I recently bought a Playstation 2 and immediately I rented Metal Gear Solid 2. After playing the first level I thought "wow...but". While this game has some truly awesome elements, there's certain things that didn't sit right.
Story: Not to spoil anything, our hero from Shadow Moses(Metal Gear Solid plot) Solid Snake arrives on a tanker which is supposedly carrying the new Metal Gear. As Snake investigates, he gets drawn up into a huge quest. The problem with the story is that it just seems too much. You'll get double crosses, double double crosses, being told that this is the truth only later you'll discover somebody else will tell you the REAL truth and so on. Just gets confusing at the end.
Graphics: Wow. How purdy. Seriously these graphics are amazing. Close-up's of Snake show his hair flowing perfectly and little things. While outside you can go First Person mode and look to the rain and you can see rain fall on the camera.
Gameplay: This is fun. So many different things to do. That's if you actually get to play. It seems like very soon after one cinema stops does another start up. Then right after that there's another one. Be prepared to watch a lot.
Music/Sound: This score belongs in a movie, and that's a good compliment, by the way. Wow, how huge sounding. Gives it a very cinematic-epic feel to the game. The voice-acting is awesome. Each voice compliments the character perfectly, I just had a problem with Raiden's whiny geek-boy voice.
So overall despite those flaws, you should definately check this one out and see what made magazines talk about this game for over a year.

This is one of the best PS2 games available. It has a stellar scenario with so many plot twists you will be screaming at your TV. There are 4 different diffuculty settings and enemy AI is awesome. The game has good controls making it fun to play and some of the best graphics on the PS2. There is major action in the game but the main emphasis is on stealth. Rambo tatics will get you killed. With such an idepth story and cool gamepaly there is no reason not to buy this game.

That's right ! The long awaited Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty has finally shipped to the U.S., arriving as one of the best PS2 games of all time. First off, let me give you a lowdown on what this game is like. The action is totally intense and so incredible, the Matrix can't touch this type of action. And plus there's finally some ultra-realism, which means realistic violence that are similar to martial arts movies and mostly military movies. When someone gets shot by the wall, the blood splats on the walls. Amazing, huh ? The graphics are amazing, eye-popping, and jaw-dropping. This type of technology really takes advantage of the power of the PlayStation 2. The characters look great, the environments are stunning, and the special effects are just plain excellent. The sound is perfect. Some of the old Metal Gear Solid tracks have been remixed perfectly and it sounds pretty cool. They also thrown in some new background music that sounds like you're in control of an action movie. The voice acting is brilliant. 'Ol Solid Snake's voice hasn't changed one bit, since he first appeared in Metal Gear Solid. Raiden's voice may sound a little weird, but to me, he sounds hardcore, like he's about to kill someone in just a second. And just one big surprise to the voice acting element appeared to my ears. Phil Lamaar, who played as the voice of Samurai Jack (you can also see him in MAD TV), plays as one of the main villains in the game (he's the guy who revives himself, each time he gets shot or killed). The gameplay is intense, and it still remains the same as the original MGS. But there are some new gameplay elements thrown in for your satisfaction. For the first time ever, you can hide under a box, hide behind a locker, point the gun on one of the enemy soldiers back and tell them to freeze, jump down a rail and land silently, rather than just taking the risk of jumping or falling off, and finally, go on a first person view. If you're in need of getting this game, don't listen to those pinheads who say that this game reeks. This game is the best, and it will grace anyones PS2 game collection. If you love pure action, gunfights, bloody violence, and doing sneak attacks on people you don't like, Metal Gear Solid 2 should not be left behind ! Go ahead and buy it ! You'll be proud you did !
This is the best game EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game has it all!!!!! Incredible graphics, superb gameplay, and a very involving story line....there is only one thing wrong with this game...too many cinemas!!! During the lasy part of the game, and some of the first, all you're doing is watching...its more like a movie, actually...but dont let that discourage you...this is the best game you'll ever play! Be sure to buy (or at least rent)it!!!:-)

This was the first game I got with my new PS2 and I have to say that I was completely blown away. The changing angles, the integrated movies and different twist on a shooter game make this one of the best of all time.
I'm still far from done the game, but am enjoying every minute of it. The challenges are mixed and different and the fact that your not trying to just kill everything that moves makes it much more fun!
I can only imagine what the third in this series (if there ever is one) will be like! Buy this game!
Sweet game!

I got Metal Gear Solid for Playstation and I looved it! I couldnt wait for a sequel, and hear it is on Playstion 2! It is an awsome game! The only bad thing is the story line, its not as good as the first games and the end is realy messed up, it could have more of a dramatic ending. But this game still kicks butt. The big improvment from the last one is the graphics, they are amazin, the only game that I think matches them in Madden 2002. I usually dont paly this sort of game, I usually only play and buy sports games, but this game is too good for anyone to misss! This game is tight and i highly recomend it.

I, too, must sound off about the game since no one else is stepping to the plate in it's defense. This is an extremely well-developed game with an attention to detail unsurpassed to date. It is as much a movie as an action/stealth game. The gameplay is much like that of the previous title, with all of the same moves intact and a few new ones thrown in. The introduction of such features as advanced squad-based enemy AI, greater length, bleeding wounds requiring attention, use of lockersto hide bodies and yourself, diving rolls, hanging from ledges, holding-up of enemies for items and collectable dogtags, first person aiming, disguises, etc. just server to put the game fantastically ahead of it's competitors. The story line is heavy-handed at times (you won't watch most of the cutscenes the second time you play through), but enjoyable with it's many plot twists. It did leave me a bit bewildered toward the end, but what good story can be absorbed instantly?
As for the introduction of Raiden: First of all, the fact that much of the story is told from the viewpoint of a character who's name is not that of the greatest video game soldier ever, does not alone warrant such condemnation (by the way, thanks for blowing one of the biggest surprises in video gaming history). I can see how people would be upset if expecting to play an MGS-style game and getting something like Lemmings instead, but Raiden is virtually identical in gameplay to Snake, and that's what really sets this game apart from other action titles (other than the convoluted plot and cutting edge graphics). Secondly, one of the major themes in the story deals with passing on a legacy to the future, like a father to son. This puts a whole different spin on Snake and Raiden's relationship and underscores the fact that Hideo Kojima is planning to leave the Metal Gear series to work on other projects. Finally, Hideo contends that the Snake is the central character, and the story is simply told from another's perspective (like Watson and Holmes). The plot would have been depressingly straight-forward had it been played through Snake's eyes, since Raiden was thrust into the situation without full knowledge of the facts. While it could have been rewritten from Snake's view to provide the same type of revelations, I feel the story line was much more interesting with the periodic "Snake ex machina" moments. Anyway, this is not the forum to debate this issue, but it needed to be addressed in light of other reviews.
Bottom line: the game is the best-developed, strongest action title so far, and the only detractors from it's dominance over the industry are those die-hard Snake lovers who feel betrayed by a very effective plot twist. MGS2 takes gaming to a new level and is tied to the past, but not limited by it. Those who do not play this game will miss out on a landmark title in any light.
Not playing this game is a mortal sin!

...MGS2 is so incredibly, well, incredible, that I had my copy of this game pre-ordered before I even had my PS2! Don't believe all of the [bad] reviews out there, they don't like the game because their brains don't have the capacity to enjoy a really great title. If you're going to purchase a good game anytime soon, make it MGS2:SoL.
This title lives up to all of the hype, as you return as retired FOXHOUND Agent, Solid Snake. The graphics, gameplay, voice acting, character models, character voice synching, and anything else that you can think of are utterly superb.
What really got me hooked to this game was the enemy Artificial Intelligence. If enemies hear you, they investigate the noise. If enemies see you, they run away, fire a few rounds, and call for back-up via their hand radios. To answer your question, no it's not that easy to run away! If an enemy sees you, and you run into another room, a special search-and-destroy team will be called to perform a clearing. During a clearing, guards search everything, EVERYTHING! They look in air ducts, overturn boxes, and shine their flashlights into locker vents. Yes, dieing is very easy in this game, but this is a stealth game afterall.
The cinematics are breathtaking, but unnecessarily long at points. As are the CODEC conversations (CODEC is a two-way radio used for character interaction). But despite that, the game is a must-own classic. Another feature that I loved was the control scheme. Every button is well placed, and makes for good gameplay...if you want if to enjoy a great game, with a great storyline might I add, then listen to me. The is a very well-rounded video game, although you may not completely understand the plot line if you haven't played Metal Gear Solid. Enjoy this game just as I have, and let's put MGS2 on Sony's Greatest Hits list, please!
Must-Buy

MGS2 is a must buy for all Action/Adventure lovers. The game keeps and incredible story and keeps throwing in some twists when you least accept it. The graphics are incredible. The gameplay will keep your hands glued to the controller. You can hold an enemy up and make him drop his items. If you step on water then walk on a clean floor, enemies will notice footprints...Can it get anymore realistic!? The first tim through the game you might take 11-14 hours but after playing once you get a clear code to enter at a website. The second time you can run through the game in under 5 hours (if you skip FMV's). MGS2 is worth the $50.
