I'm a fan of all these RTS games, and Age of Empires is still the winner. While there are some improved gameplay features, Rise of Nations seems rushed to market, with no scenarios or great history lessons like Age of Empires and Empire Earth. I'm a history buff, and was always impressed with Age of Empires campaigns ability to teach while you were playing it. Is this game just a foundation to sell more follow-on scenario packs? If so, that's slimy.
Other gameplay features missing: no ability to build walls! The advancement from age to age is also far too quick - Empire Earth does a much better job here. I do think the graphics and overall interface is nicer than EE though. Overall, a dissapointment.

Some people don't know what they are talking about. All games are designed for different systems. Just because it doesn't work on your's doesn't mean you can insult and laugh at the Microsoft crew. They work hard to create this game. The problem may be with one of the protection programs or the background ones, or maybe it's just your settings. It could be your outdated components, or maybe you just overexaggerate. What ever the problem, this does not give you a right to put down a good game! I had the same problem with the 'Freelancer' reviewers. OK, every single game has it's down sides and it's up sides. You should at least have played all the functions and the game for at least 2 weeks before judging it.
One reviewer said it was no good, nothing special and 2 stars and 2 weeks later he wrote another review saying how he was wrong and he gave it a full 5 dtars!!!
And obviously some people think that the demo is good enough. Some write a review with no basis and some write it based on demos. If you want an accurate review, PLAY THE GAME!!
Would have gotten 4 stars but...........

Again, microsoft goes on to milk everyone for money. This game is awesome except for the fact many people are unable to make the campain mode work. Microsoft so far has not acknowledged the fact that it is their software, but they continue to claim it is peoples computers. As for the game itself? It is very nicely put together. If you like Civiliazation series and Age of Empires then you will love this game. You put the two together and BOOM you have Rise of Nations. I would recommend buying this AFTER microsoft comes out with a patch to fix the bugs.
Good But with some Problems

First I would like to say I really enjoyed this game. Graphics are good and so is the actual gameplay but there are some annoyances.
I like to be challenged. so I always play on "toughest" mode. But it is increadibly annoying when all the nations gang up on you. They attack you from all your fronts, someone will attack be sea, the other attacks by your west flank, and anoothe attacks by wour east flank. I usualy like fighting it out to the death when I am ganged up on in mist other games, like Age of Empires, but this game lacks the ability to make a solid barrier.
I am really anoyed by the lack of walls, trenches, so on, because you can never really slaim whats yours. You never have that added protection, the enemy can just waltz righ through yoiu city and capture it. I really dont like this because I dont think that Defending a city should be as hard as attacking one. When your defending you should have the advantage because you can slow down the enemy, but thats no true in this game. Also the lack of walls combined with national borders has made the game unrealistic. When I would play Age of Empires I would biuld a staging point for an attack, close to the enemy city, fortify it and build barracks and stables, then I would attack and continuualu reinforce my attack with fresh troops. But you cant do that in this game. That is a Real annoynce to me.
Another thing that is anoying are the "National Borders" and "Atrittion Damage", both of these are really anoying because they make logistics a big concern that I personally dont want to deal with.
All in all this game was enjoyable even though it has it draw backs.
Very good game

I enjoy playing Rise of Nations. I have played many other stratagy games, such as Age of Mythology, and Age of Empires. This game exceeds them all. In Rise of Nations, the battles are kind of like Age of Empires, except that you can not only use units from the early ages, like the midevil age, but also advanced units, like tanks and planes. Overall the only downside to this game is the lack of a real campaign. The only available campaign is a Risk-like format, with many seperate battles, in which you attempt to take over territorys. I think that this game is worth buying.
Civilization fans rejoice!

Having myself played every version of Civilization that has come out, I can say this is an awesome game. Just the demo makes me want to rush out an buy this, and I might have to spring for Express Mail shipping.
If you like detail, it's all there. If you don't, this isn't for you, and you can go back to playing Doom and other shoot em ups.

I just want to mention the support for this fun game. They helped me on the phone for an hour to get the game working. My computer is somewhat old and messed up.
Civilization Meets Real Time Strategy

Let me begin by telling you that I'm not a big fan of real-time strategy (RTS) games. Other than the first month I played Age of Empires, the Blizzard games (Warcraft and Starcraft) are probably the only RTS games I've found enjoyable as it seems that most RTS titles are the same thing with different options. Even Star Wars and Lord of the Rings have their own RTS games these days with jedis and hobbits replacing archers, musketeers, or whatever else the most recent RTS has decided to include in its game. So with all this said, you can imagine that I was hesitant to purchase Rise of Nations. But darnit, I couldn't resist after reading some summaries of the game. I'll give the game credit where credit is due, it's definitely an improvement over other recent RTS rehases and is probably the most complicated RTS to date. You'll need to play this one quite a bit before you get used to the many technology trees your society can choose. Speaking of technology trees, Rise of Nations is really nothing more than a real-time strategy answer for fans of the turn-based strategy game, Civilization. If you're like me and sick of the RTS genre, you probably won't find anything to last you more than a week. On the other hand, if you're an RTS junkie, you need to grab this game quickly because it's one of the best RTS titles out there!
Needs a usable interface

Ack! So many of the RTS games have the same interface. Its horrible. The multiple city aspect of this game only makes it worse. Its nearly impossible to fight a major battle as well as keep your cities producing because you have to go and find each city, click on each building and upgrade/build with it. A simple sidebar that allows you to keep your cities running without leaving the battle would be awesome. As it is its just a frustrating experience. The addition of the researching just makes for one more thing you have to try to keep track of in this jumbled game.
Obviously this game is a meld of Civilization and Age of "Whatever". It fails at both and leaves you in a click fest where you have no time to think and no time to act.
I hope these games move away from the frantic clicking to a more thought out strategy game, but I dont see it happening because people play these game like they're going out of style. I for one hope they are.
Fabulous Blend of Real Time and Turn Based Strategy

I'm a long time veteran of the Civilization series as well as the Age of Empires/Kings/Mythology series and I must say that this game brings the best of both worlds.
In its Conquer the World you have a turn based strategy game when dealing at a global scale, but in the individual battles it transforms into a real time game.
The gameplay is the same as in the AoE series, while the graphics are breathtaking (you can almost feel the blast of a nuclear explosion).
I particularly liked the fact that you can't just nuke the world indiscriminantly without any repercussions. If you use nuclear weapons, a trade embargo is imposed on you. If a total of 10 nuclear weapons are used by ALL sides, Armageddon occurs and EVERYONE loses (much like in real life).
Other features I like:
* The villagers don't idle anymore but will actively look for something to do (build or gather)
* Units can autoexplore the map
* Resources don't get depleted
* No hunting
* You can't assign more than a set number of villagers to any single resource
* Knowledge (a very important resource in the later stages of the game) is gathered by scholars that can move from university to university
* Wonders give a bonus like in Civilization
* Who controls what area of the map is clearly marked
Things I don't like:
* The computer controlled players aren't much of a challenge
* There are no campaigns or scenarios like in the AoE series
* Units don't "speak" like in Age of Kings
