Incredible follow-up to a well known line

I'm normally a strategy gamer, but the Myst series is simply breathtakingly beautiful. The first Myst suffered from slideshow-like pacing, and the sequel (Riven) went overboard on the obscure puzzles. The developers definitely listened to feedback before going on to Exile, and it shows in just about any way you can imagine.

The graphics are jaw-dropping. I have a GEforce 3 in my system, and the full 360-around-plus-up-and-down is quick, smooth, and stunning. The stained glass windows shine, the plants glisten, the water ripples with both reflections and submerged items visible. I had people watching over my shoulder in awe as I played, eager to see what else they managed to do with this game.

Video is seamlessly integrated. I'm not just talking "little-person-talking-in-box". I'm talking about being able to look around while a woman is talking to you, and having her visible out of the corner of your eye, merrily bouncing her baby. Things that seem part of the environment suddenly zoom up into the air. Just WAIT until you get to ride the sphere-roller-coaster. I replayed that one many times just to marvel at it.

The music is stellar. The puzzles are much better balanced than in the previous versions - and there are enough hints and 'training' objects lying around that most of them should be pretty straightforward. In a few it's hard to figure out what the puzzle IS, so it takes some trial and error to figure out just what you're looking at before you can even start to figure out what you need to do. That's a gripe with just about every puzzle game on the market, though, so Myst does the best it can here.

Is there a downside? Well, the game isn't entirely stable. I have a pretty good system here, fast and used often, and I did have the game crash on me. Save early, save often. The 360-view isn't exactly 'real world' - it's more like being inside a sphere that has something painted on it. Everything is always exactly in the same relationship to each other no matter how you turn. The graphics are so gorgeous, though, that it doesn't really seem to matter.

Other than that, the game lets you work at your own pace, gives you challenges, gives you clues to those challenges, and provides incredible gameplay for people of all ages and abilities. This is about the best 'buy for anyone, they'll love it' game I can recommend. Be sure to get one for yourself, too!

I wasn't going to bother writing a review, until I read another review stating that if the game doesn't work it's because I'm too computer-illiterate or I have a cheap system!! My computer meets, and in face, exceeds the requirements listed on the box, and yet the game will not run properly. I managed to return it to the store after producing emails from the publisher stating that they are aware that more testing needed to be done, they know there are lots of bugs, yet they don't know if it can or will be fixed at any time in the near future. If the game runs on your system great, but it's a gamble. Check out the tech support forum on the myst 3 official site before you spend your money. And yes, it does deserve to have its ratings lowered, it should not have been released in its current state.

It's not fun, 'cause it doesn't work!

I am very disappointed in both UBI Soft ... for selling me a product that does not work. I have searched and searched the internet trying to find "keys" to get this program going, and while MicroSoft was very quick and helpful to tell me how to do some hard drive clean-up, UBI Soft was unresponsive, to me and others, as I found out by reading their responses on UBI's own site. Even with driver downloads and other such stuff, I cannot get the program to open up. Shame on all involved! A warning label should come with this program. My computer is new [6 mos.] and very fast with a large large hard drive. This is a sad state of affairs and sullies the reputation of the entire Myst genre.

Waste of my money

I just could not get into this game. I really liked Riven, but Myst III does not, in any way, compel me to keep on trying to solve the puzzles in order to get farther. I solved the first major puzzle, which involved lining up reflecting lights in order of color to open a door on an island. It took me a while, but I finally figured it out, and opened the door...only to find another puzzle preventing me from opening the NEXT door. I mean, come on. I guess I'm just not a big fan of puzzle games anymore, or something. The story does NOT make me want to solve them, at any rate. It's slow and sluggish, at least at first (I never got past the first part, because I was just too bored.)

So, the eagerly-awaited Myst III: Exile is sitting on my desk, collecting dust. I feel absolutely no urge to go play it, although I will give it one star for the pretty graphics.

Buy this game only if you really, REALLY like thinking and solving almost-impossible puzzles. Everyone I know who has this game was forced to buy the guide to go with it.

Check this out: Pentium 3 and over 800 MHZ and the program won't load. I come up with a M3EXE and MSS32.DLL and the game didn't even load properly. Disappointed!!!!!

After waiting a very long time for the successor of Riven, the result is kind of amazing. The still images of Myst and Riven have been replaced with 360 degrees panoramic views. Even when viewing some animation, changing your view is possible. The worlds created are stunning. Especially Edanna, where you walk around in a huge tree, is very beautiful. It's like walking around in a jungle, you can almost feel the tropical temperature. As in the previous 2 games, you need to solve some strange "puzzles" to finish the worlds. Just keep your eyes open, and try combining the things you see or read in the diaries. After 2 1/2 nights of playing, I finished the game, and I must say it was a very nice experience. I'd recommend it to all gamers who like to play an adventure from time to time.

As for the system requirements: It worked fine on both my Thunderbird 900/Geforce2 and my PentiumII 300/TNT2, running Win98. So any system less than 3 years old with a decent videoadapter should be able to give you this very special experience.

I've been in love with the myst series from the first one itself. Mind crunching puzzles is my food and its been a pleasure to see a hell lot of improvement on graphics in the EXILE. A puzzle-solver's best entertainment ever ! More than 2 thumbs up!

Must buy for gamers!

I am an avid gamer and have waited for this game ever since I first heard about it. I just got the game today and have been indulging myself into the worlds of Exile. The scenery is breath-taking and the game play is fast. It is so much better than the first two games as far as beauty and game play. It has Riven's graphic, but from a 3D view. The puzzles haven't been too challenging so far, but of course I have no idea how far I am into the game. It's been fun though, no doubt about that. This the the game I have looking for for a long time. It is a must have for gamers of all kinds!

A word on acting

All the reviews I am reading seem to overlook one aspect of this game, and that's the acting. Of course, I'm not talking about the acting of Maria Galante or Rand Miller, which is merely adequate. I'm talking about the acting of one Mr. Brad Dourif.

His acting chops are, in a word, impressive. Some may think his acting is a little broad, but I think that's neccesary for the medium. If you are playing on a 15-foot movie screen, you can afford to be subtle. But on a computer screen, it helps if you jack the performance up a notch or two.

When Saavedro is faced with the possibilty of being trapped for another indeterminate amount of time, Brad manages to convey the moment perfectly. He really makes you care about the character, a person who has been your adversary throughout the whole game.

Making someone care about the hero of a movie is easy; evoking sympathy for the villain shows true skill, and Brad Dourif pulls it off in spades.

I received Myst III: Exile a long time ago, played it, had fun, and then put it in the back of my storage shelf. I've always loved the whole Myst series. They all contain so many picturesque scenes that make me wish I could exist in that colorful world. After just recently digging this game out to try again out of curiousity, I've come to a new appreciation for the game.

The people who made the story, puzzles, and graphics must all be geniuses. This series of games has been like nothing I've ever played before.

Myst III by far has better graphics than Myst and Riven. Its puzzles are also refreshing considering that the puzzles in Riven forced me to lose the will to live (excessively hard puzzles...tedious). It keeps in format with the original Myst in that you have a main island that is connected to other worlds by the written books (this was not mostly the case in Riven because of the tracks).

The sound schemes are inredible. The short, moody songs with the graphics to make stuff really good. The combination of the two elements of sight and sound make me feel like I'm really in that beautiful world. It's truly an amazing feeling.
