Unfinished Game

Imagine you're watching A New Hope. Luke and the gang are rescuing Leia from the Death Star, it's very dramatic, immensely exciting, Luke and Leia leap across the broken bridge and land safely on the other side. Then the movie ends.

That's essentially this game, and I was horribly disappointed by it. The ending is simply not there. Dozens of hours of engrossing and fun gameplay culminate in what is possibly the worst ending of any game I have ever played. It's not that the ending is just bad, it's not even there. The fact that this game was released at all is an argument for changing the laws in this country to allow for software to be returned for refunds.

If you buy this game, be prepared to be disappointed at the end.

Bring the Raid, we have bugs!

The play is fun, the script is interesting, but holy COW - the BUGS!!

All over the place, unfinished bits here and there that pull you out of the moment. I ended up spending more time noticing the most recent bug (and once having to email Lucasarts when that darn thing just had a black screen).

Big heads up to lucasarts - FINISH the game, and beta test it BEFORE you hype it so much.

A dissapointment

I was an absolute fan of the first KOTOR. I found the music, the graphics, the acting, the storyline, and the technical achievment of the first game enthralling.

This installment, however, has been severly tainted by both an apparent rush by Lucasarts to get the game out the door and a disregard for the customer. This game has some serious, serious technical flaws. For instance, the swoop races in Telos simply do not work. There are numerous visual jump-cuts...something you would NEVER see in a real film the quality of Star Wars. Dialogs have both endless and recurring loops. Most ATI cards are having problems even running the game! For what I've heard (i've not finished the game yet), the ending is very poor...looks like it was pasted together by a two-year old in art class.

Lucasarts online support is unresponsive and unsupportive to this date. There is no patch, nor is there any word of any intent to release a patch. I feel a bit betrayed. I trusted them by preordering the game. Now that I have it, I feel like a sucker. P.T. Barnum was right.

IMO...wait for the bargain bin....or for a year if Lucasarts ever decides to respect their customers enough to make a patch.

An "Also-Ran" to an Awesome Game.

I'll admit it. I am a huge fan of the first Knights of the Old Republic. So when I heard they were developing a sequel, I was excited! However, once I played the game, I was rather let down by it for a number of reasons.

Don't get me wrong, it has an excellent storyline...a nice departure from the first. The new Jedi/Sith powers and abilities also made it very nice. But the various issues with it really ruined the experience for me.

First of all, it has been released with an insane number of bugs, ranging from merely annoying slowdowns to game-stopping crashes to the desktop every 30-40 minutes. There are also issues with dialogue, in which NPC dialogue is sometimes skipped completely until you are made to choose a conversation option.

Second of all, there are too many quest holes. Others have mentioned that you cannot satisfactorily complete several quests; even if you do find a way to "finish" them.

Third, the Influence system is rather tricky to get the hang of. If you don't choose the exact conversation option, you can undo what progress you've made. While it may not sound like a big deal, gaining influence with your companions can reveal more details in the storyline.

Fourth, the plot holes are GLARING!!!!!!!! It's absolutely ridiculous. As a comparison, let me illustrate it this way:

****SPOILER************

If you're not familiar with it already, Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series is said to be the pinnacle of his career. It's seven novels of a fantasy/horror genre, and it's an excellent series. Now imagine you have finished book 6, and are waiting for the climactic book 7 to end things, only instead of the 600-700 page book you were expecting, you get a 50-page novella in which the villain tells you what happens to the characters and the storyline you've been following through 6 books.

That, everyone, is how KotOR II wraps up. It's an insulting, Swiss-chees ending that strips away the storylines of your comapnions, as well as your companions themselves, without any explanation or reason. I went into the game with an open mind, and I was totally disgusted with how it was slapped together at the end, as though no one would notice.

LucasArts employees, I hope you are reading these reviews, and I hope you wake up and realize you CANNOT screw your customers by delivering this slapshod "merchandise" that IS NOT EVEN FINISHED simply because it follows an Award-Winning Game. Honestly, I thought better of you. If you put together a K3, I will be far more hesitant to purchase it, plus you can pretty much kiss goodbye any other game revenue I might have paid you since you obviously value your bottom line over your customer/fan base.

A promising sequel to a great game

The new knights of the old republic is going to be a dream for any star wars fan. The new story is five years after the original knights of the old republic. The entire jedi order has been hunted down except your character(and other outcasted jedi like yourself). The new enemy is Darth Sion, a living corpse that is constantly rotting and held together by his force powers.
Two new dark side powers are force scream and force crush. Scream is a ranged attack that kills or stuns all enemies in your characters vicinity while crush is when you levitate a characters body and literally crush their body from the inside out. The new characters are a jedi outcast like yourself and a female bounty hunter. Your light/dark side alignment also effects other characters in your party which is interesting. That is all i've heard about from this game. I hope this info is helpful.

Be careful what you are buying...

I am sure the game is great, but before you buy it, do not make my mistake and jump to the store.
The game was promised to be about the same as first installment, however, all these Graphic cards are not supported which unfortunately includes mine, so I am stuck with a 50 dollar piece of software that will not work on my laptop... I am not sure what they changed so it would be so different but the graphics seem to be the same and the original title pretty much took anything.

I am giving the game one star because I am extremely bitter.

Not worth the disks it's burned onto

Lengthy gameplay but ultimately unrewarding due to large plot holes, frustratingly unresolved storylines, and legions of bugs that hinder gameplay!

No where near as good as the 1st game

Great game, but not very different from KOTOR 1

I own both KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 and enjoyed both of them.

Pros:

-KOTOR 2 is a standalone game:

You don't have to have played KOTOR 1 to enjoy this game. If you haven't, some of the backstory and cameo appearances will not be as meaningful but you will still be able enjoy the game.

-KOTOR 2 allows you to use force powers almost immediately

For those of you that have played KOTOR 1, you will understand what I mean. You begin KOTOR 2 as a force-sensitive character and don't have to wait for 10 levels to become a jedi. :-)

-KOTOR 2 adds nice features

KOTOR 2 added the ability to learn and choose a lightsaber form. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses and the feature is a nice addition. It also allows you to break down unneeded items into components and use those components to create new items. You don't have to worry about having gobs of useless equipment anymore.

Cons:

-Feels vaguely familiar

KOTOR 2 is KOTOR 1 technology and graphics rebundled with some new features and a new plot. If you've never played KOTOR 1, it won't bother you at all. If you have, you will recognize alot of the world items like containers and weapons.

-The plot was somewhat esoteric and convoluted

KOTOR 1 had a great plot that was easy to follow. KOTOR 2's plot is more confusing and makes you really think through it. Not to say that is a *bad* plot, but KOTOR 1 owners shouldn't expect a better plot in KOTOR 2.

Summary and Recommendations:

Overall, KOTOR 2 was a solid, enjoyable game. I certainly got my money's worth out of it. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

KOTOR 1 owners:

Don't buy this game if you don't like repetition. If you are the type of person that likes expansion packs, go for it. KOTOR 2 is a great expansion to KOTOR 1.

Those who don't own KOTOR 1:

Go buy KOTOR 1 and try it out. KOTOR 1 is alot cheaper than KOTOR 2 and you can decide if you like the genre/style. If you like KOTOR 1 alot, go ahead and buy KOTOR 2.

I enjoyed it more than the original

Well I picked this up being a Star Wars fan. I was a little worried as the first game didn't really rock my boat but I really want to like the Star Wars rpgs so I gave this one a shot. I finished it in a marathon time and enjoyed it. It does have one major bug but there are fixes out there if you run into a show stopper. The graphics are on par with the original but Ithought the story was superior and it kept me interested till the end.

I look forward to the next game in the series now.

This game is very good

I played KOTOR I and found some people writting bad about KOTOR II, they are excellent games and you can choose many path to do differents things. Please install the path 1.0b for KOTOR II, it fixes many issues. KOTOR II is different to KOTOR I because the flirt conversation and dialogue between main character and part members is according to influence, and this one is done with some dialogue choices and alignment. Be too Evil or almost a Angel and you will get correct dialogue with party members.
