Funny, well-executed sequel to Super Mario RPG

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

_____Paper Mario's best asset is the hilarious dialogue. Every character has something funny to say, and it just serves to enhance the silliness of the entire game. It also enhances the game playing experience. While the basic plot is typical Mario (rescue princess, stop Bowser), the numerous side quests and exploration will keep you occupied and interested for hours.

_____The Badge system is another innovation; like Final Fantasy VII's materia system, is allows you to customize and personalize your Mario. And because of the variety involved in setting up your badges, it makes for more interesting battles, departing many times from the "attack until enemy is dead" type of combat.

_____If you are an RPG fan and want to step away from big epics like Final Fantasy IX or Phantasy Star Online, then buy this game. It is a look at the lighter side of RPG's.

There is so much to this game!

This is both mine and my five year old daughter's favorite Nintendo 64 game! Object of the game is to save the 7 star spirits who have been captured and locked away by Bowser and his cohorts in the Mushroom Kingdom. With Paper Mario, you finally get to buddy up with all those characters you usually fight in other Mario games. There are so many worlds to explore and so many things to find like star pieces which can be traded in for badges. Badges are what give Mario that edge when he fights in battle. For those who love a lot of action, will not find it here, but for those who love adventure and strategy should really enjoy this game. What I really loved is now I can put a name to all those faces from the Mario games of the past. My daughter and I know every inhabitant in the Mushroom Kingdom! We also finally got to visit Mario and Luigi's house too! The graphics are excellent and the music is perfect and is not like the familiar clunky carnival like tunes of previous Mario games. Despite the two dimenisions of Mario does not distract from the playing experience at all since you can move Mario around in a 3D environment. There is no side scrolling mode of play either since Mario can go just about everywhere. It is really easy to learn to play too as there is a tutorial in the beginning. There you go and meet Goompapa in the Goomba village and he teaches you how to jump, attack and more. The only downside is that once you finish the game, you're finished. Though you could go back and look for more star pieces, but since the star pieces are only for badges there really wouldn't be a point to it. My daughter however, even though we have finished the game, still loves to go to every place on the map and explore areas for fun. This is an excellent game and already has been reviewed at several sites with five star ratings. I sincerely hope they come out with a sequel to this title! It was worth every penny I paid for it. It is so much fun, so involved and quite an addictive adventure!

Paper Mario: A Game That's Worth It!

I know many reviews out there are pretty sappy and drip with constant adoration for the game they so mindlessly praise. I'll say it right now... I am not addicted to this game. I played it, I beat it. But it is the first RPG since Pokemon Yellow that can claim that distinction for me, a career RPG hater. The gameplay is well thought out, and is like a bizarre mix between Pokemon and Zelda. The game has an interesting plot and constantly new twists appear in it. Its turn-based attacking is very reminiscent of Pokemon, and relies much on strategy such as choosing which attacks to use. Both inside and outside the battles, you are in a mostly 2-dimensional world that isn't in any way special, devoid of polygon counts, utterly sans texture-mapping. But you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, as the worlds are well thought out and confusing enough that the game remains diffult while still staying easy enough for my 7-year old sister to beat it. The music is okay, but repetitive in the battle area. There is no way to describe how this game is just a great game, well deserving of a place on the right hand of Zelda, if not above. You will not be sorry to buy this game. :)

Proof of Mario's Superiority

I guess I'll start off by saying that I love this game. It's one of the most enjoyable, refreshing games I've ever played. Don't be fooled by the simplistic appearance - there's more to this game than you might think. It's easily one of the best games in Nintendo's history.

The storyline is nothing special, though it's better than the usual Mario fare: Bowser steals the Star Rod to make himself invincible so Mario can't defeat him. Then he kidnaps the Princess by lifting her castle up out of the ground with his floating fortress. Bowser also has a much bigger role in this game, too. He's no longer that invisible nemesis who isn't seen until the very end of the game; he actually makes quite a few appearances. The game's story sequences are amusing, to say the least.

The player's assignment is to find the Star Spirits - the only ones with the ability to counter-act the Star Rod's power. But Bowser has imprisoned them all on cards (you heard me right) and scattered them across the land. So you'll have to venture across the Mushroom Kingdom and find the missing spirits in order to restore peace to the land. As the game progresses, you can call upon the Star Spirits you've freed and they can help you during combat - much like casting a spell, or summoning.

Paper Mario's 2D graphics are actually really good. I hadn't expected to like the whole "paper" approach as much as I do. Don't dismiss the visuals as primitive - they're really quite refreshing. At least, they were to me.

This is, simply, a fun game to play. It's an RPG, but it also has some platform elements, and the combat features help to keep battles from getting boring. For instance, Mario can swing his hammer while walking around the environment, and if he hits a wandering enemy with the hammer, he gets a "first strike" in combat. He can also jump on an enemy to get a similar effect, though some enemies shouldn't be jumped on (like spiny's). That's something that really makes the adventuring fun.

Mario will also meet up with various partners throughout the game (all of which are renditions of classic Mario baddies, like a goomba, for instance), each with their own attacks. You can also power up your sidekicks if you find the special blocks hidden throughout the game, thus allowing them to learn additional abilities. All of the party members have an ability that they can use at the press of a button to help Mario while roaming about in the game's many environments. Like Parakarry, who can carry Mario across short gaps, or Goombario who can tell you useful information or give you hints at some points.

There are few games that I think deserve 5 stars, but this is definitely one of them. I really enjoyed this game. If you have a Nintendo 64, I highly recommend this game. One of Mario's finest moments.

The Best Game. Ever.

Super Mario RPG was the first RPG I LOVED!

Now, here's a sequel. Sadly, this is nothing like the first! The graphics and battle systems are top notch, yes, but there are only 2 flaws on this game: Too short and too easy. I beat it in a matter of days.

Now for the good stuff! The graphics are well done! I love the paper jokes (I found Kammy Koopa "taped" to the introduction funny). The humor is well done! We have Bowser making me roll, Goombario making wise cracks, and who could forget the adorable, yet annoying, Jr. Troopa?

The music is also top notch. I still find myself humming Kammy Koopa's theme song. Everywhere you go, you notice the music improves the feel of the game.

It's about Luigi and Mario getting a letter from Peach. It's an invitation to her party. So at the castle, Bowser combines his castle with Peach's. Bowser then steals, who else, Peach. Bowser knocks Mario unconsious, and flings him out the window. That's where the adventure begins.

Peach is tremendously useful in this! You actually play her (mostly stealth around the guarded castle, gettin info to help Mario). This game would not be the best game sequel, but it's still the possibly best game for N64.

And good news, Nintendo will be making Super Mario RPG for Gameboy Advance.

Paper Mario is one of the better games I've played on the N-64, combining the thrills and spills of Super Mario Brothers (without all the dying from missed jumps) with the depth of an adventure game. When I saw it I knew that it would be good, but I didn't think it would quite as good as it turned out to be! The interaction, the societal setups that aren't exclusively "good guy" oriented, plus a drove of other features make this a great game.

Here's a few examples of why I liked it:
(1) Storyline. Yes, it actually has a storyline. Mario, for all his said worth, has always been bound in a minimalist storyline that one could easily predict. This isn't to say that Super Mario games aren't fun, but the depth, well, it is less that complete. In this game, however, you find yourself trying to recover seven stars that have been kidnapped by your old buddy, Bowser, so you can defeat his newest form of invulnerability and (of course) save the princess. You reach your goal through fragmented means, running all over the make and conversing, obtaining, playing side games, and so on. To me, following the story and ascertaining why I was beating people down was fun.

(2) Combat Features. The combat is actually powered in a somewhat odd way for Mario. With your "jump" and "hammer" features, you use your attacks on a metered system, inflicting damage to people's "heart ponts" while doing so. You are also rewarded with a "perfect hit" on your meter (easy mastered after a little practice) by double damage and so on.

(2) Abilities. Your abilities are determined by a number of things like items, but your basic setup is determined by three statistics. Your health, of course, is his "heart power," his ability to use specialized moves comes from his "flower points," and his ability to obtain specialized moves/defenses comes from his ability to collect numerically coded badges ruled by badge points. You can further your offensive/defensive capabilities by collecting "star points," something that all enemies give and tougher enemies give in droves, allowing you to modify your health, your "flower points," and your "badge points." Gain one hundred of these puppies and you level up.

(3) Allies. In this game, you get to carry around a drove of allies. They all have specialized moves that they can use for free (some on a metered attack scale, too), plus others that feed on your "flower points." As the game progresses, you have a chance to pick up more and more of these useful little guys, not to mention level them up. They are, in a word, lifesaving.

(4) Help. Some people get lost in "adventure" games and need a helping hand. Well, Paper Mario provides a character for exactly that purpose. Pay the man 5gp, a minuscule sum, and he'll "read your future" and tell you where to go. A spoiler, to be sure, but a useful one at that.

Anyhow, this is just a brief overview of the great features contained therein and leaves out all sorts of useful quips that you should try out for yourself. If you like Mario you'll love this, and if you don't you'll still love it. I highly recommend it to anyone.

This isn't just a kiddie game, it's very deep

Paper Mario is not a kid's game. Well, it's actually for all ages, from 6 to 106. It is extremely deep, with challenges, letters to deliver, many towns to visit, dojos to go to, etc. Even though it's not developed by Squaresoft like the original (Super Mario RPG), it still delivers an exciting quest. This is very very addicting, and will have you saying, "Just a little more" every five minutes. While I'm not exactly fond of the paper look, it is a clever way to get rid of the N64 blur effect. If you're wanting to experience the only great RPG on the N64, look no further. Buy now.

ADDICTIVE GAME some spots are slow

This game is addictive!!Don't intend to just play it for a few minutes. With great battle scenes and good replay value this game is great. Don't worry about the graphics, they don't matter. this is the first game of it's kind for the Nintendo. Some spots are funny some spots are sad. The only thing I have a problem with is you can't save after you beat bowser for the last time.So what I did is I left Bowser's castle and I went back to Toad town and did errands and got all the star pieces and the badges. Then i bet bowser.easy to learn and easy to execute gameplay makes this game great for smaller kids. The side quests are sometimes more difficult then the main game itself. Ispent 2 hours trying to find the Yoshi kids! Too bad there's no multiplayer. Here are some tips I found out:On plesant path,if you run around one of the candycanes in that group of three of them it will play origanal mario music and give you hearts. In Boo's Mansion if you jump inside the big pot in the room with the rocking chair you'll come out looking like first mario with the first mario music. But you have to stay in that room. have fun playing!!

I love this game!

I think that this game is so awesome, I had courage and confidence in myself, that I beat it in 2 months and 3 days! I like the bosses. They are challenging, and some of them were easy. Especially Tutankoopa and the Koopa Bros. But there is only one problem about the game...J.R Koopa! That kid wants to fight Mario, but there is no way he can beat him! I really love this game so much! If you say it's a 4 in a half...you're just playin' around. Well, I think I'm going to play it right now! No N64 game has ever did like Mario. I might not be able to beat him up, even though I'm 11! Bye!
P.S. Lets come out with Paper Mario 2: Bowsers creator
