Much of what was lovely in Riven and Myst is still here, but in my opinion they made some bad choices and did not do adequate testing before release.
Most of my issues are related to playability:
Myst III's performance on computers that are not new, AND with a primo video card is going to be disappointing.
The list of video cards for which the hardware mode will work is fairly short. The list does not include voodoo 2 or 3. Everyone else will be playing using "software emulation" which is painful on anything less than a fairly new system.
Second: For some reason the people who made this software don't get that windows is a multi-tasking environment. The game becomes confused and cannot recover if you alt-tab away while it is open.
This is _very_ annoying to anyone who is used to working with multiple applications open in windows, moving smoothly between icq, notepad, calculator, incoming faxes, schedule reminder pop-ups, or the like. The idea that you lose your game (and your progress) when you perform what is for many people a normal instinctive act in the windows environment, well, it's pretty sad.
My third issue with the game may sound a bit funny, but I'm not joking: Myst III makes me sick.
I, and at least two other people that I know of, have to flee the game periodically because we become nauseated after playing for a while. This seems to be related to the animated 3d sequences, and occurs in situations where attempting to solve a puzzle may lead to viewing the 3d sequence several times over.
So there you are: I'm playing Myst III, but I'm not enjoying it as much as Myst I. My roomate purchased this copy. If I had purchased it I would have returned it.
What a mess! Crashes your computer repeatedly.

Save your money until they fix this nightmare! You can run SCANDISK on your hard drive anytime you want for free - and that's what you'll be doing ALL the time with this nightmare. I have a system that is at or above all the sytem requirements with a standard video card that runs tons of games using DirectX without incident.
Yet Myst 3 crashes all the time. It crashes when you try to restore a save game, it crashes when you try to run a new game, it crashes when you swap CDs. And once you do crash it takes a FULL re-installation of the game to run it again -- if you're lucky. The patch helps not one bit.
Maybe UBISOFTs new business model is to run a game company without the nagging, financial burden of an actual quality assurance department.
Misleading Technical Requirements

I really enjoyed both Myst and Riven, and so was excited to buy Exile. However, I have had nothing but trouble trying to play the game: initial refusal to load, crashes, freezes. Though I checked the hardware requirements before purchase and patiently waited for the patches, I was recently told by Ubisoft tech help that I must purchase a 3D video card in order to play the game. The requirements in the user manual state that a 3D video card is optional. The experience has been very disappointing, not just because I so looked forward to playing the game, but because now I feel turned off from the whole series. Ubisoft really should have made an effort to make the game compatible with more machines and more video and sound cards.
Check for patches before purchasing

I strongly suggest waiting until UbiSoft releases more patches. I recently purchased this game and still cannot run it. This game will not run with Intel chipsets, it will not run with a number of 3D cards. According to people that have been able to play the game, there are numerous other bugs in this game as well. I am looking forward to playing this game. The people that haven't experienced problems say that it is fantastic -- what I would expect from the Myst series. However, I recommend waiting to purchase until patches are released that address the most horrendous bugs. The following urls are good places to look for information.

I purchased this program several weeks ago (preordered it actually) and it will not work on my computer. On the online game forums there are many people complaining about the same problem. And there is little or no response from tech support. I would not reccomend this game to anyone until they work the bugs out (if ever)
Myst III - Exile, Keeps Me Coming Back

I've enjoyed the Myst series from the start. With high quality graphics, challenging puzzles, and intriguing (and sometimes, twisting) story lines, Myst III - Exile continues to improve on an already high level of development and presentation. The graphics are stunning in detail and complexity. The videos are particularly well done, and the smooth panning turns and views are outstanding. And the developers have heard the cries of some earlier users needing a kinder, gentler set of puzzles. But they are not all THAT easy! Now, too, there is a quickly found Linking Book in each world to enable return to where you came from without being stuck having to solve some complex puzzles first. You can move around and try some other things while your subconscious works on the harder stuff. The puzzles often seem a bit more straight-forward, so first-timers will find enough success to keep them working on the more challenging ones. Myst III - Exile is a great game for us problem-solving types. My teenage son and I are about half way (we think) through Myst III and are having a great time with it. We recommend it highly!
They've done it again!

Simply mind-blowing how they manage to get these games so involving. The MYST series is the only series of games where I might sit there looking at something for 15 or 20 minutes just thinking, "Why is this here? Was I supposed to find it? If I was, who wanted me to find it, and why?" I decided to go all the way on this one and purchase the collector's edition, which comes with the guide, (which I must admit I had to refer to on numerous occasions), the soundtrack (loved it), a 'the making of' documentary complete with all the trailers, and a squee pewter figure. It was a great deal because it was only 10 bucks more, it's a shame they don't sell it here on Amazon, but they only made 70,000 so I can understand. The 360 degree view is nearly flawlessly integrated, and of course the cinematic sequences at the end of each age are awesome. I think there are something like six endings, which is neat. But you win in only two of them, so be careful when Saavedro wants to make that deal with you... The idea of the symbols is cool, and the fact that you aren't really sure of what you're trying to do in each age until you've almost reached the end of it gives you that feeling of "So THAT'S what it all means!" every time you beat an age. The story is incredible, as it is in the previous two games. As for it not working, I never had any trouble at all. I've run it on an extreme-high end system (1.7 Ghz), and my friend has run it on a mid-range (700 Mhz), and neiter one of us has experienced any trouble. I recommend this game to anyone that likes to read books about either fantasy or mystery and wishes he/she could actually be there doing it, because that's what this game is all about. After I beat the game (It took nearly two weeks at two or three hours a day), I just went back through the whole game and stopped at each frame, step, slide, whatever you call it, and just looked around and admired everything there. I also saved before each of the cinematic sequences and at the endgame split, because I could just watch me being sealed in an ice ball and rolled around on some rickety tracks again and again and again (really). Buy the game. Period.
Time well spent!!

Exile was an exceptionally good game, having awesome graphics, a beautiful soundtrack, and challenging but not impossible puzzles. Having played both Myst and Riven several times, I really looked forward to Myst3, and was not at all disappointed. I have a new computer with Windows XP and Quicktime and have just recently used it to play the original Myst (1993), RealMyst (2000) and Riven (1997) using the CD Rom drive, and Myst3:Exile (2001) using the DVD drive, and had no trouble at all. For comparison, the only game I have played to rival Myst3:Exile's graphics was RealMyst; and the only game I've played to compare to Exile's puzzles was Schizm (though at times, Schizm was impossibly difficult and I had to cheat a bit to complete it). Exile requires patience, thoughtfulness, and persistence but is well worth the effort.
The story of Myst moves foward (big time)

I just got the game, and people complain about how it crashes, and messes up the pc, and that they have problems installing it. Well it seems to me that they need new computers, because i have a DVD-Rom, with a CD-Writer and it installed just fine.
Now, on about the game... it has to be the best Myst yet. You can fully turn without having to click, but you still must click to go foward. The villain is also pretty cool. He's kind of funny. The graphics have also been upgraded fully. If you thought Riven looked good, you haven't seen anything yet. You also get to communicate with characters more than Riven. Some of the puzzles on Myst 3 are very difficult though, and can leave you flipping through a walkthrough.
But remember, there is always a way out.
