Where The Wind Waker Stands...

As a die-hard Zelda fan who remembers the original commercial for the NES game, I eagerly anticipated the release of The Wind Waker for quite some time. The only reason I purchased Gamecube, and even Nintendo 64, was to play the Zelda games made for them.

Many have found fault with The Wind Waker's graphics. I find them to be excellent. The emotion on Link's face is amazing! It adds a new dimension to the game. The problem is that the graphics, when compared to Ocarina of Time are too whimsical... Remember when you first saw the Deku Tree for the first time? There are no scenes in this game that compare to that. Maybe it's the constant light blue with the water that lightens it up too much....

I like the fact that the weaponry and items are consistent with the previous games. It meshes well with the familiar gameplay that makes this game series a "cut above". All of the additions- grappling hook, wind waker, etc., are excellent. I would have liked one more sword upgrade, but who could argue with having the venerable Master Sword? One more thing... Will we ever again be able to throw our sword when we have full health?

The story is equal or better than all Zelda games past. The breadth of subplots and stories is remarkable. The game itself, while short, is the beneficiary of an astoundingly well articulated plot. The side quests, which I highly recommend, will lengthen the game enough to suit any gamer's appetite.

In all, I find this game to be intruiging, entertaining, and well-delivered... I hope that the next game is a bit more Empire Strikes Back-esque in it's delivery. Let's see Ganon really bring Hyrule to its knees with the next episode!

Spectacular.

Personally, I was one of many who was originally turned off by the new design in Link. His head became enormous, his arms became much longer, his legs somewhat shorter, and has stumps for feet. Still, when playing this game, it's difficult not to take this strangely light-hearted character designing seriously once one gets involved with the storyline.

There are several references to the "Ocarina of Time" in this game, but of course, you don't need to play it in order to understand this game.

The storyline is terrific. There are several clever plot twists along the way just enough to make one go "Ooh" and "Aah.", however towards the end of the game, the plot slows down significantly. It became a little tougher to play once the end rolled around, however it doesn't become entirely 'boring.'

I really liked the music. As a matter of fact this has some exceptionally good tracks. I noticed in the end that Nintendo used several composers to create the musical score. It's good that they're doing this, because even though I think Koji Kondo is a complete genius with the original Zelda tune written all the way back in 1986, it's good to have some flow with other composers mixed in there.

Personally, I think the graphics are also terrific. The world to explore is great, but had they made the character designs much more serious-looking, this game would have blown me away even more. Not that I'm taking away from the current designs, just thought I'd point out that obvious, redundant thought.

I also hear they're planning another Zelda title already. I'm already excited for it. =)

Sweet!

Recently I got a GameCube(okay last week), and it game with Zelda: The Wind Waker(lucky me), and this game is awesome. Honestly I'm not very good at it, but that just proves that it can be fun no matter how good you are. The guard's can get frustrating, but overall it's cool.

Master Quest is awesome too(comes in game). The Ocarina of Time was good, but Master Quest is even better! It has the same people and stuff, but is tougher and has some extra add-ons so it's pretty different(at the end). Both of these are great games, and if you get the game be sure to watch the movies on the Ocarina of time cd.

A Shooter Fan

I am a shooter fan and have been playing games for years. I went with my friend to Portland and he bought The Legend Of Zelda The Wind Waker which I said dude don't buy that looks dumb and kiddish. Well I bought my games and we went home. I played Die Hard Vendetta and SSX Tricky first and then he played his games that night after he got out of work. Well it starts of pretty cool and has a look to it which I really like actually. He played for 4 hours and after he shut the Gamecube off I said nevermind I want this game. The game has a kiddish look to it I have to admit but it is a amazing look when you see it in actual play. So if you were afraid off the cel shaded look don't be it is actually pretty darn cool looking. When you see it you will think diffrent on what to look for in cel shaded games. Play the game for about a hour and you will see why Nintendo went with the new look. I would give up some of my shooting games just to have this game.

Zelda? .. (3 1/2 stars)

As a huge Zelda fan (I own every Zelda game for every console) I can tell you that, although this game is at least decent in each aspect, there's something missing about it. Perhaps it's the easy-to-adjust-to style of gameplay of other Zeldas. The Oracle of Seasons\Oracle of Ages games were both a far cry from the tired-and-true save the princess storyline, but they turned out to be the best games for the Game Boy Color console. This game, I would not call at all the best game for the Nintendo Gamecube.

Granted, of my consoles, I have the least number of -games- for this system, but I think I've played enough to give fair judgment to this. Let me start by saying...I have not beaten this game. This game is based on my being about halfway through the game.

First of all, the graphics are distracting. The control of them is smooth and effective, but the cartoon-esque style almost kind of throws you off, and everything seems like it's done automatically, especially the ultra-sloppy fighting system of crash-boom-bang. It's incredibly odd for a Zelda game to have a weak fighting system, but nonetheless, it does, and you've been warned in advance before (perhaps) buying it.

It may also be a little difficult for any younger player or inexperienced player- the 1st dungeon (level) was even a bit of a hassle to get through, and again, very "non-Zelda" as I'll refer to this game as.

But that doesn't mean it's not a good game. I'd much rather be playing this than even something like Mario Sunshine or Luigi's Mansion, two other quirky games released for the system. (Who's idea was it for Mario to clean up the island?) Though it's more a spin off of Zelda (the storyline and characters are completely irrelevant to any other Zelda storyline, Link having a sister per se, plus the hero at the beginning seems like he's inheriting Link's status rather than setting out as the Hero of Time, Link.) It's still a challenge and something fun to do when you have nothing better to do. That doesn't sound very convincing, but it's not too easy for me to sit down and start playing a game--it's got to be pretty good, which not very many games are today.

Again to the negatives. This game lacks what made Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask so memorable and the two of the best games ever made. (OoT, I would personally rank as #1) ..The cinematic-esque feeling that you get when you play it and finish it. It doesn't play out like a movie, which all great games do. It plays out as a game, nothing but a game, just simply a game to play, not to experience, as games should be when they are long and drawn-out. Even "Link's Awakening" for the original Game Boy possessed this quality, and with a game like Zelda it should be simple to acheive, but Nintendo failed to do so this time, mostly thanks to the graphics, which gave it a joking sort of manner to it.

Simply not Zelda.

BOTTOM LINE: This is more a spin-off than an actual ZELDA game.
GRADE : B

This game is legendary...

This game is legendary...

Graphics: 10/10

While some might not like the cel-shaded look, I found it refreshing. As games have more realistic graphics, they also become more unreal to some extent. This game reminded me of favorites like Paper Mario, but in a new and inventive way.

For my first Zelda game, I'm glad it had more of a classic look redone, rather than an in-your-face realism. The visuals and movie scenes are truly amazing, to say the least.

I'll admit, I was a bit dissapointed when I saw the graphics, but they really grew on me. Now I'd rather play a game with Wind Waker graphics than most other graphic styles...

Just play the game for a while, and try not to be too skeptical ;)

-----

Sound: 10/10

The sound is outstanding. Whether you're conducting with the Wind Waker, watching a movie scene, or simply sailing the Great Sea, everything sounds great. The instruments come through clear as glass, and the sound just fits perfectly into the game, pulling you into the experience.

There isn't much voice acting, but I've read that there's never been a lot of voice acting in Zelda games. However, the voice acting that is present is nice, and isn't annoying or out of place.

-----

Control: 9.5/10

If you haven't played Zelda before (like I hadn't), the controls might seem a bit confusing at first. But once you've played for a few hours, you'll start to wonder why all games don't have controls like this game :D

I didn't find any major flaws with the controls, althought as I noted, you might have a bit of trouble until you get used to them.

-----

Replay/Entertainment Value: 9.5/10

I found Wind Waker to be an exciting, fun adventure. It isn't very hard overall, but it'll present challenges with the puzzles, even if you find all the enemies easy to defeat. I admit, I used my old Nintendo Power magazines to help me through the first half. After that, I solved most of it myself, but I had to get help online a few times.

While the game isn't something I can imagine playing again and again, I got over 40 hours gameplay (probably more around 50), so the length didn't dissapoint me. Also, the special bonuses you get after you beat the game (such as playing in your normal clothes, and there are a few more) are a nice touch for gamers who like beating a game multiple times.

I don't find them enough of an incentive to go and play it again right away though...

Another dungeon might have been nice, but the game has plenty of things to accomplish, especially if you want to get every detail completed.

-----

Final Score: 10/10

The Wind Waker has become my favorite game of all time, and if you don't have the game now, you should rent/buy it. Certainly the best game in my GCN collection...worth every penny.

Great!!!

This would probably have to be the best game for gamecube, but not the best Legend of Zelda game. The game has all of the same classic elements as in any Legend of Zelda game plus a few new features, but it adds a little too many features. As for the grafics: it's better than ever! But nintendo has added a kind of a cartoon look to it which kind of ruins it, but that doesn't automaticaly ruin the entire game. Overall, this game is worth your while and money: Buy It!

So-so on Nintendo's part

Zelda: the Wind Waker takes place in a world about 100 years after the story of the Ocarina of Time. Hyrule no longer exists, and the Hylian language is only spoken by gods. The world is now an archipelago. Somehow, Ganon has returned and is terrorizing the world. Wow, how the world has changed!

The controls in Wind Waker are very similar to the controls in Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. If you have played these games before, it probably won't take you more than a second to get used to the game because most of the way "Link" moves and uses items is very similar to its N64 counterparts. There are a few new conveniences as well. For Example, you do not have to use the pause screen to change what type of arrows you are using; instead, you press the R button while you have your bow equipped to switch.

The concept of using a boat really boosts the game's originality. In Wind Waker, you use a boat called the King of the Red Lions to sail around the world. The speed in which the boat moves depends on what direction the wind is blowing. If you need to go another direction, you can change the direction the wind is blowing by using the Wind Waker (the Wind Waker is a conductor's baton). Also, certain items have different function while on the boat. Example: the grappling hook, when used on the boat, is a crane that allows you to grab treasure from the ocean floor.

Wind Waker has tons of things to do that are not part of the main storyline. The minigames are what add up to the many hours of gameplay. One will have you taking pictures of characters from all around the game so that a sculptor will create figures of what you take pictures of. In Wind Waker, there are charts to find that will mark a place in the world where great treasure is hidden in the sea. There are many more, and without them, the game would probably be only 10-20 hours long.

*: There is a function in Wind Waker that requires a Game Boy Advance and a cable to connect the GBA to the GC. It's not required to get through the game, but it helps in certain occassions.

This game is a true original by Nintendo. Zelda vets, this game may seem easy and short, but attempt to get through all of the difficult minigames. That'll keep you busy.

play this game as soon as you can!!!
