This game has brains. Unlike your typical "see how many people you can kill" type games, this game makes you stop and think about your actions and the consequences of those actions. It also carries, towards the end of the game, a pretty heavy philosophical message.
If I had to say which game was better....Metal Gear Solid 1 or Metal Gear Solid 2, I'd have to go with Metal Gear Solid 1. The first one was so freshly original and grab you by the throat and never let go fun, that I don't think anything could compare to it. That being said, the 2nd is a worthy follow up and actually clears up a lot of the mysteries in the 1st Metal Gear. The music is Top Notch, The Graphics are Fantastic (eat your heart out Xbox) and the Story line, although confusing at times, is truly cinematic in scope.
Not many games care about the intricate detail that this one does. It is the type of game you could spend months on, just discovering every little nuance of its incredible world. Any game that can cause me to ponder my own existence, is a game worthy of play!!!
You'll get so lost in the story, you'll forget it's a game.

To some gamers, the above statement is a bad thing. Not to me though. I would much rather become ensconced in a good story line than mindless repetitive button pressing. MGS2 is as good as it gets. The game is challenging enough and will definitely be one you'll be replaying several times if not as long as you own a Playstation. There are certain games like N64's 007, Ocarina of Time, and Mario 64 are worth keeping the system forever for. This game is like that for PS2. The story line is so involved, it plays like you're in a novel. And while the plot twists become frustrating while playing, in the end it adds up to one great game experience. This one is a must have.
The game saga that keeps on delivering thrill after thirll

If you had played any of the previous Metal Gear games, then you know what to expect. Also being on the PS2, you can set your expectations rather high. There's just so much to say about this game, so I'll start with the graphics. They're exceptional, and I mean phenomenal. Play control is great too. The plot though is what keeps this series going on and on. The story of espionage, betrayal, twists, and turns aren't even seen in Tom Clancy novels. Going beyond this we find fantastic voice acting. The story comes alive through the spectacular cast. David Hayter as Solid Snake is a match made in heaven. And then there's the music. Directed by Harry Gregson Williams, (who also worked on the soundtrack for "The Rock") the commanding themes blast with suspense, triumph and every other possible emotion. Then there's the game play. Which again is spectacular, there's constant action, but the object is to be discreet. This game makes you think, and if you can't think on your feet, you're dead where you stand. If there's one problem with this game is that there's not enough Solid Snake. Play the game, you'll see what I mean. By no means should this game be missed.

In 2001, the video game world was taken by several games at once. Super Smash Bros Melee dropped on the Gamecube and Halo on the XBOX. On the Playstation 2 games like Final Fantasy X and Devil May Cry were also blowing minds. But there was one game that shattered the competition: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Highly praised for its story and gameplay, Metal Gear Solid 2 still ranks as one of the Playstation 2's finest achievements, along with still having one of the most controversial plot twists in gaming history.
Metal Gear Solid 2 begins two years after the first game. With Snake and Otacon forming the non-profit organization known as Philanthropy. Their mission is to seek out and destroy all Metal Gears. Their objective takes them to the Tanker Discover where they'll expose that the United States has a new Metal Gear prototype. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned when the Tanker is taken over by the likes of Colonial Sergei Gurlukovich and Revolver Ocelot. The Tanker mission doesn't go as planned and the mission turns into a fiasco. The story then fast-forwards to 2009 where a Plant has been built where the Tanker went down, and Solid Snake is presumed dead. This is when gamers were treated to one of Metal Gear Solid 2's best... and most controversial plot twists. Gamers discovered they would not be playing as Snake for the whole game and instead would be taking control of an operative named Raiden. Because of this twists, several gamers began to dislike Metal Gear Solid 2. While players didn't resume the role as Snake, Metal Gear Solid 2 still managed to be a fantastic game.
For one, in terms of going above and beyond its predecessor, Metal Gear Solid gets a gold star. Where as the first one was very basic, the second game was very complex. You could now roll into guards and hold them up and make them drop items. The game also put a lot more emphasis on remaining anonymous. In the original game, guards who were killed disappeared. They didn't in the second game. To keep from being discovered, Snake (or Raiden) would have to hide the body. If a guard walked by and saw an ally down, he'd call for backup, and a search team would then be searching for you. Another fun aspect was being able to hang over ledges and do push ups to increase your grip gauge.
You were now able to go into first person and shoot your enemies to land more precise shots, which is great for boss fights and for ensuring you don't run around blindly.
Another new addition to Metal Gear Solid 2, was the ability to put guards to sleep using a M9 Tranquilizer pistol. This made it possible to go through the entire game without killing a single guard or boss for that matter.
The Metal Gear Solid franchise is known for its amazing boss battles, and the second one was no exception. While there were no mind reading psychos in Metal Gear Solid 2, you found yourself up against some worthy adversaries, and even being forced at one point to take down a harrier jet.
Everything you could do in Metal Gear Solid 2 made for an amazing game. One that could be approached in several different ways. To the point where you replayed it again and again to find different ways to go about certain areas. Top that off with multiple difficulty levels and seven years later, you probably still know someone who plays through Metal Gear Solid 2 to this very day.
Graphically, Metal Gear Solid 2 still stands as quite possibly the best looking and running Playstation 2 game out there, and it came out in 2001. No game on the Playstation 2 gives such meticulous attention to detail. Just in the Tanker alone there's a ton of small things you can do such as destroying bottles of glass one by one, destroying food in the pantry and much more. It also ran at a consistent framerate at all times. If you looked very closely you might see something that looks a little blurry, but you'll have to be very observant for it. The cinematics are also amazing, filled to the brim with such depth and emotion few video games, even in this day, can't touch. They're funny and well written. The music is even more memorable. The score done by Harry Gregson Williams is easily one of the best in the entire series.
Metal Gear Solid 2 isn't entirely perfect. It's a fantastic game filled with some of the greatest plot twists in video game history. However, where it mostly from one gigantic problem. It has a ton of cutscenes. You could play for ten seconds only to be treated to cutscenes that were several minutes long. Some of them becoming tedious or seeming useless. Even worse for the second installment was the number of dialog spoken through the codec through characters that would, at times, be right next to one another (Kojima has stated that he had to do this to fit the game on one disc!). While the story is well written and has some great twists, it becomes a little hard to follow in its final moments. If it weren't for the raw emotion expressed in the cinematics or the humor in some of them, it would've been less exciting. Luckily you can skip them and once you go through the story once, you can easily spend the rest of your time enjoying the gameplay.
Metal Gear Solid 2 was, and still is, an enormous game. One that even by today's standards, most games can't compare to. It's fantastic story and in depth gameplay made it one of the most memorable outings the Playstation 2 has ever undergone.
Dissapointment!

This game was a total disappointment. It starts out good, but then Snake supposedly dies, and you play the role of another operative name riden. Also, at the end of this game, it destroys all of your ideas about Metal Gear Solid-the game that set the story. It tells how colonel was a robot, and most importantly, you really don`t even fight Metal Gear. I would suggest not wasting your money and buying it, but to rent it instead.
Great grpahics, gameplay, sound, etc:... BUT ultimately.....

This game definitely disappoints. I would have given it a higher score, but I wanted to bring the avg down. Main reason for this: YOU ONLY GET TO BE SNAKE FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES.
The back of the box lies. Read the description on the game box. It says the Snake is going to have to save the world. But no....
Then you have to play this long blonde haired, very feminine looking guy for the rest of the game. The proper title for this game should be Metal Gear Raiden.
For all metal gear solid fans for the ps one, do not buy this game. You will be so sick with disappointment, like me, that you wont even bother playing it(mgs2) again. This has made me very sad, metal gear solid 1 was one of the best games ever made. It does not deserve a sequel such as this. This is a sad way to end it.....

Those other players must be non gameing gurus because anyone with have an ounce of wisdom should love this game. It has a great story line and awesome characters. It is realistic and I love that because in other "realistic" games you seem to be able to be shot 4 times and then die, in this game it depends where you are hit and then a certain amount of blood flows out. I have seen people get shot before and blood does not just fling out it drips. this game is just good. I dont think that parents should keep this game from younger viewers and no because they must learn to understand how messed up someparts of the world can be.
the kids who shoot up schools are messed up. If you do not share my belief do not stalk me and try to kill me, you will be messed up to. I think kids should just play and not be worried. I would rather have a kid who is playing video games a lot and staying inside then one who is going out to do bad stuff. In conculsion this game is for people who like spy games and dont want to play "realistic" games where someone can die from getting shot in the foot
THE ONE AND ONLY GAME!!!!!!!

All right people the date is November the 14th 2001, and today was the release of this game in all the nations game stores. I have to tell you this if you have played the demoi then you were thrilled by the graphics, control, and story line that the folks at Konami showed us. The trailer was also amazing and just by seeing it you coulnt wait to get this game. Personally I am a veteran of Metal Gear and I have to tell you that this will be Konami's best work. Sadly this is Mr. Kojimas last Metal Gear meaning that he will not be in charge of future Metal Gears. Well enough with the background, I just have to say that the demo is amazing and I will bet a million dollors that the actual game is to die for. I at the moment bought the whole version of the game and cant wait to play it. Stay posted because when I finish the game I will give the complete review of it. METAL GEAR ROCKS!!!!!!!!
