Mario Party succeeds where many other RPGs (read: Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX...) fail; this game provides an excellent storyline, wonderful (albeit 2-D and 'stylistic' via the title) graphics, and a combat system that does not get old as the game progresses.
Okay, maybe the storyline is something that we've already encountered since Mario's early days on the NES. However, the cast of new characters that he engages, as well as the old favorites, add much needed spice to the game and make it a joy to play. We all know how the story in this game ends and begins--but it is everything in between that will keep you on your toes.
Frankly, if you think Mario is too cute for your taste, then go ahead and play your ... PS2 or Dreamcast. However, do not let your misguided views keep the rest of us from playing one of the best RPGs on the market.

I was a bit skeptical about yet another Mario game, but after reading tons of great reviews I bought it and tried it out. I mean it when I say that Paper Mario is the best game I have played in a LONG, LONG time... and I'm sad that I finished it. It has action, adventure, the classic Mario (though he's now 2D paper-thin) plus a bunch of newcomers, and a plot to keep you playing till the end. It took me 2 weeks to finish this game without a player's guide, and I'm no hardcore game, so that goes to show that it's pretty easy to beat this game (as long as you can read, there is tons of dialogue). All the clues are pretty much put right in front of you-- no time will be spent banging your head against a wall after been stuck in the same place for weeks.
SUMMARY:
(PLOT): Evil King Bowser steals the "star rod" from the all-powerful Star Spirits, then rudely interrupts Princess Peach's party, beats Mario, kidnaps the Princess and the party guests, and keeps the Star Spirits captive places scattered all over Mushroom Kingdom. Mario's mission is to rescue the star spirits, then beat Bowser and get back the star rod, therefore releasing the Princess and all the prisoners.
(CHARACTERS): Mario's back, and this time he is travelling around different worlds (Koopa Village, Dry Dry Desert, The Toy Box, Toad Town, Flower Fields, Rugged Mountain) with a party of people he picks up along the way to help him. There are tons of new characters (like Mario's friend, Goombario, and Bowser's evil helper, Kammy Koopa), and they all have individual powers to help Mario beat enemies (such as Shell-Toss, Power-Bomb and Electro-Dash).
(ATTACKS): Attacks are timed, which lets you slow down the pace and think out your strategy. Mario can jump & use a hammer, use one of his friends' powers, or use items he buys in a store (such as Lightning, Dizzy Dial, Mushroom, Honey Jar). When he rescues a star, it gives him some "star power" that he can use during battles as well. Mario has HP (Heart Power, his amount of energy), FP (Flower Power, or "Magic" Power), and BP (Badge Power, so that you can use more Badges that can aid you during battle.)
Overall, Paper Mario is a very enjoyable game. It retains some of the charm of Super-Nintendo Mario games, yet with a 3D background, some new characters and better gameplay. Although some people may be turned off by the cartoony look, I think that everybody can find a reason to like this game. It's definitely Must-Buy for ANY N64 owner.

Anyone who badly rated this game should be flattened. Maybe someone could pound them with a Super Hammer to set them straight.
Seriously, as to what I think, this game is excellent. True, it may not be 3-D, or it may not be like the origonal Super Mario RPG, but it's full of highly addictive game play. Once you start, you won't be able to stop. Not only that, but this game is not, by any means, hard. Any kid can pick up on this game and master gameplay in minutes, or seconds.
Ok, here's the lowdown. Mario is at a party at Princess Peach's castle. Everything's going well until you find that Bowser has stolen the Star Rod, an ancient, wish and power granting tresure from Star Haven, and he's captured the Star Spirits, the guardians of the Haven. He's used the Star Rod to make himself practically invincible. Suddenly the Castle rises in the air, lifted by Bowser's new fortress. Bowser has taken over the castle and defeats Mario with his new powers. Upon reviving, Mario knows he must save the Princess, and he soon learns about the overall importance of his quest, to save the Star Spirits, to defeat Bowser, to save Princess Toadstool, and indeed Mario's World.
Buy this game, and prepare for a journey with battles, new allies, new enemies, puzzles, surprises, and a whole lot more. However, you don't have to take my word for it. If you're a Mario or Nintendo fan, or if you're just seeking a nice, fun, humorous, and action packed adventure game, then you have to buy, or at least rent, Paper Mario. Trust me. It's worth it.
This game is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first heard of this game, I wasn't very impressed. The reasons being, that I am a shooter and adventure buff and I am not usually interested in an RPG. I usually find them boring. I also saw the graphics and thought that they would hurt the gameplay by not giving a very good visual presentation, thus making the game less fun. But, anyway, I went to my nearest Blockbuster just so I could prove my original thoughts. I was totally wrong!!! I have had this game for not even 2 days, and I am amazed by this game. Even, my old favourite, Perfect Dark can't measure up to this outstanding game. It was nothing like playing any other RPG's. I was totally addicted to it. I've had the game for barely 2 days and I have a total of 8 hours playing!!!! It features a wonderfully immersive storyline with many characters and objectives to complete. The battles were almost like Pokemon Stadium, a game that I hate by the way. But, they were still fun and addictive. Some people complain about the amount of talking but I think that this just draws you into the game's story more. The music is good, although it may become a bit repetitive at times. The game has some new music, but also some of the oldschool stuff that all Mario fans know and love. The sound effects are just as good too. The controls are extremely easy to learn but don't limit the movement of Mario or other characters. The graphics are a new breakthrough for all games. The paper look against the 3D backrounds just makes the game look extremely cool. The only complaint I have is that there are only captions and no actual voices. But, it doesn't affect the game. Anyway, this is my favourite game right now and I think that anyone with an N64 should try this game, and if you don't, go to a friends house and try it. People 10 and up could probably squeeze the most fun out of this game, but that's only because of the amount of reading that this game entails. Anyway, this is the best game for N64 and this is a must have for any gamer. Or, at least a rent or two. So, even if you hate RPG's, give Paper Mario a try, it's one of, if not Nintendo's best gaming accomplishment.
It's worth it

I was also a bit reluctant to buy this game. When the reviews came out, calling it Mario RPG 2, many fans (including myself) were upset that it used 2D characters and looked like a story book. I must admit, however, that after playing for several hours it is definatly worth it. Although the characters are flat it is still an obvious sequel to Mario RPG.
The battle system is somewhat similar but also different. In this game you can only choose one character to help you at a time and they do not have hit points but everyone uses the same FP. Meaning if Mario dies the game is over and your FP can run out quick. All the support characters do is aid with special attacks or abilities. This simplistic way of doing things is a nice break from the more complex, hard to get used to, RPGs of today. Mario's HP being only 10 at the beginning is made up for by most attacks only doing 1 to 2 points of damage, but likewise most healing items only heal 5 to 10 points at the beginning so there is still quite a challenge. Since your support characters have no HP you do not have to worry about them dying or having to heal them which is good because you cannot carry any more than 10 items. You must choose your items carefully. This also adds a good deal of strategy when fighting enemies. You can also switch your other party member during battle if you find you need a different character's attack to defeat an enemy. Something that you cannot do in most RPGs.
To sum up, this is a great game for anyone who wants a break from the usual RPG or anyone who liked Mario RPG. It's easy to catch on and fun to play.
Great RPG fun for all ages, with a few quirks

Anything with the name Mario on it tends to have the golden touch. Just look at Mario 64, one of the classics on the N64 and still an incredibly playable game. Super Smash Brothers was another Mario game that was amazingly fun.
Mario Paper is more like an RPG/arcade combination. It lets Mario take on other characters to join his team, and rotate between them to choose his current companion. He picks up different weapons and items, each altering his combat techniques.
Like Final Fantasy and other RPG games, it also gives you some degree of customization over Mario as he gains level in combat. You can increase his 'magic' (flower power) or his 'constition' (heart power). You can collect badges as you go, each giving you different strengths. You can manage which badge combinations you activate, giving you interesting pairings of power.
Gameplay is much like any other N64 RPG. You go from town to town, killing bad guys as you go and talking to every friendly person that you meet. People give you clues about where to go and what to do.
On the downside, for a RPG it's extremely linear - you can't go through X door until you talk to Y person and get your hands on Z object. You have to do things in a certain order even if logically that wouldn't be true.
Also, the Peach character bugs me a lot. She could try to resist when she's captured, but instead she sits and whines that SOMEONE has to come rescue her. No thought about doing anything for herself ...
Fighting is both good and bad. The first fight is exceptionally annoying, because you get thrown into it with only one ability. Even if you do that the best that you can, you still get beaten and look like you've "died". This will probably be really frustrating to first time players, especially younger ones.
In general though it works reasonably well. It's turn based, so slower players won't feel rushed in making their choices. It's pretty straightforward - the options are all laid out right in front of you. You have to learn which things work on which characters, and the complexity builds slowly as you go.
Definitely a game we'll play through at this house, and one I'd buy for my gaming friends, but it's a shame they didn't put just a bit more effort into player-testing it before releasing it.

Paper Mario is a example of true gaming genius. Yes, once again those geniuses at nintendo have come out with a great new product. Our hero, the greatest plumber ever known, mario, is one a quest to save princess toadstool from the evil bowser. You are of course paper but mario being 2d, interacts with a totally 3d world this may seem complicated but walking and speaking with other charators is simple. Using truly unique attacks a wide variety of items and a little freindly backup from his pint sized sidekick mario must travel across a land filled with magic and loaded with strange characters. To fulfill his quest you accomlish great deeds and learn to use spells or fight using your fists. Ulike some Rpgs you can contribute to the battles by adding a few well place button taps which really keeps you interested in the battles ulike some turn base rpgs. This game is great for beginning Rpg gamers and is still a great buy for experinced players. I thought Paper Mario was a great game and will keep gamers guessing for hours and hours!

If Mario stars in a game, it's guaranteed to be great, and that is just what this sequel to Super Mario RPG is. As far as RPGs go, Paper Mario is no Final Fantasy, but that doesn't mean it isn't any good. It's true that it isn't very difficult, but it isn't that easy either. And it won't take you as long to finish as the Final Fantasies, but it should keep your interest and have you wearing a smile most of the time.
The characters that join Mario in Paper Mario are one of the highlights of the game. Of course, they aren't deeply developed, each with his or her own story, but they are all unique in the various abilities that they use to aid Mario. Mario can use Bombette, a girl Bob-omb, to blow up cracked walls; Sushie the Cheep Cheep to travel across water; Goombario, a Mario fanatic Goomba, to tell him about people and places; and so on. These characters can also help Mario during battles, but more on that later.
Same as in Super Mario RPG, Mario enters into a battle screen after touching an enemy on the world screen. In this way Mario can avoid repetitive battles by simply avoiding enemies. (Chrono Cross is another good example of this battle entry system.) Also, if Mario touches an enemy with an attack (e.g. jumps on it), he'll enter that battle getting off an extra attack. Battles are fun and strategic. Just as in Super Mario RPG, attacks can cause greater damage with the accurate timing of button pushes on your controller. If you press the "A" button just before Mario jump-attacks an enemy, he'll attack again. That's the fun part. The strategic part, which is also fun, comes in the two types of attacks that Mario can perform: jump attacks and hammer attacks. With jumps, Mario can attack any enemies on the ground or in mid-air, while with the hammer he can only attack a creature that is on the ground and at the front rank of the enemy army. But he won't want to jump on an enemy that has spikes or is enveloped with fire, so that is when the hammer comes in handy. Mario's companions can also help in battles with their own unique attacks, though only one character is allowed to participate at a time. Bombette, for instance, can explode to cause a large amount of damage on the front ground enemy, while Goombario can use a headbutt to cause minimal damage on any enemy. Later in the game, Mario's companions will learn various other attacks.
At the end of battles Mario will usually recieve "Star Points" (Experience Points). Once he collects 100 of these points, he will go up a level. It is at this time that you are allowed to customize Mario a bit. You can choose to increase his "Heart Points" (Hit Points), "Flower Points" (Magic Points), or "Badge Points." "Badge Points" are used to equip Badges which give Mario special attacks or other powers, such as the ability to jump-attack spiked enemies. Equipping Badges is simple (it is similar to the way you equip "Support Abilities" in Final Fantasy IX). Say Mario has 3 "Badge Points" and the Badges "Power Jump" (makes Mario jump-attack an enemy and cause more damage) and "HP Plus" (gives Mario an extra 5 "Heart Points"). Since the first Badge takes 1 BP, and the latter takes 3, Mario can, of course, only equip one or the other. But don't worry: any time you wish you can remove a Badge and get back its BP so that you can customize Mario differently with different Badges. (Wait! That's IDENTICAL to Final Fantasy IX.)
In Paper Mario, Mario will eventually get "Star Power," which he can use to summon the Star Spirits. These Spirits will perform powerful magic that will aid Mario, such as restoring both his HP and FP at the same time or damaging all enemies with shooting stars. But the "Star Power" will have to recharge after each summoning, and that can take time. That is why Mario is allowed to "Focus," which simply fills up his "Star Power" gauge more quickly (think Skies of Arcadia's "Spirit Point" system).
Paper Mario is better than I had expected, and I truly give it 4 1/2 stars. The only bad parts of the game are some boring activities such as delivering letters. All you do is go to one person, deliver a letter, get another letter to deliver, go to another person, deliver a letter, get yet another letter to deliver...This wouldn't be so bad if you got some great item in return, but it just isn't worth it for the occasional lame gift you receive. Not all the activities are that bad though; there is a quiz game that asks you various questions about the world of Paper Mario, such as, "How many windows were on that house?" or, "What color pants was that character wearing?" Still, Paper Mario's games aren't as fun as the ones found in Super Mario RPG. But if you put that aside, Paper Mario's fun, interactive battles and its unique characters should keep you happy.
