Interesting new game features

While it's a little early in the game - I am enjoying the freer use of alignment. I agree with some of the reviews - the map should be scalable - I'm playing at 1600 resolution and it is in my way. It's hard to play without it though.

I don't like the way the may doesn't show doors in building and dungeons. I do think the graphics are very good though. I like the way the trees and buildings fade out of view when you move your Point of view arond. the way it handles the change in height at highcliff is especiially cool.

I've had no problem with performance on my machine - and I don't have a dedicated gaming rig. (I do have 512 Meg of video RAM and 4 Gig RAM though!)

I think the element of crafting really expands the interest level in the game. I've never really focused on this in previous games but NWN2 has really deeped this part of the gameplay and I'm not on the look out to create some cool weapons, armour and rings. ( a few of my favourite things!). Being able to make your own stuff is more rewarding and interesting than simply buying a +5 Holy Avenger after using a 'earn money' trick to get the Gold Pieces you need.

On the down side again - I don't like the way you have to access the character and inventory screens - I want one click access to them. You can access other players inventory pretty easily once you are in there though. The Level up fnction is also buried a bit to low down for my liking!

But all in all - I'm enjoying the game and finding new areas of the rules and gameplay to explore (having played every AD&D game out since Pools of Radience)

Requires a huge system to run

I recently purchased this machine to play on my 5 month old Dell Dimension E510 with 1GB of RAM, dual-core processor, and 256MB video card. Nevertheless, the game is choppy and doesn't run well.

This is probably due to poor programming, and one should realize that these problems were in another game (Temple of Elemental Evil) by the same company.

To run this game correctly, you are going to need a high-end, possible server-class machine with a 768MB video card ($700), dual-processor (add $500), and at least 1.5GB of RAM (add another $200-300). So if you are willing to throw $1400 in upgrades into your machine, or purchase a new machine for $4000-5000 you are good to go.

The game is massive and took hours to install. Downloading the 80MB patch from the Internet took an hour in itself.

So word of warning. The game will not run on 98% of computers out there. Don't waste money thinking you can run it -you can't.

Read the specs before you buy...

My husband and I couldn't wait for this game to be released and Amazon had the greatest prices for it. We snatched up two copies and the guide and couldn't wait for the delivery which is always prompt from this site. Here's the catch..no specs listed on the site for the game..we are unable to play because our comps do not meet the minimum requirement for this game. This game requires window XP..pentium 4 2.4 gig or AMD athlon xp 2000 or higher..512 mb ram ..higher preferred...nvidia 6600 is minimum or ati with pixel shader 2 is minimum.
So beware before you buy..read the box
We were able to play for two minutes..our video cards are nvidia but not the 6600 or better series...you move two frames every 2 minutes without it.
Good Luck

Download the latest patch...then this game is a blast.

I see that most people who gave this game a bad score are whinning about the poor performace. I have a 8800GTX, so the game runs beautifully for me at 1680x1050...i imagine that not everyone has a high-end graphic card though, so i'll just give you an advice: Download the latest 1.03 patch. It fixes many bugs, adds new features, and most important of all, it improves performace greatly.

As for those whinning that there's no Linux and Mac support, you should know that MOST games don't support those OS's. So, it's pretty unfair to give the game a bad score just because it doesn't run on an OS that hardly any game supports. If you want to game, don't buy MAC system... it's as simple as that.

Is this game fun or not?

I hesitated to purchase this game after reading negative reviews about, since I did not have much fun with Neverwinter Nights, which I played through once. I finally bought this game recently and started playing it in July 07. Folks spoke about patching, so I used the auto patch and this took about 15 minutes. With gamers in their reviews speaking about how the game looked and played, I was concerned about my "middle-of-the-road" e-machine ability to play it, but I bought the game at a bargin anyway (I tend not to buy games a full price at stores).

For those that really want to buy the game, but are hesitating because of the gamer reviews, I say go ahead and buy it. I don't care to place my setting on high resolution levels and the game runs fine. The complaints about camera angle control are somewhat correct, but I had similar issues with Dungeon Seige. Camera issues may be the "nature of the beast" in a 3-D environment with 360 rotation. Just relax and get accustomed to the viewing angles. The character interaction is similar to Knights of the Old Republic, which I find more interesting than the old baldur's gate series (which I enjoyed too)or the first Neverwinter Nights. There are similarities between this and the old Neverwinter Nights, but the environments and characters are better rendered, the music and voice are good, and the story interesting. And yes, the visuals don't appear as good as Doom 3 which I've played). So what? Different game! You must have XP, use a mid-range machine, get the DVD version, patch it, and enjoy.

NWN 1.5

Yes, the graphics are prettier than NWN, but the game often oddly jumps like a slide show missing some slides. It's very useful to control your minion's inventories, but changing your party is a big pain, because you have to change around your party multiple times in one go in order to switch around inventory items, because there's no universal inventory. If you really loved NWN, this isn't a bad game to buy, but I'm sure there are better ways to spend your money.

Pale shadow...

This game is a pale shadow of the original. The storyline is weak and basically uninteresting. They added the ability to have multiple party members but the mechanism used to add/remove/communicate with them is very awkward. The User Mod for this in NWN was actually better. The camera is horrible and your vision keeps getting blocked by doors, walls, beams in the ceiling, etc.
They have added a new feature of having/managing your own keep which is mildly interesting. But, the biggest 'improvement' is the amount of cut-scenes that have been added. I guess they think it enhances the story but it actually detracts from the game, in most cases, rather than enhancing it. It is also very difficult to save your game when a cut-scene ends and immediately forces you into a combat situation.
Finally, and most bothersome for me was the fact that character interaction and dialogue is really poor and not really aware of where you are in the story - you basically have the same set of dialogue choices all the way through the game. On top of that you have a character forced into your party who is then killed, no matter what you do. Also, in the end, you have members of your party actually turn against you supposedly based upon how you treat them, but in fact it's seems pretty much based upon alignment. I really disliked that.
As I said, a poor imitation of the original and nowhere near the quality of Baldur's Gate, et. al. Oh, and did I mention how SLOW the area transitions were...

Released Too Soon

I bought three copies of this so I could play with my wife and oldest son. We normally beat RPGs like this together. Unfortunately, Obsidian didn't seem to care much about the standard campaign being played in multi-player, much as Bioware goofed with the multiplayer in NWN1's Hordes of the Underdark.

Apparently, when you set up a module, you choose whether or not the game pauses during a conversation. This is turned on in the included campaign, so if another player goes to talk with an NPC, you can't do anything until they're done talking, which gets very annoying. Sure, I guess it's ok for single-player, but not multi-player.

Also, when a party member goes to a different area, whether it's someplace different on the world map, or just a door to a house, everyone in the party is transported. So if you had pressing business on the other side of the map, forget it. When your companion walked through the door, they just teleported you to their location whether you wanted to go or not.

Thankfully, like I typed earlier, these settings are defined in the modules. This means that player-developed modules don't suffer like the included campaign. Unfortunately the toolset still needs a lot of work, because it's still very buggy.

Visually and technologically, NWN2 is superior to NWN1, as it should be. But the graphics requirements are totally inflated for what the game delivers. Scaling everything down to the lowest settings makes the visual quality about what you could expect in NWN1, but even so, it runs terrible on a system that could run NWN1 beautifully. With the "recommended" hardware, you should be able to set everything on maximum, however. Just be sure to read the System Requirements before buying, because they're not joking. (Also, the system requirements printed on the box differ from those in the manual.)

There's no denying that NWN1 was one of the all-time greatest RPGs. Unfortunately, Obsidian changed some of the essential mechanics in the sequel. We waited until the 1.03 patch came out before playing, to give Obsidian a few weeks to iron out the initial bugs. They've still got a long way to go.

I think the game will be terrific in another couple of months, if they continue to work on it and iron out all the glitches that should've been caught before release. It has an impressive assortment of skills, classes, races, etc. The ruleset is fantastic. If you have the hardware for it, it looks great too. A few more toggleable options would've been nice, and I don't think there are any players of NWN1 who would've approved of the settings that hinder the multi-player experience. I guess that's just what happens when you release it too soon.

Overall I recommend it, but give Obsidian a little more time first to bring it up to the quality we expect from a game that bears the name Neverwinter Nights.

Great Game. Not too much different than the first

The game seems identical to the first Neverwinter Nights, just a different Story line. Not that it is a bad thing, but the graphics seem to be about the same (I expected major improvement). Over all this is a good game to buy, and keeps you entertained for days.

Wait for titanium edition...

CONS:
- Riddled with game-stopping bugs, and technical support never got back to me. No help from the self-help forum either.
- Jumpy frames due to point source lighting in a game where the graphics aren't good enough for you to notice good lighting effects.
- Gameplay camera is not easily maneuverable or controllable.
- Update requires a ridiculous 6 GB of free hard-drive space, which is about as much as the original game install.

PROS:
- Very cool D&D style combat and character builds.
- Entertaining, and sometimes original, storyline.
- Nice repertoire of skills/abilities.

They rushed this to get it out before Christmas '06, and basically, it's still a prototype.
Wait until they get the bugs out!
