Total ...& Unoriginal

This game was a lousy RTS and was simply another ... of Microsoft's to copy other games and sell them for [$$$] a pop. Have you ever played 'Age of Empires' or 'WarcraftII'? Well then you've also played 'Rise of Nations'. I wonder how the programmers of this game can sleep at night knowing that this game is simply a copy of other RTS games that came before it. But this game is MUCH WORSE because its graphics and gameplay suck for a game that just came out in 2003.

I'm dumbfounded by the lack of originality in this game as well as all the other [copies] out there.

I'll end by saying that this game is like a bad sequel. You expect it to be as good as the original but it ends up being disappointingly worse.

Nice graphics but same ol thing

The game *looks* nice. But it's just a click fest like the other hundred games in this genre. If you enjoy mousing around faster than your opponent, you'll dig it. If you enjoy more strategy then get Civ III.

Good game, no soul.

Some games have character, and this one doesn't have it. It is, however, fun, and like others have said, combines a lot of the best aspects of older titles.

The different civilizations are pretty cool, but I'd like more unique units and fewer economic and military bonuses. The campaign is awesome, but difficult at the easiest setting, as are quick battles. My friend and I are avid strategy gamers and we had trouble going co-op against the two AI opponents on the lowest setting. Its taken us between 8-11 hours to finish skirmishes. So the AI is amazing, but it leaves me with a cold feeling in my heart, like while playing a German killing GIs in Day of Defeat. Its too good.

But I stick more with Age of Mythology, but thats more because I love ancient civs, despite the games inaccuracies.

Oh, and I hate the idea of Wonders, of which there are lots in RoN.

Cheap re-make

I love good strategy games, but this doesn't qualify. This is a cheap remake of Empire Earth. The graphics are worse than that of Empire Earth, and the unit movement is very glitchy.
Advise to microsoft game development crew; "Start over!!!"
Yes, the upgrades are cool, but repetitive.
This game held my attention for about 4 hours. Then I got sick of it, and was ready to sell it back.

Crashes on Non-Administrator Accounts

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 5 / 21

Beware: This program, like many other recent games, will ONLY run properly on an account that has administrator privileges on Windows XP or 2000. That means that in most common home settings, school settings, or in public facilities with shared computers most users will not be able to play this game. If you have configured your home PC, for example, so that only you can perform potentially damaging administrative operations and have protected it from accidental damage by your kids by giving them "limited" accounts (a recommended "best practice" you should certainly be following), your kids will not be able to play this game. Similarly, if you have configured computers in a school in the obvious way, with only certain staff given administrative access and all others limited to "user-level" access, then only the administrators will be able to play the game.
Note that although I agree with the general consensus that Rise of Nations is an excellent game, my feeling is that it this limitation is a fatal one that should have been noted on the box (it is not) and thus I cannot give this product more than a single star, because it simply does not work in scenarios that it should be expected to work, and there are no warnings to this effect anywhere on the box or in the documentation.

Just another Age of Empires game in a new box

Now let me just say that i have played many RTS games, so i know what am going to get from games like this but Rise of Nations just couldn't delieve the basics for any RTS games. I would like to know why the makers made just one campaign map for the whole game plus the skrimish maps just [stink] hell the whole combat and AI can't do much except sit there and make a bigger an easy hit because they won't fight you. One thing the designers really should fix before this want out is that it could used by most systems but they didn't so then you got to on the man hunt for updates on sound, video cards because it won't work. If you still want it after this please just get the demo or rent do not buy this game BIG WASTE OF HARD CASH and if anyone from Microsoft Game Studios is reading please stop making games like this Age of Empires2 was and forever will be your best game so stop trying to beat it.

PS. Everyone who agrees with me please demand that Microsoft stops making games am tried of them.

This review is meant for the developers of this game and shall not be of much use for somebody who doesn't know this game. This is a toy, not a hobby. It's a very nice toy. When I played toy real time war games like "Age of Empires" and "Empire Earth" I imagined how I would build my ideal real time toy war game. Well, "Rise of Nations" contains every aspect I dreamt of. I hope you made stacks of money because you put yourself out of a job - you can't improve this game - you'll have to come up with something revolutionary! Congratulations.

Rise of the Sequel!

If you liked the other Age of Empires games, you'll love this game. It is nearly identical to the previous games, with updated graphics and a few minor improvements. I thought the whole series rather boring and uninspired, hence the poor review.

NOT an AOM or AOE copy - The Best RTS on the market !!

... Once you've played the full version of Ron and gotten used to playing it everything else fails in comparison. I just played four or five games of Age of Mythology and was blown away by how boring and tedious it was compared to RON. If you want the best Real Time Strategy Game on the market then by Rise of Nations and don't waste your money on other games.

There are elements of other Rts games in Ron but Ron takes them farther and once you've played an RTS with "smart" citizens, gatherers, peons, whatever you want to call them you won't want to play anything else because it will be boring in comparison.

Even the graphics on Age of Empires(the conquerors) looks dated and old and choppy compared to the graphics in Rise of Nations and i'm playing on Windows 98SE and a VooDoo 5 card in 16 bit mode.

There's a new patch, patch 3 and the changes and fixes are looking good and adding even more to the game, there's even a new game type. Big Huge Games has fixed everything wrong with previous RTS titles and improved rts game play for the future.

All future RTS games should look at Rise of Nations for what to do RIGHT....anything else would be uncivilized....the full game is better than the demo. Don't be fooled.

Feel good when you buy this, knowing your going to own the Game of The Year.

MUST BUY

This is probably the best computer game I've played! The coolest part of the game is probably how you start out with swords, and how you will end with rocket launchers and nuclear missles. You can play either a quick game (an ordenary game) or conquer the world. In couquer the world you pick a nation you want to be then you go to a map of the world (looks almost the same as a risk map does) and then you can go take territories from indians, or go take on another nation (I would'nt take on another nation at the begining of the game). By now you probably want to go by the game now, but before you do you should know that you will probably have buy a video card. I had to do that, but now I know that it payed off to buy the video card instead of not playing the game at all. This is a must buy game, so make sure you go and get it.
