The only thing less exciting than this game is watching a piece of apple turn brown. Like an old fart Solid Snake lingers, but you cannot play as him. Instead you play with the spandex clad Raiden, a mans whos mask cannot cover his hair. The plot is dull.
However I think everyone should buy this game, but only to smash and then spit on it.
Revolver Ocelots arm seems to twitch everytime he sees Snake. Is there a hidden meaning to this, or is it just that he cant stand his own BO.
Hideo Kojima has lost his marbles

Okay, its as simple as this: this game didnt live up to the HYPE.
It has awesome graphics, music, and gameplay( at least when you can interact) but the STORY is HORRIBLE. That is why I gave this game three stars. I completley agree with the reviewer who talked about what this game COULD have been. Ultimatley, I was disapointed in this game because the story makes no sense and your main character is a complete (...). I am a huge science fiction fan and read novels all the time, yet I had no clue what had happened by the end of the game, and to all those who say they do understand it, pull your head out. Trust me when I say that this game is disapointing. I loved the last MGS and waited patiently for three years for this game to come out-and after I had finished it, I could only wonder what Kojima was thinking. Why Kojima?!? Solid Snake IS MGS! The only reason I continued to play this game was the hope that I would play as Snake again, but it never friggin happens! What happened to Ocelot? Where is Meryl? Probably the point I lost all hope for this game was when I found out who the Cyborg Ninja realy was- Kojima made a total mockery of the ninja, when i discovered his true identity, i laughed and cussed at the screen-its that terrible. So RENT this game b4 you but it.
Bottom Line: Buy Grand Theft Auto 3 instead.
An overrated ten hour movie

I personally think it's time Hideo Kojima started making movies, as that's what he seems to love. His latest project, Metal Gear Solid 2, follows this pattern: the player watches an overlong cinema scene (half-hour sequences are common), and then they play for five or ten minutes before seeing yet another cinema. I don't mind lengthy movie sequences in games as long as they are backed up with enough gameplay. In MGS2, however, the gameplay is little more than an excuse to go from one cinema scene to the next.
And if the designers want to put so many movie sequences in their games, they could at least make a decent story. Unfortunately, MGS2 doesn't even have that. The story's biggest flaw is sheer implausibility. So many insane and ridiculous plot twists occur that by the end of the movie... err, game, I can no longer believe another word of what the characters say. There's the whole issue of Liquid's arm, the Patriots and the S3, plan, and Arsenal Gear, just to name a few. I won't give away anything here, but suffice it to say, the plot is almost unprecedented in its insanity.
As for the gameplay, most people like it, but I didn't. The tranquilizer gun made getting past guards too easy. While we're on the subject of weapons, the game recycles lots of weapons from the last game. Of the few new ones, many are utterly useless, and you never have to use them. Some old weapons have become useless as well. The only notable additions in this department are the aforementioned tranquilizer gun, the coolant spray, the directional microphone, and the sword.
Also, considering how much the game boasts better artificial intelligence, I didn't notice a huge difference. Sure, they're not as moronic as the guards in the previous game, but they're still pretty shortsighted and dumb. I can shoot them with a tranquilizer dart and they'll hardly notice. I can hide in obvious places and they won't look there. I can even hide in a cardboard box and they often won't realize anything. And if this wasn't bad enough, fighting the guards is extremely easy, removing much of the challenge.
And speaking of challenge, why do your superiors on the codec tell you how to do everything, from basic controls to how to get past each obstacle? Do the designers think video game players are so dumb they need constant hand-holding? Teaching new players how to play is one thing, guiding you every step of the way is another.
As for the rest of the game... the graphics are quite excellent, although rather monotonous. I didn't like the music too much, but at least it never was annoying. The voice acting is good, like in the original. The controls and camera are well-done, and there are few technical glitches in the game. However, the game is extremely short. It takes about ten or twelve hours the first time, and far less the second. You can easily complete it in less than four hours, provided you skip the cutscenes. Furthermore, there is no replay value, except for collecting dog tags and taking pictures, which are boring and pointless diversions.
Altogether, I found MGS2 to be a huge disappointment, and an unworthy sequel to one of my favorite videogames. If you really want to, rent it, because you can easily beat it at least once in that time.

I played this after going through TTS(and I played the ps game), and the stupid storyline, weak characters and horrible climax make everything great about this title obsolete. After all of the hyped reviews, the crapiness of the OVERALL package is shocking. This game will be remembered for it's technical beauty, but the wants-to-be-ultra-cool deus ex machina anime storyline is one of the low points of the industry.
So grossly over-rated it's criminal

Metal Gear Solid was arguably one of the best titles for the original PlayStation, and deservedly so. It's compelling (if a bit far-fetched) story and truly memorable boss encounters only enhanced the gripping and truly enjoyable gameplay mechanics.
Metal Gear Solid 2 does take the gameplay aspects of MGS to new levels and obviously delivers crisper, more detailed graphics, but the abysmal plotline and truly weak boss characters ruin what was expected to be a truly brilliant title.
Most games should be evaluated on their gameplay, since that's the reason they exist at all, and if this was the only means of evaluation, then MGS2 would receive high marks. Unfortunately, there is just so LITTLE gameplay here that other considerations must be made when evaluating the title. Imagine this scenario: You guide your character down a hallway (gameplay: 5 seconds) and into a room, where you listen to a 15 min cutscene, after which you guide your character down another hallway (gameplay: 5 seconds) and listen to a 20 minute cutscene. This happens at least twice by my recount (although it could be more, as I have tried to remove the memories of this game from my mind). I wouldn't even mind this if the cutscenes were worthwhile, but the story is SO convoluted that it's virtually impossible to follow, not to mention rather boring when you do decide to listen.
So the story is horrid, and grossly intrusive...still, the gameplay is great and if MGS was any indication, then the boss fights should be memorable. Again, MGS2 falls miserably flat here. Encounter One (2nd act): Fatman...a demolitions expert...on ROLLERBLADES? Honestly, this is just sad. Encounter Two: Fortune...but you don't actually fight her. Nice. Encounter Three and Four: Vamp...a literal vampire. A vampire...in a militaristic stealth-based game. Wha? Honestly, I wouldn't have minded Vamp if he was in the least bit engaging (after all, how can vampires be bad?). Of course he wasn't.
Zone of the Enders came with a demo disc of MGS2. If you want to play the game, grab that demo disc (which, theoretically, is free). Well over 50% of the finished game's playtime is on that disc. If you do need to play MGS2, then rent it. You'll finish it in well under a week (and if you play through a second time, you can easily do it in under 3 hrs by skipping cutscenes).
So if you've made it this far through my rant, you should be asking yourself why it's rated as 2 stars. Well, the demo disc portion of the game is fun and enjoyable, and the graphics are nice. The gameplay aspect of MGS is all there (and more), but the miserably awful plot, inexcusable bosses and overall segmenting of game flow hold back what should have been a great title.
Appendix: I know a lot of people have been bowled over by the hype this game received, but if you look at the title objectively, then you'll see how the cons greatly outweigh the pros. Remember, just ask yourself if you're having fun playing the game. For me, the answer was a definite NO.

About 60% of this game is very good, but unfortunately I paid 100% of the retail price, therefore it failed to deliver my money's worth. The storyline plays like a comic book meant for a 10-year old, but since this game carries a mature rating 10-year olds shouldn't be playing it. How about presenting a storyline worthy of the target audience? Too much time is spent viewing boring cinematic garbage, and some of it can't even be bypassed. 90% of the dialog is worthless junk, but I found myself listening to it, fearing that I'd miss something important. I gave up on the game after fighting with boss Vamp for a while, only because that "boss" battle, like the one with Fatman, was absolutely ridiculous. For all of the reviewers who raved about this game being realistic, please replay one of the boss battles and then tell me how realistic the game is. It's not that I couldn't have beaten Vamp, as I had him nearly dead after blasting him with numerous stinger missiles, but the battle against him was so utterly stupid that I decided to move on to playing SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals, which I assume has no such insanity. Grow up Konami, and realize that your targeted audience for a "mature" game is the adult gaming world and not a bunch of comic book readers. This game was ultimately a big waste of time and very far from realistic.

my main gripe about this game is that you only get to play as solid snake for the first third of the game. for the rest of the game you play as the character raiden, who is horrribly annoying. the plot is too complex for its own good. essentially, this game is a total remake of metal gear solid 1. it has every essential element of 1. that is even one of the main plots: that anyone (raiden) can become a solid snake-like fighter if exposed to all the same conditions as solid snake was. this is just an excuse not to have anything original in the game. you only fight two bosses and they are not as cool as the ones in 1, and the ninja is not even the ninja. it is some russian chick dressed up to look like a ninja to mimic what occurs in the first game. overall, this game [...]. go play the first one. that one is the masterpiece.
could have been way better

This game has potential, but Perfect Dark, Halo, and even Goldeneye are better. This game is boring after a short while. The graphics are good, but its boring(...). The plot is ok, but I WANT ACTION NOT A PLOT(well, i want a plot, but i want action more). I guess it's not a bad game, but I expected so much better. It could have been good, but they got lazy.
A big disappointment :( What happened to MGS?

I gave it a one star because I was a MGS fan, and I am very disappointed about this game. Let me first say I loved Metal gear one. I loved it so much I played it three times. The music, characters, and story were great. I was hooked. I preordered MGS2 like six months ahead of time and I could not wait to get it. After I played the MGS2 for few hours, I was bored with it. What? What did I just say? A MGS fan? I missed Snake, the music, Mei ling, and the original crew. The MGS2 story's lousy. In plain words, it was simply boring. Like I said, I gave it a one star because I was disappointed. I assume if you are a MGS fan you would bought this game already. That is all I have to say about it.
