I would really love to give this game a great review as I have greatly enjoyed the previous 2 Myst/Riven games however......
I, like hundreds of thousands of other devoted Myst/Riven fans are still unable to play the game due to UBISoft misrepresenting the system requirements for the game and then releasing a product full of bugs. This game has been out for 2 weeks now and thousands of us are still waiting for the "patch" to be released so we can play a game in "software" mode (a substandard mode of graphic play) and then experience other, unexplained, un-"patched" bugs and game crashes.
I wish I could play the game.

I have been trying to load this game into my computer for the longest time, and I am not the only one who has problems with this game. If you go on the website under Myst III Exile you will see that there are other people like me who have experienced major problems with this game. I owe Myst and Riven and had no problems with these two games, but now unfortunately, I don't know what else to do in order to get any help from the makers of Myst. I can't say that this game is badly rated, only because I haven't had the pleasure to play it. Lynette

We purchased Myst 3 [...] and so far have not been able to play it due to bugs in this version. It seems that it is not comptable with older video cards. Although we run a AMD-200 with a Fusion 16 Meg card, the program crashes and leaves us with an S3 video message. Checking with UBI Soft, they seem to be aware of this bug but have not written a patch yet. Thus, this game gets 1 star for failing to even load correctly and we are out [money] for purchasing a pre-order copy.
Works on Win2000 and is Great

While Exile is not officially supported on Windows 2000, it installed and ran without a hitch. I have an overclocked duron, asus MB, Matrox G400 Max (an ancient graphics card), and windows2000. I have had no errors and the game starts flawlessly.
If you liked Myst or Riven this game is a definite must. Remember how Myst and Riven were slide shows? Exile is similar but the slides are now full 360 degree up and down, side to side pannable. You can look anywhere you want at each point and the panning response to the mouse is excellent. There are even two modes to look around in (get the game and you will understand).
This has got to be about the most immersive game I have ever played. The soundtrack is superb! and the detail in the images will not disappoint. The acting is very high quality. This game has overall high production qualities in my opinion. I have seen some of the discenting opinions. If you experience one of the bugs, that's a disaster, but the first patch has already been released. But I simply disagree with some of the statements about image quality and game play.
I buy lots of games. Nearly all don't have this sort of first impression. I was in awe that the smoothness of movement and viewing held true to what I saw in game play demo movies. I just thought they were running on super souped up rigs. Mine is a good machine, but it ain't no screamer.
Try it for yourself. There are a lot of extremely strong opinions being floated about this game. This is expected for any game with this much anticipation. If I think back to when Riven came out, there was similar strong opinions. Some saying the bugs were severe (which they were, and were fixed). Others said it just didn't compare to Myst...it went on and on. There was also equally loud noises from those who loved Riven. I almost didn't buy Riven because of the complaints. I decided I'd at least try it. And I loved it. The same thing happened to me with Exile. I was debating canceling my preorder from Amazon, but decided to give it a try. And I havn't been disappointed.
You never know...you just might like it a lot.
Brilliant addition to the MYST legacy...

Who is the mysterious (MYST, get it?) thief that has stolen the linking book to Releeshan? All those people in the Age of Releeshan will be lost at the hands of a madman if you fail to recover the book and return it to Atrus. Absolutely gorgeous Ages, now enhanced by true 360 degree viewing movement make this edition to the series the best yet. Larger and more difficult than MYST, but not as frustratingly impossible as RIVEN, Exile is a smart and savvy journey into the stunning Ages and pages of the linking books. Full of brain teasers and clever puzzles, Exile is perfection in and of itself, and is highly recommended for the "I love Jeopardy" crowd, as opposed to those that think "Wheel of Fortune is toooo haaaard". Lost alot of sleep playing this game! You will be thinking of solutions to puzzels at work, school, and as you lie in bed at night trying to fall asleep (while in the distance, you can hear Exile calling you back to the computer to play for "just 15 more minutes..."). Highly, highly, highly recommended!!
An excelent continuation.

I was hooked on Myst the first time I played it. After playing the sequel, Riven, I thought that there was no way that they could do a sequel that could top it. In a way, I suppose they didn't. When I first heard that Myst III was going to be made by another company I was scheptical, but they were obviously the right choice. The graphics are fantastic, and the new engine is a great improvement over the static images. The storyline is just as strong as it is in Riven and Myst. I'm glad that someone finally got around to filling in some of the details of what it was that Sirrus and Achenar did to the worlds they visited, something that I always wish was explored more in the other games. It is well worth the cost to play this worthy addition to the Myst Trilogy.
The most rewarding Myst yet!

I was very worried when I heard that a third Myst game was coming even though the Miller brothers have now gone their separate ways. I should have known better. Exiile has the best graphics, the best interface, and the most rewarding gameplay of all the Mysts.
Learning from the frustration many suffered at Riven's extraordinarily open ended geography, the game makers returned to the idea of one base age from which all others could be entered. The result of this is that Exile spans four disks, one less than Riven, which seemed impossible since everything about it is so much better. The one obvious thing to metion is that there is now completely spherical geography, so you can look everywhere. After the stills of the first two games, this ability knocked my socks off.
Also, there's the storyline. We are introduced quickly to a new villain who steals a linking book Atrus was working on right in front of you. You follow through the book he used and, with no time to wonder why Atrus and Catherine aren't following you (this is explained at the end) you set out in hot pursuit. If you solve the puzzles on this age, you will come face to face with the thief, but that's just the beginning. The real improvement this storyline has over Myst and Riven is that the villain is someone we can feel sympathy for. He's not pure evil like Sirrus, Achenar, and Gehn were. This ultimately makes it possible for everyone to have a happy ending.
The ages themselves are also a wonder to behold. The base age isn't very special in itself, but the places you can get to from it are incredible. There's Edana, where everything is organic and you must restore the balance of nature; Voltaic, where you complete a series of electrical puzzles with no idea of what your ultimate goal is; and Amateria, where you must work with three standard seeming puzzles, although if there's a better payoff than the result of solving Amateria, I haven't seen it.
Yes, Exile is all this and more. I haven't given a nearly decent explanation for anything, and leave that for you to discover. If you haven't gotten it yet, snap out of it!
Thoroughly Wonderfull, Thoughtfull game

This game is the best of the Myst games, and I found it to be easier in a way than the other two. It is still very challenging, but in a logical way. You can solve this game through close observation of the worlds, the charachters, and clues. There are a few puzzles which may seem random trial and error if you haven't found the clue yet, but you may later realise it was right in front of you. As with the first two, you will find much needed information in journals.
The beauty of the imagery is incridibly breathtaking. I found myself lost in these worlds with a feeling of really being there. This game also has 360 degrees of view at any location, which is more realistic than the play of the previous two games.
The intence drama of the game also pulls you in, and you are actually able to take part in this, rather than simply observe. You also have choices as to how you would handle the conclusion, and different conclusions to the game as a result. The only drawback I found to the endings is that there was only one truly happy ending to the story. I would have liked to see at least one more happy ending.
I eagerly await another addition to the Myst series.
Over too soon, but great while it lasted

PREVIOUS MYST AND RIVEN EXPERIENCE HELP IN TECHNIQUE TO PLAY: I think playing both Myst and Riven give you a real advantage in the logic in this game. Others might find this game intimidating.
A LOGICAL APPROACH AND TEAM PLAY HELP: It helps being logically oriented and having a good sense of direction. It is a real blast playing it with another person, in the sense that you bring in different strengths.
AMAZING GRAPHICS, GREAT SOUND: Once again you play a wonderful game with amazing graphics. The music entices you to explore and understand.
PUZZLES INVOLVED AND NEED ATTENTION TO DETAIL: The puzzles are enough to delight most. Hard, is relative. It is more of a thought process. But you really need to pay attention to detail. Some may find this tedius. The plant world has some very hidden paths.
THE BASIC SCENARIO: You start out in one location where you have 3 sets of puzzles to solve. Ironically, these puzzle solutions indicate the nature of the world they open to you. Within each of these remarkably different worlds, you have to find a unique solution as well. Finally once you solve those worlds, you finish in a final location with a puzzle to solve and a dilemma to resolve, where you must make the right choice. There is more than one possibility for a solution. In our case the most humane, brought us the solution, but you had to do this intelligently. I don't dare say more.
TOO SHORT: The only negative, is that this game could have been longer. We got about 20-24 hours of play time and we took our time over 2 weeks.
COMPARING TO RIVEN AND MYST: There was more story line than Riven but, equivalent on story to Myst. Exile was a bit more graphically detailed than Riven and much more than Myst with the 360 degree views. However, if you move around along, some might find this disorienting. I felt it made it seem more real.
INSTALLATION WENT VERY SMOOTH FOR ME: Installation went very smoothly, but slow as I took the option for the full installation. Full installation loads all the CD content onto your harddrive. We had one crash early in the game, that may not have been caused by the game and one at the very end after the credits. This was the only problems we had. I have a 733MHz clone PC, so I'm not sure of my sound or video card. However, I know I have a pretty new video card.
A great game... When is the next one?????
Mis-lead

I bought this game a month ago. I have not played it yet because I checked the system requirements on the box and it said that an 8 m video card was optional. It now seems that is very misleading. I intended to play on my laptop because I really like this type of game. My laptop is not old yet it seems it does not have the hardware required to run this game. I will be returning the game to where I bought it. I am very disappointed.
