great remake of an already great game

Even though it's called Resident Evil, it's like a totally new game compared to the original PSone version. Any true Resident Evil must have this game. There are a lot of similarities between the two, but the GC version has a lot of new areas and surprises. Even though I like the PS controls better, after a while I got used to the GC controls. Anyone who says the controls are bad (as in most games), just doesn't know how to adjust. Having owning a PS2, GC, and XBOX, I have no trouble adjusting to new controls all the time.

THE best looking video game created for its genre to date!

Resident Evil on the Gamecube is, without a doubt, THE best looking video game created for its genre to date. It combines gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds with fantastic real-time lighting and detailed character models.

For graphics, Resident Evil does numerous things, and it does them well. Blood splatters onto walls, floor textures can be seen through blood puddles depending on the brightness of the texture, weapon loading and firing is realistic, the models are highly detailed, and the environment cannot be beat. Lights will cast realistic shadows along the walls while your character will have a realistic shadow.

The sound is also well done. There are a dozen different foostep sounds depending on the surface you are walking on, wether it being concrete, carpeting, wood, or metal. The dialogue leaves something to be desired, though.

My favorite aspect of this new Resident Evil is the inclusion of the Fuel Canteen and the Defense Items. There's just something about elctrocuting a zombie that is entertaining. My favorite Defense Item would have to be the Flash Bang for Chris. It's extremely cool to stick a Flash Bang in a zombie's mouth, then blow his head off from a safe distance. Quite entertaining.

Overall, I give Resident Evil four stars. One star was deducted for the sometimes bad dialogue, complete with horrible acting (though it's good most of the time), and the fact that there is no progressive scan mode.

Resident Evil Redone!

Wow....was I impressed with the way Capcom has redone the original Rseident Evil game. I fully enjoyed the old PS1 game and this one just takes it to a whole new level. The graphics are the best in the Resident Evil series. It is truley scarier than any other Resident Evil game. One complaint I have is the charechter control...why can't Capcom make the charechter punch or kick, that would add more realism to the game and make the charechter not so "stiff" to control. If they can upgrade the graphics so much, then why do they stick with the poor control of the charechter?...anyway...I am almost done with the game and I must admit that the game is hard as hell. I don't know if I will survive the horror with my current ammo level and save ribbons...it's going to be tough, but that what Resident Evil is all about. I will play this game more than once as I should have done some things differently...buying the Gamecube was worth it just to play this game....after I finish this game I will purchase Resident Evil Zero....well worth the price of addmission!

Good Game, Weak Remake

If you're new to Resident Evil: You can't really go wrong with this game. It's tense, and engrossing. It's almost like torture, since you're too scared to keep going, but you're so engrossed in the game that you can't stop. Yes, it does have difficult controls, but it doesn't take long to become accustomed. This game is a great adrenaline rush, and it's so involving that it's a great way to take your mind off your troubles for a couple of hours.

If you're an old fan of the series, like me, then you're the person I'd really like to address with this review. Don't believe the hype: This game is definitely not 70% new. That figure most likely applies to the graphic makeover, and if so, it's accurate. The gameplay is virtually identical to the original game, with two exceptions: You now have the 180'-turn feature, a helpful element from other RE games, and you have the defense items like daggers and tasers for when zombies get too close - but you honestly won't need these if you're any good.

As for the mansion and other areas, they're mostly the same. A few new rooms here and there don't really help, though it is scary to explore each of them for the first time. The recreated Aqua Ring (where the sharks live) is probably the most dramatic change. The important items are all in the same places, and the story progresses mostly the same for both Chris and Jill. It's still just as hard to change the story - I even accidentally killed Wesker halfway through Chris's adventure, and there he was when he was supposed to show up next in the plot, with no explanation. The voice work hasn't been improved much either. There's some wincingly awful dialogue in the confrontation with the traitor, just as bad for both Chris and Jill even though the lines are different.

The biggest change to the game, and the most obvious, is the graphic makeover. It is definitely impressive. The game is rendered in lavish detail and is very ornate and very creepy at the same time - clearly what the original game's mansion was meant to be. And for the first time in the series, each zombie has a unique look. There aren't twenty-five identical twins in the mansion! There are wonderful little touches, too, like bugs scattering from rotting flesh when you approach it, and your shadow wavering when you pass near a flickering candle. These are some amazing graphics, the second-best I've ever seen (just behind "Final Fantasy X"), but honestly, they're not worth buying the game to see. If you've played the old PSX version of this game, you can rent this one and beat it in a weekend.

My overall rating for the game is four stars, a purchase for anyone who doesn't dislike the genre. It's still an excellent game, and that rating applies to the overall package. If I were rating just the remake, though, I'd only give it two stars - a rental, not a purchase. How much you can enjoy it depends on how little of it is known to you already.

The Best Horror Game Made

I just bought Gamecube and this game for Christmas. It is simply a marvelous game! The graphics are the best of any game on any system, and the atmosphere and enemies are horrifying! The way the designers put together Resident Evil is fascinating! It's terrifying to be in a small room, in a pitch black area, and hear the pants-wetting zombie groan, but you can't see the walking monstrosity. Talk about first class fear! After playing this game for a few hours, you'll be afraid to do anything for fear of being eaten alive by mutations or being bitten by the enormous mansion-dwelling creepy-crawlies. Only problem with this game is the puzzles, and the hours that you can spend doing trying to solve them. Also, having to restart is a big problem. You can't save your game every three minutes because of the scarce ink ribbons and typewriters. This game begs for a save anytime feature. Above all, buy this game. A mere rental won't get you past the very beginning, and access to both character's stories and the cool secrets. You don't have a Gamecube, get one!

Highly Exceptional!!!

OMG! This game ROCKS! Totally better than the original P.S. game. This has better graphics, friggin' cooler suprises, and everything else the original didn't have! I played this with my bro., and we were totally obsessed with beating this one since we couldn't beat the original. It took us 14 hours and 32 minutes to beat it, but it's so much easier to kill everything once you get the Rocket Launcher infinite ammo.
Right after we beat the game we watched the movie, and were like, totally pissed off that the friggin' writer/director didn't let the movie take place in the mansion! That's the ESSENCE of Resident Evil! But I have hopes that the sequel will forget Milla Jovovich and stay true to the video game. Then in the third one Milla can pop up again in the city and try to kill all those zombies along with the S.T.A.R.S. team survivors from the second movie and THEN I'll be happy. :)

This Game is a Remake of the Original Resident Evil for the Playsation in 1996. The Remake of The Gamecube is Awesome. The Graphics have improved alot. There are a few new areas that had not been in the Original Resident Evil and is a Bit Easier compared to the Playstaion Version. It took me a Year to beat the One in Playstation. There is no way to kill a Zombie unless you burn them with Kerosine or Blow Up there Heads. This makes the Game More Realistic. The Wood makes it creepy, especially the Cabin and the Thing in Chains which is up to you to find out. This Game is one the Most Scariest.

All I have to say about the game is if you are a resident evil fan like myself then you will no doubt love this game. The game is a great remake of the original but its more than a remake it builds on to the original game greatly. The visuals in this game are the greatest graphics that I have ever secne. This game proves that the Gamecubes graphics can go up against any gaming console out there. This game gets 5 stars because it is a brillant game. I recommend this game to any resident evil fan and or Gamecube owner.

A good remake for the best horror game-period.

This game is- in a word- awesome. The graphics have to be the best that has ever been(with the exception of RE 0). The graphic changes from the original to the remake are simply breathtaking. While zombies look like colored-in walking blocks of annoying sound, the new zombies perform a too-smart-it's-almost-scary movement. The enviroments I could just stare in awe at for hours. This is a very challenging game with high replay value. There will be moments where you will piss your pants and go "Holy sh**! What the hell was that?" and sounds that will make you pause the game and go "Holy sh**! What the hell was that?" Never have I played a game with so much graphic detail and great gameplay at the sametime. One of the many Capcom's masterpiece's, this is a must-have.
