view and hanging / climbing. However the storyline towards the end of the game completely robs the espionage / tactical feeling that was once felt when playing "Metal Gear Solid". The end of this game somehow twists into some philosophical explanation of life and reality, and I found myself pondering about what that actually had to do with Metal Gear?
I was also disappointmented about the fact that you play as Solid Snake for a small portion of this game. When I first started playing the game, I was very excited because we see Solid Snake still in action, though he has aged. He is indeed a legend! If you have played "Metal Gear Solid", then you are reminded of the cool weapons and attack features such as breaking necks, while you play as Solid Snake in "Metal Gear Solid 2". And then the excitement ends, when you now play as some rookie named Raiden. That feeling of being a "legend" is diminished once Raiden comes along.
The story starts to get interesting as you proceed through the game, however you begin to notice that you are watching more and playing less. The game slowly becomes more of a movie than a video game, and the story gets very boring. It moves away from an exciting plot about an ultimate Metal Gear, terrorists, and nuclear danger to some crap about reality and our role in life. I was very disappointed! Not only that, but this game is not that long! It is shorter than "Metal Gear Solid"!
Definately buy this game because the graphics, gameplay, and weapons are great! It is a fun game that is very exciting for the first half of it. However if you were a fan of "Metal Gear Solid", then don't have any high expectations of this sequel. When you finish the game, it is implied that there will be a "Metal Gear Solid 3". I just hope that the storyline for that game will revert back to some sort of excitement, however I don't know if it can recover after this!
No question about it...Hands down--Best Game of the Year!!!

This is an excellent title. I played the first Metal Gear on the NES back in 1989-90 and I had no idea that this series was only beginning or that this would become one of my favorite series of games, on par with Castlevania, Metroid, and Zelda. Some might be a little put off with the drastic plot change about two hours into it--I admit that I was too, at first--but if they can look past that, they'll see a game that easily outpaces the masterpiece of the first game.
Storyline, gameplay, graphics, sound--you name it--this has to be my favorite game since...well Metal Gear Solid. I will admit that the gameplay may not be for everyone. But for those who can get the past the stiff learning curve (for newcomers to the series), drawn out dialogue, and the endless barrage of cut scenes, they will be well-rewarded. I personally don't mind all of that stuff because this is not a game--it's an experience. The interactive elements in the environments, the different approaches to getting by certain scenarios, collecting all the dog tags, etc. all contribute to something that transcends other game series.
However, I highly recommend newcomers to the series to play through Metal Gear Solid to get the full experience (...).
I'm looking forward to further installments, as the series creator Hideo Kijima says that the series will live on. YES!!!
Great for spy movie fans and Metal Gear fanatics

My review is a bit slanted because I have been a Metal Gear fan since the Nintendo version. This game was one of the reasons I opted to go for the PS2 gaming platform. That said, I have to admit that at first, I was a bit annoyed with this game, because parts of it had a 'play a little' -> 'cut scene -> 'play a little more' -> 'cut scene' feel, but as I continued to play (and try it again from the beginning) I began to really like how it all came together. This game is an interactive spy movie, and plays as such. Realize that, and the game design makes sense. The level of detail for such small things as shooting bottles is amazing -- Hideo Kojima is insane! Anyone who wants to be part of a spy / action movie or is a Metal Gear afficionado should enjoy this game.

Simply put, Metal Gear Solid 2 is great. It has all the best elements of espionage: threat detection, elemination, observation, and all without being seen. MGS2 is the rare game that gets it all right. Play the spy Solid Snake as you try to unravel a terrorist plot revolving around a new Metal Gear, capable of even more destruction than the last model. The twist in the second half of the game should NOT be missed. All in all, this is something you should definitely add to your PS2 library.
The Best Movie I've Ever *Played*.

From beginning to end, the look and sound of MGS2:Sons of Liberty is right out of a great action movie, something like "Clear and Present Danger" meets "Commando". You control Solid Snake, a hardcore mutha who would make Schwartzenegger shake in his shorts, as he infiltrates an oil-tanker to uncover its secret cargo. While onboard, a terrorist group seizes the ship, and all hell breaks lose. From there, the plot rapidly spirals out of control as you learn about the cargo, the Sons of Liberty, and eventually stop WW3. There are some serious plot twists for old fans of the series, too.
The gameplay is the star of the show - you must sneak Snake past his enemies and their various traps and detectors. Each area presents its own little "puzzle" to figure out, and the amount of manuevers you can perform is unbelievable - hang from a railing, hide in a locker, crawl under a table, almost anything you did while playing "Hide 'n Seek" as a kid, you can do here. Best of all, if you are spotted, the game doesn't punish you but simply shifts gears, into a "Shoot and Run" style of play in which you must elimate the guards until you can find a spot to hide again. Gradually, the alarm is called off. Perfect.
As usual for this series, the bad guys you run into are amazing human beings, with real personality. Konami has a knack for inventing compelling heavies, and I think the ones in MGS2 are actually better than those in the first game. The boss encounters that correspond are actually weaker, though, with not much new to distinquish them from the orignal MGS - just run and shoot, figure out the puzzle, then move on. There is another sniper level, another torture scene, and a few underwater mazes to break up the sneaking.
The plot is ultra-cheese, like some mad Anime film about reality and truth. The developers get too excited about their ideas, and as a result we sometimes are forced to listen to 10-minute conversations while Snake is hiding just inches from the enemy. Ridiculous. But my only REAL complaint is that this game is TOO SHORT. That's a fancy way of saying I wanted more, lots more, because I was having too much fun. Not a bad complaint for a video game to have. If you play through and find yourself wanting more of the same, check out the original, MGS1, which has a great PC version...

I remember way back when, there was a little known game for the Nintendo game called Metal Gear. It was a game where stealth was emphasized instead of going in Guns Blazing. about fifteen years later, Hideo Kojima has brought the game back as a sequel to one of the most popular Playstation games of all time. Metal Gear 2 is a game with one of the most well-known concepts...now. If you don't know the basic story of the game...Then I'm not gonna tell you lest I spoil anything, which would lose the point of playing the game. But, the game is a joy to play and even more than that, a masterpiece to watch. The detail that went into this game is one of the best I have ever seen and the way you can manipulate the environment is quite impressive as well. Also, it is quite fun to mess around, take pictures and generally screw around in the game...it just is. So I can whole heartedly recommend that you go out and buy this game. But, if you don't have much love for this genre of game then at least try it and if you fall in love with it as the rest of the gaming world has then buy it. Enjoy! :)
Without a doubt the reason PS2 was made.

This is one of those games that you must own. One way or another you msut own this game.
The continuation of the Metal Gear series hits it's 4th chapter in this game that will goe down in history. You control Solid Snake in this 2 chapter game for chapter 1. Your primary objective is to get photos of the New Metal Gear Ray. However when Russian Mercenaries take control it's up to Snake to guarentee that it does not get into their hands.
Chapter 2 you control the new guy Rayden. FOXHOUND has been reformed and he is the first to fully complete their training. In his first real mission he is sent in to rescue the PResident of the United states from a terroirist trio known as Dead Cell, and from the same Russian Mercenaries found earlier. Along the way you meet up with Lt. Pliskin, Mr. X, Emma Emerich and Stillman all of whom help you on your mission. Meanwhile the rumor of an even more powerful Metal Gear looms on the Horizon.
What makes this game so incredible is it's accuracy and enjoyment factor that make sthis hours of fun. For example you can hold up guards and steal their dog tags (for bonus items), once held up you can torture them....
Another cool factor is the ability that for once you don't have to kill the guards, you can get a tranquilizer gun and shoot them with that so you don't inadvertadly alert the guards. Depending on where depends on how effective and how long.
Over all this is one fo those games that in the end everyone needs to hold in their library. Just like Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, or even Gran Turismo 3, you need to have this game in your gaming library.
This game is awesome

The title says it all here folks. This game has great gameplay, an awesome storyline, and lots of hidden little goodies (the whiny guy from MGS1 is back, but you have to find him). If you liked MGS1 you'll like this one. The one thing that is kinda bad is that the ending is pretty dull, but it ends with a cool cliffhanger (foreshadowing a possible MGS3).
PERFECT, AMAZING, AND OUTSTANDING!
