A Classic Resurfaces for a new generation

No matter how many times I've played the diffent incarnations of the Legend of Zelda, I have never gotten sick of the way the game plays. Discovering useful items and using them in different situations to progress to the next level. That's what Zelda's gameplay is all about. It's exciting and fresh due to the characterizations of the protagonist and his supporting cast. The name Zelda in the title, is a bit misleading, as it's really Link that's the main player here. One noticable difference the Gamecube version has over it's predecessors, is the world it's set in. Here the world is surrounded by oceans with outlaying islands here and there. Instead of traversing lands by foot, now Link travels by the aid of a talking boat. This game is marvelous, and profoundly imaginative. The use of cel shaded graphics only adds to the charm. An amazing experience! Nintendo, you've done it again!

There's a great game under those graphics folks...

It's a controversy that was so massive, fights broke out(literally). No, this isn't Columbine, or the recent war in Iraq, or Clinton's sexcapades, it was the Legend of Zelda demo from Spaceworld 2001. Instead of the ultra-realistic and "mondo cool" demo from 2000, we now have something that looks like Saturday Morning's cartoon lineup. Admittedly, it's strange seeing my favorite characters(the 3 main ones in every Zelda) in cel-shaded graphics, the thought soon vanished afterwards.

Story: Link is living on Outset Island and celebrating his birthday when his sister(another change from before) gives him the classic Green Tunic, then Link sees a girl being dropped in a nearby forest. He rescues her but then his sister, Aryll, is kidnapped by a big bird. He then sets off on a rescue mission and gets caught up in the ancient legends of old.

Graphics: People absolutely were divided on these graphics. Some liked the change, others said "let me play it first", others didn't give it a chance and just completely dismissed it saying they wouldn't even bother playing it at all, which is a shame cause these are just beautiful. Fluid animation, wide facial expressions and great bosses(dare you not to exclaim "holy **** he's huge!" if you get to the Dragon Roost Island boss).

Sound/Music: It's not orchestrated, which is a bummer, but it's great music nonetheless. Voice is basically like Ocarina/Majora(no actual speech, just the occasionally laugh, moan and scream).

Gameplay: the critical factor with games and Zelda delivers, and then some. Taking the Z-targeting and making it L, it's pretty much the same as Ocarina/Majora. Except now, Link has some new items, like a boomerang which can hit multiple targets. Where the game loses points is the open sea. Yes, a huge portion of your playing time will be spent out on the sea, sailing. It's cool the first time but after awhile you're like "just get to the island already".

Regardless of your feelings towards the graphics, which shouldn't even be an issue in games, there's still a great game with a great story and solid gameplay under those Saturday morning visuals.

This is why I love Nintendo..

.. they make blockbuster games that stick with you long after you have finished playing them.

Despite what detractors have said regarding the change in animation styles, the game looks and plays unbelievably well. I've been a huge Zelda fan for years, and bought my GC in anticipation of this game being released. It doesn't disappoint.

The storyline has been recapped a million times, so I won't go into that. What I *will* say is that the developers of this game clearly understood what fans loved and hated about previous incarnations of the Zelda franchise and took those things to heart. Targeting is way better (you use the weapon to target most of the time, not a Z-button + weapon). Load times are SIGNIFICANTLY lower than previous versions. The animation seriously looks like you're controlling your own cartoon. Amazing stuff.

You will spend HOURS playing this game, not to mention all of the extra "side games" that Zelda is so famous for including. I find it interesting that Majora's Mask is completely overlooked here - everything in the story and the feel of the game references Ocarina of Time, as if nothing took place in between. That does not, however, detract from the game.

Well worth the purchase (and hopefully you can still get the bonus disc with the enhanced "Ocarina" included)!

Must-have for any GameCube owner

Well, enough has been written and said about this game that my review is probably superfluous, but here goes...

The most fuss about this game has arisen from its graphics, because WW adopted a cel-shaded, super-deformed look. I found that this look did not in any way detract from the game. On the contrary, the added details made the game a much more immersive and believable experience. Link's face is very expressive, and the touch of having his eyes lead you to useful points in the area is very well done. The creature movements all seem highly realistic, and the detail, again, is incredible. Boko Babas lick their "lips" before attempting to eat you, the tassels on the moblins' spears shake as they walk. The graphics are truly superior (with a great framerate to boot).

Control of Link (and the other characters) is effortless, and the mechanics of gameplay are implemented extremely well. The "parry" combat option adds a new level of tactical complexity that can be really fun, and battles can get quite hairy because enemies will truly gang up on you. The dungeons are well-designed and feature a few interesting puzzles, though none of them are as complex as, say, the Water Temple from OoT. The bosses seem a bit easy, particularly Jalhalla, but a few can get quite hairy. The battles against Puppet Ganon and Ganondorf himself are great, the final fight being highly cinematic and fun.

The game's major weakness is its penultimate act, a treasure-hunt across the Great Sea that consumes a great deal of time while providing only a few moments of enjoyment. Getting the triforce charts is fun (particularly in the Savage Labyrinth, which was a blast), but having them translated is a pain (and forces you to deal with Tingle, who is just CREEPY), and actually getting the treasure from the ocean floor is anticlimactic. This is a minor quibble, however, especially compared with how much fun the rest of the game is.

The story is fairly light-hearted for a 3-D Zelda game until near the end of the game -- what mayhem Ganondorf wreaks on the Great Sea is nothing like the scale of what he did to Hyrule in Ocarina of Time. However, the growing theme of regret creates a moving final scene between Link, Zelda, and the King. Additionally, Ganondorf finally becomes fully realized as a character. His monologues near the end paint a fuller picture of his motives and raise him above the generic evil that he has been in the past (even in OoT). In a video game, this is superb storytelling.

The audio quality is also quite good, but is probably the weakest point of the game. The music can be wonderful (as when you're sailing), but in some places the music is very thin and has an very synthetic (and jarring) feel. Additionally, there are some places where the sound effects feel a bit unpolished, which again is jarring.

Replay value, as is typical for an adventure game, is just above average... however, the world is large and diverse enough that you will continue to find minor new areas to explore up until your 4th or 5th time through.

Certainly if you like adventure games at all you should purchase this one. The Wind Waker is a great game with an engaging storyline and effortless gameplay. Though it bogs down a bit towards the end, the final battle and stunning resolution more than make up for this hiccup. All in all, an essential purchase for any GameCube owner.

Gameplay: Superb
Story: Excellent

Sound: Excellent
Replay: Good
Overall: Superb (91%)

Reasons Why You Should Play Windwaker

I had seen my friend playing Windwaker and I'd seen commercials for it. My excitement had grown over time and when I actually played it, I thought it was the best game I'd ever played, which is still true.

-I love story parts in video games; they make the game more interesting. In Windwaker, the story parts were great.
-I thought the idea of sailing was very unique. Other games have sailing, but not with the same effects or importance to the game.
-There are so many more side quests that even after you finish the game, you'll still have many hours of playing time.
-The actual game play was awesome! The bosses (although a couple weren't as difficult as others) were really cool, the dungeons they were in were great, and the graphics were very realistic.

I could sit here and try to think of something I didn't like about Windwaker, but that would be a waste of time. Don't hesitate...buy Windwaker. You won't regret it. You'll also realize how good the other Zelda games are, and who knows...you might get hooked.

Fine example of how gameplay ultimately rules over graphics

Get past the "kiddie" look of the latest Nintendo masterpiece and you'll find that magical gameplay that is evident in almost all of Nintendo's first party games. I bought my GC and chose Zelda as my free game...the first night after setting up my new Cube, I fired up Zelda and began my adventure. I haven't been this absorbed in a new game since the original Shenmue on the Sega Dreamcast. When I looked up at the clock, 5 hours had passed!! That's just a testament to how engrossing and addictive this perfect little game can be!

The story is quite interesting and the graphics begin to grow on you after a while. The play control is flawless...I can't even begin to tell you how much fun controlling Link and slashing around with the sword is! Fluid movement, a good framerate and a "save anywhere" feature help to make this game that much better! The soundtrack is effective and the limited voices enhance the storytelling. Load times are nearly non-existent...a big plus for me and since it comes on one GC disc, there's no need to swap out discs during gameplay!

I think this is the best Zelda game since the original 8-bit incarnation. While I still have a ways to go before I finish my quest, the parts that I've experienced so far indicate to me that this is a first rate masterpiece and exactly the type of game that Nintendo is known for! Great game-buy it now!!

For a first time Zelda Player, It's Fantastic!

Growing up I never had a Nintendo - My dad was keen on the other gaming systems instead. So I watched with much grumbling as my friends played hour after hour of a great Zelda game. But no more watching from the sidelines!

This Zelda game has matured in terms of graphics and storyline, while keeping the excellent story elements that are important and adding interesting and exciting twists to them. Easy to play without being too easy, this game is guarenteed for hours of playability, and even the older Video Gamers can enjoy this, having played prior versions of Zelda in the past or not!

One of the rare gems that made each Nintedo Console shine

is back, and it definitly makes the gamecube shine, just like the series has done so many times before.
Pros:
Stunning graphics
Very nice gameplay system
Very good storyline so far
Very nice music
The wind waker is a big help along the way
So far...Boss fights are fun, and not all that hard
Not as good as Ocarina of Time, but pretty darn good
Cons:
The boat rides are pretty gosh darn long
Some puzzels got me stuck, and my stupid gamenow strategy guide won't help me out
That stealth mission was pretty hard(Because I'm not the guy that usually sneaks around)

I got the game not too long ago, and it's pretty hard for me to find any cons in this game. This game is so much fun, and Cel-Shaded graphics aren't bad at all. This is a must have for any Zelda fan. Even if you have a gamecube, and didn't really play Zelda, you shouldn't miss out on this masterpiece, and also check out Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, 2 other clasics on the gamecube.

peace

I loved ocarina of time It used to be my favorite game until this came out.

Lots of people have not bought this because of the graphics. most people see the game at the store and see the graphics just very breafly and think that they are really bad and if the graphics were better mabey i would get it. I was like this too. i had just given in to buying Wind Waker about three days ago and i havnt stoped playing it since! The graphics may look really cartoony but they really fit the game well.

The game is filled with familier places like the Great Deku Tree from Ocarina of time but they are in a very differant setting. Ganondwarf is also back in this game again trying to reign evil over the world. Wind Waker has a lot of great charecters and places. one thing that i do not like about traveling frome place to place is it takes a long time. although if you think about it if you slowed it down it would almost be too short. To tralve from island to island you have a boat with a sail and you have to have the wind behind you to be able to sail.

It is filled with great dongeons and new bosses. The thing i like about the dungeons is that they are not really easy. I hat game that are easy. Although they are not hard either. They make you think and you have too look at the situation, where you are, and what you have to get through them. They really make you think which is something i like in a game.

This is a great game for someone 10 and up. It has all around goodness.

Best game I've ever played

I've been playing video games since the 1980s but this is my first Zelda game - and I see what the fuss is about. This game took 4 or 5 years to make, and it shows. The plot, play dynamics, graphics, music and combat are just about perfect. What really amazes me is the depth of the game. There's a main plot but a staggering number of side quests. When I play this game, I really feel like I'm in the presence of genius. Don't miss out on this one.
