I looked forward to loading and running this game. Reynolds' contributions to Civilization made it a must buy. And Microsoft sort of indicated that it would be produced well.

I never found out.

After three minutes of tutorial the game froze. Had to unplug the computer to restart it.

So I tried playing the game, instead of running the tutorial. Got just about as far and it froze again.

I tried this four times and four time I had to unplug my computer. (I'm running WinXP on a Pentium 4 from IBM.)

So I tried the newsgroups at Microsoft. Lo and behold there are at least a dozen comments on the news groups about system freezes and this game. So I write Customer Service at Microsoft. (Costs $30 to call them, so you email them.) So they run a diagnostic on my system. And they tell me to install a new driver for my video card. I'm a little hesitant to do this, given that IBM routinely sends me notice when new drivers are available. But I download and try it. Guess what setup tells me: "This is not an appropriate driver for your video card."

I'm running an ATI video card. Others I saw with problems were also well known, like nVidia. Microsoft's next suggestion was that I buy a new video card! Nah. I'm afraid I have to return the game.

I am a RTS gamer, and I love this game

I love RTS games. My all time favorite is AOE II, but I have half a dozen others and have played through twice that many. Rise of Nations is a great game. I do have to admit that i have only played the demo. (Waiting for Christmas!!) Here are four of the reasons that I think this game is so great. (They arn't in any specific order)

1. This game, unlike many RTS games, is not so hard that you get fed up and stop playing and not so easy that you get bored. Many RTS games I have come across are too hard or two easy, making them seem like a waste of time. This game isn't like that.

2. I think that the way the research system is set up is very simple. There are 4 catagories of advancment in the game. All of the advancments you can research in the game fall into one of those four catagories. The 4 catagories are: Military, Civics, Commerce, and Science. You advance the four catagories at a builidng called the library. You have to advance the entire catagorie at the library before you can make specific advancments at buildings such as the lumbermill. The catagories of advancment are color coded, making it easy to tell which catagorie an advancment falls under.

3. The units/nations are fun to play with. Each nation (there are 18) has 1-3 units that are only usable by that nation. The unique unit usaualy replaces a unit similair to it, but the unique unit is slightly better than the one it replaces. Each nation also has a list of statistical advantages. (for example: a nation might have the advantage of collecting wood 70% faster)

4. I love how the citizens will give themselfs a job if one is available. If you havn't assigned a job to a citizen after 20 seconds or so they will begin to harvest at a resourse that can take new workers. This lets you give the order to make citizens, and then move on to another area of the map. The military units also are very efficient, and don't have to be told to attack.

If you want to find out more, the official website is very well built. That is were I found the Demo. The address is www.riseofnations.com

I really like the risk like single player campaign. I would love to see that part of the game for multiplayer. This is a great solo game but I am more of a multiplayer kind of gamer. Unfortunately, this game doesn't have a big multiplayer following so finding good games on the net is kind of hard.

Short and Tall, Nuke 'em all! Great game.

This a great empire building game. I love how it tends to end in total nuclear war! Blow it to hell, baby! A lot of funny. It is going for $39.95, wait a year and it will be down to under $20.

I have owned this game since it has been released, and ever since I started playing it, I can't stop! The game has everything you need to get a feeling of realistic war. I personally love the online gaming feature, since I can play with other people.

One of the greatest things about the game is all of the different civilizations. Every one of them has it's own strengths. In order to get to know all of the strenths better, I purchased the Sybex Official Strategy Guide, which is a great help. I suggest that anyone who buys this should also purchase the strategy guide along with it.

Another great thing is the fact that the wonders offer bonuses when you build them. Some allow your cities to expand by 3, and some give you free foot troops, etc. My personal favorite is the Statue of Liberty, which upgrades your military for free.

One of the most challanging features in the game, which is also very fun to use, is the nukes. You have to be careful not to destroy the game, but you still get to use them and destroy other nation's cities, etc. However, if they get them before you do, you had better be able to research the missil shield at the library.

The game is full of strategy, and it's a great game all around. If you love to go to "war" and have a great time, this game is for you! It's easily the best RTS ever made.

Astonishing!

This game is the greatest real-time-strategy game since Command and Conquer Red Alert Two and Age of Empires Two: Age of Kings. The "Conquer the World Campeign" is very fun and strategic. All around an extraordinary game.

It fixes everything from the previous strategy games

This is the best strategy game yet. It mixes RISK, Age of Empires, and Civilization III into a single, fun game.

It allows you to set up your borders, establish new cities, and build your army of destruction. A Personal best buy from me. You can choose from many of the great nations and fight to your liking. You can command the Red Armys of Russia, or the raiding Mongols... and many more.

It has a deep political system and you can do what you wish to conquer the world.

This Game Rocks!
