Up to this point, my favorite rts game has been the age of empires series. This game blows it out of the water. The options seem endless and the gameplay is great. I also like the idea of using technology from the past 6000 years. It is amazing. I have only played the demo, and I can't wait to buy the final game and experience what I feel could be a revolutionary game. BUY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too slow for my PC

I've played this game for about a week now. Its very similar to Empire Earth. One nice feature is that infantry operate more like they do in "cossacks" as they line up for battle. The economy in Rise of Nations is just passable, but not as good as Setlers or Stronghold where individual villagers carry products from industry to industry. However, whereas Empire Earth plays fine on my XP 733Mhz PIII with 16M Nvidia card and 128M RAM, Rise of Nations is a dog. It just grinds to a halt with hard disk accesses, and I mean a halt! "Pause" leaves it in continuous HD access mode. Playing a battle ends in a frustration of hard disk access as you can't even select your soldiers while they get wiped out by the computer enemy. Even exiting the game takes 2 minutes of hard disk access. Maybe the game plays better with 256M ram or more, or maybe Microsoft will release a patch to correct this. There is one XP bug listed in the readme but the workaround doesn't seem to reduce the hard disk accesses for long. If you must buy this game, you probably need a 1 Gig PIII w/256M RAM and 32M Nvidia video card. Better yet, go for 512M PC system RAM. Or you can always stick with Empire Earth...

To sum it up: This is an awsome game. You andvance thru the ages such as Claccical age to industrial age to the information age. Your army can be ranged from hoplites to musketters to the moder day assult infanty. The economy is not to intensive. It reqiuers a fiar amount of attenssion.
You wanna get serious?
Military: In the 1st ages you will fight with pikmen and hevey infantry and also some archers. Very Age of Empires stuff. But once you reach the indutral age it all changes. your infantry become rifelmen , machine gunners, and anti tank men. They also thorw in some cool stuff like special forces and flamthorwers.Your Horses become tanks and armoured vehcals. and you also get some planes. And as you advanse to the information age you men vehcals navy and air units get upgraded.
Economy: Like i siad it is not to intensive. You will start out with collecting food, wood, and wealth(gold). Then you will need to collect knowledge and oil and iron in the later ages. To get knowledes you will need to get a univesity and creat scholors. This game economy is different but not way egzodic. You will also need to biuld cites to expand your broaders and economy. Your cites can get upgrded from a small city to a large city to a major city.when they get upgraded you will have more advatages.
Overall:
gameplay:5
sound: 4.5
Graphics 4
Control:5

I play just about every RTS game that comes out, and this is the best one since the now-dated Age series. Game runs impressivly well on my older system. The background of the designers of Alpha Centuari and Civ II is clearly present.
It gets boring real fast

When you first load this game...WOW, new features and new units. Then after a few plays you realize this is a standard rts click fest with the usual cliches all in a brand new dress. The thrill of the new features fades quickly.
Download the demo and play it for a couple of weeks. If it keeps your attention, then I'm sure you will enjoy the full retail version. If not, avoid this dressed up Age of Empires clone like the plague.
Best RTS game ever made!

I don't even know where to begin with how much this game surpasses all the other RTS games I've played. The only drawback I found in the game is the AI on easier skill levels and how they don't help you when you're in trouble. Other than that, you've got yourself a great game.
Pros:
-Good graphics
-Good gameplay
-Good AI skills on harder difficulties
-Every nation has it's own unique units
-Every nation has it's own advantages
-Alot of good wonders to build (and the goodies they give you)
-Real informative tutorials to get you started stong
-Awesome multiplayer
Cons:
-Poor AI on easier skill levels
-On harder skill levels, some games tend to go over 5 hours... although this may be a good thing.
-It crashes at times for WinXP users
Bottom Line:
This game surpasses most RTS games by leaps and bounds. If you're looking for a good game, this is one for you.

This is a fun game, but I can see how it would get old. The gameplay is just crazy fun, and there really is no other match in terms of the thrill you get when you lead your enormous army into a crazy free-for-all. The system is perfect. However, there's not enough gameplay modes. You can go online, but that's not an option for dial-up. You can do a QUick Battle, the real meat of the game. Loads o' fun. Lastly, there's Conquer the World mode. I thought this was like campaign mode in most RTS games. Really, it's like playing RISK on your computer. In fact, it's exactly like RISK on your computer. Kinda like Solitaire, it's really fun, but only when you're bored. In other words, you can only play a computer in Quick Battle, so there's no sory! That's part of an RTS game. Oh well, the gameplay easily makes up for that, a lot of un. But I'd give it 5 stars and I don't see how it could EVER get old if it had a few more modes, such as CAMPAIGN.
THIS GAME IS SWEET

(...). This is the best combat game ever! If you play Empire Earth, or even Empires dawn of the modern world, put those aside because this game rules. If your seeing if you want to get this game and your looking at reviews you'll see that all of them are 5 stars (...). You should really get this game!
Disappointed

I am an Age of Empires fan and I have all of them. When Empire Earth came into scene and considering that its creator is the same of AOE I bought it inmediatelly and I do not regret it. At that time I read Msoft was creating rise of nations and with the reputation of Msof I couldn't wait to get it...Well I regret have spent 50 on this Rise Of Nations game for the following reasons:
The game specifications say 128 MB of RAM and 16 of video card, but my computer is by far more than that and the game still runs slow.
The graphics are good when you use the zoom feature but that's annoying when you are in combat against other nations.
You will miss AOE when you play this game.
Buy Empire Earth if you want a RTS game to play the modern era. Unfortunally, Microsoft has let us down this time with this game(rise of nations).
Single player mode is lacking

I have been a big fan of the Civ/AoE/Empire Earth series of strategy games and I was really looking forward to Rise of Nations. This game combines some of the best features of both Civ and Age of Empires. I have one major problem with the game, the single player mode. Instead of a traditional single player mode where you can take on X number of computer opponents and have random maps generated, Rise of Nations decided to make the single player mode like Risk. Instead of getting a huge world map, you get a board that looks like Risk. You move your armies from one territory to another to invade. Once you invade, you start a scenario where you have to build up a city, build your defenses, develop resources, etc. Once you finish that scenario and your turn is over, you start over from scratch in another scenario when you invade another territory. You even get cards (like in Risk) when you succesfully invade a territory. Maybe this is their way of combining RTS and turn based strategy games. It doesn't work for me.
I'm sure the multiplayer mode is great, but I don't like playing multiplayer for RTS games. I like the solo games that can take me days to finish. I am very disappointed in this game.
