WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! READ WITH CAUTION! I am a huge Metal Gear fan and a fan of stealth games in particular. MGS2:SOL has been anticipated by gamers and fans alike as the first MGS was one of the best action/stealth/adventure games on the original PlayStation. First off, the graphics and environments are absolutley astonishing. You'd have to awfully hard-pressed not to be in awe with how beautiful this game looks. Character models are highly detailed, right down to the emotion of their faces and how they react to different situations. Weapons are also very detailed and are very accurate to their real-life counterparts. Explosions, rain effects, water effects, anything we take for granted in real life looks amazing on here. Voice acting is superb as David Hayter once again returns as the voice of Solid Snake. The other voice actors are also very good. Music is easily the best the series or any game could possibly have. Composed by Harry Gregson-Williams of The Rock and Armageddon fame, is a treat for the ears. Especially the title sequence and opening movie, the music shines. End credits also feature a pretty good song, althought to me, it sounds a little like a Bond song in a way. Controls are simple yet complex. Most of the controls consist of pressure sensitive. For example, while aiming your pistol, pressing Square fires, but let go of Square lightly, you'll holster your gun. Also when you aquire a machine gun, pushing Square in fires, but hold it lightly and you'll be able to aim. The list goes on and on. The level of level interaction is also incredible. Shoot out a light, and the pieces of the bulb fall to the ground. Shoot a pipe and steam comes out. Also, depending on where you shoot a guard, he also reacts realistically. The story, while confusing and will require you to take a course in politics and the like, is great as always. Now, with all the praise I'm lavishing on this, I did have a few minor but one major complaint. One is the confusing part of the story, Codec transmissions cut in every time and could have been done in real time instead of talking heads, and Raiden. While I didn't really care if he was in the game, what annoyed me is that he took over a good portion of the game and that you practically have to hold his hand to do anything. The idea that Hideo Kojima had for Raiden sounded good on paper, but he's just a pretty boy and nothing else. Thankfully, on MSG3:Snake Eater( which i plan to get), you get to play as Snake(albeit Big Boss with a Snake codename). Also, the bosses weren't quite as good as the ones on the first Metal Gear Solid. Solidus Snake is cool, but I really didn't care much for Vamp, Fatman, or Fortune(although Fatman's pretty funny) and the thing involving Liquid Snake in Revolver Ocelot's arm is pretty ludicrous. But overall, its still a awesome game and once you get over having to play as Raiden, it's still offers great stealth action and loads of interacting with the backgrounds. I give it my highest recommendation. A 5 out of 5.
P.S.
For those of you that do like my reviews, I plan to get Snake Eater in the coming month, so watch for it then. In the meanwhile, check out my other reviews.
Semper Fi, Carry On!

i played and worshipped the demo of this game right into the ground. i was in awe of all the pictures in the magazines, and when i picked this game up and started playing it, i about wet myself. the beginning is excellent. solid, perfect gameplay. snake is a badass and everyone knows it, even he does. ocelot is still a jerk, but a cool one. the beginning cinema blew my socks off and i couldn't get enough of it. eventually i ended up getting in a scuffle through a cutscene showing the new metal gear "rex" tearing the whole tanker i was on apart. then it screeches and dives into the water. but what about me? am i dead?
then there's the rest of the game, and the worst secret in the history of gaming unveiled.
as the next cutscene unveils, i can't wait to see what my good buddy snake is up to now. now he's supposed to go kick some metal gear ass, right? well, some of that is correct, all except the part where i get to do it all as Solid [...]. no, the game sticks me with a [...]named Raiden. maybe, just maybe, if Raiden didn't have those girly golden locks, then maybe he wouldn't be so bad. but he does have the girly golden locks, and i [...]. soon after taking control of him i find the quickest way to kill myself, hoping that maybe this is just some joke Kojima pulled an when i die i get to be snake again. but no, i'm stuff with the barbie/ken combo named Jack/Raiden. oh well, so i proceed in playing with him. soon after, i get hints that mr. snake is on board, and i hope he's come to kill my [...]. nope, he's doing the other badass thing and sneaking around whilst killing gaurds.
off the subject on how much i hate Raiden, the gameplay is great. the graphics are excellent and the action is awesome. the new enemy characters are cool, if somewhat reminiscent of past bosses. but in the end you find out why. the story is a little, or maybe very much convoluted and relies heavily on politics. this doesn't entertain me nearly as much as infiltrating Shadow Moses island and chasing Liquid Snake around, but it's not bad. sometimes i got lost, and never really found again, but i didn't care. overall, the game is nearly perfect. except for the strange plot and stupid main character Raiden, it's great. Snake does end up saving things in the end, sort of, so that helped out a bit. i liked getting the sword at the end of the game, it made me feel like the Ninja from the first game for psone, Gray Fox. and i could deflect bullets, too. and eventually i could unlock stealth mode and i didn't have to look at raiden anymore, which was a big plus.
after the tanker with snake, you spend the rest of the game exploring the "Big Shell" in the middle of the ocean. the overall look can get a little boring at times, seeing as everything has the same backgound. but it's not enough to take away from the game. the bosses are neat, but they are never really a challenge. the game isn't all that long, like the first one, and a second run through would only take a couple of hours. my first time through this game with no help whatsoever, took just a hair over nine hours. i was impressed with the overall package, but i still can't stand Raiden. i'm sorry that i bring up how much i hate him so often, but if you are like me and think Solid Snake is the coolest guy around, then you will feel the same way. if not, then sorry for being repetitive.
so all in all, a great game, even if you can't follow the plot. the gameplay is water-tight and the characters (except raiden) kick ass. so buy it if you're a metal gear fan, but get ready to hate a certain blonde guy real soon.

First let me start by saying that this is the worst of the three Metal Gear Solid games. While many have said they thought the plot was excellent, I thought that too many things were left unexplained, even with the fact that there was going to be a third game. While the gameplay is more fun than the original and the guards are much more intelligent, it still can't best Metal Gear Solid or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Personally I also thought the characters were better in the original. I prefer FOXHOUND to the new terrorist group myself. Anyway, this is still an excellent game, and well worth owning, but if you want to play a better Metal Gear Solid game, with Sons Of Liberty's gameplay, I suggest you buy Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for Game Cube.
This is one of the best Ps2 games of all time

Many people while they may say this game doesn't stack up to the other games in its series, I think differently. When being skeptical about this experience, there's not much you can point
out that's really negative. However, the main reason people didn't enjoy this as much as the others was because of the young, blonde-haired, kid, Raiden.
Actually, I find that once you get used to change, it really doesn't matter that much, in order to introduce Raiden, a brand new character, you wouldn't have the slightest clue about his past existance and Raiden's style of motion and techniques resemble almost identical to Snake's, other than the awkward cartwheel that Raiden does. But then again, it's just my own opinion.
The storyline is without a doubt some of the best I've ever seen. Not only does it provide a strong emotional dialogue, but it has an odd and unique twist of an ending, especially if you wait after the credits.
One of the main aspects that can't be arguemental, is that the graphics are richly stunning, filled with great architecture, colors, and facial expressions. Graphics like that can still compare closely to Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater.
The sound is not any different, having voice overs that sound greatly accurate to their roles and music that either raises action or a calm and gentle tune.
Gameplay factors are still very good, exactley the same as any other Metal Gear game in the franchise, but still very well-done.
The only thing I believe that will never change is the long cinematics. So much of the time it'll be just like watching a movie, with not a lot of game time. You may have played the 1st or 3rd games, but this has the cinematics with the most length.
Once you realize that after playing for a bit, you'll know this isn't a game to play with 5 of your friends, and since it gives off a serious mood to it, overall, the fun factor won't be at it's highest. The gameplay itself gets repetitive very quick even though you get a sword, there are some funny things you can do,(such as: get a guard to pee on Raiden's head over the building, kiss a poster, toss a magazine on the floor so the guard will stare at it) it gets old and playing it again really isn't worth the replay value.
Overall, it deserves a well earned, 5 out of 5 stars.
An instant classic despite it's flaws.

If you like action games you should shell out the relative pocket change to buy this title. Warning: it is a game that revolves around stealth just in case that turns you off.
My synopsis: Playing as both Solid Snake and also a rookie named Raiden, you infiltrate a terrorist operation to prevent the use of Metal Gear to cause mass destruction. Most of the game is spent using Raiden who is caught up in layer upon layer of intrigue as he fulfills his mission. The plot twists and turns as you discover who truly are your friends and who are your enemies.
Graphics 5/5:
The environments you play in are very simple metallic military type settings. This isn't pushing the PS2 to new levels or anything, but it's really not necessary considering the subject. The characters are rendered beautifully though. I was extremely impressed with how lifelike and expressive the characters could be. The animation is strong and fluid.
Play control 4/5: Why no 5? Let me preface this by saying that overall the play control on this game is superior to most games in responsiveness, environmental manipulation, variety of movement, and controller layout. I mean this is a game where you can be looking though a first person view to aim, and if you need to you can stand on tippy toes to see over something! Where if travelling a catwalk and an enemy is going to spot you, you can quickly flip over the side and cling to the edge while they pass by. You can kneel, crawl, swim, dodge, grapple, strike, and hand-over hand. Evasive controls are easily activated and directed (a major flaw in many games).
What the game may lack in environmental detail it makes up for in personality details. Your radio allows you to maintain communication with multiple characters during play, and depending on an action you are carrying out at that moment, their dialogue will be appropriate. The programmers have hidden lots of potential dialogue within the game depending on what you manage to do in a given situation, adding to the replay value.
The environment is destructible within limits. Walls and most furniture cannot be destroyed making explosive weapons largely useless, noisy, and...well..useless. But doors can be opend or broken off. Crates and barrels can be destroyed, Seagulls can be shot at, and bugs can be toyed with too.
I'd give the play control a 5 but there were some flaws for example when trying to press up againt a wall and you attempt peer around a corner, in certain areas the camera switches to a completely disorienting angle just before you reach the corner and the direction you were pressing on the controller to set up your look-around gets completely interrupted by the change and you find yourself trying to figure out which way to press. The camera is fixed so sometimes during abrupt camera changes, you find yourself completely exposed by the disorientation which can quickly end your game. (You really don't want to be seen)
Sound: 4/5:
The music is forgettable, which is good because I hate when music takes your attention away from the game. Ultimately in a game like this you don't want to notice the music. It does enhance the mood when you are in a tight situation or you've been spotted.
The voiceover work is good but not fantastic. Anything that comes off as cheesy is more an issue of scripting though, the voice actors did fine.
Plot 4/5: Some players of this game will say "what?!?!" at my rating, but hear me out. Though the story has intriguing moments and revelations that cause you to want to see what happens next, there are far too many interruptions with story dialogue that just doesn't belong there. The dialogue that doubles as tutorial is fine. But the odd interruption of radio dialogue where you are in the middle of breaking people's necks and your @#$%ing girlfriend wants to reminisce about the day you first met is just plain stupid. Or the 5 minute long discussion with a character about how he feels he went wrong with a former pupil. In fact, there's way too much emoting in this game considering you're supposed to be a trained killer silently executing vicious terrorists. Am I right or am I wrong? Atleast you can skip just about every conversation. The problem is that you may miss a key plot point if you do that. Also, it really get's old when a character says something to you and then your character's response is either "What?" or "I will now repeat exactly what you just said in the form of a question". It's like he's some half deaf moron. Hopefully in the sequels to this game the writing will be tighter.
Ultimately I consider this game a must-buy. But considering how popular it is, you probably already know that. Heck you probably already have it and are just reading this review because you're at work and are as bored as I am. Well, if not, buy the game. It's really awesome.

I love MGS2,Its the game that got me into the Metal Gear series after I bought it out of pure curiosity last year,It was very cheap,it was only 5 pounds(English money,I live in the UK) new.
It took me about 3 days to get used to everything, like pressing "O" rather than "X" to select something, the wonky camera amd the controls. But after this I was absolutely HOOKED on MGS2,I ended up staying in the house for weeks replaying MGS2 finishing the game dozens of times,or just screwing around with the gaurds, looking for "easter eggs" and finding out interesting stuff using the directional microphone(Emma meets Johnny the diahorrea-infected guard and other comical convo`s,lol).
MGS2 has a very complex but non-confusing story,fun gameplay,exiting cutscenes.The graphics are....JAW DROPPING!
The only dissapointment about this game was that its too easy and the fact that I didn`t get the chance to play Solid Snake for very long before passing onto Raiden(unlike others I don`t actually have a big problem with him,But Solid Snake is TONS better).
You should play MGS2 yourself to find out anything interesting, but I`ll just give you the overview:
MGS2 is devided into two parts:"Tanker" chapter which takes place in 2007 in which you play Solid Snake infiltrating a U.S. Marine Corps tanker in order to take photographs of Metal Gear RAY and send them to the media in order for Metal Gear RAY to be exposed to the government and be requested to have RAY destroyed.
Then theres the "Big Shell" or "Plant" chapter which takes place in 2009 and you play Raiden a new and freash soldier who has just passed some VR tests.he has been ordered to infilrate the plant in order to disarm the terrorists, and resque the presidnet and other hostages.
MGS2 is a great game as I just said,But I think MGS3 is even better because its got more exiting combat and a more dramatic storyline.MGS1 is a great game its just as good as MGS2 in my opinion but with better boss fights and you get Solid Snake for the WHOLE game rather than 20% of it.
MGS4 is sure to be a GREAT game and by the looks of it,a more intense storyline with Solid Snake suffering from advanced againg.MGS4 will be coming out for PS3 in the middle of 2007.
As for PSP,MGS:Portable Ops or MPO is coming out and you play as Big Boss again like you did in MGS3,it takes place six years afterwards and explains how he established FOXHOUND.
Ever since i`ve been playing Metal Gear Solid games,I`ve also tried other stealth action games like Splinter Cell, which was OK but I prefer MGS over it,then Hitman which is good but not the same sort of stealth game as MGS.
But theres this new stealth action game coming out for PS3 and XBOX 360 called "Cipher Complex" which looks a lot like MGS,I hope its the same sort of action,so I`m very pumped about that also, hopefully it will be as good as MGS.
anyways bye
Disappointed

Well i have to say that playing another "japanese character with blonde hair" really (...).I partly bought this game because i wanted to play the extremely cool Solid Snake. Instead you play this (...) character.
The graphics and game play though was 100x better than the original metal gear solid.... for the first 3/4 of the game. You can tell as you get to the end of the game that they rushed the production of the game. By the end of the game, you're basically just walking on a straight path and killing people on the side. They tried to make a twist to the story but i think Hideyoshi went overboard on this one.
THE LAST 1/4 OF THE GAME IS BASICALLY A GUY WALKING AROUND NEW YORK CITY WITH A HANDICAM. I would honestly say that the first MGS was 10x better in terms of game play than this one. But if your just into the graphics this one kicks (...), but i would wait for the price to go down to 20 bucks. Sorry!
Two words can describe how I feel about MGS2.....

BIG disappointment! Yes it does deliver a very realistic experience... sort of. In most games you can shoot at an object with a bazooka, and miraculously nothing is damaged, such is not the case with MGS2. You get to interact with lots of stuff, you can shoot at windows and they break, pick off napkin holders with your gun, and that's great... BUT, this game IS NOT FUN!!! Talk about boring, you take three steps and then a 20 minute movie plays the game for you, yaaaawn. And how about that last movie, it was so long that I fell asleep! Good graphics and the interaction with the objects and people cannot save this game from being too easy, too boring, and unable to live up to the hype that built up my expectations only to be let down. Rent it, you'll beat it two days before it's due back at the video store.
A great movie!

I am sorry, I was very disappointed in this game. It makes a great movie, but there was simply way too many cut scenes, and way too little game play. I didn't buy the game to simply watch a movie. That is lame (although the cut scene graphics were good). It needs about 2-3x the game play and this could have been decent...
