I remember a few years ago reading about this game in my Nintendo Power magazine. I got really excited when I heard about a sequel to Super Mario RPG. But when I looked at the screen shots, the game looked almost pathetic. With the flat, barely animated characters and fuzzy backgrounds, it looked like a game for little kids. But I was wrong. The game is lots of fun. There is much to enjoy about it. A good story, and all the places to go and side-quests to go on (a bit too many actually) make the game better. The game isn't that hard though. There are many people to talk to and a lot of different characters in your party, from a smart, spunky Goomba, a cute lightning guy, and a Lakitu.
The graphics aren't that of a normal game, but that is why it's called Paper Mario. The music is very annoying. Where did Koji Kondo go?

Eight years ago when Super Mario World was released, Nintendo boasted of its 3D appearance. Nintendo has since worked hard to build games and a new system to have good 3D games. Super Mario RPG was one of the last games for Super Nintendo, and in my opinion, one of the best. Paper Mario was supposed to be Super Mario RPG 2. I thought that if there was a sequal to Super Mario RPG on the N64, that the graphics would be great and the game would be twice as good as the original. I was sharply wrong. The game is not bad. The graphicss "aren't bad", the battle system is good, and the plot is ok. But this isn't what I expect from Nintendo to do with its staple character. The idea of putting 2D characters in a 3D enviroment smacks of lack of effort Nintendo could have put much more effort into the graphics considering Mario is in it. I guess if we want good graphics in a mario game, we should look at one made 5 years ago, Super Mario 64. Paper Mario does have an interesting battle system that adds a little challenge. The music is good. Overall, the game is worth playing, but maybe not buying. If you are under 12, it is worth buying. If you are looking for a Mario game with good graphics and a classic feel, i guess we may have to wait for Super Mario 64 2, assuming they put effort in that game, too.
One of the Best Mario Games Ever!!!!

A couple months ago when I heard that another Mario game would be coming out soon, I had just finished playing Mario 64. I thought it would just be another Mario 64 with a new story. I was extremely wrong. This game is a lot different than Mario 64, or any other Mario game. It's more like a Zelda game, except more immature than Zelda. The story of this game is pretty similar to any other Mario Game: There's a place called Star Haven, where seven stars with power live and there's this treasure called the Star Rod which has the power to grant all wishes. Then Bowser steals the Star Rod and imprisones the seven stars in all different places. Mario must travel to all these places and seek out the seven stars. True, the game is in 2D instead of 3D, and you can't walk around every corner or take a close look at everything you want, but it really doesn't take away the overall "fun-ness" of the game. Paper Mario's got pretty good graphics, great music (you can easily tell it's a mario game by just hearing the music), it never bores you, and you'll almost never get frustrated! The game isn't all that challenging, and it's kind of on the easy side. If there was a rating between 1-5, 5 being most challenging and 1 being easiest, I'd give it a 2.5. There are many items to look for all over the game (such as star pieces, badges, letters, etc). At first I was a little disappointed with the battle style of Paper Mario, but I got used to it. It's a stragetic kind of battle as oppposed to the traditional Mario-style fighting where you jump on the enemy's head. You have to choose the next move you'll make such as jump, hit the enemy with a hammer, or star power. In the game you will start out weak and with a low HP of 10. As the game goes on, you will become more powerful, gain more skills, and go up levels (after you gain 100 star points from fighting enemies you'll go up a level.) You have a choice of upgrading your HP (heart points), FP (flower points), or BP (badge points). Upgrading your HP will give you more life and harder to kill during battles, FP will allow you to do more special powers, and BP will allow you to wear more badges. Badges allow for you to have special powers. I haven't even finished the game yet, in fact I don't think I'm even half done with it yet. I've played it for 14 hours now, and I'm on level 8 or 9 -I tend to fight a lot so other gamers might not be this high in level after 14 hours. The game will actually tell you how long you've been playing it, it's pretty cool. The thing I have the most fun with is going to all the different towns and solving people's problems, for example in Koopa Village there's this one elder Koopa who asks you for a million favors and usually gives you only one coin in return! Also in Koopa Village you have to solve the problem of the "fuzzy attack" -the fuzzies are stealing the Koopas' shells! All in all the game is extremely addictive and I've played it for hours at a time! I recommend this game to everyone, except some adults might find it a bit kiddish and easy. Get this game -I swear you won't be disappointed, especially if you're a mario fan and you know the story so far!
Great Game. Except for the pokemon-like battle sequence.

Paper Mario is a great game. The only drawback is the pokemon-like battle sequence. Besides that though, paper mario has a lot to offer. It is a very long game, it has many characters and towns, and lot's of action, adventure, and paper. I would have given it a 4 1/2 star rating. but that wasn't an option. Even though it has the pokemon-like battles, i would still recommend that you .... ... buy it. It will last you a long time.

I will give it a 5 because it is too awesome. I can't stop playing it. I am almost done with the game. It's so cool when you go in the Koopa Bros. Fortress. That's all I'm Telling ya. Now I am going to play it right now.
Take Super Mario RPG, dumb it down ten grade levels...

That about states it. Paper Mario, the highly anticipated sequel to Super Mario RPG for SNES, turned out to be a nice diversion for a weekend rental.
Let's back up a second. I played Super Mario RPG back when SNES was still cool, and loved every second of it: not just the Mario characters, but the battle system, the platforming action, and the weird sense of humor. Obviously, when this game was first announced as SMRPG2, I wanted to play it as well. Then I rented it from the local game rental store, and beat it in a weekend. That's silly. By comparison, I didn't beat SMRPG until the third time I rented it. This tells me something about the difficulty, something that I had already begun to see by the game itself.
First of all, the gameplay. The battle system is far too simplified. Rather than focusing on strategic use of equipment, the focus here is on the battle itself and your ability to hit a button at exactly the right time. The helper system reminds me strongly of Pokemon, which is a bad thing. And, most displeasing of all (for some odd reason), no one in the game has more than 99 HP. Note to future game developers: bigger numbers are better. The damage formula is seriously unbalanced, with no possibility of a random element in battle.
The story itself is fairly standard fare: collect 7 special thingies (in this case, Star Pieces) and use them to beat up some big evil dude (in this case, Bowser). The Star Pieces take a decent amount of time to get in some cases, although some of them simply resort to spending more time walking through long sidescrolling areas. It's also about as linear as you can get, since there's no provision for doing things out of order.
The graphics don't bother me much; graphics don't make a game. The gameplay does, and Paper Mario seriously lacks it. I suppose it's great for little kids with short attention spans and/or less developed puzzle-solving skills, but as for me, I'm sticking with the SNES classic.

Ok, first of all, graphics? they're horrible, sound? nope, music? well i guess if you like listening to a music box for hours on end. The whole 2-d in a 3D world is just plain garbage. It's an excuse for horrible horrible graphics. Nintendo is a piece of cr@p company now. How dare they call this Mario RPG 2? Mario Rpg was made by SQUARESOFT, and if nintendo hadn't made so many stupid decisions(the n64 not using CD's ) squaresoft would still be working for them, and the n64 wouldn't be so childish and terrible. Mario had his day, and he should've been retired after mario kart 64, so he could keep some dignity.

This game was one of the most boring games ever. Okay so it kept me aware enough so that I would try to beat it but you never had to take your time, all of the bosses were almost impossible to lose to, most of the characters were never used and I beat the game within a week. If you want a good RPG don't get this unless you like to beat games instead of enjoying there graphics (this game had almost none). The story line was just like every other Mario game every rescue the princess. Just get another game unless you love Mario or you don't have enough money. Or you can just rent the game for a couple of days and beat it.
