I just picked up my own copy of MGS2 today and the graphics are unbelieveable. This game so fluid and the effects are mind-boggling. IGN gave this game a great rating and rightly so. If you do not rent or buy or play this game at all, you will miss out in quite a bit. I just snuck behind a guard and made him surrender....then I shot him anyway (hehehe). Even if you don't play the game, if you witness someone playing it first-hand, you absolutely have to watch the introduction. It is hands down the best introduction I've seen in a video game.
I bought a PS2 for three main reasons
1) It plays DVD's
2) It plays PS1 AND PS2 games and lastly...
3) It has Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Go and buy this game now. You won't be sorry.
this game frigin rocks

This is definitely the best game for any system out there. If you liked MGS:1 then I highly reccomend buying this game. So much more to do than the first one. In this one you can accually "free shoot" at different things. (And the pics inside the lockers are great.)I would go over the maximum of 1,000 words that is limited to a review if I was to use every word to descibe this game. There is one word that I hate using because it's so common but I keep coming back to it. Cool.
Too bad it had to live up to it's predecessor

See? This is why I hate it when people review something they have not played yet!!!
Ok so where to start? Well let's see...
I feel tricked since looking at the box cover, reviews the demo release with Z.O.E. and all pictures on the Internet someone would assume that you play with Solid Snake, well, nothing further from the truth, you take the role of Solid Snake only at the very beginning, the prologue, pretty much, looking for the new Metal Gear.
The dialog on this game is ANOYING! at certain parts of the game there is so much dialog that in 1 hour there are only 7 minutes of game play, the rest is basically cut-scene, which would not bother me if it were relevant to the game but it turns into a soap opera when the characters start talking about material that is completely irrelevant to the game play in, what my guess is, the desperate attempt to add some drama. I do like it when game designers add some drama to their games, but you have to see for your own eyes what I am talking about. Now I know I can stop these scenes with the tap of a button but I really don't want to disrupt the story since that is a mayor point in Metal Gear.
I'm not saying you should save your money, the game is worth purchasing, but I don't agree to the fact that while GameSpot gave Metal Gear Solid a score of 8.5 and a 9.6 to this one. In my opinion the score should be the other way around since "Sons of Liberty" is still a good game but it does not measure up to it's predecessor.
The good things,
The graphics are spectacular, especially some of the cut-scenes are so mesmerizing that left me awed.
The game play is as smooth as it's original, there are a few things they have added, like you can hang from walls, that do take things a step up.
The story, well sorry, I said the good things :), I just wish there was a little less dialog that's all, and some of you are going to miss Solid Snake (even though he is in the game you don't play him any more)
The soundtrack is pretty good, it does give the right atmosphere at all times, sometimes it overtakes the actors voice and is a bit tough to hear what they are saying, as so do the sound effects (which are also great)
In any case, I hope you enjoy the game, it's a good game, but be forewarned it does not have the replay value it's predecessor had.
Could be the best ever

I just rented Zone of the Enders so that I could get my hands on the demo for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation is my favorite game of all time and its second coming will not dissapoint. The demo starts off with a beautiful cinematic scene that leads right into the gameplay. The transition from cinema to in-game graphics is seamless. Once you get the idea of how to play the game and what your purpose is, that is when the fun begins.
This is the most realistic game I have ever played, and I'm 21 year old who's been playing since the days of Pong. There are so many things you can do. You can put an enemy to sleep and then drag him around. You can throw him off of the ship or hide him in a locker so that others won't find him and be alerted. You can choke the enemy to death instead of putting them to sleep. You could just get it over with quickly and shoot them, putting them out of their misery. The list goes on and on. From ice melting to an extremely interactive environment - if you see it you can shoot it or do something with it - REAL doesn't come close enough to describing this game.
The graphics are beautiful (rain and lighting effects are astonishing, as are the realistic trails of blood, how glass breaks, muzzle flashes, explosions, animation, etc.) and are only outshone by the spectacular gameplay. It's intuitive and very fun. I have been playing the demo for two days straight after work and still cannot get enough. The story is interesting as well, and I'm interested to see how the voice-acting is in the North American release (in the demo, the spoken voices are in Japanese, and there are subtitles).
I cannot wait for the full game to be realeased. It's a total shame that I have a life because come November 16th, my girlfriend, family, fraternity brothers, and teachers might forget who I am because I'll be playing this game non-stop.
My only minor gripe is that the collision detection for an enemy soldier being carried hasn't been perfected. Their limbs are supposed to react to running into walls, being dragged down stairs, etc, but so far all they do is clip and go right through the object. I'm sure this will be fixed by the final release (at least this is what I have been led to believe) and if so this game will be well worth 5 stars as the greatest game ever made. Even if this problem isn't fixed, it should still retain that title. If you liked the first, played any of the old Metal Gears, possibly on the good old NES, or ar a fan of stealth, action, or adventure games, you should be just as excited as I am for this game to be released. It'll be a happy Thanksgiving for sure.

To all you mgs lovers out there, if you like the first one you'll like this, this game has the best graphic's that anyone has ever seen before, they'll be talking about this game for years to come. Snake has loads of new move's that he can do, like a dive into a roll, or the new first person view. If you want to sample this fantastic game, get your self down to you nearest game store and buy (the also just as exicting) zone of the enders. With zoe you get a free, yes a free demo of mgs2, this has been out for sometime so if you don't have it yet, where the hell have you been!! I think one of the best parts of the game is the effects, there truely amazing, the rain, the blood, the foot prints. Any one that would see it would think it was a film! If you don't get this game you will be missing out on one of the best, most wicked titles to come out on the ps2!! And i hope you will enjoy it as much i will!! c ya

The quality of this game is quite stunning. You will be in awe at just about every second of play you have on this game.
From the lifelike and beautiful graphics, to the tremendous storyline, you are in for a treat.
This game must have taken ages to make! The amount of polish, extras, and hidden things in this game are beyond believable.
Every time you play you will find something new to do.
Everything from doing pushups to increase your strength, to shooting radios out of guards hands, to 'holding up' enemies at gunpoint.
Theres nothing really i can put to words here. This is one of those rare games that leaves a memorable impression years later. Kojima, the maker of the MGS series, is a video game genius and creates a true piece of art with each Metal Gear game.
This game is as close to gaming perfection and seemless action as you can possibly get.

After playing the first Metal Gear Solid, I couldn't wait for this game to come out. I was a huge fan of the first, and I just had a feeling that the 2nd would be just as good as the first. Well, it came out, and guess what? It was. This is more than just a video game, this is more like a video game masterpiece. There had never been any game released before this that could even compare to this, and really the only other game today that can compare is Metal Gear Solid 3.
For one, this game is visually breathtaking. The graphics make full use of the PS2's capabilities, and what you get is literally PERFECT graphics. Everything is beautifully detailed and realistic, and you can see things like rain bouncing off enemies or your character. You can also knock over or shoot glass bottles, etc. and actually see their contents spill out (I know it's not that interesting, but it's so cool to see). The sound is also phenomenal, and this game probably has the BEST music from a video game ever. Harry Gregson Williams is a genius, and the theme he wrote for this game is epic.
However, there is one thing about this game that stands out above everything, and that is its story. Until I played this video game, I had never played a video game where you actually had to think about what just happened, or you had to really pay attention in order to understand the story. It's like watching a movie, and although this seems to irritate some people, I personally love it. And, the twist at the end was just crazy (Actually, there are two twists, each more shocking than the next!). The one negative thing about this is because the game is so story heavy, you will probably spend about as much time playing as you will watching cinematics and codec conversations. Another thing to note is that you DON'T play as Snake the whole time, but rather as a guy named Raiden for the majority. People can't stand him, but it doesn't bother me. It doesn't affect the way you play the game at all.
Overall, this game is in my opinion the BEST game on PS2. However, because of certain aspects such as the complicated story and Raiden, I'd recommend you rent the game first. If you loved Metal Gear Solid for PS1, you may or may not like this one. If you are able to not let the long cinemas or Raiden bother you, then you will definitely love this game. There is alot of violence in this game if you choose to shoot people(you can sneak past them or knock them out also), and the complicated story might make it inappropriate for little kids. Other than that, this game is a must buy. It belongs in any video game collection.
