Risk on steroids

Everything I love about Empire Earth is here, plus some. The graphics are not as great as some of the newer games, and if you play too many characters (people or bots) on the larger maps, it can sometimes slow down the play, but overall this game is fantastic. You can play a single game, or choose to conquer the world. Best of all is playing with friends on the network -- very very cool. But you know what does it for me? One little thing: when you create people and don't assign them to anything, they go where work needs to be done. So if you've built out a mining operation for 6 workers, and only have 3 assigned, any new people you create and don't quickly assign elsewhere just find their way over to the mining site until all empty slots have been filled. I love this. EE doesn't offer this.

One tip - the flashing messages on the screen as your character and others advance can get annoying by blocking your screen a bit every couple minutes. Just turn them off.

Empire Earth Meets Civilization

If you like empire earth, this is going to be very similar, the maps are a little smaller than empire earth and the max population needs to be adjusted, but other than that the game offers some fresh ideas and has a ton of replayability. You also advance through the different ages way to fast.
Some great things about this game are attrition, when an enemy invades you as soon as he crosses your borders he takes damage, example would be the russian winter and its effect on german soliders.
I also like the fact that in multiplayer 2 people can control one nation for shared responsiblities.
to many great things to list. At least check out the demo and then youll be ordering it from amazon.

Better than empire earth...

Many reviewers have made mention of the civ games and certainly there is an element of that you don't find in almost any other RTS that is not a reason to buy this. It's my belief and i could be wrong that this is the first microsoft RTS to span the whole epoch of human history. AOE was limited to certain eras starting obviously with ancient civilizations in AOE 1 but empire earth came out with a game that spans them all and that is the main object of this game.

In this game you could literally start at the stone age and advance all the way to the space age. A skirmish can begin in any era you want so C&C fans like me can only play a modern game. I like that.

This has been called the thinking man's RTS but that doesn't mean other great RTS games are mere not sophisticated enough. Most people simply don't have the hours of time available to understand every nuance of a game. Most of the time you just want to play, gather money-resources, build an army and go. This unit counters or is vulnerable that unit. C&C games are that way. I would have never complained that RTS games are not sophisticated enough.

The good thing about RON is that it takes little time and resource to get an army up and rolling. Right away you can make various plants for creating various units. The units themselves look ok but not a sharp and clean as in generals but good. Buildings are the same way. The maps and terrain look fantastic.

Pros:
You can fight in any age.
Great skirmish maps
Full variety of military units available-ground-air-naval
Huge variety of upgrades and technologies.
You can build a sizable military very quickly.
Civ type feature adds another element not found in other RTS.

Cons:
Games take too long, often hard to finish an opponent. Somtimes as little as 30 units and a few defensive structures can hold off an opponent until reinforcements arrive.

Game takes longer to learn than most RTS.
Poor or nonexistent single player campaign

Overall this is a solid RTS and a great value. My second fav RTS to C&C generals and a game i like more than empire earth 2 or warcraft 3. If you take the time to learn it you will get your investment repaid many times over..

What I find as an anachronism about this game is that you can build pyramids while you are in the Information (or current) Age of mankind. In this game, there are eight ages in time: the Ancient Age, the Classical Age, the Medieval Age, the Gunpowder Age, the Enlightenment Age, the Industrial Age, the Modern Age, and the Information Age. I have played the archetype or demo of this game for many months and it has led me to believe that it is bellicose. You, the person playing the game, are the avant-garde of your nation and cities. Some people think that the tutorial to this game is bombast and has no meaning to them. That would be true if you have played the game or games like it long enough, but there are people who haven't played the game and find the tutorial very informative of the games functions and the purpose of the game. You start out in the Ancient Age and it is bucolic and you have to grow a lot of farms and build lots of timber camps so that you can gain the most possible amount of each before the enemy comes and raids your city. The game gives you a caveat that your city or cities are under attack so that you can get back to them and get them protected before they are destroyed. People have been known to hold collusions against computer players so that there is no way the computer can win. They go online to get cheats and then playing the game and ruining the point of the game. There are many ways to give a coup degrace such as gaining 70% of the whole map, capturing the capital of the enemy, Building enough Wonders of the World to gain enough Wonder Points, or by running the Armageddon Clock to zero, which in turn makes you lose also. The enemy can be craven and run away when his troops get too low to keep up the attack. When all hope seems lost because you don't have enough resources, you can send your scout out and like a deus ex machina, there are runes, which replenish your lowest resource. After you have captured enemy capitals, everything but there military and workers become yours. This allows you to be draconian and so you kill them fast and painlessly or slowly and mercilessly. You can make the enemy forces seem flaccid if you overwhelming forces. Beating the computer is always hedonism to most if not all gamers. Usually peasants are meaningless and are in infinitesimal numbers. The game is pragmatic in that it shows how armies are built and how fast or slow people advance through the ages. The basic juggernaut in the game is the one you or the enemy creates. Be afraid if it's the enemy with the juggernaut of an army. The game is laissez-faire in that it lets you advance and grow as fast as you want. The game is also lissome in that the rules can be bent depending on what rules you choose to use. The game seems to be misogyny in that women are the builders and workers and get the lowest working jobs in the game. The men are also builders and workers but they get to be everything else in the game also. Overall this is a great game and I can't wait to get enough money to buy it.

Bye, Bye Age of Empires Hello Rise of Nations

Start in the ancient age and advance seven ages to the information age.

Collecting resources, building buildings, creating an army. Marching through different maps going to conquer other nations. Starting with swingers going to assult riffle men.

This game is really fun if you like war and building your own army and going and exterminating other nations.

Play online with players around the world and chat with them while your killing them. Play with up to 8 players. Have teams or free for all (everybody killing everybody).

You also have stealth bombers, nukes, jet fighters, and these other futuristic vehicles. You also have wonders. My favorite wonder is the terricotta army (I don't know how to spell it). This wonder creates 1 unit every 40 seconds (I think). You also can build it when your in the third age and its pretty cheap.

You have over 220 different unit types, with over 500 artistically district variations based on gender, race and time period.(said on the insid ecover)

Fight on land, at sea, or in the air with everything from slingers, musketeers, tanks and nuclear missiles as a part of you army.(said on the inside cover)

Draw upon strengths and skills of 18 highly diverse nations and their unique units:

*Aztecs
*Bantu
*British
*Chinese
*Egyptians
*French
*Germans
*Greeks
*Inca
*Japanese
*Koreans
*Maya
*Mongols
*Nubians
*Romans
*Russians
*Spanish
*Turks

So Rise of Nations, a real time strategy game which in my opinion is more of a militaristic game than most. One of the main problems about Rise of Nations is its length. It took me 3 days playing it to beat the game and I have no appeal to replay this one. Ive heard that the multiplayer aspect to the game is great but when I review I like to judge the SP more than MP. To get away from my rant of the length, I have to say that I found RON's interface quite easy to use. The graphics were very well done and pleased my eyes.

To some up my review, while I was playing the game I loved it but when the expeirence ended, my joy ended!

I find RON so similar to Microsoft's Age of Kings series game mechanics. If you enjoy Microsoft's approach to RTS then I would recommend you buying RON.

On the other hand, If your tastes are more inclined to Civilization then don't buy RON or you'll find it boring. I've honestly tried playing this game five times and I just cannot bare it. I eventually go back to civIII because I find it much more intelligent and deeper.

In RTS it's not so much about the latest graphics, it's the playability and the challenge that counts. I find the graphics of RON better than those of Civ but it's just not enough i'm afraid.

Fairly good game, but nothing outstanding

I have just tested the trial version, while waiting for the full version to arrive at my doorstep.

The game was touted to be a cross between Age of Empires and Civ III, both of which I had played, and it would seem that that is truly the case with the trial version.

The graphics, similar to Age of Mythology, is great, cos there's much more to the details as c/f to previous RTS games such as Sierra's Empire Earth or Infogames' Civ III.

Game-wise, there's quite a bit of micro-management involved... in fact, more than what I had experienced with Civ III or even Age of Empires! One thing that I found tedious about the trial version however, is the population limit, which is set at max. 200; this is easily capped if certain wonders and military units are built, and existing (older) units will have to be disbanded to accommodate new, more technologically advanced units once the cap is reached.

A pretty interesting feature is the additional controls for the individual units; the one I like best is the "scramble" option for the airbase units. This is really cool cos when an enemy attacks, you get to see stealth bombers , attack helicopters and fighter jets coming out from the airbase to defend nearby areas immediately!

That aside, the game play is not really different from Civ III...build cities, accumulate wealth, resources and knowledge, and then try to eliminate the enemies, to cover at least 70% of the map's territory to clinch a victory. Since the game play is pretty fast when the difficulty is set at Easy level (it took me about 1-2 hours to complete all the library research), things become a little bit repetitive thereafter. It is here that I agree with another reviewer who mentioned that the game would have been more revolutionary if the game was more complex.

Overall, it's a fairly good game which should guarantee a couple of hours of involved gaming.

Rise of the nations does not suck nor it is a superhit.Starting's ok but then,BORING.It's just one of those stragety games which have gone bum after a few days. The controller is pretty sluggish. The countries are almost the same. There is not even one part in the game where 'oh!It's so exiting' comes to your mind.Warcraft is much better.Beleive me

Be careful with this game -- while a ton of fun, it managed to corrupt 2 of my computers. The Conquer the World section is a ton of fun, but crashes half way through almost every time.
