one of the best on the PS2

After playing Metal Gear Solid for the PSX, I had very high hopes for the sequel. It took me a while to get the PS2, but when I finally got the system one of the first games I bought was Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. I popped the game in my PS2 and was blown away by the graphics. While games like Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts may be more visually pleasing with vibrant colors, Metal Gear Solid 2 goes for realism. The characters, Solid Snake or one of the enemy soldiers, look and move realistically. There is no difference between the graphics in a cut scene as compared to when you are controlling Snake yourself. Everything looks beautiful, even if it is in a dark, gloomy atmosphere. The controls in this game are tight and even better than Metal Gear Solid (PSX). If the first game had the controls of this one, it might have been the best game ever (as it stands, it is one of the best games I have ever played).

As fun as the Metal Gear games are to play, everything is driven by the story (and this is what makes the games so interesting to play, finding out what happens next). While the story of the first Metal Gear Solid was fairly complex and far reaching, everything was presented in such a plausible way that I didn't really question the possibility what was going on. I just accepted it as the story. In this sequel, some things just weren't very plausible, even for the MGS world. I won't spoil the story, if there is anybody reading this review that has not yet played the game.

On other thing is notable about this game. The game is broken up into two chapters. The first chapter is called the "Tanker" chapter and you play as Solid Snake (the hero of the previous three Metal Gear games). The second chapter takes up most of the game play and is the "Shell" chapter. In this second chapter, you play as Raiden, a rookie to the Foxhound unit (the unit which Solid Snake was a rookie in the very first Metal Gear for the NES). Raiden is experience in VR Training, but has never actually been on a mission. At first, I was very unhappy with this change from using Solid Snake (as a long time player of the series, I have come to associate Snake with Metal Gear) as a playable character to this kid. As the game went on, it made more sense in the story to be using Raiden. I would still have preferred to use Solid Snake, but the inclusion of Raiden is not as offensive as it once was.

Overall, this was an excellent game. I have to knock the game down one star because of the convoluted story (and a little bit because of Raiden). Without question Metal Gear Solid 2 is near the top of the class for the great games of the Playstation 2. It is a lot of fun, worth playing, and worth owning.

AWESOME!

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is by far one of the coolest games ever invented. On par with titles like Starship Titanic, and Grand Theft Auto 3, it captures not only the cool storyline of the Metal Gear Solid series. If you think you can find a more awesome stealth/ infiltration game, I challenge you to a duel. Really...

Who cares if you don't get enough Solid Snake time? Who cares that you must play as Raiden, a first class honkey. Who cares that the story line is more twisted than Micheal Jackson? Not me. All you Tom Clancy Splinter Cell fanboys out there: SHUT UP! This is the definitive stealth game. This Hideo Kojima masterpiece is loaded with an enthralling story, charismatic characters, addicting and supremely fun gameplay, and great graphics. Oh, the graphics. These are not Splinter Cell's amazing graphics per say, but these graphics have a cool, subtle, pseudo-anime type feel. Listen, if you want to plod around in a place you can't pronounce, acting like an old lamer saving the world from an even older lamer, by all means, buy Splinter Cell. But if your in for a badass(and a honkey, who is still cooler than Sam Fisher)saving the world from nuclear destruction buy this game NOW!

I loved the first Metal Gear Solid game and I was eagerly waiting for this game. This game had so much hype to live up to and it did. The best part about this game is the storyline. I was able to pick up on the story as soon as I played the game. When I beat the game I was eager to go back and unlock all of the unlockable items. This game lived up to the hype generated by the first game, and I believe it is even a lot better. You return as the hero from Shadow Moses Solid Snake. Part way through the game you switch to the young and unexperienced Raiden I was a little uncomfortable with the switch at first but now I love playing as both characters. This game gets my highest reccomendations.

Out of all the games I have played in my life this is my favorite. The use of movie style cutscenes and stealth gameplay help to created a amazing and addictive game. Well lets get down to it there are two parts to the game the Tanker chapter you play as Snake and the Plant chapter you play as Raiden, a new character for the Metal Gear series who has all the same moves as Snake. The game does have some new features for your character such as first person view shooting, rolling, hiding in lockers, using disquises, and the jump out shot which is a very cool and unique feature for the game. While you have some new tricks up you sleeve so does the enemy, the enemy can now call in renforcements when they spot you the attack teams will use shilds flips kicks or whatever means necessary to take you down. The enemies are actually quite smart if they spot a dead guard or a blood stain they will call in reinforcements to search the area so its best to hide the body in a locker or something, aside from this the enemies know when they are being shot at and during gunfights they take cover effectively. The graphics for this game are amazing, in my opinion this game has the best graphics than any other PS2 game. There is also some new weapons to the arsenal, some weapons from the original Metal Gear like the SOCOM pistol and the NIKITA Missle launcher you may reconize but there are new weapons like a greande launcher, the USP pistol and a M4 and a Aks-74u. hile the game has a load of cutscenes they are essential for telling the story most you can skip but the first time you play the game you will want to watch them the second time you can skip through all of them. If you are a first time PS2 buyer or just never played the Metal Gear Solid saga I highly reccomend you get a copy of this game, trust me you wont regret it.

Amazing!

I don't understand what everyone complains about. It is perfect. Those who say that the stiry is too complex, should have stayed in school, because not only is it a very intersting story, but it is not a story that one should become baffled by. Also those who don't like the movies are crazy. These movies yes are long, but are absolutely stunning. Really they aren't "vital" to the story, but yes they help. I would rather watch these outstanding movies than watch real movies, they are that darn good. I had no trouble with the controls, or camera angles. I believe that the people who review this game and disliked it were looking for a shoot-them up mindless game. MGS2 is , key word, STEALTH game. the more people you have to kill in this game the worse your score will be. And instead of sitting around all day and killing waves of brain dead enemies like in other games, MGS takes stratagey.

This is my all time favorite game and if u played it i bet that it would be your favorite 2. There is so much stuff u can do in this game u can hide in boxes u can shoot guards and hide there bodys in lockers u can even throw there bodys off the ship u can also distract the guards by putting adult magazines on the floor to distract them. The game has the best story line ever i love this game how can u hate it if u played it. If i could rate this game higher i would.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - My Review

When I bought my PlayStation in late December of 1999, FINAL FANTASY VII and METAL GEAR SOLID were my first games for it. I played through MGS first, and found it to be an amazing experience. It had everything that I looked for in a game - great graphics, a brilliant story, fun game play, and a sense of humor not very different from my own. Even after completion the game continued to have a profound effect on me - it changed the way I looked at video games from then on. Nothing could compare. When rumors of a sequel started to spread, I began to get very excited.

Up until November of 2001, I wasn't really hard pressed to go out and buy a PlayStation 2. I had a PlayStation with a ton of great games, so as far as I was concerned I was set. Everything that I had read about Sony's next generation machine, while impressive, wasn't really enough to motivate me to purchase one. All of that changed one Sunday morning as I was flipping through the advertisements that come packed in with the newspaper. I got to Best Buy (or Circuit City. I can't remember), where something caught my eye: METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY was being released the following Wednesday.

Tuesday night I went out and bought a PlayStation 2. For my birthday two weeks later I got METAL GEAR SOLID 2, and the rest is history.

In my eyes, the game is an improvement over its predecessor in almost every conceivable way. The most obvious of these ways it's the graphics. This game is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, one of the best looking games on any of the "next generation" gaming systems. Textures couldn't be smoother, character movement is great, and cut scenes (that use in game graphics, no less) are just brilliant. The lighting could be a bit better, but that is just a minor complaint.

Gameplay is better this time around, as hard as that is to believe. I honestly didn't think that Konami would be able to improve very much over the brilliance of METAL GEAR SOLID, but they did it. Besides a variety of new weapons, additions include a new first person view mode for shooting and the ability to dispose of guards by putting them into lockers or throwing them off of ledges. Environments have also become weapons, as you can now shoot out various steam pipes or fire extinguishers that hang on walls to disable enemies.

Missions are insanely varied, requiring you to do things like rescue or accompany hostages, clear a bridge of all explosives before you cross, or find specific items, among other objectives. As always, stealth is recommended but not required. Just like the first game, boss battles are consistently fun and challenging.

As is to be expected from a METAL GEAR SOLID game, the voice acting is superb. Everyone here is perfectly cast, most notably David Hayter Cam Clarke as Solid Snake and Liquid Snake, respectively.

Even after you beat the game, there is enough little things here to keep you coming back. The ability to collect dog tags from fallen guards is addicting and will have you playing the game over and over in an attempt to get them all. There is an entire 150+ page book written by one of the survivors of the first game, as well as a detailed summary of the events of every METAL GEAR game to date.

Unfortunately, the only area this game suffers in is its story. Many reviews that I have read since the game's release complain the most about not being able to play as Solid Snake for the entire time. Instead of the hero from the first game, you switch over to a character called Raiden not half way through and finish out the game with him. From IMDb.com:

In order to cover up the character Raiden, the promotional trailers for the game showed several scenes with Solid Snake in different scenes. In the final game, Raiden is involved in the same scenes, but in Snake's place. Hideo Kojima used computer tricks to cover up Raiden and no one knew of his existence until the game was released.

METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY was hyped up by fans of the first to no end, and being forced to play as Raiden caught everyone very much off guard. Many people had looked forward to playing as Snake again and refused to give Raiden a chance. Personally, I didn't see a problem with this part of the story. Sure, it was certainly different, but I actually liked being able to take a look at Solid Snake through someone else's eyes other than his own. It added a whole new layer of depth to the experience.

The problem that I have with the story actually doesn't come up until the very end. Here, things just get overly confusing and unnecessary. The Colonel that has been aiding you the entire time is revealed to be nothing more than a computer program, and the events of the second half of this game are revealed to be nothing more than a recreation of the events of the first. Without going into to much detail to avoid spoilers, the very end quickly became too much. It put a negative cap on an otherwise great storyline. Thankfully, a little teaser after the credits helps to redeem things a bit.

Despite having some minor shortcomings, METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY is an amazing experience that simply cannot be missed. It should be required playing for all owners of a Sony PlayStation 2. This, quite simply, is a video game done right. Not only is it a great game but it shows off just what the PS2 can achieve technically. All games should be this fun.
