As a fan of the first NWN, I was really looking forward to this.

The game lacks in quality like I've never seen before.

Disregard the Naysayers

As usual, my computer is behind the times.
But, then again, it was when Baldur's Gate, Shadows of Amn, and the first Neverwinter Nights games came out.
How far behind?
The game recommends a Pentium 4 (or equivallent) running at 3ghz, with 1gb of ram, and a graphics card that supports Pixel Shader 3.
I'm running an AMD 2400 at 1.67ghz, 1gb of ram, and an old GeForce FX5500 graphics card.
I had to shut everything to bare minimum, and fiddle with the INI and Nvidia files, but it works, slower than molasses, but it works.
The game is a blast! I really do love it! Lotsa new races and prestige classes, and several new feats, skills, and spells, too!
Not to crazy 'bout how they reduced the time that a summoned creature sticks around, used to be 24 hours in NWN 1, now it's 18 seconds plus 6 seconds per caster level. For some reason, the Find Traps spell is only a Bard, or Cleric spell. And they've added a bit to much incentive to be a fighter, like an extra feat every other level up!
When I first installed the game, I set all of the graphics to maximum, and it's awesome! (Ran at 1 fps, but it is gorgeous!) I've never seen a game looking that good, not even on game consoles.
The 4 stars overall rating is due to the few bugs, and the overly steep requirements, IMHO, to run it, but updates are already out, and they're working on things people don't like.
If you've got the recommended system, by all means, buy it, it's well worth it.
The closer your system is to mine, or the less you know about setting things up, you may need to hold off.

Potential Not Realized

It is a real shame that they managed to take the stick from NWN and not run with it. The story is okay, the menus are a pain and difficult to work with. They really messed up the multiplayer portion in the campaign mode. Everyone playing freezes as you talk to NPCs. Even at the merchants. If one person zones, everyone has to zone. There are way too many cut-scenes. I found NWN more enjoyable even with its limitations. What can i say. It's an okay RPG, fun enough to pay at a moderate price... could/should have been so much better.

Best thing since Baldur's Gate

This game is the best game of its type to come along in a while and over all a good game. That being said there are some problems with it. I bought a recommended video card listed on the box and up graded my memory to recommended. I wasn't totally impressed with the operation of the game with the RECOMENDED hardware. The graphics were not as fluid as I would have expected and the daytime sky in the game did not work properly. I could not craft items because the craft alchemy work bench did not work (good thing there are cheats on line to make up for it) There have been plenty of large updates made since I bough it though it still have a few bugs, would have been nice if they had finished it before release. The story line was good over all with plenty of side quests though near the end I found some parts would have been almost imposable without getting my own items using cheats. I liked the ability to control more them one character and have a list of them to choose from that leveled up with my character. The characters from the list were picked up during the story unfortunately the only let you create the main character. Characters don't die they return with one hit point at the end of the fight making the game more enjoyable and saving you from reloading from an early point all the time. The menu layout and quick keys were not all that well thought out but once you get use to it, it's not so bad. I wasn't happy when I bought the game because of needing to up grade my system just to play at all. After making the upgrades to my "average" system I can say that it was worth it. I would have needed to upgrade my system sometime next year anyway. Though I can say if you are thinking about buying it might not hurt to wait till near 2008 or later for a better price and let Atari finish working out more bugs.

Game has many, many graphics bugs!

In my opinion, this game and its code never should have gone gold until more testing was performed. I bought the game at a local store, and pretty much sent my money down the drain. Out of the box, the game refuses to run on my system, which more than meets the requirements. It's a graphics glitch of some design -- a black screen and mouse cursor, but no interface appearing. Though, elements of the interface/main menu can be heard and clicked upon, but you never actually see them. That's no way to release a game.

I've tried seeking help on the NWN2 forums, and no one from Obsidian has yet to offer any real insight to me or the others seeing similar problems. Given I can't even return the game to the store (cuz you know, we're all evil little pirates and its assumed we're just returning a game we've already copied and sold to 50+ friends), I'm just flat out $[...], which annoys me to no end, but well, such is life.

So keep this in mind when considering this game -- it has bugs, there's no real form of technical support that I can tell, and for better or for worse, I think it's a sign of the quality of code in this product. If you go for it, and it works for you, great, But so far, it appears many people are having issues.

do not buy

Do not buy this game if you have a computer then is greater than 10 days old. The hardware required to run this game is not for the casual user. make sure you read the system requirements before you purchase this game. I spent one hour loading the game and all the patches and it still wouldn't work. I then spent a day reading atari forums and tech support and still it won't work. Amazon will only give me 50% back and I wasted a ton of time. I just wanted to play a new style RPG and I have nothing to show for it. Good Luck.

Bugs and more bugs!!!!!

I played NW1 and loved it!
NW2 has lots of good stuff, but what high end system do I need? I met the min. requirements, but the frame rate is so slow that I can gave after a few hours of trying to play. I have a nvidia geforce ultra 5950 4 gigs of ram, 3,2 ghz motherboard, and 120 gig harddrive. I play a lot of online games like BF2, BF 2142, EQ2, WOW, etc...so my pc meets the demands. Why the slow or stop and go action?

It's a good game

I would have to say I disagree with most of the low score posters on this board. NWN 2 is a complete overhaul from NWN 1 and every change has been for the positive. The graphics are beautiful this time around (much less blocky and sterile). My computer is not the of the line (1gig ram, gforce 6600, 2GHz Athlon) but I have no problem playing with reasonable settings. Set down your draw distance, water reflectivity or the shadow complexity. Those are major hogs. It's better to just set up the texture quality. Plus a large draw distance is silly for this game.

The interface changes are all greatly appreciated. The old NWN radial menu interface was cumbersome and silly. The button maps and context sensitive menus make the game's menus much more intuitive and enjoyable to traverse.

Character creation is always my favorite part of these games and NWN2 delivers in this respect. The amount options are amazing (fallout-like background traits, subraces, a large variety of prestigee classes). The level you can customize your characters appearance is not at oblivion's level, but it's a great improvement over the previous installment. Each race has plenty of head/hair combinations to make your character feel unique.

The packed in campaign is a joy to play. I never enjoyed any of the past NWN official campaigns. I always felt they were a bit dry and uninteresting. The story and characters in the NWN 2 are colorful and engaging. Each recruitable character feels very unique and you feel that your relationship with them is developing as the storyline advances. I've really got nothing bad to say about the story as well. I haven't gone through the entire campaign yet, but the 10-15 hours of played through so far have been a blast. It remind me of the golden age of the old infinity engine games from interplay/biowares, which isn't unreasonable since from what I understand Obsidian is made up of a few of the old Black Isles developers.

My only complaint and the reason I didn't give it 5/5 is that the tool set is not as easy to use as the old NWN toolset. With the old toolset I could easily sit down and push out a basic module in no time. The tool set seems to have way more options now and is also not as logically layed out as the previous incarnation. Also (at least for me) alot of the menus and wizards take an awful long time to load up, which adds some frustration. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually.

I love this game, and I bought it for the official campaign alone (I haven't had this much fun playing a computer RPG since KOTOR 1&2), but NWNs strength is in it's continued community support through player added content and modules. I know the engine is solid and fun. I hope the tool set isn't too unwieldy for the community. I'd love to see what people can do with it.

...

I thought I'd add a bit more to the end of this post and comment on the camera problems. Yes the camera does need to be adjusted quite often if you have it zoomed in or at an angle. I usually play with the camera zoomed out and overhead, which I've found to be the best configuration requiring the least amount of adjustment. This configuration makes the game reminiscent of the isometric RPGs of old. I zoom in if I want to get a good look at something, but honestly you are better off keeping the camera zoomed out for the majority of the time. Also the '*' key cycles through camera modes which includes a self regulating over the shoulder follow cam. It's not the smartest follow cam, but it will reposition. The camera certainly isn't optimal, but I don't believe it kills the game.

Also, I was surprised that some people complained about the official campaign's story. I found the story to be a breath of fresh air. I also liked KOTOR 2 better than KOTOR 1. Many people wouldn't agree with me on that. I guess it's all subjective.

I really wanted to like this game!

Just to let people know, I played almost every AD&D licensed game since the first gold box Pools of Radiance for the C64. I really wanted to like this game, having played NW1, BG1&2, IWD1&2, etc. I would take any of the others over this. This game has all the mechanics, spells, levels, that NW1 had, so why is it bad? The game is slow, the interaction with other chars is hit or miss, and the camera will drive you insane.

Also, on a side note, the game went out of its way to make the women of standard proportions. That is, the women chars look just like the men, only with small busts. While they may believe it somehow strikes a blow for equality, it really just made it boring. They coupled this with no relationships you can have with NPC's (as in in BG.) The women and men look identical, and the part where you setup your char is also boring. If your pet peeve is females in chain-mail bras, you have found your game, otherwise it is really dull. I never knew how much this took away from a game, but there it is. It feels like the developers wanted to remove all risque elements out of the game and went overboard.

Decent story, great graphics, some annoying things

I have had no problems installing or running this game, though I do have a rather new computer. For those who have had problems, a patch has already been released.

As others have said, the camera is annoying, esp since the controls aren't intuitive. (Hit the right arrow to turn the camera left?) Also, walls and doors do get in the way while inside. (Whenever I enter a room and have to fight, I have to pause the game so I can adjust the camera.)

The game is rather linear when compared to NWN1.

There are A LOT of cut scenes, some of which go on for a rather long time. I do like the NPC interactions though. Your companions here have a lot more personality than the ones in NWN1. (Closer to KOTOR.)

I have not encountered any trouble with the AI. I set the NPC's to do what I want them to do and they do it. The only thing I can't work out is getting the Druid to cast healing spells.

Inventory is harder than NWN1 since items no longer vary in size and do not always look like what they are.
