First off, this game is great! If you have a PS2 buy this game! However, if you are one of those stupidheads (that is THE nicest way top put it) who are getting an Xbox or a Gamecube, this game is coming out for those systems as well. This game will most certainly be better on those systems, but if you have a Playstaton 2 this is the game to buy. Why go out and get a new system and wait for months for a few better features, when you already have a great system. To sum up this reivew MGS2 IS THE BEST GAME, no matter what system it is on.
Simply Amazing

I haven't played the full game yet but my review is based on what I think of the demo, movies, screenshots etc.
Graphics- 12/10- Yep thats right, the graphics are just incredible, playing the demo I didn't see one single glitch in the graphics. Rain looks amazing and you can see it boucing off Snakes jacket! after shooting a tranquilizer dart at an enemy, put on your scope and zoom into the dart and you can actually CLEARY see words written on the dart!! MGS2 really shows the power of the PS2
Gameplay- 10/10- Not to hard to learn everything and the controls are set up perfectly making everything easy accesible.
Sound- ??/10- In the demo, charactor voices were still in Japenese, I won't be able to give a fair score to sound until I play the full game.
Replay Value-8.5/10- Theres a lot to do in the demo and the final release shouldn't be any differant, I must've played the demo a good 20 times.
This game looks great and I won't be surprised if it becomes known as the best game ever.
One word:PERFECT!

Metal Gear Solid is sure a pure gem but It has a few flaws.
Lets get started shall we.
Now first of all. WHAT THE HELL IS RAIDEN DOING HERE. Alot of people had a problem with Raiden being in it. I'm not...I mean it's Metal Gear Solid For crying out loud! Metal Gear Ray is awesome. Not as good as Rex though....The plot was a little confusing at times and I was annoyed by the Kodec...ON AND ON...JEEZ when does Raidens Girlfriend NOT call.
Lets start shall we
Graphics....5/5
The graphics are great. Very welldone. The Enivermont desighn is fantastic. Great job...
Gameplay....4/5
TO MANY CUT SCENES!!! MGS 1 HAD MORE GAMEPLAY THEN THIS!
And this game is wayyyy to short...Takes about 5 hours to beat..It took me about 4 hours and 34 minutes..But I skipped most of the cutsences....And I hated the way the ending was...I would have liked it more if it was Snake Vs Ocelot in a metal Gear ray boss battle...More better from my opinion then Raiden Vs Abunch of Metal Gear Rays.
Sound...5/5
Superb..Music is great..
Overall Mgs2 doesn't quiet Match up to the Original MGS which Alot of people think is the Greatest Adventure game ever made...I think so to.
If the question...Is MGS worth buying the answer is..YES.
This game is still a classic and one of PS2's Stronger points.
Not as good as PSX's original Metal Gear solid but one step below. But MGS3 will be the best MGS ever!
So go out and buy this game if you really like MGS and don't be turned off by the game just Cause Raiden takes the place of the Legendary Snake who happens to be in the game for about 45 to 50 minutes...Still it's a great game...Haven't played Substance and don't on planning it either...
Overall it's a great game
Later....
If you like Solid Snake don't play this game.

Ok,first of all the graphics rock.Other than that the game sucks. Wow,you play as the main character through out the entire series for about an hour then play as a stupid lame character named Raiden. That makes me soooo mad. Solid Snake is known for this game and is on the cover, but he's hardly in it. Oh ya, the story is crapy too. All this nonsense about the Patriots is boring and almost made me fall asleep in the cut-scenes. You find out the Colonel is like a freaking robot type thing so this question enters my mind. Who was Meryl? Was she a robot too? She was his daughter. I don't have a big enough vocabulary to describe how bad this game is. Don't buy if you are a fan of the series. It takes away everything you liked out of the series.
Good game ruined by overwrought story.

Yes, the game is beautiful. The characters handle fairly well, the graphics are excellent, the sound is nice, the bases relatively interesting to explore.
Too bad you only get to play the game in brief, 5-10 minute stints before being unendingly interrupted by A) extraneous, 'lead-me-by-the-hand-because-I'm-stupid' radio transmissions, or B) absurdly long-winded, meandering cinematic interludes. These things do not seem to let up as you get further into the game; if anything, they get progressively more distracting.
It's really more like watching a bad TV show on the SCI-FI network than it is like playing a solid video game. It's gotten to the point where I'm actually surprised if I walk into a new area and do NOT see the screen shift to "widescreen" mode; and each time it does, I sigh and sit back, because I know I'm in for another needless, tiresome "interlude." The running time of some of these interludes is jaw-dropping.
I mean, I know the designers think that their twisty-turny story of military intrigue is really clever and far-out, but if I want cheesy adventure stories I'll buy some pulp sci-fi books. This is a video game. I want to, you know, PLAY. I don't need my girlfriend or commander or whoever else interrupting me every 10 seconds to tell me how to take care of this, or how to do this, or what to do next. I mean, first of all -- I'm like 5 hours into the game. If I didn't understand the basic functions of play control and general technique I wouldn't be this far. It astounds me that this is still going on. The constant explanations and instructions are insulting enough; but what's worse is that they go ON. And ON. And ON. And ON. And ON. Just when you think you've heard the end of it, your character -- a girly little moron, by the way, who likes like he was ripped right out of a Final Fantasy game (Raiden, specifically) -- will ask some utterly idiotic question, or throw a hissy fit about something dumb.
If any designers ever peruse public reviews for any reason whatsoever, PLEASE -- enough with the dumb story! It's just complicated and boring and silly to all but the very lowest on the food chain -- it is the game that's the important thing. And the game itself is really pretty stellar! No joke ... I like it a lot. There's just so little of it. It's a big, dumb movie which -- here and there -- let's YOU play a little bit. But usually only to quickly move you on to the next ever-so-important chunk of ridiculous, overwrought plot. (You know they actually have VAMPIRES in this one? That's right. "Eek, eek!" vampires! How very military espionage!)
In the end, for all the merits of the "game" part of the game, it's difficult to recommend Metal Gear Solid 2. It is way, WAY too in love with its own story. If I want to see a movie I'll rent a video. When I want to play a game, I buy or rent one, and play it. Too often these days I find it hard to distinguish between the two. "Oh, in THIS movie, you push buttons once in a while."
Konami -- the story is just obtrusive, and way, way too complex and long-winded. How about getting back to the business of making video *games.* Eh?
For this reason I would have to say the Metal Gear 1, for the old Nintendo, is still fundamentally the best in the series. The graphics were horrid, the plot was cheesy and minimal, the action unrealistic -- but who cares? At least it was a GAME. A good, challenging one, too.
Why Kojima,? Why!?!

This game has more potential packed into it than any other game that has ever been made. But unfortunately falls short of a being a great game. First off the graphics, the overall look of the game is really nice, but it stops there. The characters are ugly with terrible motion captured animation, poorly designed Bosses and trite uninspired level design. Where are the huge military bases where you sneak around and use all your skill to dodge guards? Apparently not in this game. Gameplay is basically the same as the first Solid title with some new and cool additions but on the other and a frustratingly impossible to aim with first-person mode. Sound is pretty much dead on with a good score to boot. Overall replay value, uh...err..there isn't any. One time through and it's over, 12-15 hours long or rather 7-8, minus those cuts scenes. Going back though to collect all the dog tags does not count for replay. Where are the VR missions? They sure as hell droned on about them in this monstrosity but they are not in this game and would really have upped the value of this game. I had my hopes up for this one but I can only recommend you rent it or wait 2 weeks for people to figure out they did not really care for this game and pick it up used for [amount] less.

Dude, this is a movie, not a game. Beating it takes not even an hour, but watching all the "cut-scenes" takes about 6, probably even a lot more. The end cimena is an hour long. Your supposed to play the end and watch a short movie, not a whole movie. One part in the "game" you watch a 20 min cinema, walk down a two foot long hallway (which takes about 3 seconds to do) and then watch ANOTHER cinema. Half the time I walked away and did other things while the cinema was playing. Also, I never died once. Most games things get a bit tough and I die once or twice. In this it's sad how easy it is. Basically, don't buy this unless you want a movie. If your looking for intense gameplay, buy an [another game]
MORE OF A MOVIE THAN A GAME! BOOOORRRRRRRIIIIING!

i would love to know why this is getting good game reviews. it is much more of a movie than video game. i spent more time hitting the "A" button trying to get through the story line than actual playing. When i did play the game was great but the momentum was constantly destroyed with cut scenes. RENT ONLY! i beat this game in 3 days and i am no expert game. Like i said it is mostly just watching a movie with little game to actually beat. What a horrible new trend video "games" are taking on. Thanks for making Final Fantasy X a sleep fest also. 40%game 60% movies. Booooooo!
This game sucked hard....

Okay. The first game in the MGS series rocked. It is my favorite Psx game. I expected the sequel to be my new favorite...I was wrong. The first 1/4 of the game you are Snake, using the traditional Stealth method to take reconnasince photos. Its fun. A little long, but fun. The ship you are on explodes. Next thing you know...you are playing a different character, named raidan. Raidan is a Phem-bot, with pretty much no emotions, a overly high pitched voice, and a feminine build. The storyline is very shaky, with a flat-out horrible ending. It turns out the whole thing was just a simulation. And liquid, is pretty much just an arm possessing ocelot. LAME! Its a huge waste of time, and does not contribute to the MGS series. If you buy it, I suggest you buy Substance instead, since it comes with this game AND more games. I would play this for informational purposes only, but don't expect to be impressed. Stick to MGS4 for a true sequel (Heres hoping its not as lame as MGS2)
