My advice to you...

...after playing Metal Gear Solid on Playstation and the demo for MSG2 about 8 million times each, is to, before November 16th, breakup with your significant other, quit your job and install a refrigerator and microwave in your room because once you get this game, you won't want to do anything else. It is one of the most superb examples of awesome video game play that I have ever seen. Loaded with so many features and things you can do that I'm still discovering new stuff in the demo alone.

In short, I'm taking two weeks off from work just so I can play this game and odds are when I go back to work, I'll still be wanting to be at home playing it.

A HUGE letdown!

If you don't want any secrets spoiled just use the title of this review as your guide: if you loved MGS1, you WILL be disappointed unless all you care about is upgraded graphics. Now, WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!! OK, lets see...how would you feel if JarJar Binks and not Obi-Wan Kenobi was the hero of Episode 2? Uh-huh, I thought so. Meet Jack/Raiden, the whiny brat who takes Solid Snake's place in all but 1 hour of this game! What was Konami thinking? Add to that plot twists that get confusing, or even worse, boring (do you really care about Jack and Rose's relationship? This isn't Titanic folks) and then ridiculous (I KNOW I don't care Otacon was fooling around with his step-mom while his Dad committed suicide in a pool with his half-sister there, who almost drowned, even though she's a great swimmer...lol...give me a break!)Then there's the boss fights...or rather the lack of them. Aside from the final boss fight (which is major BS), I count only 2 real boss fights. One of them, with Fatman, is almost a direct ripoff of the fight with Vulcan Raven in MGS1. This game is a BIG disappointing mess and I went into it with a very open mind. Let me close this by making this point: MGS1 = wolf howling for atmosphere. MGS2 = seagulls flapping and crapping for atmosphere. Enough said. Spend (...) less and buy MGS1.

THE TOP GAME FOR 2001!!!

like most people out there i played the MGS2 demo untill my head turned blue... and then i played it some more!

everything in this game is simply amazing, almost anything in the game can be tampered with, destroyed, etc... let off some steam by holding up a guard and aiming at his crotch to make him drop items, go to the bar and destroy liquor bottles, fill a guards face with tranqualizer darts until he looks like a pin cushion. there are almost no limitations.

this is sure to be the best game created so far, and will set a new standard in video games. My advice is to buy this game the first chance you get!

Some reviewers need to learn to appreciate a good story

First off, I would like to let everyone know that ANYONE who complained about this game haveing too many/long cutscenes is an idiot and obviously can not aprriciate a deep storyline. The cutscenes in MG2 can be long at times, but they work to establish the feel of the game and story. And this they do well.
The gameplay is near perfection, and there is an impressive selection of weapons and ways to get opponents out of the way. There are even some areas in which you have to use the guards to bypass an electronic lock or palm-print activated door.

The graphics are excellent and the voice acting is great. The sound effects and music do well in setting the mood of the situation you happen to be in at the time. This game does require patients and stealth because, although it is possible to go in guns blazing, you won't last long. The AI is impressive in that if they hear a sound(a gunshot, footsteps, a knock on a wall or door, etc.)they will get suspicious and go to check it out. They will even spot footprints in the snow and such. If they spot you, they will call for backup, and even if they don't spot you and you kill them silently, you have to do a good job of hiding their body otherwise when a team is sent to find out why the guard is late with his status report, they will find it and you will have a much tougher time getting through unseen.

You also have to use many espionage skills to your advantage, such as hiding bodies(or yourself) in lockers, or bypasing electronic tripwires that may activate an alarm or detonate a bomb. You even have to inject yourself with a drug while sniping to steady your hand.

As many people as i've heard complain about not being able to play as snake and instead being forced to control an inexpirienced cocky moron named raiden, 1. There is a reason for this: after the first game snake is thought to be dead. 2. Raiden may be slightly annoying, but he's not that bad.

Overall, this is a great game, but it is definetly for the intellegent and the patient, but if you enjoy stealth-action-espionage games and are capable of appreciating a complicated and deep story, this is one of the best.

WOW!

I have to admit that I haven't played any of the previous games in this series, but, WOW!
The graphics are amazing!
Althought you spend most of your time watching computer benerated videos, it is still, (in my opinion),the best game of the year, it took me about 8 hours to beat, and if you aren't familiar with thsi series, the controls will be difficult at first, but once you get a hang of the controls, you realize that they are the easiest controls you have ever used.

PROS:

great graphics
cool story
easy controls
huge environment
posters of hot babes throughout the game

CONS:

short
too much DVD video content

More like this!

It is rare that a game looks this good on the realitively weak PS2. (Sorry but if you compare the real world performance stats GameCube and XBox are lightyears ahead of Sony.) Even Hideo Kojima complained about the difficulty in developing the game, but he still managed to put out a game that looks and feels like a major Hollywood blockbuster. A deep engrosing story involving Solid Snake and later his replacement Raiden in a quest on a mission to stop terrorists from gaining access to the new and invincible Arsenal Gear. But there's so much more to it. The story features a grand conspiracy involving the real rulers of the United States, the threat of nuclear war, and many other themes. Over all both the game and the story are phenominal. But even though I am giving this game five stars I do have a few minor complaints.
Raiden grows on you, but I wanted to be playing as Snake. In the future Konami might want to remember that Snake is the reason we love Metal Gear, and while I hope we haven't seen the last of Raiden, I don't want the game to focus on him as much as this one did, I don't want to loose track of him either. Snake still needs to be the focus.
Also there are some contentinuity issues that must be explained, watch the Colonel closely, and Rose. You'll see what I mean. It raises the "if this is true then how/why did he... at Shadow Moses.. when..." question for those who are utterly engrossed in the story. And hang around after the credits, they provided quite the twist ending. It'll be interesting to see what the third Metal Gear Solid will be like, but hopefully Konami will opt to put it on a system that will allow them to accomplish the graphical marvel that PS2 didn't allow them to do due to it's bottlenecks.

one of the greatest games ever made

THis is a great game! I could not stop playing it. It is just so realistic. The new first person view is so cool. THe AI is really good. If you have a ps2 then this game is a must have. No gamer should not have this game.

Get ready to be disapointed

I have been a die hard metal Gear Fan since the first game on the old Nintendo, and i think that is what the game makers are forgeting ...what made Metal Gear was the game play, not 6 hours of cuts scenes plot twists and guards drooling over girlie pictures .... anyway my review ... from the begining the game rocks but once you get to the part where you "save" the president, the game just goes right down the drain. ... you are going to spend the next 5 hours reading cut scenes, running around naked for 5 minutes then fight a whole bunch of metal gears (this was pretty cool too), 4-5 more hours of cuts scenes then a pretty cool fight with a sword vs the end all enemy but way to short and easy ... if i did not know any better i would swear they changed the ending at the last moment and stuck this crap in due to the events on Sept 11
my advice ..skip all the cut scenes you can at the end, the plot is so silly its not even funny, in fact the plot makes you think this game never really happened! heh ... there is no clear cut Bad Guy to hate, just anoying cut scenes, all the bad guys spend more time backstabbing each other then bothering to kill you
the game graphics, everything is supurb, when you get to play instead of watch ...
in short, play the game enjoy the play skip the cut scenes, or skip the game and just go rent a DVD movie instead

Boring, pretentious and way overrated

Metal Gear Solid 2 is the most dissapointing, melodramatic, unexciting game I've bought in the last few years. After seeing videos from E3 two years ago, I was anticipating this game like none other, and bought a Playstation 2 when it was released.

There are some real problems with this game. First of all, it tries to be something that it's not. I shaked my head in disgust during the opening sequence, as the developer's names appeared like out of a movie, even pretentiously displaying the cliche of "any resemeblance to real life is entirely coincidental".

Hideo Kojima, the "director" of Metal Gear Solid 2 is so high on himself, he goes so far as to refer to it as a "Hideo Kojima game". After viewing this initial display of fake Hollywood gloss, I was presented with the actual game, which is tedious and ridiculous.

I'm not the first one to complain about it, but for only two hours, you play as Snake. The beginning of the game is intriguing, bringing back memories of the PS1 classic; the action and stealth are top notch, the suspense kept high with some riveting encounters and the fantastic new graphics. Once you finish with Snake, the game becomes a train wreck. The rest of the game you play as a different character, Raiden, who is a sniveling, petulant, cowardly "hero".

The story is an absolute disaster, and since the game's focus is more on that than actual gameplay, the overall value is spoiled. It involves tenuous diaglogue and double crosses, with endless cutscenes spliced between playing. The actual gameplay is monotonous; it consists of Raiden running around "The Big Shell", peforming mundane tasks such as diffusing C4 and searching for THE PRESIDENT. Originality in it's finest.

The developers saw how successful they were with the original Metal Gear Solid and suddenly thought they were movie directors. Initially, Metal Gear Solid 2 looked like it was going to be an action packed, exciting game. Instead, it's a pretentious diversion, as it spirals downward after the first 2 hours, flooded with endless dialogue and boring action, wanting to be more like a movie that an interactive gaming experience.

Way too easy.. booooo stupid cg's also
