I'll read some books on ZEN.....what gameplay there was is great..however there were far to many cinematic "moments" full of philosophical debates over teh environment etc.....if i wanted that kind of boredom there are better places to find it....
Far out of balance

First off, Hideo Kojima is an underappreciated genius who has raised video games to an art form. No one brings the same level of literary depth to gaming.
That being said, this is an action game that's awfully light on the action. Those who remember the calamity that was Xenogears will be bashing their controller on the floor in frustration as FMV after FMV plays, with occasional interruptions to go look for items. In 10-12 hours of play time, expect 50% to 65% of your time to be spent watching movies and listening to endless Codec conversations.
What action there is ranges between the extremes of far too easy and far too difficult, with nothing in between. The boss battles are trite and over with all too soon. Enemy AI has been kicked up a notch, which makes sneaking harder, and the destructable environments are a plus.
On the whole, though, MGS2 is a game far out of balance. The first MGS walked a confident line between cutscenes and gameplay, earning its reputation as one of the best PS1 games ever created. MGS2 puts too much emphasis on story and not enough on gameplay, destroying this balance.
If you're looing for action with a strong story that doesn't get in the way, pick up this year's other sequel, Silent Hill 2, which is far superior.
Is this is a movie or a game?

Like most sequals, SOL does not live up to the original. This game is more like a mediocre soap opera than a video game. The first part of the game starts off strong, but shortly after "Raiden" is introduced the game takes a turn for the worse. A commando with no real world experience??? To make this goofyness worse his ex-girlfriend is brought in to talk him through the mission??? Of couse all she really wants to do is whine about their relationship! I am not making this up. The poor guy is an inch away from death and she is quizing him about their anneversary date. Then the game really gets sickening. For every five minutes of game play, you have to endure aprox. tweny minutes of dialouge. The animation is poor at best and it ruins the entire game. Some of the speeches go on so long you forget the mission half way through. The game play is average at best and unlike the first one, it is next to impossible to stealth an enemy soilder with a pistol as they are heavily armored. They simply call for help and gang bang you. So you basically have to avoid conflict at all costs to get anywhere in this games. I am shocked that Konami went to market with this game. The entire thing seems uninspired and if I could I would take my game back for a refund. Needless to say I would not recommend this game to anyone.
This Game [Stinks], Not A True Sequel

The reason this game [stinks] is because everyone leads you to think that you play with solid snake through the whole game with is a misconseption, you DO NOT play with him through the entire game. Eventually you come to this turnpoint where you play with this [guy], Raiden. Which in my opinion the game only gets worse from there with the stupid story. Lets just say this game just goes downhill after the tanker mission. P.S.- "the only reason i gave this game a 1 star is because i couldnt give it a zero"
A big dissapointment

This game was fun for maybe 5 minutes. Compared to the original, this game is nothing. The graphics are amazing, I'll give it that, the sound is good too. New features like being able to fire in a crouched and first person mode is better. The problems whit this game are as follows: too short; I beat the game in a total of 7 overall hours. Cut-scenes; their too long! The begginning cut-scene is long, the end is longer, the bigginning of part B is long, the end is so long I wanted to stab myself in the ear with a potato just so I'd have something better to do!!! Also, the conversations on the codex can be excutiatingly (I probably spelled that wrong) stupid and long. Some of that dialogue is worse than the original Resident Evil (remember after you beat the alligator? Christ). I recommend renting this game, it's not worth the hype. The original on PS1 beat this game to a pulp. I hope this helped.
biggest disappointment of the year

I REALLY wanted to love this game. I am finding in my old age, instead of becoming more patient, I am much more interested in instant gradification than this game offers. I only played for about 6 hours which included 5 hours and 45 minutes of a bad storyline and 15 minutes of me figuring out which key was the punch key. I know that the storyline is probably good, I liked where it was headed with the two year jump after the first act, but boss characters who you beat by just hanging around until the next cut scene really could be left out.
I have really fond memories of the original metal gear solid which is why I was so fired up for this one. Even while writing this I think I will give it another chance, but I just can't see spending the time running around accidently stepping on claymores because I didn't have the right sensor up while heading to the next two hour discussion between our John Bon-Jovi hero and his girlfriend.
This game forgot one fundimental rule. It is a game. It isn't the next Gone with the Wind meets Mission Impossible 2. It is a game and should act as such.
These games demand a lot of our time. If it can't be truly fun within the first 20 minutes, it is taking way too long to start. Metal Gear Solid 2 takes 20 minutes before you pick up the controller. That is too long.
If you want a game, go grab SSX Tricky. That one remembered what games are about, and it is truly the system seller for the PS2. If you want a 30 hour spy movie with some cut scenes of you pushing a contoller around for 20 seconds, grab MGS2.
I really wish this game is better than what I state. I really wanted to like it. But it isn't and I don't.
Great game!

Whoever is talking this game down needs to go buy an X-box. If you own a PS2 then this game is a must. Video, graphics; the game has it all. Lots of fun and keeps you in it.
Truly a suberb gaming experience in all aspects.

MGS2 is pure excellence. If you are a fan of MG, and liked MGS1, then you probably already own this great video game masterpiece. To those that have never played the original MGS I suggest you go buy it, it's now a greates hits for PS1. Play through MGS1, get acquainted with it, and then go off and get the sequel "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty." This game is the reason I bought a PS2. The graphics are great, the detail and physics of the game are unmatched, and there are many different things and ways you can go about infiltrating the enemy compound, how you do it is all up to you. If you like action packed movies and great video games, with MGS2 you get the best of both worlds. If you are not already a fan of the series, you will be after playing this game. My advice to those new to the series is to buy both MGS1 and MGS2 because these two are the best games ever produced. If you've ever watched an action packed movie that was so intense that after finished watching it you felt like acting it out, well you can do just that with MGS2. Stop wasting time reading reviews for this game, and go and get it--it will be the best thing you've ever done. Over and out...

I love all three MGS games, but MGS3 is the best and MGS2 and MGS1 parallel each other.
MGS2 is made up of two chapters-the Tanker chapter and the SHELL chapter,in the Tanker you play as Solid Snake in 2007 infiltrating the tanker to snap photo`s of Metal Gear RAY-Then you start the game.
In the Longer 2nd chapter which takes place two years later-Solid Snake is assumed dead-and you play a new soldier fresh from V.R. training and Force XXI trials who is sent to infiltrate a clean-up facillity to resque the U.S. President along with other hostages,Raiden also has to dispose of some C4 explosives, the Navy SEALs are also there(SEAL Team 10-Alpha and Bravo) for the same reasons although they don`t know that Raiden is there as he is on a Black op.Then you start the game.
MGS2 features stunning graphics, that pushed the PS2 to its limits
and possibly the best looking console game of 2001,the music in the game is done very well,it features music done by Harry Gregson-Williams which suits the environment, and time-the theme song for MGS2 is very well done(like in the opening of MGS2 credits).
For a game set on Espionage-i think the weapons in the game are brilliant,as they are all real world weapons(apart from Fortune`s Railgun) here they are:
Handguns:
Beretta M9 tranquilizer pistol w/Laser sighting.
USP semi-automatic pistol w/flash light.
SOCOM auto-matic pistol w/laser sighting.
Assault Rifles/Carbines:
AKS-74u,the shortened AK-74 w/laser sighting-it is carried by all the Tanker guards, and SHELL 1 Core guards-it is aquired by Raiden,to help him disguise as a guard.
M4 Carbine:Carbine version of the M-16 w/laser sighting-it is carried by the U.S. Marine`s in the Tanker,U.S. Navy SEALs in the SHELL,Solid Snake aquires one when he disguised himself as a Navy SEAL,Raiden can also aquire one optionally.
Sniper Rifles:
PSG-1 automatic Sniper rifle, aquired by Raiden and Solid Snake(only in the SHELL).
PSG-1 T:
Same as PSG-1 except fires sleeping darts, aquired by Raiden optionally.
Grenades:
"pine apple" grenade.
CHAFF Grenade used for stunning electronics like camera`s and so on for about 30 seconds.
STUN grenade:Non-lethal grenade that KO`s guards for a while.
other:
RBG6 Grenade launcher
Stinger missile launcher
Nikita R/C missile launcher
C4 explosives
Claymore Mines.
Weapons that cannot be used by the player:
AN-94 assault rifle-used by the all of the SHELL guards, except for the S1 CORE.
SPAS-12 automatic Shotgun-carried by attack troops when Snake/raiden gets spotted by a normal guard.
FAMAAS-Carried by Solid Snake in Tanker flashbacks-although you cannot use the gun in the Tanker, the flashbacks see Snake running away from tides of water.
SAA:Carried by Ocelot at all times,he is seen spinning them, they are also seen in Shadow Moses flashbacks, that see Ocelot in them(in PS1 graphics).
Makarov:Carries by all Russian soldier in the game as a sidearm,Sergei Gurlukovich also has one.
Mounted grenade launcher(M203 for M-16/M4)
Seen on Snake`s M4 when he tries to kill Solidus Snake, also a desperate Marine attaches one when he tries to disable RAY after Ocelot tries to escape in it.
Beretta M92F:Semi-Automatic pistol used by Marine`s as their sidearm.
GLOCK 18:a Machine pistol used by Fatman and some Attack troops.
FN P-90:Submachine gun used by Solidus Snake and Arsenal Tengu Commando`s(who themselves are commanded by Solidus Snake)
Railgun:(Fictional) used by Fortune
SPECIAL WEAPONS:
HF Blade:First used by Olga Gurlukovich in her Cyborg Ninja persona then hands it to Snake who then gives it to Raiden in Arsenal Gear,it is also used by Solidus Snake and most Arsenal Tengu Commando`s.
