this game is excellent, i've had it for months and am not even tired of it. their are too many things to do, too many ways to get past.
the AI is unbelivable, leave a bleeding guard without making sure he's dead, and he'll call for backup and say "the bastard's got me, send reinforcments."
some guards are busy listenin to music and their bodies dance to the beat. while the codec communications with your friends are at times hillarious. like when the guy is hiding in the womens bathroom, his girlfriend calls and asks him where he is, and what kind of sick guy would try and hide in a ladies bathroom.
i could go on for days. i certainly don't regret buying this game.

I honestly cannot understand how anyone can give this game a rating of less than 4 stars. It is truly magic. With MGS2, Hideo Kojima took a revolutionary step forward in the video game industry, and the game will be looked at as a benchmark for many others.
Those criticizing the game have two main "reasons." The first focuses on the story, the second on the length of the cutscenes in comparison to gameplay. I'd like to take a little time to analyze these points:
story
- Some say it's unrealistic. I say, "so what?" How many games or classic fiction, for that matter, have "believable plots"? And MGS2's plot, while confusing, is very astute. There are many philosophical ideas observed in the game. What are we really? What governs our actions? Is there free will?
There are many major plot twists in the game, even more than its predecessor, and in much greater degree. Yet they're not "ridiculous" as critics claim. No one will be able to fully understand the plot just going through the game once. Once you begin to understand it, you'll start to appreciate the depth of the story and many questions it bring forth.
There are many interesting sidenotes in the plot as well. Many will note the parallels to the first MGS, and this will be explained as you progress in the game.
While the story doesn't match those of the greatest Hollywood hits, it holds as one of the best ever in a videogame. Many of the confusions caused by it is based on the fact that Kojima tried to put some many different facts together, thereby leaving many things unexplained, leaving the player to ponder. But doesn't that just make the game better? After all, gaming is an interactive experience, and being able to think and discover the deeper meaning of the game's story is very rewarding.
-cutscenes
The first MGS had many cutscenes and codec conversations. MGS2 has more, and rightfully so. MGS had a simple storyline, albeit with a few memorable plot twists. But nonetheless, it was very linear and predictable in most cases. MGS2 is different, and that's why you need the cutscenes, which are as impressive as the greatest Square and Capcom CG's, only rendered in real-time using MGS2's excellent graphics engine.
Codec conversations can get a little long at times, as many complained. I enjoyed the quality voice-acting a lot, but others could have gotten the plot by reading through the text during the codec conversations (by pressing x).
The cutscenes and codec conversations are essential in this game because of its heavy dependence on story. Therefore, while one can easily skip them by pressing x and square, respectively, doing so will ruin his/her ability to enjoy the game the way it was designed.
Finally I would also like to say a few things about playing time. The game has a long gameplay time. One can easily stay in certain areas and have fun exploring the many interesting aspects in the game. I must've spent at least 50 hours on the demo (bundled with ZOE) before the game was released, just toying with the game's impressive AI and interactivity.
The replayability is amazing. Collecting dogtags is not only fun but rewarding, giving you the stealth camo, bandana, and a variety of "wigs" (giving you special abilities) depending on how many you've gathered. And to collect enough dogtags to uncover these items, you must complete the game on various difficulty levels, but the work is well worth it (what's more fun than just walk in the middle of 100 soldiers, knock them out, and not get caught because they can't see you?)
I would like to see anyone complete the entire game in less than 3 hours under normal difficulty (as one reviewer here claimed possible), even after multiple completions of the game. The game is significantly longer than MGS, and even that required around 2-3 hours to complete minimum for most people (after you master it).
Finally, the extreme difficulty of the game is so difficult (but not unfair or impossible) that it offers a great challenge for hardcore gamers.
An impressive and emotive sequel

The first time I played MGS on my old PSX I was blown away by the cheer brilliance of such masterpiece. I had never been interested in any sort of espionage before that. The brilliant mixture of espionage, military data, science-fiction, the supernatural and emotion made of this game a winner and an old time favorite of many gamers. The video game world really had a blow with that one. Needless to say, when MGS2 was announced, skepticism (and hype) among us video game heads began to grow strong.
MGS2:SoL is NOT a game that will suit many of the original game's fans. Even though the original was flooded with tons of cinemas people have the tendency of idealize a past that never was. The game, despite the long CG sequences, has enough gaming time to please any ordinary player. And do not listen to what the say about the long codec calls. They aren't that long. The music is great too; the opening theme is truly emotional and magnificent and the ending theme, although not of the same nature as "The Best is yet to Come" (From MGS) is really good too. It actually reminds me of the ending credits' theme of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The story line is brilliant. Some people complain it is a…..er….never mind that. You'll have to finish the game and decide for yourself whether if the plot stands for itself or not. Personally, I do think it stands. The main idea behind the game is the same as the original MGS: Genetics and our individual destinies, only this time there is more emphasis on the subject, and if you though MGS got emotional at times, prepare for a ride, because this one really gets dewy often. (Although I yet have to see something that beats that last codec conversation between Snake and Naomi at the end of MGS. *sob*) Snake is far more human and light-hearted than before and we really get to know Otacon, je je. All of the main characters have their reasons to be in there, and as the past game, each one has a whole history behind them. At first one might think of Solidus as the next Liquid (Nah!) but after you are done with the game and begin to think about its characters for the following days, you'll realize the kind of character that Solidus is. Some people that I know have complained that Mr. Kojima is nothing but a quasi intellectual for shooting all these moral and metaphysical concepts to us. But let me ask you something: Do you really believe the game would have been accepted by a wide audience had it included complex philosophical problems or the ideas of Nietszche, Plato, Leibnitz, Sartre, and so on? I think we all know the answer.
Last, but not least, this game, unlike the last one, has a wider arrange of supernatural occurrences, something that really seems to bother many gamers. The main difference between Japanese science-fiction and Western science-fiction is that the Japanese are not afraid to express their plot ideas, no matter how ridiculous they might sound, and that is precisely what makes of Japanese fiction something so fantastic. As a skeptic of everything supernatural I know that in order to enjoy good fiction one needs to cast away the ability for disbelief.
A brilliant game that stands at the right side of the original; let us hope a third (Or should I say fifth?) game comes out sometime in the future, for there are many loose knots left on this marvelous story.
Hands on....

Metal gear solid 2 was the first demo cd i got for my playstation 2. I've played it, ordered the complete version, and is anxiously waiting for it to come for me. This game is expected to be number one with a few other games such as smackdown 3. The graphics is good, the detail is astonishing, and the gameplay is quite real. Everything is almost damagable, delicate and smooth. Everything you'll shoot gets broken into pieces such as glass, licker, bottles, boxes of potatoes and more such as light bulbs, doors (maybe) and even lockers. Even fire estinguisher is brakable. This game rocks. So okay, what is it all about? Well, you're solid snake, and your task is to get info about this new metal gear and somehow a group of terrorists went inside the boat you're in killed the innocent men and threw them off the ship. And now, your task gets harder and harder. Also in the game, you'll find a usp gun, m9 tranquilizer, an empty mag, a chaff grenade and a stun grenade you'll find in some areas of the boat. So overall, i think any ps2 owner should buy this game if he or she is into action games or if you're only into sports, DONT BUY IT! It's a nice game and it will make you like it 100%

Reading the reviews for this title it's stunning the amount of general stupidity in the gaming public. The people running around writing one-star reviews are the same people playing the game saying 'I wanna shoot more people' and when there's a cutscence think 'This is boring. Why are they talking so much?' This isn't just a video game. Don't people realize the points and symbolism that are being made? Are they that uneducated? Basically, Metal Gear 2 is phenomonal, and misunderstood by the people that don't agree with that statement. Metal Gear Solid is like a fricking canvas for Hideo Kojima's work. Read the 5-star reviews for what the game is like, and laugh along with me at the ignorance of the people that can't understand why this isn't Grand Theft Auto. Thank you.

Some people would argue saying that Metal gear solid 2 is the game of the year for 2001, I agree due to playing the demo off of zone of the enders. The sequel to playstation hit metal gear solid. The mgs2 continues the story of metal gear solid, if you have played the first one you will know what i am talking about. In the second one you will see returing people such as solid snake and more. This time it is about a new metal gear called metal gear ray which is a flying weapon which can knock out cities at a time. Your mission is to go in and try to destory the metal gear before the government can set it off. In the demo you is seen that you are on a boat and all is going well until the boat is hijacked by the russian army. Why do they want it is unknown the demo ended before it said. But in the final game you will be able to do more than you would in the first one such as a first person view so that way you can shoot down enemies with one shot of a head shot. Also being able to hide in lockers while guards are just standing there with no clue. Being able to throw or shoot a enemy off the ship. This is the most wanted game since Hideo Kojima (the creator of the metal gear series) annouced the game will be on PS2 at E3 of 2000 when he showed the video consumers jaws dropped at the view and it was so great that the graphics showed that it was raining and the raindrops were bouncing off of snakes nose. And through out the E3, people were wanting to know when the game will be released and now he has finally announced a date... Through out the two years we have seen more and more screen shots of the game and so far I am inpressed with the details. The one factor I like about it is that the enemies is a lot smarter than the last game and with the game tougher there are more things to do. So when the game is released we will see if the game is top notch.
