Too easy and too young

This is the only Zelda game I DIDN'T like. It's too cutesy and too easy. It's a little kid game and as such I'm not surprised it didn't spend much time on the gaming charts. I was so disappointed after Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask came out, after at least three years of waiting, and the graphics and gameplay were so cool. Then Nintendo releases this 2 minutes after GameCube was developed, and we get a cruddy game with a 3-year-old additude. Sorry Nintendo, but most gamers are in their teens and above. The developers said they didn't go with more realistic graphics because it "would've taken too long." I suppose with Nintendo's failure with the GameCube they were just eager to get the stuff out so they could start work on the next console. Anyway, I hope they know now that you can spend 5 years making a game, then we'll know it's good and we'll buy it, play it, and enjoy it, but if you cut corners just to save some time, then you might receive a flicker of sales before everyone gets disgusted.

It has its flaws, but The Wind Waker is still spectacular

I'm going to skip all the laudatory comments that usually accompany 5-star reviews and focus mainly on what is *wrong* with the game.

This game is a bit too easy. I beat it after about a week and a half of semi-intense play (I never played more than two hours at a stretch), and only died twice during that time. In contrast, I died about 40 times during my first playthrough of Ocarina of Time, and even more times in Majora's Mask. That probably comes from the fact that most of the bigger challenges in WW come from puzzle-solving, not combat. I never broke a sweat fighting any of the enemies, save the final bosses (which are *very* difficult).

Controlling the wind was extremely annoying at first, but I got used to it. Using the wind to solve puzzles is pretty cool, too. Same with the sailing, it was mind-numbingly dull, but after getting the warp song, it wasn't nearly as bad.

The Treasure Charts are kind of asinine. It's not too challenging to match up a chart with a map, and it gets kind of old sailing around looking for treasure. Instead of giving a Treasure Chart as a reward for doing something, why not just give the treasure that the chart leads to and skip all the annoying sailing?

Pieces of Heart are a bit easy to find, as well. I already have them all, and never felt really challenged finding any of them (other than a couple times, like finding Deku Tree saplings and the flower trading sequence).

I think that's about all the criticisms I have of the game, and after all that, I still think it deserves five stars. The graphics are perfect (in my opinion, at least). Some of the cinemas in the game are just breathtaking. The gameplay is fantastic, and the storyline is the best of any Zelda game thus far. There are some *really* cool plot twists, as well.

And the Nintendo Gallery/Deluxe Picto Box feature is just too cool for words.

So I guess the point of my review is: I had a blast playing this game, and never really had any criticisms until after I beat it. Definitely an all-time classic.

Best video game ever!

The Wind Waker was a risk for Nintendo. Besides the obvious difference in graphics due to new cel-shading techniques, they mostly scrapped the core storyline of previous Zelda games and added a different, lighthearted feel to the classic series.

Did it work? Mostly. But the flaws in the game come not from the decision to use cartoon graphics or to move away from the old Zelda storyline, but in the game's execution as a whole. First, however, we must look at the most obvious change: the cel-shaded graphics. Though the decision to use cel-shading created outrage among hardcore Zelda fans, it was actually done quite well; the animation compliments the light nature of the plot. Though a disappointment for some, these cel-shaded graphics are technically very good and certainly show off the capabilities of the Gamecube.

The plot, too, is very different from the previous games, most of which (including the amazing N64 installment, Ocarina of Time) were set in Hyrule. In Wind Waker, the setting is on various islands in the Great Sea hundreds of years in the future... though as the story progresses, it turns out that the story is not as detached from previous games as one is initially led to believe. The shift was a bold move, but was well done as a whole because of the strong ties to games such as Ocarina of Time, which created a sense of nostalgia for longtime Zelda fans. Just as important are the new gamers who will find the plot of Wind Waker to be independent enough to enjoy without any prior Zelda knowledge.

That said, the major problem with this game lies in the gameplay itself. Though various innovations were successfully added to the user interface and controls (the slick counter-attack move, for example), one can't help but notice that many of the tasks given to Link are trivial at best and downright boring at worst. Take, for example, sailing, which is Link's primary method of transportation between islands. It takes forever and requires little interaction; I frequently would set the sail's direction and leave the controller on the ground to go get a snack. Beastly sea-monsters are not all that common, and only serve as a nuisance instead of a challenge while sailing. Additionally, Link is required to go on a kind of fishing expedition at the end of the game that is seriously tedious, frightfully boring, and takes lots of time with no challenge at all. Finally, combat is smooth but easy; death by combat is quite rare for all but the most novice of players.

The Wind Waker was a brave attempt at a new direction for the Zelda series, and the new direction works, for the most part. However, flaws in the gameplay itself seriously distract from the intricate plots that define the Zelda series and make The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker a less-than-stellar addition to the classic Nintendo series.

Where's The Magic?

Where do I begin with this game. Nintendo I stongly urge you to bring back the old feel of wow, this game is amazing I want more. This game severly lacks any of the magic previous installments had such as, of course OoT. You might find this game challenging if you are a 5 year-old. There are so many hints and "useful items" that this game quikly gets boring. I don't understand what the people over at Nintendo were thinking when they made the whole concept of moving around by sea. No doubt this is an origianl concept but also a highly annoying one. If people tell you 30 hours of game play it means 20 minus the water travel. And by the time you are done you will know it like the back of your hand because you have to backtrack so much. I know it's pointless debating it any longer but the graphics frankly [are not good]. I am a die-hard Zelda fanatic and no matter how you look at it the graphics annoy you. You'll find yourself thinking back to the glory days of OoT when everything looked right. The ending [makes]for all in all the worst Zelda game to date. The only reason I gave this game 2 instead of 1 star is because well, it's Zelda.

What in the world?!

Ugh, that is the most dumbest game! I loved Zelda: Ocarina of Tim and Majora's Mask. They looked great for the N64. But I was also baffled by the myster pick they showed in magazines. When this cartoon load ...came out, I screamed and hid under my bed. Link (the real one) was supposed to be in it. Not some bobble head little thing. The graphics where good, but I wanted Resident Evil looking Link and Ganondorf. Oh, Ganondork looks like he is 6000 years old, not hip and 30 like the older ones. The King of Red Dragons mouth was dubbed badly it looked dumb. STILL NO VOICE TALENT! I could understand why on the N64 they couldn't talk. But on the GCN, look at the other games! They talk! Why can't Link?! Oh and don't forget that bobble-head can't say a sentence. ...

NOT LEGENDARY...

If you're very familiar with the first zelda, with the old school N.E.S. sytems, Im sure you were impressed with the gameplay even though you had to figure out what to do and where to go out on your own. But that was the basis for pure simple RPG style that was fun! Sure the graphics are nothing compared to this sorry excuse for what came out in 2003, But GAME INVOLVEMENT is the ticket people!! it is the unknown lurking in a cave or dungeon or room. And that's what the very first zelda had. GAME INVOLVEMENT! same goes for OCARINA of TIME,which I thought and still IS the best zelda game for nintendo. This latest installment never should have left or even concieved in the game studios....what we have here is nothing more than a "hold you by the hand" cartoon."please tell me what to do next" How sad by engineers logic that mature gamers lack the intelligence on how to navigate through this game without having "reminders" or "helpful tools" to give us an easier gameing experience. MATURE GAMERS are not between six and nine years old, and I'm sure even little ones whom played ocarina of time will be dissappointed. Lets all repeat...WE WANT GAMES!! NOT CARTOONS!!

So cool

Minutes after getting the new Zelda game I put it in my Gamecube, just for a little preview before I ate lunch. Well, within two seconds I was hooked. Lunch had to wait for more than an hour while I dove head first into this adventure. And it really is an adventure. The graphics are so cool, and really make the game come to life. Another reviewer said that even the dust looked great. He's right. The details are there, from the swirls in dust clouds, to the facial expressions on Link's face, to the many phases of the moon in the sky. Man, this is a pretty game. However, it's not just looks. The game is challenging and fun. Sometimes I was literally dancing in my chair while fighting some of the enemies. I'm nearly done with the game after playing it for nearly 3 weeks straight. However, beating the final enemy has proven to be hard. I'll try again tomorrow. To wrap up, if you like the Zelda series you'll love this game. It's so much like the great Zelda games of the past.

Give it a chance, You won't regret it!

I know alot of people where disappointed when they saw it's cartoon style graphics but they grow on you. The Wind Waker is an excellent game. The storyline is great, the GameBoy Advance connection gives you more info,a new weapon, and more maps, and it has story elements that go back to Ocarina of Time, and the Ultimate Weapon goes back to A Link to the Past, but despite these connections to other Zelda games it is a very original game.

One of the best Gamecube games

When I heared this game had cel - shaded graphics, I thought, probaly like thousands of other Zelda fans, that it would be "kiddy" and stupid. When I played it, I found out that I was very wrong. This is obviously one of the greatest games ever created. It's cheerful enough to keep you from getting scared from the darkness of the game, (I got scared from how dark Majora's Mask was) and dark enough to keep you from getting pissed off from all the cheerfulness. If you haven't played this game, you don't know what you're missing out on.
