I'm so impressed with this game. This game has all the exact opposite elements of Warcraft 3 that i hate and despise. no rushes, no low populations, no food limit, no cheesy spell heroes and best of all replayability. Some other games like Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires and even Age of Mythology have an element where every single game is exactly like the previous game before it and all the build orders are exactly the same. Every time i play this (mainly against the AI) it's different.
I have yet to have a game that didn't last over an hour. I've been beat and won so many different ways that it never gets old.
If BigHugeGames continues to make quality games like this one Blizzad and Ensemble are going to have some serious competition on thier hands.
The artwork is brilliant and looks so beautiful and just today i noticed a certain "chinese" unit that sets other units on fire. You can watch your enemy burn to a crisp and then fall to the ground. How cool is that?
The other great things about this game in the full version is having so many options of different styles of games you can play.
From "deathmatch", Rush game, no wonders, to having no combat at all. It's all within your control of the type of game YOU want to play. While Blizzard has all it's fanboys singing it's praises, i think the wiser, more mature gamers will embrace this game and have a blast with it. After all what's more fun than your opponent thinking he's got the game won only to find Nuclear ICBM's launched into his bases and watching his "lead" crumble to pieces or full blown naval sea battles with Aircraft Carriers and Battleships and submarines. Can you even have a naval battle in Warcrat 3? don't think so !! Air,Navy,Ground you can do it all in this game. This might possibly be the most perfect RTS ever created to date. It fixes all the problems with previous RTS titles before it. GET IT NOW!
Best game i've played yet. Watch your butts blizzard and Ensemble looks like Big Huge Games is gonna take over...
The best game I've played in years!

I haven't had this much fun playing an RTS since Age of Kings came out a few years ago. It's a fast paced and addictive game and it takes some time to master, but once you know your way around, it is one seriously fun game. I have to say the graphics are absolutely stunning for this type of game. The 2D/3D hybrid game engine allows details in the graphics that you just won't find in other games of this type. And if you like adrenaline charged battles, Rise of Nations has you waging war with hundreds of units on the screen at one time, not just the 10 or so that you find in other games. I cannot recommend this game highly enough!
The best game ever, if you...

1. Can play it. 2. Have above 15 frames a second at all times. 3. Slightly like Civilization/Risk. 4. Slightly like Age of Empire/Empire Earth 5. Don't hate people who take ideas out of other things and combine them. 6. Have both MP/SP capabilities. 7. Hate losing. 8. Hate winning.
When I first tryed out the game in the trial, I wasn't too thrilled. The battles that happened were amazing at first site, but after a while got a little boring. There was about 5 hours of fun though. Then when I hit the Multi it got awesome. Huge battles where I would line up my troops of Pikemen with 2 other peoples Jav throwers and LongBows and we take on piles of African guys with shields. And the crazy thing was that we kept juking out more and more units. Wild stuff if you ask me, and even better with the incredible battles. Sooner or later when I had the real game I figured out that right off the start you could start attacking the computer in single player right off the bat and the whole game was a brawlfest. I would push my forces into their land, then they would counter my units, push me back, then I would start attacking them from different sides until I won or agreed to have peace with them. One review I saw on here was someone saying that they thought that it was [odd] that everyone would rush to the gunpowder age and never midievil fight. Don't advance to the gunpowder age and the computer won't either. Now you must be thinking, "Oh! That's why I always got to the gunpowder age first!" You can set it up so the computer does get there faster then you, but with the right settings you can just fight midevil ...the whole game. Plain and simple. The game is built the way YOU want it to be. You just have to look for it.
And another review I saw was that it was boring. Uh, if you would please just check the setting and click the button that makes you gather resources faster and you can do what I do, brawl the whole time.
From the reviews I've read, it seems like most of these people just love to say that new breeds in the gaming industry [are bad].
I noticed another person said this game was 2d... It isn't, or at least half of it isn't. I'm not sure if things like the buildings are 3d, but the units definately are, you can zoom in and out on this too.
This game may or may not work for you- but you have better chances if you 1-8 at the beginning of this review.
Things that I would improve on this would be walls that you could put up(The borders are almost enough, almost.) And perhaps more settings(which Big Huge did pretty well on) on stuff like how much units effect buildings and so on.
A good RTS but not great

After reading these reviews I was a little let down. This game is not extaordinarily complex nor does it really break new ground. It is essentially another blizzard game like warcraft or starcraft. Mine a large range of resources and upgrade your structures to create the best army you can.
The coolest part of this game is by upgrading your civilization into a more recent time, all your structures and armies get improved. Wooden farms become industrial metal units. Guys on horses become tanks. There is quite a wide range of possible units to create your army with. You can make nukes, aircraft carriers, knights, barbarians, all kinds of cool stuff.
The worst part of this game is that it went way overboard with the upgrades and resources. You literally spend the first 20 minutes of every game frantically upgrading every one of your structures while trying to mine all different kinds fo resources. Even worse, you need to build multiple cities to maximize the amount of upgrades and mining potential. Youll be upgrading your structures throughout the entire game. Ive had games last and hour and still havent even been able to upgrade everything. I would enjoy this game much more if there was only one resource to mine and one structure to select for upgrades.
Once your city is decently upgraded however, the battles are pretty nice. They lag more than I would like but its great seeing a city nuked, or sending planes over a base, or invading a town with barbarians.
If your a fan of RTS' you should check it out, but its not as fun as Yuris Revenge, Starcraft or Warcraft3.
Do not buy this game...honestly

I cannot believe this game is still on the shelves. I read the great reviews and decided to try it. I have a brand new computer that met all the req. Unfortunately it won't run. According to the tech help guy, it just doesnt work on alot of computers.
"Do you have an onboard video card?"
"yes"
"oh thats' the problem. It won't run on those."
"how many people who buy this gamne have onboard video cards?"
"85%"
"Why are you selling a 50$ game that won't run on most peoples computers? There isn't anything on the box."
"people who can play it really like it."
It was a frustrating call. Buy this game and find out how fun that call can be.
This game rocks and I've spent hours playing it.

This is a great marriage of Civilization style planning and thinking and Age of Empires battle. It really is the best game I've seen in a long time. The game never slows down, it is robust and well engineered.
Buy it now!

I have some mixed opinions of this game despite giving it 4 stars. The game itself is a typical real-time strategy, civilization-type game, but unlike what I understand about most of its predecessors, the succession through the ages is quite rapid. At regular speed, without pausing, you should have your game wrapped up within 2 1/2-3 hours.
The positive: a challenging computer opponent, beautiful graphics and interesting action, a fairly-sized range of areas you must focus on, a broad-spectrum of nations and environments to choose from. You can also choose to start or end on any particular age.
The negative: one age proceeds to the next too rapidly. Playing the game on a slower speed [there are 6 speeds] merely slows down how quickly it takes things to happen, but citizens and soldiers all move at an annoyingly-slow pace when you do this. It doesn't solve the problem, to me, of the ages progressing too rapidly. I would rather see everything taking place at the same rate, but the time to move from one stage to the next be slowed down. That would be perfect. Additionally, it is difficult to control aircraft during attacks once you reach the modern age and the options regarding nuclear warfare [basically always strike first] aren't very fun. There are also some futuristic things (like artificial intelligence) which I don't really enjoy in the game. Consequently I find myself using settings that do not allow the game to progress past the Enlightenment Age [basically Napoleonic], but I still have a great time with that. Nothing quite like rolling up on the enemy's city with a battery of artillery and letting the cannon balls fly. I really enjoy that :-) the game is great one player, and would be great online, but there have been difficulties whenever I have tried to get going there and I am fairly experienced with online play. I haven't even tried to play online in months now, but I still enjoy the game solo quite a bit. This is very unusual for me, and a testimony to the computer's strength, as usually I seek out human opponents because I find computer opponents boring. I know this sounds like a lot of complaining, but the game is very good.

I'm a huge fan of the Civilization series, and my significant opinion is that Civ II was the pinnacle of the series. It didn't have the great interface of III, or some of the great and important technical features of III, but the balance and engagement of II is superior.
I'm not typically an RTS fan, but was looking forward to playing this game based on the other reviews and the Civ history of the creator. The Civ influence is large in this game in terms of play concepts, which are well-executed. However, the mythic engagement of the Civ franchise is totally gone. Cities have no character and you view them purely from a production standpoint. Wonders aren't very exciting as they are cheap and totally odd choices, and they are built with no fanfare. I don't ever feel like I'm building a civilization. I only ever feel like I'm building an army. Which I find to be pretty adolescent, though enjoyable on its own level.
My most significant complaint is that even within this limited context of the game as a war scenario, I go whole ages without using my units in battle (since ages last about 30 min or less), which completely robs me of the joy of using them. In Conquer the World setup, an age last 3-4 turns! WTF! Why bother having ages at all if you're going to skip over them like a stone on water? The tactical use of your units when you do get to use them is well-developed and fun.
However, I have to note that whenever I start playing this game after dinner, the next time I look at the clock is always around 2:30 AM. I'll play this game, but I can't help playing it with a sense of missed opportunities for the great mythos involved in building and defending a civilization.
A Masterpiece- Not Alpha Centuari, but the AC of the RTS

First I'd like to refute what many have stated- I have run this game on low, albeit not bare-bones resolutions with a very small slowdown. That, on a PIII 500 MHz Win 98SE system with a 32 MB Riva TNT 2 card. So this is a great game for those with both new and older systems. And trust me, with the gameplay that is in this game you wont be sorry for shelling out 35 bucks.
The Plethora of nations, units, buildings, resources, all amount to a breathtaking game. I have played AOE, SC, AOK, AOM, WCIII, and many, many more RTS games. Personally my favorite game of all time is Alpha Centauri, and this game blends the best elements of the 4X turn based strategy games with the frentic pace and cinematic feel of an RTS. I could go on an on, but in sum this game is worth your money- it is complex, deep, enjoyable, fast (most games last under an hour), and it runs well on even a 1999 system. Need I really say more?
Try the game out- its worth the price. Kudos to Microsoft for a relatively bug-free, unbotched game that is thouroughly enjoyable. Enjoy, wether you like Ancient History, Medieval History, Napoleonic, WWI, WWII, or today- even the casual gamer will get a lot out of this one. As an experienced strategy gamer, I highly reccomend this title.

I bought this game on a whim - and it proved to be one of my best game buys, EVER.
It melds the Civilization idea with the RTS gameplay and ends up with a solid game, providing hours of fun. If you're even remotely interested in history and strategy games, this game is for you.
To describe it is somehow difficult - think Civilization with a twist. Your cities have a sort of "influence radius" - a border inside which you can build. Expanding these borders is essential, as is careful use of your units (true for all RTS games, after all). One of the nicest touches are the Wonders of the World: just like in Civ, you can build these to gain an edge over your opponents.
Overall, a very good game. Highly recommended.
