Well balanced RPG for gamers of all types

Before I got KOTOR, I wasn't sure what I was getting into. Sure, there were reviews on IGN and GameSpot hailing this game with 9.x ratings, but I had a feeling this game was going to be something unique due to a combination of a great game developer (Bioware) and a universe that many people know and love (Star Wars). Little did I know that I was going to be in for a BIG suprise.

After playing the game, I could not put the controller down. Even though the game spanned at least 40+ hours of gameplay, the experience was so great that it was unnoticeable. The game had vast enviroments with reconizable places to go and you get exposed to various aspects of the SW universe from the creatures, weapons, and philosophy of the Force.

What I believe was the biggest draw of this game was how it viewed the Force. In the movies with the mainstream audience, it was viewed as a hokey religion where it was either associated with Yoda or Darth Vader sayings. Nothing too serious, but kinda degrading for the avid Star Wars fan. KOTOR definately changed my view of the Force from playing it.

How did it you may ask? The concept of the Force in KOTOR takes it much more serious and the gamer learns more about what it is than all the movies combined. In return you respect it more. I am not going to give away elements of the game, but the use of the Force in the game is much more spiritual and once you learn what it really is, your decisions in what you do not only question your game actions, your own actions as an individual.

Great game, lots of fun, and engrossing storyline make this the best Star Wars game yet!

A classic

Anyone who enjoyed Baldur's Gate, or who enjoys computer RPGs in general, might enjoy this game. It helps if you think Star Wars is cool.

The XBOX version, sadly, does not contain the expanded material available to the PC version of the game. Even so, I find the game much, much more playable on the XBOX.

The voice-acting on this game is really, really good. The considerable talents of Jennifer Hale, Raphael Sbarge, Kevin Michael Richardson, Ed Asner, Cat Taber, and Rafael Ferrer make it a near-cinematic experience; and Kristoffer Tabori's turn as HK-37 is dang near the best voice-acting I have ever heard in a video game.

A must-have for any Star Wars or computer RPG fan.

Knights of the Old Republic is the new Star Wars Themed RPG developed by the collaboration of both LucasArts and Bioware. Since I am a Star Wars fan, I've always wanted a game whose immersive experience reflects the ingenuity of the saga. To my dismay however, only until recently have a found a true Star Wars game that has exceeded well above my expectations. KOTOR in short is nothing but sheer brilliance. After buying, playing through, and beating this game, it is almost impossible to describe and review such an amazing experience. These are my opinions on the game:

Presentation/Style: 9.5/10
KOTOR is the best Star Wars game to date. Period. If your an avid fan like myself or you still enjoy a great RPG experience, KOTOR is your game. But even still if you don't meet this categories, KOTOR has something for everyone. It truly will not disappoint.

Graphics: 9.5/10
There tend to be minor framerate issues during the game but in no way does it significantly effect gameplay. Character models, vehicles, and environments are visually stunning and leave the player in awe.

Sound Effects/Character Voices/Music: 10/10
By far the best character voices in the history of video games. Music is indigenous to the Star Wars saga, while sound effects are beautifully experienced in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

Gameplay: 10/10
The gameplay in KOTOR is heavily reliant one 2 main factors. First of which is your actions and battles when in combat. Second however is the communication aspect with several NPCs (Non-Playable Characters). What you say to these NPCs reflects how the game is played. For instance, in the beginning of the game a common man is being harassed by bounty hunters for his late payment to the crime boss Davik. When you witness this event, you have a choice. Do you pay the 200 credits he owes? Do you kill the bounty hunters? Do you let the man be killed by the bounty hunters? Do you ignore the situation, and look the other way? You have all these choices in just this one simple scenario. These dilemmas are continually encountered, and as the game progresses, the situations and options become harder to solve and decipher. By your actions, you shape your character. Doing the right thing will get you light side points. But doing the evil or sinister act, will lead you closer to the dark side. It is your power to choose which way you want to go. Playing the game and focusing you efforts towards either the light or dark side, leaves for 2 totally different experiences.

Now, taking a closer look at the combat portion of KOTOR:
By using all of the force powers given to you (over 40) and several various weapons (lightsaber, blaster pistol, etc), progressing through each combat sequence satisfies the player and is genuinely fun. Up to three people (out of the total 9) may make up you group. The various companions you are given include: a Wookie, Driods, Soldiers, Other Jedi, and much more.

Length: 9.5/10
This game takes a good 35-40 hours to beat. You will visit 7 different Star Wars planets in your journey and several ships (Ebon Hawk, etc.). Prepare to lose sleep of this game because once you begin, you won't want to stop.

Story: 10/10
I don't want to give anything away in focusing on the story of the game, so all I will say is this:
KOTOR has the best story I've ever seen in a game.

Lasting Effect: 10/10
With several mini-games (swoop bike racing, Pazaak, and much more) and future downloadable content, KOTOR can be played over and over again with a different experience each time.

Overall: 9.7/10
This game is the best Single-Player experience out for the Xbox right now. It surely makes my list of the 10 best games of all time. Buy it right now if you haven't already, you won't be disappointed.

Bioware strikes back.
I am really impressed with KOTOR. I love the Fallout and BG series but I was concerned that Bioware might sell out on their first 'big console' release. The dark side is easier and more rewarding after all. But, I am glad that I was wrong. KOTOR retains a lot of the ingenuity and insight that only Bioware (and Looking Glass) can pull off.

This one plays out like a cosmic morality play; it has a very interesting and insightful method of keeping score. You are awarded dark side points for being amoral and you get light side points for being 'moral'. These points affect you appearance and the amount of hurt mixed into your jedi bag of tricks. It is easier, cheaper, and more fun to be bad--but you do actually feel bad sometimes for being bad.

Star Wars is always fun and this game treats the Galaxy Far Away with scholarly rigor that some of you will probably love.

I hate 3 edition D&D rules; I think they are very unintuitive and robotic, but I have to confess that they work very, very well in this game. The feat/combat feature lets you feel like you are controlling the mechanics of your combat rather than just munching chips while your Jedi spins around like an epilectic at a rave. I think they (the rules, not the epilectic) are better suited for KOTOR than they are for D&D (Neverfun Nights, for example).

KOTOR has a steep learning curve, which is not helped by the limits of the console interface and an incomplete manual, but after an hour or so you should be squared away.

This game is great for anyone who loves RPGs that are smarter than you, micromanaging character development, nods to Nietzsche, melodrama, wookies, and/or wasting summer days indoors.

This game is one of the coolest games I've ever played. It has a few slow spots, but it should come with a warning label: Caution very addictive. You can get lost in the game and before you realize 4-5 hours have gone by. I would recommend this game to anyone. If your a fan of Star Wars or RPGs you'll love this one.

but KOTOR deserves it. First off, my XBOX is connected to my large screen TV and 5.1 surround sound home theater, so the effects of the game is very good.

As an RPG the story line and voices done by the actors is great. I plan on doing both Light and Dark, and I'm starting in the light. I've played other RPG and many of them have 'dumb' quests: get item, bring to person. Some of the KOTOR quests are similar, but almost all involve a twist or two that keep the game fresh. The Star Wars graphics look great and the music just blends well with the game. The corny factor is also at a minimum and some of the lines are actually funny.

The only cons I have is I'd rather go for a real-time combat system, where the player can actually interact with the combat. Also, I wish that character models had more variety. You end up seing the same people over and over and over.

But all-in-all, a great and addicting game.

Damn! This game should have a surgeon general warning for addiction on it!
The other minor problem that this game has is a bit of an odd control scheme, but once you get used to it, it makes sense. The combat is cool, with an automatic pause feature at the start of battle so you can select what you want to do, even giving the choice to select up to three combat actions to be carried out in each of your turns in this turn-based system!
What really sets this one apart is the multitude of things to do. There are more than a dozen quests to take part in on each of the planets, and some surprise moments that you don't expect traveling between each beautifully-detailed worlds. The sound is good, but if you've played Jedi Outcast or some of the other Lucas Arts titles, you've heard it before. The bad guys (which you have a choice of becoming, by the way if the Jedi way is not for you) are so/so, and Darth Malak (the main enemy in the game) is somewhat original. I never really felt myself hating the guy, though. His apprentice, Darth Bandon, is cool but he doesn't last very long. The friends you meet are interesting enough, but you're a fool if you don't travel with at least one Jedi and set them up to heal you during combat.
All in all this is an outstanding game, and not just as a Star Wars game. Every aspect is moderately enjoyable to addictive, and you'll probably play it more than once.
Wait til you find out where your character came from, too...

First off, this is nothing like the Jedi Knight games. Its not a FPS, you don't see any Star Wars movie characters, and there is no noble rebellion.

Its better than Jedi Knight.

First off, the storyline could easily be split up into three parts, and, if put into movie form, would be just as good if not better than Episodes 4-6!

No joke. The plot is vastly better than Episodes 1 and 2 as well.

The gameplay is, just like every other Bioware RPG, based on D&D's current rules. Right now the version is 3.5, and although all the skills, feats, and character classes are different, the underlying rules are all the same. You will need to know what DC means, as well as what a cross-class skill is and what each attribute actually does for your character.

Initially the gameplay seems a bit boring, because you don't really have any options. No Jedi powers, no large assemblage of feats, and you aren't quite used to the turn-based-real-time combat system. Hint: Pause often.

However, as the game goes on and you gain Jedi powers and more allies, it gets a lot more fun. Fighting other force users is more consistent than in the Jedi Knight games, as strategy plays a larger part than simply running around swinging your lightsaber.

And, believe me when I say this, your jaw will hit the floor once you hit the big plot twist. It isn't contrived either. It really does make sense in the context of the game.

F***ing A.

I'm not a Star Wars fan, and was a little skeptical after reading all the reviews BUT IT'S AS GOOD AS A GAME GETS! The graphics are great! You can interact with just about everything you see, and choose what to say to other characters! This game defines role-playing, from fights to unlocking doors to hacking computer systems it's role-playing to the max! There are nine "party members" that follow you throughout the game! You can learn to use the force and different powers! You gain experience to level up along with your party members! Becoming LIGHT or DARK is completely up to you. There's alternate endings and an incredible story line! You feel as if your in a movie with the great plot, graphics, and choice of destiny(LIGHT OR DARK)! You get to travel all over the galaxy to about 7 different planets! There's the main story line as well as like 10 separate "missions" for each planet! This game is great! KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC has more weapons, options, armor and just overall more everything than any other game out there! This is the best role-playing game out there and is definitely one of the best games out there! Don't play this game if you don't have time to spare! It will suck you in! If you do have time then this is a MUST BUY! Do your self a favor and buy this game! If you don't believe me then rent it, but don't be shocked when you look at the clock and it 2 in the morning! This definitly deserves a 5 out of 5!

So Much Fun!

Okay, let me say right off that I'm not much of a gamer. They're fun and all, but I don't so much have the reflexes or the time.

Having said that, my husband and I finished this game in about a week. We played while the kids were eating breakfast and after they went to bed. We played when the baby was up teething in the middle of the night and we played when our three year old wanted a bowl of cereal at 5 a.m.

It was that much fun.

First off, any fool can play this game. I know, because I did. It starts you out in the thick of action, but guides you slowly through the control system. You get to loot stuff; get experience point you can trade in for new skills; pick up companions and all the good rpg stuff. Just a little more streamlined and full on immersed in the Star Wars universe.

I could do a little nitpicking here and there, but on the whole it's an amazingly flexible, fun, well plotted adventure. You have lots of ways to make money (including fun minigames) and lots of cool weapons and armor to spend it on. There are plenty of side quests to go on, and of course, the constant choices between good and evil that will decide whether you'll be a dark jedi or a light jedi. And they each have their perks.

What I really enjoyed about this game was how easy it was to get started, how persistantly good the storyline was, and how much control I felt like I had. My husband and I had to take turns, but even that was okay because just watching it was still reasonably fun.

If you like Star Wars or rpgs, this is a great game to pick up.
