any game this advanced should at least have the option to configure the controller any way you like it. the game only gives the ability to invert the camera. what fun is a game if you are unable to control it the way you like??

Im 30 mts into the game, and the game will only allow me to play the way it wants me to play. I approach this guy 10 times as I try to take him out without a gun. Everytime he turns around no matter what he is doing. What kind of ... game is this?

This is probly the worse game i've ever seen. Even extending to games on other consoles, this is the worse. I looked highly upon this game until I actualy played it. This game is just no fun to play. Metal Gear Solid is such a better game (I got both games at the same time and I played MGS much more then Splinter cell). If you still insist on buying this game atleast get it at a place where you can return it. Just to make sure...
Oh yeah, one last thing. The only thing that I really liked in the game was the lighting effects. Those were great.
THIS IS TERRIBLE!

This is the worst game i have played. I have the game and i was hoping to be impressed. no way! The graphics may be good but you dont go around shooting people! If you are surrounded by 5 guys your gonna die because all you have is a lousy pistol! the pistol is the only stupid gun that you can use to kill enemies. And half the time its used, i run out of ammo!
Please if you must do not get this game!

WAY TOO UNREALISTIC. YOU READ ALL REVIEWS AND EVERYONE LOVES IT. THE CONTROL IS BAD AND THE GAME ISN'T MUCH FUN. IF YOU LIKE GOOD LOOKING GAMES AND NOTHING ELSE THIS IS YOUR GAME.
The demo is horrible. Very horrible.

Cumbersome, awkward controls. Stiff, robotic and unnatural animation. Sub-par graphic design. It reminded me of a 3rd person version of the 1997 N64 game Goldeneye, more than anything else. I read a comment in 'The Official Xbox Magazine' in their review of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 2- Substance: "It's good, but it's no Splinter Cell." I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. They're acutally 100% correct, but not in the way they meant it. The demo made it painfully obvious that Splinter Cell isn't worthy to scrape the grime from under MGS's toenails. If you want to play a quality stealth/action game, skip this weak attempt and go for the King of the Genre, MGS.

REMEMBER PERFECT DARK FOR N64? I STILL HAVE IT AND IT MY FAV. GAME ON N64. WHY AM I COMPARING PERFECT DARK TO SPLINTER CELL? WELL, TO ME SPLINTER CELL SOUNDS A LIL BIT LIKE PERFECT DARK. AND I WOULD LOVE TO FIND OUT THAT TOM CLANCY AND RARE ARE OR WOULD CONSIDER WORKING ON A SEQUEL FEATURING JOANNA DARK AND SAM FISHER. IF THEY WOULD THEY SHOULD MAKE IT SO YOU CAN SWITCH BACK AND FORTH ON THE FLY JUST LIKE IN RESIDENT EVIL ZERO AND MAKE THE ENVIROMENTS AND WORLDS LIKE THEY WERE WITH ELDER SCROLLS 3 AND MAKE THE GRAPHICS ENGINE BASED ON DEAD OR ALIVE 3. THIS IS MY DREAM GAME FROM TOM CLANCY AND RARE. I HOPE THEY THINK ABOUT THIS IDEA. HOW COOL WOULD IT BE IF THEY DID MAKE THIS GAME?????
BORING!!!!!

If you like playing a game for months and months and then find yourself only halfway through it, then this is the game for you. This game is very difficult and can get very boring. One down fall to it is that there isn't a first person view. The only time you use it is when you are aiming your weapon and then you move very slow. Also, the story line is very boring and doesn't keep you hooked at all. Another thing is that there is only one weapon in the entire game, which is a silenced pistol. You only start out with 40 bullets and you rarely find any ammo along the way. What really bugs me is that when I played it it took 5 or 6 shots to kill somebody and you don't have much ammo to begin with. If you are looking for an exciting espionage game I would recommend Metal Gear Solid 2 over Splinter Cell any day. If you are curious about playing Splinter Cell I would definitely recommend renting it before you waste your money on buying it.

Splinter Cell has you playing in a third person point of view, as a secret agent named, Sam Fisher. You work for a secret government agency called Third Echelon, who help in the retrieval of secret information and deal with terrorists and corrupt politicians. They send you to certain objectives, like getting a file, or hacking into computers, scaring information out of hostages and the sort. To get to these objectives is the tricky parts as they are heavily guarded by soldiers, body gaurds or even policemen. The artificial intelligence is rather good; they respond if you make a sound or if they see your shadow, but the fun part of the game is playing with their responses. You can throw a bottle to distract them then run in another direction. You could let them see you for a second, then hide in the darkness- they get confused. Being unseen however is your best defense. The game is all about stealth. You use shadows and darkness to hide, you can also perform many acrobatic moves to help you hide. You can crouch, roll, lean on walls, peak around corners, you can split jump (inspired by actor Jean Claude Van Damme). You have many gadgets to spy on your enemies and you'll also be equipped with a silencer pistol. My only complaints about the game is that it is 100% linear, allowing no flexibilty or freeform gameplay. You just have to do things the way the level is scripted (or get a mission fail). I also thought it was very unrealistic and absurd to send a secret agent armed only with a pistol and few rounds of ammo! The graphics are amazing and the character animation move like real people!
Pros:
+excellent graphics
+excellent sound
+excellent controls
+excellent voice-acting
+cool gadgets
+cool acrobatic moves
+good music
+challanging missions
+good artificial intelligence
+good gameplay mechanics
+life-like animation
+makes you think
Cons:
-100% linear gameplay
-level check points are far apart
-limited weapons and ammo
-single player game
-no replay value
-WAY too much stealth
Rent it. If you like it buy it.

Having played video games my entire life (starting with the ZX Spectrum), I feel that perhaps I have a rather definitive concept on what makes a good video game. Sure Splinter Cell has pretty good graphics. Unfortunately the game is let down by the lack of cohesion and one quickly gets bogged down, losing the bigger picture and sneaking around for hours. Skill does not factor in the game. The story line is boring and takes second place leaving you unmotivated and on the whole uncaring. In an attempt to simulate reality, the games weapons function rather realistically, the only problem arising is that shooting bad guys just plain isnt fun. You get very little ammo, obviously in an attempt to encourage stealth rather than wanton killing. The game has some rather endearing aspects such as the lockpick which offer some initial excitement and thrill which, however rapidly wear out. The camera angle which everyone raves about is thoroughly adequate and yet depressingly simple. Giving a fixed third person perspective gets old after a while and I found myself longing for the thrill and sense of espionage evoked in manipulating the camera angles in Metal Gear Solid 2.
Bottom Line: This game offers a semi-realistic sense of gameplay and has an initial appeal. Unfortunately, the mediocre story and monotony leave you wanting more.
