First of all, Fable is an amazing game. The new ideas, the choices, the graphics, the sound are excellent. The magic controls are a little difficult but overall combat is an easy to use and fun system. The quests are interesting and fun and I love flirting with all the ladies. My biggest problem with the game is that it doesn't fulfill more of the premise. I'd like to see more options, more quests, more choices - especially in regards to weaponry, armor, character qualities, and appearance. Already experience earning and spending are unique and easy to use allowing customizable fighting styles... you can be any type of Hero you want - rouge, villian, mage, warrior or be them all. I love picking and choosing which spells I want and which I want to upgrade, whether I am more concerned with being strong and buff or sneaky and fast... or strong and sneaky or buff and fast. It does seem to me that our "Hero" ages very quickly and although I have not yet beaten the game I get the feeling that it won' be many hours longer so I'm trying to run around and complete lots of side quests. The game does occasionaly "skip" or "freeze" during scene or action changes but overall looks great. Navigation through the paths and over terrain is a little hard to manage and time between lands loading does seem to drag. What I love about this most is the promise... I can't wait until Fable 2 and the next generation of RPGs this is bound to spawn. Ahhh... completely creatable characters and huge worlds with 1000s of quests and basically everything this game offers now in it's infancy grown strong with experience. Sounds great.
Good. But not good enough.

When I got this game for Christmas I was really looking forward to it. It looked cool back in September, but i decided I'd rather get Halo 2 than spend my $50 on a game I wasn't too sure would be good. I did ask for this, and when I got it I played it a lot, but it seemed to be lacking, and when I thought, I realized what it was.
This is supposed to be an RPG, telling the story of a character that you start at 13, and you grow through the game, learning to fight at the Guild of Heros. Unfortunately for for Microsoft and Lionhead Game Studios, they failed to make an RPG. Don't get me wrong, but this is more of a hack'n slash game than an RPG where your character develops over time, instead you do quite a lot of walking around, and while the fighting is fun, you can't really ignore the main quest: The guilmaster at the Hero's Guild keeps saying in an annoying voice that you have an important quest card, and if you pick it up, there really isn't much eles to do.
Back to my hack'n slash point, this is not a pure fighting game, but its not like Elder Scrolls III Morrowind (a truly awesome game, you do fight a lot. However, this is not neccessarily a bad thing, fighting in this game is pretty fun, especially when you pick out your favorite spells and atributes from custom skills. Aside from my main point, I would like to say that the spells and skills are very basic, and you cannot become a trader or learn to make things, you just get stronger with your sword and bow, you can become better at negotiating prices and sneaking around, and learning new spells. But I have a complaint with this, because in an RPG that is supposed to allow your character to be customized and developed, that's what should happen, but Fable is sadly lacking in character development and customization.
One thing that makes up for Fable's bad spots is excellent graphics, and (aside from magic) being very realistic. You get scars on your face if you don't block or dodge attacks, you grow horns and look quite sinister if you're cruel to villagers and are a thief. You also get tan and bright blue eyes, and your scars seem to fade a little with time and a lot of good deeds. Enviroments are detailed, but not destructible or fully interactable like they are in Morrowind. The graphics are great, but as a character developing RPG this game isn't so hot.
As I've seen in some other reviews posted, this game is extremely linear. Another reviewer said that hopefully it would be like Morrowind (I mentioned it above), but less overwhelming in size and detail. It sure was a lot less overwhelming in size, detail was great, but it seemed TOO small. If you want a good RPG go with something like KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) so you can get more playing time. I thought KOTOR was a lot better, characters actually had dialogue, and you could respond (in Fable you never say a word). Fable seemed too short, I didn't do every sidequest, but I did a lot and managed to win Lady Grey's heart, and the game only took me like 10 hours. Get KOTOR, after I played about maybe half of it, started over, and still got about 20 hours of gameplay out of it.
OVERALL VIEW
This barely qualifies as an RPG, though it is immensely fun and has very detailed graphics. Some bad spots are that you can't really get away from the main storyline like you can in other open RPG's, so this one isn't very open at all. Also, your character has very little options when picking how to improve, the categories for skills are very basic; Strength, Skill, and Will (Magic). There is a lot of fighting and trekking around without a very deep storyline. Fable is fun and with good combat, but has too much action, even for an action RPG. Except for a couple of boasts and quests this game is absurdly easy with the time slow spell.
PROS
-The game is quite realistic (not including the magic)
-Fighting is ok
-A few limited side quests
CONS
-Too much fighting and too little story
-A ton of loading and trekking from one area to the next
-Seems short
A TIP
Wait through ALL the credits after you beat the game, and you'll get to play some more. Go watch TV or something, because they take forevery. I swear I'm not lying.
RECOMMENDATIONS
-Get World of Warcraft if you have PC and you want customizable RPG's with action
-Get KOTOR or Morrowind (both mentioned above)for XBOX
This is a GREAT game

I don't know why everyone is complaining about the game being too short, this game is SO great for replay, there is so many different paths you can take your character down. So if you think it's not long enough, instead of mumbling and groaning about how short it is, play it again!! It's different every time.
Good but not great

I was very excited about this game when I first heard about it and rushed out to get it after it was released. I played it through once within a couple of weeks as a warrior hack-n-slasher. I tried playing through a second time as a pure will user but lost interest before I got through. After thinking about it I came up with the following pros and cons.
Pros:
+ Character development is pretty good, but I wish that the will spells were more than just support for warriors.
+ Easy playing experience. You don't have to work very hard to get good at this game.
+ Really beautiful graphics. The character models, voices, scenery are great. There are a couple of glitches, but in general each area is beautiful.
Cons:
- Story and game are WAY too short and simplistic (ah he's bad because he has a "bad guy's voice").
- Missions are way too simple and boil down to follow the marker on your map to where the object that has been hidden for eternity is and watch cut sceen or kill bad guys.
But my biggest negative for this game is:
- REALLY LONG FREQUENT LOAD TIMES. Come on, if GTA:SA can create good graphics for an entire state without a single load screen then why is it that Fable requires a 5 to 10 second loading screen between each small zone? I thought the XBOX was supposed to put an end to load screens since it had a hard drive and far superior processing power over the PS2!
My opinion is that this is a good game that's worth a rental, but it has a short play time and very little replay value. Now having said that this is what I hope a sequel for Fable will have:
+ The ability to be a stand alone wizard or archer if that is what you choose to be (ie not just a great sword for a warrior, but a great bow, and maybe a great magical staff or something).
+ More variety in weapons and armor so that your wizard character and warrior can dress differently.
+ Longer more in depth story.
+ Either a free roaming world like the GTA's or much larger areas with much shorter load times between them.
+ More sub quests, jobs, or other things a la GTA:SA.
+ More monsters. Killing bandits is ok, but the real fun was fighting the awesome monsters in Fable (Faries, Earth Trolls, etc).
Fun once you get into it...

First let me start by saying that I'm not a big fan of role playing games. In fact the only other RPG I've played is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. So I'll compare this to that game. This game started off too slow for me and I almost stopped playing it after 15-30 minutes. I'm glad I stuck with it though, because I had a blast playing this game. The graphics aren't the best, but they're good enough. The sound is good. The storyline is good. The controls are a bit hard to figure out, for example I had magic powers that I didn't know how to use until I was near the end of the game. There really is nothing bad I can say about this game other than the too frequent loads. Sometimes it was just stupid. That's the reason why I'm not a big fan of RPG's. I cant stand waiting for every little area to load up. Anyway, I was totally wrapped up in this game. You can get married, have sex(nothing shown), divorced, and fat if you eat enough. You can even drink beer until you blow chunks or get someone else drunk. I loved the depth of the game. There's so much to do other than chop heads off. Did I mention that you can decapitate people?
In comparison to Star Wars KOTOR, this game is short. You should beat it in about 20 hours, compared to 40 for KOTOR. Also, KOTOR has turn-based fighting, where you take turns hitting/shooting. You hit them, then they hit you until someone is dead. That is a lot easier than in Fable. In Fable its all out fighting. If you're good you might not even take any hits. If you're not you might not get any hits in.
Bottom line is if you are a fan of RPG-type games, then you have to play this game. Yes it is short so rent it if you want.
Four and Half Stars - An RPG for gamers who don't like RPG's

Fable, in development for years, finally arrived on XBOX late this summer, and gamers were finally treated to its ambitious gameplay.
As a hardcore gamer who never really got in to Role Playing Games of any kind, (save perhaps Zelda and Shenmue), this game threatened to get me hooked on the genre. It is an RPG for gamers who don't like RPGs; and RPG that even casual gamers can enjoy.
Combat is all real-time, not turn-based, which is a large part of why I was able to ease in to it. Expect lots of hack and slash gameplay; whether you choose to use magic, swords and melee weapons, or bows and arrows.
Fable's main draw might be its ambitious good vs. evil gameplay. Every event you take part in throughout the game, and most missions you take on, will be open ended enough to allow you to approach them in a good or evil way. For instance, depending on whether you team with bandits and kill villagers, or team with the villagers to go after the bandits will give you either good or evil points, and your allignmnet (from good to evil) will alter accordingly. The more evil you become, the more evil your character appears; eyes glow fiery red, your hairline recedes, and horns sprout from your forehead. Become a good hero, and you will begin to glow. Either way, villagers and merchants will react to you differently. For instance, my first time through the game, I chose to become evil, so I spent a large amount of time slaughtering civilians and merchants in the beginning. By the end of the game, I couldn't approach a merchant to purchase an item wihtout him running away. This good/evil system is not entirely a gimmick as you may expect. It is an intriguing aspect to a great game.
The graphics are gorgeous. Up close, charcaters faces look very detailed, light dances off your clothing as you run through the forest... Very pretty, indeed. And the voice acting is also impressive during cinematics. The real-time cinematics look good, but some cinemas are told like a story book, with drawings and narration, and those stand-out as the best story-telling aspects of the game.
The game itself is fairly short for an RPG; anywhere from eight to twelve hours I'd say, the first time through, depending on how you choose to play. The story is not anything special, but the gameplay is terrific, and incredibly addicting.
I seriously recommend checking this one out.
A bang for your buck

Fable is the best game I've found in a while. I consider myself an occasional gamer and certainly not an RPG fanatic. I have played many Final Fantasy games, but have never made my way through them because of the turn-based fighting style or the silly nature of the game. (Singing and dancing your way to victory? Give me a break...who needs DDR fantasy style?) I played this game for the first time at a friend's house and had to purchase the game as soon as I left.
The graphics and sound in this game are AMAZING. I love the attention to detail.
The gameplay is interesting. Not being able to totally customize your character is a serious drawback, but the ability to choose your hair, facial hair and tattoos is a start.
As far as the Good vs. Evil battle is concerned, I was disappointed that which one you choose doesn't really determine the outcome of the game. It does make for interesting side quests though.
The side quests are entertaining, but the annoying voice reminding you to go and get quest cards so that you may continue with the main story line could have been omitted.
I haven't found any real value to trading, since gold isn't very hard to find and running around from town to town buying and selling doesn't really benifit much.
All in all, I think this game is certainly worth the price paid for it. I would recommend going to Blockbuster and renting before you buy to see if this game is really for you. You will probably find yourself addicted and, if you're like me, your love of gaming will be renewed and enhanced.
Best RPG game ever made, I certainly don't think so

Now the only reason why I picked up this game is because I love to play RPGs; not because of all the hype put on it.
The different kind of things you could do in this game but have never done is other RPGs like having sex, getting married, or the many changing characteristics of your guy are really cool and is really one of the only positives of this game. All the running around and killing and doing a numerous ammount of quests is nothing new, and the plot isn't something to get excited over. You're childhood years are ruined by bandits raiding your town supposedly looking for your family and you. You're then taken under the wing of a guild of heroes and there you are to live out all the dreams and become the hero/villan you've always wanted to.
One question though, so after your parents die and your hometown is momemtarily taken away from you (you see it again later on, rebuilt nonetheless) all you can do is cry over your dad for a couple of seconds (forget the incoming bandit about to kill you) and then throw up after you've walked around a little bit? Where the f*** is the emotion and the sudden act of revenge you should be taking againest the bandits, all you do go out and become a hero, with really no storyline indication that in the future you will be taking action againest those bandits? And if you're not a hero you become evil? that doesn't make any sense, people kill your family and burn down your home so you want to go out and kill everybody for a living, well you can at least kill those bandits while you're at it, but of course you never do.
That is just one of the many unanswered questions about this game that make this game way to confusing to want to go out and play again. Did I mention about 15-20 hours max playing gametime, depending on your playing speed, finishing every single quest, opening all the special chests, getting all the legendary weapons, and messing around with the flirting/marriage/getting laid deal.
If I were you I would think twice before picking this up, and instead get some of the better Role-Playing games out there in Morrowind, Baldur's Gate, Diablo(I know), or Dungeon Siege, whatever you're into.
Why Am I Not Hearing More About This Game?

Fable is the story of a little boy who lives in a fantasyland called Albion. When his hometown of Oakvale is rendered asunder by evil men, he is found as the only survivor by a Hero named Maze. Maze takes him in to live with him at the Guild of Heroes, medieval Jedi Knights, where he will learn the ways of, well, heroism until he reaches manhood.
From the beginning of the game you are given choices of how to act and what to do. You can be a model child or a little brat. But pretty much everything you do is something that you will have to answer for later, be it in the way townspeople react to you or in the way you look. You have to eat, you have to sleep and you have to watch what you do. Eat too much apple pie and you get fat. Drink too much and you get drunk. Commit murder and the guards hunt you down like a dog. These are things you will have to take into account as you venture out on your own, choosing the rocky road of the jerk or the enlightened path toward sainthood. Various quests throughout the game make you money and get you priceless material. You will need every bit of it if you plan on reaching the goal: get revenge on the clowns that destroyed your childhood - your life.
Fable rocks but it is not perfect. You get pretty tired of hearing the same things from the townsfolk all the time. Also, I found it pretty easy to beat the last boss on the first try. If you combine the right powers with the right moves, you have a winning stratgey...every time.
It's a great fantasy game for those RPG fans who hate turn-based combat. I just beat the game under the following circumstances:
1. I went into it not knowing a thing about what I was doing or going to do.
2. I played it mostly as a good guy, but sometimes straight down the middle. But only if I thought I'd have a better game for myself if I took a couple of drastic measures, like steal a weapon when I needed one badly.
3. I married three times and nailed my wife over and over again. Sometimes six times a night. NICE.
4. I never aged over 54 years old.
5. I still finished with four more quests to complete but I blew them off. And I'm going back to wipe them up when I get the chance.
6. My favorite powers were FORCE PUSH, GHOST SWORD and RUSH ATTACK.
So...even though I didn't do everything in the game, yet drowned myself in some other things, it all turned out to be very satisfying. I beat it in 24 hours. Finally, I was very annoyed at the fact that even though I went the "good" route at the end, I still continued the game with some extra "bad guy" attributes. No feasible reason why either.
a good rental

I would recommend renting this game. It is a lot of fun for about a week. I got it because it was supposed to be a different game everytime you play. Not true at all. The quests are almost identical whether you are good or evil. The characters in each town are nearly identical and everyone will say the same things to you. It was a blast the first time around. A little too easy, but still entertaining and hard to turn off. I've played it for about an hour since beating it the first time, several months ago. I plan on trading it back in as soon as Forza comes out.
