Not as bad as the others say

When I got this game as a gift I was worried it wouldn't work in my computer. I had this computer for alomost 3 years, I bearly have the requirements for it (celeron 4 2.7 and 512 mem). I started playing it and I havn't had ANY problems with it. The controls are simalar to the 1st game and the grafics are alot better then before. I also like the bigger selection of characters you can make. I have the DVD version and have only beeen playing it now for 3 days. So far I am having fun playing as a Warlock.

Just not....fun

I will admit, I bought this game with the idea of a bigger and better Neverwinter Nights 1. I loved the original and loved every expansion. But something was lost in the sequel. If you have not played the original, than you may enjoy this game very much. But I feel like the fun and interest of the original was just lost here. For the most part, this game has great graphics, and the interface is easy to get used too. There are more character creation options than the first, and the voice overs are much better. But that is where the improvements ended for me.

Something about the original just immersed me into the game and kept me playing until late at night. With this one, I am having trouble staying interested and feel like I am forcing myself to finish it. The game is so linear and does not allow any real exploration. There are large maps, but they are very limited when you try to move around and explore different areas. Everytime you try to go somewhere you are forced into the next step of the story line. It is really hard to play an evil character because most situations involve the same outcome, regardless of the choices, with no room for trying to play the bad guy. I hate to say it, but Neverwinter Nights 2 has taken a back shelf to my other games, and I don't even know if I will be able to finish it. Very sad, because the original was so fun you could not stop playing.

If you have not tried playing the original Neverwinter Nights, this game may be for you. I think many of us were just spoiled with the first, and had really high hopes for this one.

Now, I have not tried the online or multiplayer yet, so this review is just for the inbox campaign.

Waiting patiently for NWN 2 Gold Edition DVD

I have not bought this yet as I am waiting until May when the Gold edition is likely to be released.

I've waited since I've listened carefully to all of you, you've told me about the camera troubles and the performances issues and how the patches may or may not help. I've read into why the engine acts like it does (want instant improvements: turn down shadows) and what I need to do to get it running like I expect.

I've also waited so I can enjoy not only the fixes but the best of the user content, which seem to be as interesting as the main story.

It's due to you magnificent modding [...] that I'm not going to pirate I will buy retail when it's ready, you have to support the business model even if they took a while to get it right. Otherwise they have no incentive to patch and fix and non-early adopters like me lose out on this great work of gaming art and YOU get a forever buggy half-game.

I've played nearly every PC RPG made, including Progress Quest and the NWN series handles D&D rules pretty well, so I'm confident I'll dig this when it's ready!

Late to the party is a-ok with me if you brought all the favors!

NWN 2 vs NWN 1

I'm not a die hard Black Isle / Baldur's Gate Fan. I'm not even a die hard gamer. I have however played many years of D&D (from 2nd edition to now) and all the original Neverwinter Nights Official Modules an a kit n kabootle of others. The main difference I found in NWN2 are:

Visual: The graphics are amazing.. compared to the blocky NWN1 models that always hurt the eyes, the environment rivals many of the other highly graphical games out there (blows EQ2 away par example).

Game play: However on the flip side this means that it's bloated and slow and I have an over adequate borderline over compensating machine.

The camera and key mapping I found to extremely clumsy without anyway to change binds to Mouse1-2-etal without going into the hex.

Story line: Very linear, a little boring, melodramatic and predictable. NWN1 felt like a more involved, free will oriented game. In 2, with the new video sequences the characters are overdone, predictable and sometimes just downright obnoxious. But not in the makes you role play better way.

Conclusion: So, having loved all of the amazing creativity that went into 1, I'm sad to say that I was let down by the much longed for sequel. While being set in Faerun and offering more playable character races, more beautiful models (still extremely limited if you're used to EQ, EQ2, Fate even Asheron's Call).

Still worth playing if you have a power machine dedicated to gaming and can manage to not lag with all the graphics settings on max. And for god sakes, don't play a bard.

Some bugs they need to work out

There are some bugs to this game which are well known. I have tried contacting their online support and yet have not gotten a responce back. They basically sent this game out without doing some in depth testing. Some bugs do not even allow you to install the game. Yes there are work arounds, but you will need to do all of the hunting on your own to get it to work properly.

If Unsure of Specs, Don't Buy It

I have a custom built PC and have waited for 6 years to play this game. I got it for Christmas, thankfully off this webpage so I saved about 30 bucks, but was unsure of my PC specs- I have better specs than on the box's requirements, certainly, but the game still wouldn't work and the buyer I got it from had the nerve to tell me I couldn't refund it. Keep in mind this thing's built like a tank and my PC couldn't play it- and so I lost a chunk of money on the damn game.

I'm sure it's a good game, but look over your PC's specs and the minimum requirements here and wait until computer parts get a LOT cheaper before you bother upgrading your computer.

Pretty pictures-Slow action-Disappointing ending

Wait to buy this game until it is only $12.95! It isn't worth any more than that. I found the storyline quite fascinating and the graphics very nice, but the ending sucked. As someone else pointed out, it was like they simply ran out of patience and wanted to get the game on the shelves so they inserted a bunch of stills and used narration to tie things up. The narrator was OK but I would at least like to have heard a more mature voice; something with more authority rather than the hurry-up-and-end-the-game voice I heard.

Other than that the interface was awkward. Sometimes I found my character just standing around staring into space when I directed him to attack an opponent, or worse yet, running off into a corner somewhere. Too leading him up a hill, road, or patch was weird because he would sometimes turn around and start going the other way. The battle sequences were a bore and I didn't like that once I clicked to attack, I had to wait until my energy reappeared before I could strike another blow. I would like to have seen him attack every time I click the mouse but I guess Obsidian's engine couldn't handle the action. Most of the big battles took 'way too long and all I could do was sit back and watch the action(?). I also noted that this "state of the art" example of gaming left my monitor in a crappy mode after exiting and I had to either reboot or go out to the command prompt, then come back in to restore it. I wrote to the game developers with several issues but they haven't stooped so low as to honor me with a response. For that reason I consider them rather arrogant and unresponsive, expecting me who paid $49.95 for this peice of garbage to voice all my concerns on forums. This is not customer support, this is abuse and I will not tolerate it. For this and many other reasons as stated above, I will not be spending any more money with these people.

It's ok, something to do while waiting for better MMORPG's

Pros
Graphics are decent if you have a top of the line killer rig.
Story is engaging.
Combat is about as fun as NWN1 but better with character switching.

Cons
Graphics must be turned way down (to worse than NWN1 standards) if you
don't have a top of the line killer rig.
Crashes and hangs sometimes.
Combat is extremly easy or insanly hard, nothing inbetween.

Pick it up if you must pass some time...

It took me 30 minutes to get used to the interface differences, and now if I went back to the original NWN I would probably be frustrated by it. Yes, the camera is more dynamic and that causes problems -- what game doesn't have camera issues? I find that any objects that might obstruct my view disappear conservatively and never cause problems. The only annoyance is the close-up angle I get whenever I 'zone'.

As for performance, this game is a beast. I feel truly sorry for those with slow computers; I'm using an X1900XTX card and I was down to 11FPS at 1600x1200+6xFSAA. Downgrading my resolution and AA a bit and rebooting, it now hits 30 in most areas.
Those issues aside... The game looks amazing. I've no idea where these complaints are coming from; NWN2's graphics are leaps and bounds beyond the original's.
Multiplayer I cannot offer comment on as of yet, but I'm currently enjoying the OC with two parties. I did not purchase the game until a few patches were already out, and have had no crashes, game-breakers or even minor glitches apart from a freak InstallShield issue that had nothing to do with the game.

A bit of a let down, but still a good game.

Quickie out of 5:
Graphics - 3
Gameplay - 3.5
Sound - 4.5
Story - 5
My Tilt - 4.5
Overall - 4.1

Neverwinter Nights 2 (NWN2) is obviously a sequel, but it may be less aparent to everyone that the original game was a huge smash hit, that brought the hype and then delivered on it in spades over and over again.

NWN2 is a good game, it should be so much more and I, for one, am little let down that its not a great game, but it would be almost impossible to follow in the footsteps of the original.

NWN2 like other newer games has requirements that will make you need a computer from the last year or two, any older than that might be pushing it quite a bit. I ran the game on an above recommended system and a well below recommend system, and while the game will scale down quite a bit to be able to run on a lower system (and look very ugly but very playable, running full bore on a high end system doesnt seem to get you quite as much eye candy as it probably should.

Graphics, however should never be the reason to play an RPG of any sort. You play for the character development, story line, sound and then graphics, in that order in my humble opionion, and this game has character development and story line up the wazoo.

Backed by near perfect Advanced DnD 3.5 rules getting xp and leveling up your character is rewarding, fun, complex, and complex. If you enjoy planning out your characters way in advance this kind of thing is right up your alley, if you dont enjoy the complex side of it the game has a recommened button that seems to do a decent job, letting you focus on the gameplay. On a downside you dont get as much freedom to choose for your compainions as you do for your main character, irks me just a little that I cant take my companion mage and multi-class her with something else just because I feel like it.

The story is fantastic with awesome writing and voice work that sucks you right in, I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy the writing and voice work in this game, from advancing the main story line, to sub plots, to interactions between your party memebers, I've found it all good.

Gameplay and Controls are where this game unfortunatly takes a huge hit, we could easily overlook the less than perfect graphics if the game ran bug free and was controlled intuitivly with grace.

Your companion AI is only so smart, and albeit much better than the original game, its still pretty stupid, also very annoyingly gets stuck in dungeons (on corners, turns, doors ect...) Also bugs with companions suddenly becoming 100% unresponsive become very frustrating when you're fighting action packed and you realize your paladin isnt doing anything at all. You can instanly jump into any of the other players and control them, which is good, but then switching to someone else could leave this bugged player "stuck", fixing this requires going to the inn and re-choosing your party, very annoying.

There are some general gameplay and camera glitches where you'll find yourself clicking something many times and wonder why the character isnt responding as they should, only to have them respond exactly when you thought they wouldnt.

Camera controls are horrible... just horrible, you should get used to it and maybe even come to acceptance with it, but still pretty darn bad.

Conclusions,
This is a good RPG, tied down by small annoying bugs, and not the best graphics or controls, But if you enjoy RPGS it's still a great story with great writing great voice work, good length and 50+ hours and a great job at translating ADnD 3.5. Toss in multiplayer and co-op, the modding cappabilities its definatly worth getting, its just too bad it wasn't perfect, lets all pray for patches.
