THIS GAME DOES NOT OPERATE THE WAY THE USERS MANUAL SAYS. IT HAS MORE PATCHES THAN MY PANTS. THEY CANNOT FIX MY PROBLEM WHICH DOES NOT LET YOU SAVE GAMES THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO. PLAYED MYST 1 AND RIVEN WITH NO PROBLEM.
Do you like bugs?

If you do then buy this. It crashes your PC especially if it's an HP.
Extremely Poor Quality & Disappointing Follow-up to Riven

I loved Riven and Myst-I, but am very disappointed with Myst-III. The most siginificant problem is that it has so many bugs in it that it is difficult, if not impossible, to run the program. I'm still awaiting a release of the 3rd patch to the game so that I can get it to work properly. Given the care and attention that was taken with Riven, it is disppointing to see what Ubisoft has done (looks like the Microsoft quality control team has joined Ubisoft ...i.e., keep releasing software with bugs). This game was definitely released way too early...suggest you hold off your purchase until they release a working version or an accurate list of pc configurations that are compatible. If you do purchase this program, be sure that you have the most powerful PC available and that you have downloaded all the "patches" from the Ubisoft web site to correct some of the bugs...and then maybe it will work.

I've just completed this game and can say in no uncertain terms that it's one of the best games ever. I enjoyed this chapter of the Myst series just as much, if not more than Riven.
It's great to see an actual actor be involved in a video game such as this. Brad Dourif is perfect! He brings a level of drama, mania, and sympathy to the character he portrays that keeps you riveted to the end.
The new worlds are just as amazing as ever, and the puzzles are genius (and they're not so difficult to figure out that you need a PH.D.).
I couldn't turn the game off, and I can't say enough about it. I want everyone to buy it!
Great game--haven't had any problems

Just bought the game and am working slowly through it. It's very impressive in terms of game construction, and those (like me) appreciative of earlier Myst versions will like it. In contrast to other comments here, I haven't had any problems (yet), even though my machine seems to have similar specs to those who have (Dell with Win Me and both DVD and CD-R drives). Can't comment on how Exile would work on a slower machine, though (it works perfectly fine on my 1Ghz w/ hardware video acceleration). I did a full install of the 4 CDs, but note that the game requires disk 1 to be installed for copy protection. PERHAPS this is part the problem for some users (won't be the first time that copy protection causes problems for legit users). In sum, I'm enjoying the game and haven't had a single problem yet. I strongly recommend it, although based on others' comments, you might wait until bug fixes are posted online.
MYST DID IT AGAIN (for me at least)

If you liked the previous two installments of the Myst series, you won't be disappointed with this one. Graphics are far better than in the previous versions (which was to be expected). The only real downside for me, was the fact that the puzzles were much easier, than in the Riven. It could be because of the experience I've gained by playing parts 1 and 2, or simply I got smarter since I've played Myst and Riven a few years ago. It took me two evenings after work, to beat Myst Exile, but I do hold a graduate engineering degree, and the game's puzzles seem to be geared towards people with technical background. A bit of creative thinking, also helps. I refuse to use walkthroughs - it really defeats the purpose of the game, and devalues the whole experience - there's nothing more rewarding than being able to solve some convoluted puzzle on your own - the longer it takes the better the sense of accomplishment. Whenever I get stuck, I simply take some time off, and return to the game later on, with a fresh mind. Whenever you're faced with a difficult puzzle, don't even try proceeding without some pencil and paper in front of you. Play around with the controls, try to figure out the relationships, try to understand what you're trying to accomplish. Sketch things out, write down everything that seems important - if something seems funny - record the amount of 'funny'. It's almost like trying to reverse-engineer somebody else's product - but in the end, this approach, has always worked for me. I've just ordered Myst IV Revelations, and right after that I'm going to order The entire URU series, because I've read a number of reviews, stating that the puzzles in there are bordering on the impossible to solve (especially in the Path of the Shell) - that is exactly what I'm looking for - the longer I'm stuck on a puzzle, the more gameplay I'm getting for my money...
Samo, samo, very boring!

I played the previous game, Myst and Riven. But it has been enough, this game is too much of the same thing; same kind of graphics, same kind of story and again a lot of reading to do! While in other adventure games the story and clues are incoorporated in conversations, incidents etc, in these games it all comes down to reading a lot of books that feature in the game. Dear makers: if I wanted to read a book I would not play a computergame!
The graphics are again fabulous, but the scenes and the puzzles in this game seemed very similar to those in the previous games. I did not find the puzzles very exciting either, and yes, I admit, often too difficult. I prefer puzzles where objects have to picked up and applied later, with some ordinary puzzles thrown in ocasionally. In Myst III it is mostly ordinary puzzles.
My advice: give this game a miss and choose Atlantis III (Beyond Atlantis II) or The longest Journey (although the puzzles in the latter may be too easy for the fanatic Myst III player).
A BORING DISAPPOINTMENT

Loved Myst & Riven and played them till my eyes nearly fell out. I looked forward to Exile for so long and the day I finally got it I unplugged the phone and thought I was in for months of superb gaming... how wrong can a person be.. I can sum up this game in one word: BORING. I got through the 1st age which consisted of one really LONG & DULL puzzle. I hoped the next age would be better - no. I was faced with more pointless lever pulling & dial turning and thought - no I can't face this anymore. It was just too difficult & uninteresting! Very unhappy I uninstalled the game and sold it after just a week. My recommendation to UBI Soft is to allow more interface with the environment (add an inventory for example) and try to let more actually happen. Walking though screen after screen to pull a lever which MIGHT do something is not fun. I do like the spartan feel of the trilogy but perhaps some more character interaction wouldn't go amiss.
To anyone considering buying this - don't. Even if you LOVED Myst & Riven I'd be amazed if you liked this.
Unacceptable

Since I purchased Myst III/Exile from ..., I think it is appropriate that I post the following letter that I sent to Ubi Soft with the return of the product:
I am enclosing the Myst III/Exile software that I received.
Installation provided two possibilities. First, I could install the entire game on the hard drive, or second I could install a minimal portion of the game on the hard drive and rely on the CD ROMs for what was missing.
At first I chose to install the entire game. The installation completed without any noticeable anomalies. After installation, when I double clicked the icon to run the game, a menu screen came up allowing me to select a new game. Upon selection, the program asked me to insert Disk #1 into the CD-ROM drive, which I did. Unfortunately, the program would not recognize the disk. The software simply refused to recognize that the correct CD-ROM disk had been inserted into the drive.
I tried several reinstallations, but the problem persisted.
Finally, I chose the other installation option, which is to install a minimal portion of the game. After installation, when I double clicked the icon to run the game, a menu screen came up allowing me to select a new game. Upon selection, the program asked me to insert Disk #2, which I did. Unfortunately, the program would not recognize the disk. Repeatedly reinserting the disk did not help. The software simply refused to recognize that the correct CD-ROM disk had been inserted into the drive.
I tried several reinstallations, but the problem persisted. The system I was using is a high end Hewlett Packard (800 MHz Athalon). I then tried several installations on a different machine, another high end Hewlett Packard (850 MHz Intel Pentium III). This time I had a different kind of problem. After installation, when I ran the game your software produced an access violation. Yes, it crashed!!??!!
I am outraged and for that reason I am returning the game with a demand that you not only reimburse me for what I paid for the software, but also for two hours of lost personal time.
You need to understand the following:
1. It is not acceptable that your software contains a copy protection scheme (the requirement that the CD-ROM be present in the drive for it to work) that prevents the legitimate user from using the software.
2. It is not acceptable that your software produces an access violation.
3. It is not acceptable that you cause me to lose my valuable personal time trying the circumvent the defectiveness of your software.
I am therefore returning the software to you with the following bill. I expect payment within 30 days.
Software...........................$40.00
Professional time ($150/hr)........$300.00
Total amount due:..................$340.00

deeply concerned that this series might become more 'commercial,' we were cautious and critical at first (the music lacks merit; the water, some of it, is jello; a commercial artist gets in the way (paintings, 'photos', hasty props)? and are there flaws, bugs? no more. none.
the team has risen to the superb opportunites offered by more recent technology (cubic quicktime). the plot works. the puzzles are all solvable (11 year olds have visual skills)...kudos to the texture people, to the overall pacing, structure, the rich and satisfying, never-ending worlds. more! (and now record for us real cities, prague..)
