I am so terribly upset that Shenmue 2 was not released for the Dreamcast in the USA. It's a horrific shame, because this is one of the very best, elite of elite cream of the crop games that you don't ever get to see. This really is Virtual Fighter the RPG, or originally that was supposedly the concept. Graphics are quite wonderful, the areas are huge and planned out, and combat can be both quick and fun to watch. And you can play Space Harrier. Do any other games today give you that ability?

Though, if you don't have decent reflexes, you might find Ryo getting plastered across the pavement more often or not. But the game does have areas where you can practice that too. It's great to watch Ryo suddenly bust out the karate and start beating the heck out of the bad guys. At least, I'd assume it would be Karate. After all, that's Japanese, and Kung Fu is Chinese...though there are so many different schools to that too. Maybe it's neither. Why can't they make a Bruce Lee game like this?

I don't have much to say on this game; the reviewers that have come before me pretty much covered it all. I just wanted to put my two cents in.

Shenmue is one of the greatest games I have ever played. I blew through it in about a week (for me, that's pretty quick, as I'm a slow gamer), I was so absorbed in it. The plot, although not anything refreshingly new, was solid. All the characters were pretty believable, and it was cool that they all actually TALKED (albeit some of the voice actors weren't that talented). And all the little things did it for me... like the vending machines, the way Ryo takes off his shoes when he goes inside the house, and the fact that you actually get a job... and you have to really do the work! And it's the only game that could BEGIN to rival Final Fantasy VII for "Best Motorcycle Sequence In An RPG".

Very few titles rival this one on my list of all-time faves... Maniac Mansion, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Zelda: Ocarina Of Time... Earthworm Jim, heh. I own a LOT of games, and Shenmue is one I would never, EVER consider selling.

...It also doesn't hurt that I love the 80s. The Buggles' "The Age Of Plastic" is in my car stereo.

Best game ever!

Ok first of all this is one of the best games I have ever played. The graphics are amazing as well as everything else like sound, gameplay, everything in this game is amazing it will keep you on your toes waiting to see what is going to happen next. It is the most realistic game I have ever played the game allows you to go place to place on foot or on bus(only in third disc). You can also buy toys, play arcade games such as HangOn, SpaceHarrier, and more, you can also buy soda and you can also win things in the game such as a stereo and toys. The game took me 21 one hours of gameplay,I beat the game in one day but if you are a extreme gamer like me who when you play a game and doesnt stop until he beats it, you can also beat the game fast, but dont mind that it is an awesome game, great story and amazing graphics.

The most awesome game I have ever played!

For all you Dreamcast owners out there don't give away your Dreamcast. Just yet not till you buy this game and beat it. It is soooo much fun I loved this game! I tradedin my Dreamcast for a Gamecube (A great system might I add.) But, I've yet to play a game like this for Gamecube, PS2 or X-Box I expect I never will. This game will take you a long time to beat if your a great game player it would take you probably at least a month if you played it non-stop (I am mediocre)It took me almost a year Oh but it was great and I got stuck a couple of times but, never to bad if you just keep playing the game something interesting will happen.

this game is sweet

Shenmue is awsome. the only thing i dont like about it is that some of the video's are long. For example in the first viedo it last for almost 10 min. then yo u go into another video witch is about 5 min. But for those who like to learn about what is going on in the game but i dont like to watch videos i just like to kick some japensse crack. but this game has some asome wether graphics like rian, snow and the nights' look so life like. It is kinda esay if you know what to do. You start out every day with 500 yen. More than plenty for those who like to save up, and that is a very good idea. Those who like the old school arcade games your in luck. There is a arcade in the game so you can play those sweet sweet old school games. There is also these store's that have those little toy dispencers and you can get stickers. There are also just plain stores where you can talk to people and look what they have for sale.

This game is comparable to Zelda, Myst, almost amost even Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. These other games may be for other consoles but they are of the same nature in which the player becomes completely involved in the game. Once you start you just can't stop. Other games like Rainbow six, Soldier of Fortune II, Mech Warior Series, Midnight Club II or most other games are not nearly as good as this game. It is not just good. It is ADDICTING. I bought the game one week when i was out of school sick last year and I could not stop playing it even after I got back. It is ridiculously well crafted. You get to have a job drive a forklift, a motorcycle and work on your martial arts all in the same game. It has a fantastic plot and excellent grafics and overal gameplay. You will simply not put down your controller so start doing finger exercise while the game is being shipped to you.

This game is a MUST BUY; it is so cool, I love it!

I will try to make this short because I could just talk all day about this game. It is so complex. It is like you are living the life of this boy in the game. It is such a beautiful and realistic Japanese world. Everything is so real in it. Not only being detailed and beautiful, this game is so much fun and it never gets boring. It's not like some old boring RPG, there are always places to go, things to do, and many people to meet. The fights are awesome too. It is just so cool. This is no dought the BEST game of all time. It even has a whole big bonus disc called Shenmue passport that does all kinds of things. I really can't even put this game into words; you just have to buy it and experience it for yourself, you are going to love it. You can get it here on Amazon.com ... It is really worth your money!

I bought this game because I had not played an RPG for the dreamcast yet. The graphics in this game are the best. The time and weather changes are cool. And it also has a good story. If you like a game with a good story and good graphics then go buy Shenmue.

"Mommy, the hype made me do it!"

Hehe.....

Seriously, how many times have will you people buy into hype and then curse out a magazine or person for it not being to your liking? Hype, whether it be from a person or EGM is instigated, not made. You create the hype when you get interested in what they are trying to make you buy. Get it. Its a little something we like to call; marketing. But that's enough ranting. I have stepped on enough toes...

To review this game, I figured I'd break it down into chunks to make things a bit easier:

Graphics: If there is anything in this game that will catch your eye right away, it is the graphics. The desings, the setting, the characters, and the animation and choreography all point to money well spent. The graphics are just amazing, and rival many PS2 games. If there is one thing that I really enjoyed about the game, was the staying true to many of the Japanese cultural aspects that were presented in the game. No name was changed, for the sake of making it easier for us dim witted americans. Plus, the vending machines have coffee in a can. Which futher proves the point that almost anything can be bought from a vending machine in Japan. From the cans that are bought in the vending machine, to that little kitten that you take care of at the shrine, the emense detail is just one of many factors that make this a very emersive game.

Music/Sound: The game's double edged sword. One the good side, you have the music and sound effects. And on the other side, you have the voice acting. The music is amazing. Probably the best composed music I have heard from any game. It also fits the pace of the game, as most a very smooth and soft rather [bad] hip hop music or over powering repetitive techno. So the melodic soundtrack is very nice change of pace. The sound effects are also well done. From fist hitting bone, to the can hitting the bottom of the vending machine, and even to the authentic Hang On music in the Aracade. So, even the sound effects can be able to display detail. However, the voice acting is a different story. The voice acting seems to have two levels: mediocre and grating. I think that one thing that would help benefit this game is a little bit better scripting. If they had some more dyanmic acting(without being to cheesy), I think it might of helped some. Maybe next time around, things might improve here.

Controls: Some many people complained about the use of d-pad for movement. I think this falls into the same catagory as Resident Evil style controling. You either a) immerse yourself enough into the game that it doesnt bother you anymore or b) cant get into the game because the controls bother you(or something like that). The truth is, I am on my second time thru the game, and the only time the controls really bothered me was the first time I played. And that was all the way back at the Japanese release, so I knew what to expect. Could they be better? Yes. But for now, they will suffice.

Finally, the most important part, Gameplay: Even with all the good factors of a game, it really does not mean anything unless the game is fun to play. But here in lies the problem. Its almost too much fun to play. So many people complain "If I wanted to do this, I'd go outside." Show of hands; how many of you live in Japan, have motor cycle, and know karate? Its this sort of thing that makes this game fun to play and the same reason that most people play video games in the first place, to do things that most of us could only dream of. And Shenmue tries it best to capture that into adventure, fighting, role-playing, cinamatic, simulation. And the one thing that helps over shadow the short comings in the game is the truly awe-inspiring story telling this game has. But since we seem to be negative people, we always dewell on the negative, rather than the positive. There are too many gameplay asspects to list that make this game so enjoyable. And it's not pointless. Its a game that follows a story path that is all up to you. You can ignore it for the entire game and still have fun. So while the story may be a straight path, it doesn't mean you have to follow it. Get the picture...

So in the end, what does the first chapter mean to me? Promise. Promise that this series is only going to get better from here. I say let them have their PS2s and their Final Fantasies. There is nothing like this. And I can't wait to see more. Suzuki, thanks.

Believe it.... This game is THAT good

Wow... never before have I been so involved in the storyline of a game. I know people have been talking about the immersive world and all of that. And while it is amazing, it's the story that will grab you and suck you into this world. If this game was done with Atari 2600 graphics, it would still be a fantastic game. Quite simply, it's one of those games that you dont want to end. If you're reading rewiews for this, you're interested enough to buy it. You WILL not be disappointed. This game shows that SEGA is alive and well and is doing just fine against the lackluster PS2. Yu Suzuki (the game's producer) is a genius, plain and simple.
