I loved playing Myst and Riven, and when i was playing those games it was all i thought about, and i was obsessed untill i beat them. This game did not give me the same experience, and i think ive figured out why. What made Myst and Riven so great was the magnitude of the puzzles, the fact that the clues were scattered all over the islands and you had to piece them together and suddenly theyd click together in your mind in that moment that makes the game worth playing for us. Myst Exile did not have these kinds of puzzles, instead theyve moved to a more, "do this puzzle and when your finished do this one" the puzzles are very self contained even to the point where each age has about 3 puzzles to beat then your done and you never need to go back. It lacks the cohesiveness of the past games and because of this you cant get into it like you could those. Other reviews here have said that the game "lost the magic" and i think this puts it very well. On the other hand, the game is not necessarily bad, and i did enjoy playing it most of the time. Its not a bad game, but if your going into it expecting the quality youve come to expect from the series, then you are going to be dissapointed.
Beware of the known bugs

I haven't played the game yet. Not because I don't have time (which if I were quite honest I don't) or because I'm not interested. I CAN'T play the game.
I pre-ordered the game and picked up the collector's version on May 9th. I installed the game and tried starting it, only to have it crash just after choosing the graphics mode. I checked out Myst3.com and found out that this is a known bug. For many video cards you will not be able to play the game at all until the patch is finally released.
I am truly upset that I payed good money for a game I cannot play and may not be able to play for a while. I can't even return the game because (a) I waited because the message I got said it would be out soon, and now it's past the return date and (b) the publisher has sent messages to the retailers telling them to send people to the website if the game doesn't work, so the retailer won't take the game back.
From the website it appears the particular bug I have is not the only bug. There has been one patch released that fixes some of the other (in my opinion less important) bugs. I'm sorry, but if I can't even start the game it is a much more serious problem than a few video glitches the other patch promises to fix.

Many people said not to buy this game because it won't work on XP. I have the game running just fine on XP. When I first installed the game a message popped up that said the game won't run on "Windows NT". I just clicked the ok button and continued to install and it worked. I'm glad I didn't listen to those guys. This game is pretty fun.
Breathtaking, Isnýt it?

The first words you hear, when the game opens are "Breathtaking, Isn't it?". The rest of the adventure answers that question with a resounding "YES!!". The graphics and sounds are top notch, the most detailed and realistic I have ever seen on a PC! The new 360-degree viewing is very easy to use. Although the primary story line is thin, and linear, it is still heart-pumping. The puzzles are well designed and engineered, and are actually fun to tackle, so far! It is not as frustrating as Myst or Riven, but still challenging.
The only thing worthy of complaint is that its "3D" mode is not compatible with Voodoo2 or Voodoo3. Computers with those cards will have degraded graphics quality. I have an ATI Rage card, so my graphics are better!
I have not actually completed the whole game yet, but I will be more than happy to spend much of my free time in the alternative worlds this game offers.
Terrific game!

This is a great sequel to the Myst series... OK, if you didn't like the first two, you won't like this one. So don't listen to [people] who waste their time (and yours!) reviewing software games they hate!
For those who do like Myst, it's truly grand. The puzzles aren't as difficult as some in Riven, which I consider to be a good thing. The game play and 3D viewing really flows! I have a 866MHz computer with an nVidia GeForce2 MX card, and things work without a hitch. I understand that ubisoft expects to send out a free replacement CD which fixes all known bugs (CD drive H:+ error, INTEL-based graphics cards, etc); you can sign up for it at their site. I wish they had done more testing before shipping, but then I'm used to Microsoft products so it's not a great shock to me.
Anyway, beautiful graphics, great sound, and interesting puzzles make this a really fun game to play. If you want shoot-em-up's, if you want Alpha Centauri-like strategy games, look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you liked Myst and Riven, you'll LOVE this!

i was psyched when my girlfriend bought myst III. she and i played through riven together in about a week of late nights after work and had a total blast so it was with great anticipation that we loaded up the new CDs and let 'em rip. initially the video didn't work at all (atrus talked REALLY FAST and sounded like a duck... cute) but fixed itself when we installed the latest version of quicktime on her powerbook g4. once we got going we had a good time but compared to riven the game was kind of a letdown. many of the puzzles were not only simpler but less elegant in our opinion and the designers' attempt to anchor the backstory using the INCREDIBLY overwrought brad dourif were at best laughable and at worst as annoying as h*%l! myst and riven sketched the story and then let you work out the details, exile beats you over the head with it which greatly decreased our enjoyment. still, edanna was one of the most beautiful places i have ever visited - virtual or otherwise - and it felt good to immerse ourselves once again in the world of myst. my advice to the designers for next time: 1) don't wait so long, 2) send brad to over-acters anonymous and 3) design the puzzles like you really mean it.
Worked well with my Windows XP!

I've always been a fan of the MYST genre of games and by no means an expert. I guess with my limited computer knowledge, I somehow got Myst Exile to work beautifully on my Windows XP system and it runs at only 500 MHz (so it's old...but it works!)
I just loaded the game and the patches before doing anything and had a blast! Myst 3 is good fun for the patient gamer and for those who know that problem solving improves thinking. I can see how the influence of the Journeyman series influenced this game. It reminded me of the Journeyman III game, which I enjoyed a few years back.
Brilliant Acting, Ingriguing Puzzles, & Great Graphics

First of all, I was actually able to solve the puzzles on my own. With Myst and Riven, I had a bunch of trouble understanding the puzzles, and when I finally found the solutions on the internet, I realized that I would never have figured those puzzles out by myself! Exile is so much better. The puzzles seem so obvious once you figure them out, but figuring them out is quite a challenge in some places.
I also really enjoyed the way each age ended. I don't want to ruin any suprises, but the endings of each age are very exciting to watch!
3D rendering really adds to the effect. Now, instead of a whole bunch of pictures, you get 3D shots everywhere you go. Amazing how technology can improve so drastically over time!
Finally, check out the acting. Brad Dourif, who plays the villian, has some amazing monologues -- especially towards the end of the game. Dourif really enhances the already lively storyline with his acting.
What else can I say? This game rocks! As long as you have a fast computer, a good amount of patience, and you enjoyed the first two games, you should buy this one.
P.S. A word of caution: Do not begin playing this game without completing Myst and Riven first. This game assumes that you already know one of the most important secrets in the earlier storylines...
If you can get it to work...you'll still be disappointed

I bought this game after checking the other reviews. My computer is way above the game's specifications. I did check with the manufacturer who assured me it would run on Windows 2K. By the time my game arrived, they had changed their minds and are now saying it won't work with Windows 2K. With no help from them, I managed to get the game up and running smoothly, but I was expecting the same challenge as Myst and Riven and it's just not there. Sure, the graphics are spiffy, but the plot and puzzles aren't very challenging. It took me longer to get the game to run than it did to play it. There are two patches available, but more are needed to resolve problems others are still having so you might want to wait until everything is fixed or you may find yourself spending a fortune to upgrade your computer...or tossing the game.

Exile is an outstanding gaming experience. It deserves five stars. It has one introduction (Tomahna), one lesson (Jnanin), and three prerequisite (Voltaic, Amateria, Edanna) ages that, when solved, will lead you to the Narayan age. Solving the Narayan age will return you to Tomahna, and your quest is completed. The Voltaic, Amateria, and Edanna ages may be played in any order. The Amateria age was my personal favorite. Its scenes were so spectacular that they reminded me of why I loved Myst. My only objection was that the Narayan age is too short. I wanted to ride in the gondola with Saavedro when he returned to his home city. But this objection also shows Exile's high gaming quality. Even after hours of play, you simply don't want this game to end.
A great many of the negative reviews were predicated on the fact that pre patch version of Exile had an abundance of bugs. This version was installed, and ran perfectly, on my Win2000 system. The Version 1.2 Myst III: Exile patch was not necessary. Ironically, my Windows ME system did require this patch.
